parkrun report 503 – 14th March 2020 by Kevin TOMKINSON

Brueton parkrun
Event number 503
14th March 2020

Report
It’s been a few weekends since the last parkrun day and I hope you are all keeping safe until we meet again running laps round the park.

I was not at Brueton on this parkrun day as I visited Arrow Valley parkrun in Redditch, a 2 lap course like Brueton around a lake. I was in charge of the buggy again for this run and amazed myself with my result. 1. my time was a satisfying same minute as seconds (27:27) and 2. my finishing token was a nice round number (150) – little things please me.

This week there was 56 personal bests recorded.

Here is a list of the parkrunners who have completed over 50 parkruns who achieved a PB this week –

Matthew PRICE– 21:22 – 156 parkruns
Honglian WANG – 27:23 – 73 parkruns

First timers

22 first timers took part this week, for 12 of them this was their 1st parkrun – welcome to the parkrun family

Well done all

Brueton parkrun
Event number 502
7th March 2020

Report
This week Brueton parkrun reached its 502 week, and the sun was shining for the
celebrations of International Women’s day.
I wasn’t there myself, so I joined Sherwood Pines parkrun, but I was keeping an eye on
Brueton so I could write this report.
We wanted to welcome Solihull Radio to Brueton (in the pictures), they came along, took
part then held their Saturday Sports Radio show talking to our very own Andy Lucas about
all things parkrun. I listened whilst watching the squirrels and the geese enjoying the
delights of Sherwood Forest and what a great job Andy did. You too can listen to the show

parkruns everywhere were celebrating International Women’s Day, with many of us having a selfie with a new Selfie Frame, celebrating that women are strong everywhere no matter what their story or experiences are. Women are starting to become the highest percentage of participants in running these days. Back in the 80’s only 4% of the London Marathon were women. This year around 48% of those taking part are women including myself. I wonder if this is due to the great effects parkrun is having on women and running all over the world.

61 people chose to run Brueton for the first time this week, and a whopping 94 runners recorded a PB including Gary POLHILL one of our regular marshalls who took first place and a fantastic PB of 16.53. Well done Gary.

50 volunteers ensured everyone had a safe and fun event this week including John COOPER who comes every week. I tried to count how many weeks he has done, but gave up counting there were too many, but I know it is over 350. Thank you John my favourite hug provider.

A regular parkrunner Kevin TOMKINSON took part in his 400th parkrun yesterday at Stratford Upon Avon. Well done to Kevin and little boy Benjamin who is always with him wherever he chooses to run.

parkrun report – 29th February 2020 by Allan MASON

Brueton parkrun
Event number 501
29th February 2020

Report

After the [Lord] Mayors show[n up], not a bit of it! The 501st Brueton parkrun was just as eventful & definitely more sodden.

We had 501 brave souls who paddled, walked, jogged & ran the course. It really was a wet course with standing water across the path in a couple of places, not something we’ve experienced too often before I’d imagine.

We know the 29th Feb was a unique experience for parkrun, being the 1st time this date has fallen on a Saturday since inception, but for Brueton something else happened, we had 501 parkrunners at the 501st event. This is actually the 3rd time this has happened at Brueton, with event 401 in April 2018 & 401 parkrunners & also event 196 in April 2014, with 196 parkrunners. So in celebration of this here are some random numbers.

5 Random numbers
In 196th place was Ingrid ROCHELLE with a shiny new PB, well done!
In 401th place was Rachel PRITCHARD one of 11 from the JW15-17 age group
We had 187 female parkrunners & in 187th place was Mike GIBBINS
We had 270 male parkrunners & in 270th place was Helena SMITH
We also had 44 who forgot their barcode #DFYB, so in 44th place was Mike MCDONALD

Random PB's
In 86th place was Dave SANDERS in 23:57
In 199th place was Joanna O'SULLIVAN in 27:03
In 293rd place was Imogen JENKINS in 30:05
In 416th place was Philip HOPKINS in 35:34

parkrun report – 22nd February 2020 by Helen PICKERING

Brueton parkrun
Event number 500
22nd February 2020

Report

This was a very special parkrun for all of us at Brueton. It was our 500th event, nearly 10 years after our first. On arrival, it was immediately obvious how many people had been able to wear blue as requested, to match the 500 parkrun shirt. It was a sea of blue!
We had an almost record-breaking 748 people who turned up for the occasion, running, jogging and walking the course.
The pre-event briefing was a bit different as the Mayor had come to watch and our esteemed Event Director Andrew LUCAS treated us to a bit of song, albeit with some reluctance! Brueton stalwart Sandra BOOT had rewritten the lyrics to the classic 500 Miles by The Proclaimers. Andy made a few changes to the lyrics and we simply had to share them in this run report:

unnamed

Great job, both of you.

Brueton parkrun
Event number 499
15th February 2020

Report
Dennis the Menace came, but wasn’t too much of a menace! Well, no to us, anyway. There were lots of other cancellations locally, but thanks to the early pre-run course inspection, we were GO! Thanks always go to the volunteers for making the event possible, but today, they really showed their dedication by turning out, even when a storm is battering us!

402 brave souls (or stupid…) turned out to run, walk or jog around the course, which was in surprisingly good shape, given the amount of rain we have had!

My Saturday morning consisted of trying to re-attach the connecting rods back on to the wheel cranks of steam loco 7820 Dinmore Manor. I volunteer at Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, and we are currently in the throes of finishing our winter maintenance programme, before we re-open in March.

In other news, Andy and I are working on a date for this year’s parkrun quiz night. More details to follow, so watch this space!

Report

So this was the antepenultimate parkrun (yes that is a valid word according to Google) before we reach the magic half century - what a fantastic achievement this is for both parkrun and Solihull. Thank you so much to all the volunteers over the past 10 years who have made it happen. We were reminded to all wear blue for the 500th - the reason I hope is because the 500th club shirt is blue, and not because we all want to look like reluctant Blue noses!

Hopefully your fence panels have recovered from Storm Ciara; I have my fingers crossed that the friendly council will have removed any debris from Brueton before Saturday. The BBC Weather forecast for Saturday 9 a.m. is currently showing 9 degrees. Let’s just hope Storm Dennis doesn’t choose to do his parkrun tourism at Brueton this weekend!

Report

Brueton parkrun Event #497 was the first parkrun to take place after the UK exited the European Union. This subject has divided the nation for almost three years and will doubtless continue to do so for many years to come. Contrast this with the phenomenon that is a parkrun; uniting communities and forging new friendships for just over ten years. With ever growing numbers and new events popping up nationally and globally, it looks set to continue getting more people walking, jogging and running a weekly, free 5K, together. I hope that negotiations during the transition period between the UK and EU have a healthy dose of the spirit of parkrun to ease them along.

Report

‘Putting on a show’

Having missed the last 2 parkruns, I was back to my bad old ways; the reluctant runner had returned, the nerves were jangling & deep down a little part of me was hoping for an ice cancellation. ‘Thankfully’, as I had committed to being volunteer coordinator, there was no opportunity to search through my ‘extensive database of good excuses to not run’, so off we trotted, volunteer list in hand, heart in mouth. As ever, it was lovely to be back at Brueton & once it was all over & I’d joined Steve for his 2nd lap as tail walker, I did wonder why, after 228 parkruns, I still allow myself to get so nervous about participating. Why? WHY?

Event 496 saw 725 people run, jog or walk 2 laps of our beautiful Brueton Park. With the Running Show at the NEC we had such a bumper crop of visitors we had to have 2 new runners’ briefings for our 195 first timers! We were certainly putting on a running show of our own with such an excellent turnout! This is our 2nd highest attendance at Brueton, our record being 749 from event 444 which took place on 19th Jan 2019 & also coincided with the Running Show. So, will we set a new record attendance on 30th January 2021???

A massive thank you to the 46 volunteers who brought us event 496. Special mention must go to Gary Oakley who was visiting the running show from Gloucester & very kindly came to volunteer with us. Thank you for some cracking marshalling & encouragement.

parkrun report – 11th January 2020 by Kevin TOMKINSON

Brueton parkrun
Event number 495
11th January 2020

Report

A run in the park, parkrun, it’s a simple concept: turn up in the park on a Saturday morning, listen to the briefing, run, walk, jog, skip the 5km course and only cross the finish line once. Simple! However there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to put on the event each week so as participants we can just turn up and take part

Such as:

After the previous weeks event the scanners have to charged, then blanked of last weeks data to be used again
High viz vests have to be washed (occasionally) to be used again.
The weeks volunteer roster has to be filled to ensure there is enough people to safely put on the event.
Huge round of applause each week for Brian STEELE who has completed this task each week for a while now (250th position, 28:02 on his 325 parkrun, orange trainers and pub quiz genius)
Any milestones upcoming collated and added to the weeks briefing announcements.
Tokens sorted for the following week and replacing those that don't find their way back home.
Regular liaison with the Council, our landowner

So how can we (as participants) help out each week:

Silence during the run briefing – it only takes a few minutes and allows the run director to announce any important course changes, thank the volunteers, announce any milestones etc
Complete 2 laps of the course keeping to the left side of the path
Only crossing the finish line once
No funnel ducking – this causes more work for our wonderful results team each week
Thank the volunteers as you go around the course
Both of these lists could go on but I'll stop at 5! The main theme however is that parkrun is a run and not a race however you are free to race yourself and your own pb! Buggies, dogs (on short leads) and children are all welcome to join in the fun

If it was your 1st time this week, welcome – see you again next week
