Braunstone parkrun #335 -18/03/2017

There was something of a special atmosphere at Braunstone Park today as two clubs - Birstall and Squirrels held graduation parties for their recent C25K programmes. Numbers were swelled to a new record level of 610 easily beating the previous high by over a hundred. The Birstall posse alone accounted for 105 participants with Squirrels bringing over 40.

For the run briefing, the trusty megaphone chose Saturday of all days, to break down, so run director and co-event director Julie Thompson had to hand the run brief over to the louder co-event director Mark Thompson. Mark had to put on his biggest shouty voice to make himself heard over the excited starters and if turnouts of this magnitude are to be the norm I think he might need a bigger megaphone!

Some innovative thinking was also needed when it came to timekeeping too. The stopwatches only go up to 500 records so between Mark and our most experienced timekeeper Richard Singer, they hatched a cunning plan. One timekeeper stopped recording at 300 and then started again at 500. Thankfully there were JUST enough tokens for everyone to get a time.

All the volunteers worked harder than ever today, but the fact that an incident free run went as smooth as clockwork was testament to all our brilliant volunteers.Thank you to you all.

On the actual running front, Kyran Roberts from Carmarthen & District Harriers, and Daniel Johnson from Gateshead, took the top two spots in 15:18 and 16:25 respectively. Both were first timers at Braunstone, 3rd podium place went to local man Alex Percy of Hermitage in 17:42. In the ladies run 1st place went to Joanna Male from West End Runners in 20:19, 2nd was Charlie Austin in 20:43 from Wigston Phoenix, and 3rd Kathy Rolington also of West End in 21:31. Local regular Simon Mayes of West End Runners was completing his London Marathon fundraising run today, and easily recognisable in a donkey costume which slowed him down a little. Local rival clubs will be saying that eeh aw, eeh aw, he ought to run in that more often!

There were 184 first timers at today's run and over 70 new pbs set. The atmosphere today epitomised everything that is good about parkrun, just an amazing sight and for all those C25K graduates, life will never be the same again.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

We had a parkruntastic choice of a possible 3 parkruns in just over 24 hours this New Year's weekend! There was a quick turnaround of the equipment and fortunately the token sorting was fairly straight forward with only one token lost on the 31st. Please ensure that you return all finish tokens to us, as we need to use them for the following week. If you find any tokens at home, please return them to us!

On Saturday we had 361 runners, and on New Year's day we had 316 runners with 156 hardy souls doing the double with Leicester Victoria. The weather was a bit cold and wet at Leicester Victoria, but with the added wind at Braunstone, it certainly made for a chilly run! We will hopefully try to sort the weather for next week!

Milestone runs were achieved by Mark James, Nicky Whitehead and Tom Worn all doing their 100th parkruns on New Year's day. Well done to you all, and wear your new T shirts with pride!

Massive thanks to the volunteers at both events for their cheerfulness and enthusiasm despite challenging weather conditions, especially at Braunstone! A big thank you to all our runners for your support of our event too.

The hardy volunteers for the New Year's day parkrun were:

Amanda PALMER  •  Andrew PEEL  •  Ben DICKSON  •  Bruce PARRY  •  Christine PARKER  •  Christopher HOUSDEN  •  Cian PALMER-HOLMES  •  David BEALE  •  Deena INGHAM  •  Gwyn WILLIAMS  •  Helen WEBB  •  Jane FRENCH  •  Jim MITCHINSON  •  John TOBIN  •  Julie THOMPSON  •  Katherine CROSS  •  Lee VARNHAM  •  Malcolm CLARKE  •  Mark Andrew THOMPSON  •  Martin BURDER  •  Maz PRUSEK  •  Nicola ANDERSON  •  Paul HUMPHREYS  •  Rachel LOPATA  •  Rebecca PARRY  •  Simon PETTET

We had a lot of tourists this weekend and welcolmed several parkrunners from far and wide. The parkrunner who came the furthest that we know, was Nontuthuko Mashimane who came all the way from South Africa. Welcome to you and I hope you enjoyed the run! Sorry about the weather, but I think it made it 'home from home' for our tourist volunteer Gwyn Williams who came from Penrhyn in North Wales. Thank you Gwyn, you did a sterling job scanning all those soggy barcodes and not a single mis-scan! We hope you both come back and visit again soon.

Whilst we're on the subject of thank yous, Mark and I would just like to say a humungous thank you to the core team at Braunstone for their hard work and dedication not just on the Saturdays but 'behind the scenes' too. There is equipment to sort/ reset/ charge up/ store, volunteer vests to clean and dry , emails to answer, Facebook page to maintain, volunteers to co-ordinate amonst other things.

We also have several regular volunteers at Braunstone who have been brilliant and we really really appreciate their contributions. Richard Singer has been a regular timekeeper, and has just done his 100th volunteering role at Braunstone. He has now started run directing with us too. Rebecca Parry, although now part of the core team at Leicester Victoria, continues to support Braunstone with regular timekeeping roles too. Michelle Brown has been bringing in the last parkrunners safely with tail running 26 times. Kathy Rolington, being a super speedy runner has been combining running with volunteering after her run as a number checker or funnel manager. After a year's break, we are really happy to welcome back Malcolm Clarke and his gorgeous (and huge!) Russian terrier Mr Harvey. They have a unique role of being roving marshals, popping up at different parts of the course and cheering on the runners. Please give them a cheery hello/ thank you and wave when you see them.

And lastly, but by no means least, we would like to say a huge thank you to fantastic photographers Les Brewin, Vickie Hallam, Mark Langdale and Louise Forsdyke who have done several sets of amazing photos for us this year. A lot of hard work is done after the event has finished, before these photos are published. A link to the photos is always posted on our page when they are ready, so please look out for the New Year ones which were taken by Les Brewin, they will be available soon.

We hope you continue to enjoy parkrunning and hope you all have a happy healthy and  awesome 2017

See you all next Saturday!

Braunstone parkrun #321 17/12/2016

We had a volunteer takeover from city centre based club West End Runners at Braunstone parkrun this week with Simon Mayes from the club making his debut as Run Director.

The weather was cold but dry and reasonably still so some fast times were made as runners took advantage of the great conditions. The volunteers made for an encouraging crowd and we even had Leon Charikar playing the bongo drums halfway up the middle hill!

Richard Whitelegg of Leicester Coritanian was the first finisher this week in a time of 17:31, whilst Charlie Austin of Wigston Phoenix was the first female finisher in 19:17.

Overall there were 299 finishers this week, with there being 18 first timers to Braunstone parkrun, of whom 8 were first timers to parkrun completely. Well done and we hope to see you back again soon!

In addition, there were 55 PB's recorded by runners this week, which meant just under 20% of the field recorded new records! Some great achievements by those runners.

Well done to Paul Sharratt of Team Anstey, Michael Lydon, Nicky Jones of Huncote Harriers, and Kevin Pearce who all recorded their 50th runs this week. Well done all on achieving those landmark t-shirts!

Thank you to West End Runners for taking over the volunteering roles for this week. As always, Braunstone parkrun relies solely on volunteers so if you are able to help in any future weeks please contact braunstonehelpers@parkrun.com. It is great fun!

Braunstone parkrun #320 – 10/12/2016

Saturday was what parkrun is all about! After 2 and a bit years of running, our very own Jill Perry was celebrating her 100th parkrun with many of her family and friends present. Jill started running a little later in life than most people, at the tender age of 79, and soon became a regular runner, volunteer and much loved member of the parkrun community here at Braunstone. She sent me this message to pass on to everyone who helped her celebrate her milestone run...

"I'd like to get a message to everybody concerned on the occasion of my 100th run, thanking you all for the support and good wishes and also decorations, flowers and cakes etc, on what was, for me, a memorable day. The friendship shown throughout the whole movement is second to none and I've made so many new friends, however I was overwhelmed by the support shown.  Thanks everybody."

We wish Jill all the very best for her next 100 runs!

Happy parkrunning!

Braunstone parkrun #308 – 17/09/2016

Brighter weather saw the crowds come flocking back to Braunstone as 381 runners old and new looped around the park, 134 up on the previous monsoon-ridden Saturday.

We welcomed 21 brand new runners embarking on their first, and hopefully not last, parkrun. Well done to Alfy McMORRAN, Callum FINNEY, Carl MAWBY, Mark WHITFIELD, Claire SOUTHALL, Anthony NICHOLLS, Luke EVANS, Ralph LOH, Steven BALES, Nagendra PRASAD, Kristers SKUTULIS, Alice ROUND, Raitis SKUTULIS, Laura HODGES, Anthony READ, Everita SKUTULE, Theresa CONNER, Dean GOODE, Shirley JOHNSON, Ian SINCLAIR, Trudy BURGESS and Olivia SOUTHALL. 14 runners completed their second overall parkrun, with nine of the ten returning to Braunstone for the second time recording personal bests. There were 70 runners in total who recorded PBs, over 18% of the field. Our parkrun continued to demonstrate that is really is for everyone as we had runners taking part from the youngest category of Under 10 years old all the way up to the 80-84 age category.

A random stat for the week, we had runners with christian names beginning with 22 different letters of the alphabet. If you have any friends called Quentin, Ulrika, Xavier or Yasmin get them along soon and maybe one day we’ll managed the full alphabet in one run!

Congratulations to Mark PERRY and Eddie HONE who both completed their 50th parkrun on Saturday while Jim MITCHINSON became the latest Braunstone parkrunner to join the 250 club, a mightily impressive achievement! This meant we had 5 members of the 250 club running on Saturday, alongside 46 members of the 100 club, 62 50 clubbers and 8 junior runners from the 10 club.

There were representatives of 32 running clubs taking part, including six different clubs represented by the first six finishers over the line. West End Runners were the most prolific, providing 25 runners, 6.5% of the total field.

The front of the pack, and a noteworthy performance from Anne HOLYLAND ensured that the first male and female finisher were first and second overall, something that last occurred almost a year ago to the day on September 19th 2015.

Male placings:
Nathan LAWSON (SM18-19) of Huncote Harriers, was first over the line in 16:12 - second time in 13 appearances.
James BREWSTER (SM25-29) of Anstey Amblers and Runners, was second (third overall) over the line in 18:01.
Ryan PEGG (SM30-34) of Desford Striders, was third (4th overall) over the line in 18:05 - has been first to finish on 2 previous occasions.

Female placings:
Anne HOLYLAND (VW35-39) of Wreake Runners, was first (second overall) over the line in 17:45 - 5th time in 6 appearances.
Kathy ROLINGTON (VW55-59) of West End Runners, was second (54th overall) over the line in 21:51 - was first to finish once before.
Sarah LEE (SW25-29) of West End Runners, was third (65th overall) over the line in 22:25 - has been first to finish on 12 previous occasions.

Even though we’ve survived the holiday season we are always on the lookout for volunteers, it really is a rewarding way to give something back to parkrun. If anyone would like to volunteer in the upcoming weeks, have a look at the roster here http://www.parkrun.org.uk/braunstone/futureroster/, email us at braunstonehelpers@parkrun.com or message us via the Facebook page. There are a variety of roles that might take your fancy and you will be provided with full training and much appreciation from the core team and runners alike.

Braunstone parkrun #305 – 27/08/2016

Saturday 27th August 2016 was the #IAMTeamGB a post Olympic promotion where ITV switched off all seven of it's channels for an hour to encourage folk to get off of their sofas, and take part in sport.

We arrived at Braunstone parkrun, to a sea of Red, White and Blue: Banners, Balloons ,Stickers, and Union Jack attire, to celebrate Team GB's success.
Watching the Olympics 4 years ago, was what inspired myself and my sons to start running. 4 years on we are still running, competing in races, cross country events, and are regular volunteers at parkrun.

There was a brilliant atmosphere at this weeks parkrun with a massive 437 runners, of which 27 were first timers. 2 of these first timers, I caught up with as they were crossing the finish line, balloons in hand. Jake and Oliver Cohen are only 4 and 8 years old, and finished the 5k course with smiles on their faces. Big well done to you both, and hope to see you again soon.

There were milestone celebrations for Bruce Parry, Gary Cockayne and Julie Hemmett who completed their 50th parkrun in traditional Birstall Running Club style. They ran together, and came up the last hill to the end with Birstall members either side clapping them in. Well done also to Andrew Spare, Chris Newton and George Newton who also completed their 50th parkrun this week.

If anyone is running a milestone parkrun, let the Run Director know on the day, and we can help them celebrate their achievement.

As always a BIG thank you to all of our volunteers, without your help parkrun wouldn't take place. New volunteers are always welcome, and training will be given to you. If you would like to volunteer, please contact us at braunstonehelpers@parkrun.com

Photos from Saturday can be found at Braunstone parkrun flickr group.

Happy running!

Braunstone parkrun #303 – 13/08/2016

A sudden downpour greeted our runners at 8.50am on Saturday, but luckily it all dried up for the 9am start. 363 runners took part in our 303rd event and of these, 34 were first timers to our parkrun, some tourists and some completely new parkrunners. Welcome to you all!

The rain at the start meant that it was quite good PB weather and 52 of you managed to get one! These are our first finishers of the morning:

Male placings:
James DOUGLAS (VM45-49) of Charnwood AC, was first over the line in 16:28 - 10th time in 23 appearances.
Ian SMITH (VM35-39) of Hinckley RC, was second over the line in 17:01 - has been first to finish on 2 previous occasions.
Daniel ALLINSON (SM25-29) of Leicester Coritanian AC, was third over the line in 17:38 - has been first to finish on 7 previous occasions.

Female placings:
Vickie HALLAM (VW40-44) of West End Runners, was first (40th overall) over the line in 21:21 - 15th time in 213 appearances.
Kathy ROLINGTON (VW55-59) (Unattached) was second (43rd overall) over the line in 21:45.
Sarah LEE (SW25-29) of West End Runners, was third (48th overall) over the line in 22:10 - has been first to finish on 12 previous occasions.

One of our first timers was a little larger than most and bright yellow! A 6 foot Pikachu decided to dodge all those pokeballs from PokemonGo mad people and do a lap of our course. Bollards proved a slight challenge though, but luckily Pikachu stayed upright with a little help.

After the parkrun, we ran a CPR and AED training session for parkrunners and had some fantastic instruction from Red Cross volunteers Pete and Fay Williams. Thank you very much to both of you. We will be organising some more training sessions for our parkrunners in the coming weeks so please look out for these. We recently purchased an AED for our event and this is kept at the finish area should anyone need it. Please inform the Run Director, Mark or myself, or one of the volunteers if this is required.

We have had a couple of runners fall over the speed bumps in recent weeks, so please be careful on the downhill section of the course. We have added an extra marshal in that area and some warning signs, so hopefully we can avoid any further injuries. We do have a first aid kit available at the start area, so please see the Run Director if you require any first aid assistance.

Happy parkrunning! See you all next week

Julie

There were a further 29 parkrunners making their Braunstone debut thanks largely a number of visitors from Leicester Victoria due to the Caribbean Carnival taking over their park for the day. We hope you enjoyed your run with us, do come back and cheat on Victoria with us again sometime soon, you burn more calories running 5k at Braunstone than you do on the flatter Victoria Park route!

Remarkably in a field of over 400 we only had three t-shirt worthy landmarks. Well done to junior parkrunner Elliott HODSON who completed his 50th senior parkrun, all of which have been at Braunstone. Also, congratulations to juniors Luka FROSCH and Megan HODSON who completed their 10th parkrun. There are milestones looming though as Daniel Luke ARMSTRONG completed his 99th run and George MOFFAT completed his 49th, all of which have been at Braunstone for both runners. We had two members of the 250 club, 62 members of the 100 club, 72 members of the 50 club and 13 juniors from the 10 club out on the park.

There were a fantastic 57 personal bests recorded this week, 17% of the known runners out on the course running at Braunstone for the second time or more.

Well done to those runners who made it to their post run cakes and breakfast the earliest this week.

Male placings:
Gavin MCDERMOTT (VM45-49) of Hermitage Harriers RC, was first over the line in 16:36 - first appearance.
Michael TROTT (SM30-34) of Hermitage Harriers RC, was second over the line in 16:57.

Vickie HALLAM (VW40-44) of West End Runners, was third (47th overall) over the line in 21:10 - has been first to finish on 14 previous occasions.

As we are in the midst of the holidays now is as good a time as any to dip your toe into volunteering whether you’ve done it before or not. If anyone would like to volunteer in the upcoming weeks, have a look at the roster here http://www.parkrun.org.uk/braunstone/futureroster/, email us at braunstonehelpers@parkrun.com or message us via the Facebook page. The summer season is notoriously hardly to recruit volunteers due to people jetting off to sunnier climes so if you’ve been umming and ahhing about joining the volunteering party, now is certainly the time! If anyone would like to volunteer in the upcoming weeks, have a look at the roster here http://www.parkrun.org.uk/braunstone/futureroster/, email us at braunstonehelpers@parkrun.com or message us via the Facebook page. Braunstone parkrun #300 – 23/07/16

Now we are right in the middle of the holiday season it is absolutely vital to ensure we can keep filling our volunteer roster. Our parkrun simply cannot function without our fantastic volunteers, and like many runs the Braunstone roster often has the same faces doing their bit week in, week out. Whilst we really appreciate our regular volunteers, we are always happy to see new people trying out the wide variety of roles available. All roles are simple and fun to do, and any training required will be given

Let’s celebrate our wonderful volunteers who made Braunstone parkrun 300 happen. They were Michael John BROOKES, Michelle BROWN, Stuart COE, Huw DAVIES, Rosette.n. DIKEBELE, Lesley GRIFFIN, Julie HEMMETT, Steve HIBBEN, Mike HIGGOTT, Stephen HUTTON, Chris KERRY, Ben NEWCOMBE, Joe PARKER, Kathleen Mary PARKER, Ann POPOVICH, Kathy ROLINGTON, Richard SINGER, Julie THOMPSON, Mark Andrew THOMPSON, Mike TINBERGEN and Elisa WHITTLESTONE.

There were 304 runners gallivanting around Braunstone on Saturday morning, rarely would I suggest fewer runners attending could be a good thing but it would have provided tremendous symmetry and had Elliott Line (parkrun stats wizard) purring if four of you would have stayed in bed or volunteered instead. A fantastic 30 of you powered to a personal best, impressive on such a hot and sticky morning. Particularly noteworthy were Kim Martin HATHRELL and Alison Jayne HATHRELL who motored to new personal bests in their 156th and 210th runs respectively.

Congratulations to David BECKERTON who completed his 50th parkrun this week, 37 of which have been with us at Braunstone. We had one member of the 250 club, 49 members of the 100 club, 58 members of the 50 club and 12 junior runners from the 10 club out on the park this week.

To the front runners, well done to those who led us home this week.

Male placings:
Alex PERCY (SM18-19) of Wreake and Soar Valley AC, was first over the line in 16:25 - 9th time in 51 appearances and a personal best.
An unknown runner was second.
Joshua WEST (JM15-17) of Leicester Coritanian AC, was third over the line in 17:11 and a personal best.

Female placings:
Emma ACHURCH (SW18-19) of Leicester Walking Club, was first (9th overall) over the line in 19:10 - third time in 4 appearances.
Charlie AUSTIN (SW25-29) of Wigston Phoenix R C, was second (22nd overall) over the line in 20:49 - has been first to finish on 10 previous occasions.
Kathy ROLINGTON (VW55-59) (Unattached) was third (30th overall) over the line in 21:12.

If anyone would like to volunteer in the upcoming weeks, have a look at the roster here http://www.parkrun.org.uk/braunstone/futureroster/, email us at braunstonehelpers@parkrun.com or message us via the Facebook page. There are a variety of roles that might take your fancy and you will be provided with full training and much appreciate from the core team and runners alike.
