#IWDparkrun, pacer day for PB’s a plenty and a special birthday

parkrun #563 – 7th March 2020

Black Park was one of the parkruns across the world celebrating women’s participation as a part of International Women’s Day. Loads of people had turned up wearing purple in recognition of this and the request to ‘bring a woman!’ had gone out – in recognition of the parkrun research that shows more girls and women sign up but then worry about what is involved and struggle to overcome these concerns to get along to their first run. There was a brilliant vibe and as Run Director it was wonderful to see over 330 women all doing 5K their way and loving it (and thanks to the men for their support and kindness – it really does make a difference!)

It was also pacer day and Joe’s flying pacer squad were there covering every minute from 23 minute through to 40 minutes in their stylish blue pacer tabards. Their encouragement and support led to an incredible 99 PBs! Well done to everyone and thank you to the pacers.

It was also a very special day because it was the 80th birthday of regular runner Anne LEIGH, and her son Mike (25 minute pacer) and all of her friends had made sure that the day was marked in style. Do have a look at the lovely video from Logathas VELAYUTHAPILLAI posted on the Black Park parkrun Facebook page to see the celebrations, plus the inspiration that Anne brings to everyone around her.

This week 730 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 71 were first timers. Representatives of 41 different clubs took part, with all of the local clubs represented and also people from Clubs farther afield: Cleethorpes & District AC, Brighton Outdoor Fitness and Manchester YMCA Harriers Club.

The things that people are chatting about

It was a great day and people were buzzing – whether it was Anne’s birthday cake, celebrating PBss, International Women’s Day or congratulating the MITCHELL family with Stephen completing his 250th parkrun with all of his family (including his elder daughter who had left home at 6am to travel by public transport to get here to mark Dad’s special moment).

The thing about parkrun is that it is just as much about the coffee and the chat afterwards (with friends old and new) as it is about the 5K itself. A couple of things that came up in conversation were:

1) Contributing to ‘parkrun Forever’

Parkrun has now registered as a charity in order to support the work of staying weekly, timed and free forever whilst also growing across the world and getting more people in every community involved. If you wanted to directly support this work, you can make a monthly donation via ‘parkrun forever and you even get entered into a free monthly draw for parkrun prizes!

You can read more about it here: https://parkrunforever.com/about/

2) Representing your country at the 5K distance in the Vitality World Cup – for free!

This challenge is an online challenge and TeamUK is captained by Jess Ennis-Hill, so some of our parkrunners are putting in the miles in pursuit of glory!

You can read more about it and register here if you want to: https://runningworldcup.com/?ref=puouhn

Achievements this week:

There was some very impressive running at the front of the field, with two of the top three finishers recording PBs – including first finisher Andrew HUMPHREY (SM25-29) of Burnham Joggers in a speedy 17:40 and Bob FURNELL (SM30-34) in 18:08. Also a big shout-out to Cookham Running Club, as seven of their members all recorded PBs.

Here are the age graded results that deserved a huge cheer (age grading is a scoring vs the best time for that age and gender over 5K):

  • Kevin McDONALD (VM55-59) of Hillingdon AC with 83.5%
  • Pete JEWELL (VM55-59) of Reading Roadrunners with 81.3%
  • Margaret MARDALL (VW70-74) with 78.1%
  • Helen POOL (VW45-49) of Reading Roadrunners with 77.6%

Although the amazing Margaret Moody still holds the course record of 92.5% set back in April 2014.

And finally…

If you would like to tell a little of your personal story, please do email parkrunstories@yahoo.com and we will hopefully catch up with you at Black Park and feature your story.

The female record is held by Pippa WOOLVEN who recorded a time of 16:32 on 5th January 2019 (event number 502).

Pacer day – once we got the other side of the Police cordon!

parkrun #527 – 6th July 2019

The weather was already very hot at 9am and the pacers were all set to help people get personal bests – and lots did! Well done to the 93 who recorded PBs (14% of the field)

This week we had 662 finishers We were delighted to welcome tourists and 53 first timers, with 32 different clubs represented (including Derek Zoolander Centre for Kids Who Can’t Run Good, Cambridge University Hare and Hounds, Spa Striders RC, Hart Road Runners and Lonely Goat RC). Thank you for joining us today!

BIG NEWS! Put the date in your diaries…

In 2 weeks’ time (21st July) we will be celebrating our 10th birthday! So please do bring cakes and wear your party clothes and bring any favourite memories of Black Park parkruns past. It is a fantastic milestone for a fantastic event – and as always, we have to thank Dave Priddy and Fred Ashford who have been organising the event right from the start, and everyone else who makes parkrun a very special part of our lives. Not just the exercise and getting out first thing on the weekend, but the love and support that is there when things in life are not so good. A community that is centred on the event, but is so much more than that too.

It is great to look back at the 62 runners and 6 volunteers at the inaugural Black Park parkrun on 18th July 2009 and see how many of them are keen parkrunners: 12 are now in the 250 club, 12 more in the 100 club, 9 in the 15 volunteer club, 6 in the 50 club and 1 in the 10 club. Check it out here:   https://www.parkrun.org.uk/blackpark/results/weeklyresults/?runSeqNumber=1

And as always, this only happens because of the people who volunteer – many of them week-in, week-out. A massive thank you (and of course you too can volunteer any time – just drop Marianne a message at blackparkhelpers@parkrun.com – the volunteers have a lot of fun too!)

Congratulations:

We congratulate our new members to the parkrun milestone clubs this week:

10 Club – Lucia Maya BONILLA PALMER (complete with a new PB!), Katy HOBSON (aged just 6 years old and a tourist from nearby Maidenhead)

25 Volunteering Club – Marianne HUGHES

50 Club – Dale HARRISON, Nicholas PRIEST

100 Club – Rebecca AMOS, Antonia GARCIA, Paula KELLY (guide-running with one of our VI runners today)

250 Club – Philip Morris JONES (pacing 24 minutes today) – joining 38 other 250 club members parkrunning today. A great achievement!

And also a special mention for Sheila O’NEILL for 300 parkruns, pacing 39 mins today.

The people who had done the most parkruns today were Steve PARSONS – 424th parkrun and pacing 23 minutes and Ali ALLEN – 422nd parkrun and one of the original Black Park parkrunners.

Well done to everyone – and a special thank you to Dawn and all of the Rangers in Black Park, plus Sally and the Thames Valley Police and the ace Volunteer team for their help in making today possible in the context of the police work in the park today. There was a lot of work that went into the 18 hours before the start to make it possible, and it is very much appreciated.

The photos from today will be uploaded by Logathas very soon:

The hot summer’s day that we were surprised to find a snow-covered graveyard on the course

parkrun #522 – 1st June 2019

The weather was already hot at 9am and the weekend is only set to get hotter. So we were all rather surprised to find a church and graveyard had appeared on the course – and even more surprised that it was covered in snow …who know what they are filming at the moment?

This week we had 788 finishers – our 2nd biggest run ever at Black Park. We were delighted to welcome tourists and 69 first timers, with 36 different clubs represented (including the Lonely Goat RC, The Long Distance Walkers Association, Jog Derbyshire, Buzzacott Runners, Wilson’s School and the GOG Triathlon Club). Thank you for joining us today!

A massive 129 recorded new Personal Bests – helped by Joe Nolan’s amazing pacer squad who paced every minute from 20 to 38, and a run-walk group. Thank you to all of the squad for the support and encouragement that you gave to everyone.

Stories from the park

In the parkrun briefing we shared a couple of pieces of great news:

1)      The Run Director now has a dedicated mobile number – so please stop reading and programme it into your mobile phones right now! Then it will be there in case of an emergency where you need to call the Run Director during parkrun. The number is 07884 173731. Remember that we have a defibrillator, a big first aid kit and trained first responders that we will get to you on the course, if you tell us where it is needed.

2)      The wonderful Rangers of Black Park are in the process of marking our course with permanent log markers at the start, finish and km markers. These are all in place and the 4km marker has the disc on it – the others will come soon to replace the chalk markings! So not only does this help our volunteers with the course set-up, it also means that you can come and run the course as a ‘Freedom parkrun’ anytime – and you can even enter the time into your parkrun profile online, if you wish.

3)      As many of you know, more than half of our volunteer positions each week (excluding pacers) are covered by Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants. We really appreciate their hard work. Right now a lot of them have exams, so we would love anyone old enough not to be doing exams to volunteer to help over the next month. Simply email blackparkhelpers@parkrun.com – we would love to have you as a part of the team (and we do have quite a lot of fun behind the scenes).

Congratulations:

We also congratulate our new members to the parkrun milestone clubs:

10 Club - Brett MATTHEW-LEE, Eleanor SHIELD, Scarlett HIRST

25 Volunteering Club - Callum PATERSON

50 Club – Florence MITCHELL, Joshua BARROW

100 Club – Charles HAMPSHIRE, Karen OROURKE, Lynne PATRICK, Mark HEARD, Sarah NEWBERY

250 Club - Stuart Paul WILSON

What a huge week! At the big 250 was Stuart Wilson – and his wife, Sarah, (and the dog!) were there at the finish line with lovely 250 balloons to mark the moment. Congratulations! Not far off the distance of Land’s End to John O’Groats all within Black Park and other similar parkruns!

A huge group from Hillingdon AC came to celebrate Karen O’Rourke’s 100th run, with copious cake for all – many thanks! And it was very special to see our very own Lynne Patrick back from hip injury and tourist travels to dance across the start-line as the 36 minute pacer on the occasion of her 100th run.

It was lovely to see Florence MITCHELL join the rest of the family with her 50 milestone. One of the things that makes parkrun truly special is all of the family participation and support for each other.

A huge well done to all of our milestone finishers and volunteers.

Here are the age graded results that deserved a huge cheer (age grading is a scoring vs the best time for that age and gender over 5K):

  • Annie-Rose QUANTRILL (JW10) with an age grading of 83.1% and a new PB

May the 4th (and pacers) be with you

Black Park parkrun
Event number 518
4th May 2019

This week there was a double reason to get up and out and make your way to Black Park. Not only was it pacer day but it was May 4th, so Happy Star Wars Day to you all.  Many of our participants took the opportunity to come dressed as a Star Wars character so if you ended up running next to Princess Leia, don’t worry!

Filming was still going on in the park and our route did take us past a number of vehicles and filming equipment at various points. Did anyone else see the trees that were painted in a fairly vibrant brown colour? Or was I dreaming?

As it was the first weekend of the month, it was pacer day - thank you to all our pacers. Looking at our results page, it appears over 150 of you registered new personal bests for 5k - congratulations to you all. Please do thank your pacer, it’s always a special day when you lower your time and the pacers love to hear of your successes.

This week 758 people ran, jogged and walked the course of whom 78 were first timers. Representatives of 39 different clubs took part.
