Wind and rain won’t stop us

Black Park parkrun
Event number 561
22nd February 2020

Despite the recent bad weather, our hardy Black Park parkrunners were not put off and we had another great event. The wind was howling at 6am on Saturday but by 9am it was less windy, dry and good weather for a February run. The park itself had suffered a bit over the past few weeks from the wind and rain with twigs and small branches scattered all over the paths. Thankfully, it didn’t impede our runners and everyone finished safely.

This week 710 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 52 were first timers and 75 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 47 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 30 volunteers, thanks to them as we couldn’t put on the event each week without them:

David PRIDDY • Andy TORRANCE • Paula WALKER • Ian SMALES • Zoe SMITH • Freya SMITH • Carolyn FRYER • Denise NISBET • Karen ALOE • Peter TOUGH • Raymond John HOYLE • Liz MACARTNEY • Denis KERBY • Audrey PARSONS • Richard ELLIOTT • Marianne HUGHES • Shona LOWE • Nigel WRIGHT • Des MERRIGAN • Thomas HAYWOOD • Fred CLEMENT • Martin STEWART • Sam PHILLIPS • Linda HOPE • Jose Ramon POLO LOPEZ • Marie KOUHI • Emma FRYER • Surkhab LIDHAR • Sue DAVIE • Thomas EARLEY

Dennis the Menace

Run # 560 – 15th February 2020

Dennis the Menace!
Well that was the initial concern but thankfully Storm Dennis held off until the afternoon enabling us to enjoy a relatively calm and peaceful parkrun. The temperature was also kind to us so no reason not to thoroughly enjoy our Saturday morning 5k fun!

Event numbers were back to a slightly more manageable 572, still impressively high considering the threat of Dennis. And that’s not young Oliver Dennis who successfully managed a PB at the event.

As ever, a good selection of clubs represented at the event. Particularly of note is the turnout from Dacorum and Tring whose Chris Marriott came in first with an impressive PB. Plus congratulations to their Thomas Mack reaching his 100 milestone!

I’m also sure Linda Nisbet and Gino Ferriggi were hugely appreciative of their band of vocal supporters and colourful banner celebrating their reaching 100 runs.

It seemed as if we had a record number of our canine participants at this event. Their frustration at their owners’ inability to run at their speeds is audibly clear!

Before Ciara visited Black Park

Black Park parkrun Event number 559

All was calm for parkrun on the Saturday 8th, but the next day Ciara was due to visit... we were all pre-warned! Still the weather for Saturday was benign and not too muddy underfoot.
Visiting on Wednesday I thought I would take some pictures:

Some trees have fallen and I guess the park rangers are out cleaning up the park for us all to return on Saturday. We will then enjoy running along the avenue of dreams:

I caught the last 3 minutes of a Harry Potter film this week and lo and behold the cast were all walking along this path! (Order of the Pheonix for the HP fans out there). There have been many films that were shot along this section of our parkrun: Captain America, Avengers Assemble, Death Of Stalin, Snow White and the Huntsman, Bond: Quantum of Solace, Harry Potter and of course Star Wars where it was Endor, with Ewoks beating up the Empire forces. Not to mention many TV shows - Christmas Carol, Prime Suspect ..... the list is huge! I always enjoy spotting Black park on the screen!

Milestones:

10 Club: Eleanor SMITH, Paige ROBINSON
50 Club Sandra GLADWIN, Simon WALL
100 Club: Jenna WOOD, Marianne HUGHES, Toby SHELDON

International Women’s Day #IWD parkrun – Sat 7th March 2020

At Black Park, we are delighted to be one of the parkrun’s participating in the parkrun celebration of International Women’s Day, also supported by This Girl Can – which you may have seen on social media.

Of course everyone is welcome at parkrun – always!

But the figures and research show that women are less likely to take part in parkrun. Despite the fact that females make 54% of registrations, they are less likely than men to take part in parkrun and to continue participating. International Women’s Day #IWD parkrun is a fantastic opportunity to encourage more women and girls to participate.

There are many barriers that hold people back – as #ThisGirlCan has been highlighting.

So we invite you all to come along on 7th March 2020 for a parkrun celebrating female participation. Please do talk to the women and girls that you know about how great parkrun is, support them to overcome any worries that they have and come along, have fun and enjoy the friendly tea/coffee/cake at the end.

Your Parkrun Needs YOU!

Yesterday, the beautiful weather and our fantastic pacers made a great start to our weekend. Despite our political differences, Parkrun will always bring the world together.

This week, 766 people ran, jogged and walked the course, with 65 first timers (you have caught the bug!). 110 recorded new personal bests-congratulations! - and representatives of 40 different clubs took part.

Although our numbers were slightly lower this week, we really have outdone ourselves in expanding Parkrun,at Black Park and across the world. I remember when our Parkrun was a lot smaller; on my first ever run in 2012, there were just 327 runners. In the past 8 years, it has been wonderful to see how the network has grown across the world, and how many changes it can make to someone’s live. It really is a magnificent creation!

This week, we had 65 Hi-Viz Heroes to make this event possible. We would love you to come along and volunteer, as Parkrun is impossible without them (and sometimes you get chocolate!). If you would like to join us, please email blackparkhelpers@parkrun.com.
