parkrun report – 2nd November 2019 by Helen PICKERING

Brueton parkrun
Event number 485
2nd November 2019

Report

This week 235 people ran, jogged and walked the course. You’ll notice that’s a lot
lower than usual, hardly surprising given the miserable weather and the small matter
of England playing in the Rugby World Cup final. (The less said about the result, the
better, so I’ll move on now…)

I was not one of those present, as I was searching the streets of Manhattan at 5am for
an Irish bar which was showing the match. I was in New York to run my first ever
marathon on Sunday. I’ve been training for months and was aiming for a time of 4:30
but was struggling to maintain the pace required on my long runs. Even a somewhat
slower time went out the window when I sprained my ankle two months to the day
before the race. I was immediately worried that I wouldn’t be able to make the
marathon but following advice from my physio I was able to go. Given that I hadn’t
run further than 4.5 miles since August I was amazed to be able to get round the
course without stopping or walking, albeit a lot slower than I would have liked. A
great race with incredible crowd support! I hope to be back at parkrun in the next
couple of weeks.

Speaking of parkrun, Saturday saw 10 were first timers and 19 participants recorded
new Personal Bests.

5 Random numbers

Representatives of 20 different clubs took part and in 20th place was Andrew KARR.
Andrew has run 61 parkruns and finishing in 61st was Katie STEAD. There were 19
new Personal Bests and in 19th was Graham WYNNE. Graham has run 223 parkruns
and in 223rd place was an UNKNOWN runner. Don’t forget your barcode folks! There
were 45 fantastic volunteers standing out in the rain (not me, I was asleep in New
York – the advantage of being the run report writer!) and in 45th was Garfield
KENNEDY
.

parkrun report – 5th October 2019 by Amanda CREES

Brueton parkrun
Event number 481
5th October 2019

Report
parkrun was founded by Paul SINTON-HEWITT on 2 October 2004 at Bushy Park in London, England. 13 runners took part in what was originally called the Bushy Park Time Trial. Since then more than 4,029,568 individual runners have registered and more than 515,283 total individuals have volunteered at parkrun events in 21 different countries around the world.

On Saturday 5th October 2019 572 people took part at Brueton Parkrun event number 481. Of those 50 were first timers and 90 recorded PBs. Conditions were perfect for running, jogging or walking around the park; dry, not too hot, not too cool and barely a breeze blowing. The trees still in leaf but beginning to hint at their autumn colours.

This was my 93rd parkrun, my 79th at Brueton and as ever I was overwhelmed with the great sense of community parkrun engenders. I have been a tourist at 12 different events around this country and one in Germany. Wherever I have visited has had its unique hallmark but the golden thread running through every event has been the diversity of age and inclusivity of abilities; the great spirit of parkrun.

Before I left the house to run, I was listening to a piece on the radio celebrating 15 years of parkrun. Listeners were phoning and texting in with their stories of lives changed by parkrun; weight lost, fitness found, type 2 diabetes reversed, mental health improved, loneliness overcome, partners met and married to name just a few. Really inspirational stuff! Paul SINTON-HEWITT and his 12 fellow runners from 15 years ago have transformed the lives of so many people for the better.

In my opinion, it is true to say that the best things in life are free! May parkrun keep growing and encouraging even wider participation for many years to come. Many happy returns!

Amanda

parkrun report – 28th September 2019 by Katie PRICE

Brueton parkrun
Event number 480
28th September 2019

Report
This week Brueton achieved its run 480 meaning we are getting closer to the 500 mark. An achievement we will have to celebrate in parkrun style in 20 weeks time.
I wasn’t there this week but I know you were all in the very capable hands of Caroline Edwards, our very own entertaining Run Director that gets you all in the running spirit on a cold Saturday morning.
I was taking on my 6th half marathon of the year. An achievement that 4 years ago when I tried my first parkrun I would not have thought possible. That first week I was late, I had just returned from America so was feeling very unfit, and I ended up walking every few minutes. But it only got better, that morning was just the start of a new journey in my life.
In the last four years I have volunteered over 30 times in roles including Run Director, volunteer coordinator and tail walker. I have run over 120 times at 16 different parkruns- some weeks with a feeling of success and other weeks where I wished I hadn’t got out of bed because every muscle has hurt, but I’ve always gone home with a sense of some achievement, no matter how big or small.
In that time, I have joined our local running club, become the wellbeing officer, a run leader, mental health champion and now this weekend a running coach. I have taken on my biggest ever achievement of running a full marathon in the last year, but the best thing parkrun has given me is a ‘new me’ and many new friends.
parkrun has helped me with managing my anxieties, although some days I still get a sense of anxiety even on the walk from the car, but I always go home feeling better.
All these achievements which started with an August post holiday run with just a goal to try and get fit.
The community in parkrun has shown to me and many friends that it is a supportive community where everyone is encouraged and made to feel welcome no matter what your personal goal or situation is.
Today 44 volunteers gave something back to the 558 runners to ensure the morning ran smoothly with everyone achieving their own personal achievements
21 people tried Brueton for their very first parkrun. To those people, it only takes one time like I did four years ago to take on new challenges and life changes. Welcome to the world of parkrun.
We had 24 visitors who wanted to expand on their ‘parkrun tourism’ challenges including Matt Lambe from Sandwell Valley parkrun that completed his 35 th different event; Glenn and Cat Smith came from Conkers parkrun for their 31 st different event and John Hennesey from Worcester made us his 12 th different event. Parkrun tourism has become a bit of an obsession for myself. I’m working on the A-Z of parkruns and I have dragged my husband to
16 different ones so far.
We had visitors from Newcastle upon Tyne; Tamworth; Poole; Leicester and Southampton, this week, welcome to you all. I hope you enjoyed your visit.
This week also saw an amazing 66 different runners get themselves a PB, I’m guessing they all had their own personal challenge and achievement this week, so well done to them.
We also had Peter Collins achieving an amazing 398 parkruns, wow that is some commitment. Maybe we should ask him to write a report with his tales and experiences.

parkrun report – 21st September 2019 by Kevin TOMKINSON

Brueton parkrun
Event number 479
21st September 2019

Report

As I was running around the park this week - going through the gates at the top of the park, just after the cobbles and heading down the hill, it got me thinking about my favourite parts of parkrun courses I have run. This part of Brueton is one of those and in no particular order, here is a few more: the “cliff” section at Gorleston Cliffs, the bridge section at Dolgellau, the out and back along the sea wall at Burnham and Highbridge, 2 laps of the running track at Dudley, along the canal at Loughborough and the downhill at Ashton Court. These are just a few – does anyone else have any favourite sections of the parkrun courses?

It goes to show however that all parkruns are different but brilliant in the same way as in they are free, weekly, timed 5k runs

On Saturday Brueton welcomed 579 parkrunners to the park. For 18 of them, it was their 1st parkrun experience – we hope you enjoyed your morning

Among the field there was:

Unknowns – 45 (don’t forget your barcode next week)
1-10 parkruns – 152
11 - 49 parkruns – 165
50 – 99 parkruns – 80
100 – 249 parkruns – 117
250 + parkruns – 20

It was brilliant so see so many blue shirts in the field marking the GP practices event at both Brueton and Babbs Mill. Look out for more special theme days coming soon.

This week there was 96 personal bests recorded.

Here is a list of the parkrunners with over 50 runs who achieved a PB this week –

Matt FALLEN - 28:17 - 51 parkruns

Martin MCCLELLAND - 26:02 - 54 parkruns

Finley WILLIAMS - 21:56 - 71 parkruns

Sarah SHEPHERD - 34:42 - 76 parkruns

Tom KIRBY - 21:40 - 80 parkruns

David HAYES - 28:53 - 83 parkruns

Shengru SHI - 22:15 - 83 parkruns

Brian MILLS - 22:13 - 85 parkruns

Polly DUDLEY-CLAYDEN - 23:10 - 86 parkruns

Lucy TONGUE - 30:25 - 101 parkruns

Stephen RAY - 21:05 - 127 parkruns

Ashok CHOWDHURY - 29:38 - 137 parkruns

Report
PBs aplenty……

The sun shone brightly on event 478 as 599 people took to the paths of Brueton Park.

There was certainly something in the air at today’s parkrun as there were a spectacular 129 shiny new PBs! Amazingly, 7 of the first 10 finishers achieved a PB whilst 5 of the PBs went to runners who had completed more than 200 parkruns. Two of the first 10 finishers have also done over 200 parkruns: in 5th place was Gareth Wainwright with a PB of 16.39 for his 248th parkrun & in 8th place Dylan Murphy with a PB of 17.05 for his 295th parkrun.

Are you keeping up???? This would have been SO much easier with a Venn Diagram!!!

Special mention has to go to Kevin Tomkinson who PB'd on his 373rd parkrun in a time of
23.16. Very impressive. Really well done.

For me, the biggest PB surprise of all was that I was one of them &; in one of the ‘special’ PB groups! Obviously, I was not a top 10 finisher…that will never EVER happen, even if all the fast runners stayed in bed, but, somehow, I managed an 18 sec PB on my 212th parkrun thereby proving that miracles do happen & once again showing that, for me, this running lark is a complete enigma. I never know how it’s going to go until it’s gone!

My unexpected PB aside, it was a day of celebration for the Boot family as my lovely husband, Steve, was completing his 100th parkrun as tail walker. Well done, my darling, I’m immensely proud of you. In the same way that I eventually plucked up the courage to try parkrun after coming each week to support our son, Louie, Steve also took up parkrun after supporting me & Lou in our weekly scamper round the park. And here he is 100 parkruns later. He said he’s going to ‘retire’ from parkrun now, but we all know that he’s not going to get away with that ‘cos Saturday isn’t Saturday without parkrun.

parkrun report – 31st August 2019 by Dan HAYES

Brueton parkrun
Event number 476
31st August 2019

Report

This week has been an eventful week for me. Unfortunately I ended up with a DNR (did not run) due to sickness at the last minute; luckily I recovered by the end of the day. Secondly I joined my Sixth Form for a further 2 years of studying following 81 days of rest since my GCSEs.

Enough about me. It appears that the majority of walkers, joggers and runners have returned from their summer breaks as the numbers were back in the high 500’s.

This was Run 476 - for the curious bods, Year 476 (CDLXXVI) was a leap year.

5 Random numbers

Today was run #476. Finishing in this position was 1st timer, Caroline MCGONIGLE with a good 1st time of 35:15.
In 35th position today was Brian HUNTON with a time of 20:54.
In 20th place was Ciaran MCCUSKER who completed his 43rd parkrun.
There were 66 first timers. In 66th position was Will COLLINS with a time of 22:41
And finally Keenan HOPEWELL archived a PB on his 84th Run with a time of 16:24.

Midweek parkrun report – Nick Hanson and a charity cycle ride 7th September 2019

Hello – a little bit of a different article this week!

I’m Nick Hanson – you may know me as one of the RDs during the weeks I’m not running at Brueton! 11th June 2011 was my first Brueton parkrun and haven't looked back since. I've completed 275 parkruns, 233 of which have been at Brueton. I've also volunteered on 40 occasions and have joined the core volunteer team.

I’m hoping for a little help from the Brueton parkrun community… On Saturday 7 September 2019 I am undertaking a 12 hour cycle challenge ‘From dawn till dusk’ at the Tudor Grange Park Cycle Circuit, Solihull in aid of Solihull Mind, in which I’ll be cycling as many laps of the track as I can in 12 hours! The challenge marks 30 years since I completed the Land’s End to John O’Groats bike ride in 8 days and the cause is fitting as I’ll be cycling in memory of a member of the team who tragically took his own life last year.

I would very much appreciate your support on the day so please consider coming along with your bike at any time between 7am and 7pm to cycle a few laps with me – the more the merrier! The circuit is a few minutes’ walk from Solihull Town Centre and there is ample parking nearby. We’ll provide a post ride piece of cake or bun for those who come along!

If you did wish to make a donation, Solihull Mind have created a Just Giving page for my challenge…the link can be found at  http://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/solihull-mind

Please don’t forget to add the gift aid where appropriate! Solihull Mind is a local voluntary sector organisation providing a wide range of services including advice, information and support to people with mental health problems. Any monies raised would be fed into mental health support services specifically in the Solihull area.

Many thanks in anticipation of your support and hopefully you’ll consider joining me on the day!!

Nick
