AV8.5 parkruns – Year 5

Some local parkrunners(primarily from Arrow Valley hence the title) are taking on what now seems to be an annual challenge of completing 8.5 different parkruns in one day, for charity.

Anyone wishing to join them for all/some or even to make a donation are encouraged to follow the instructions on the advert.

They are due at Brueton at 3pm and anyone wishing to join them for a 5k run at that time, should head to Brueton car park, rather than our usual starting point. Please remember that only the 9am run counts as an official parkrun but they would love to see as many of you as possible(running or not).

Festive planning at Brueton parkrun

Could Brueton host events on Christmas Day and New Years Day?

The answer is yes, but we will need your commitment in advance.

For those that don't know, we have permission, if we wish, to host additional parkrun events on Christmas Day and also New Years Day(which also permits you to do 2 at different venues if you wish-and you feel it's appropriate for you) but we can't do it alone and it's the 2 days of the year where we do not ask our Core team to volunteer unless they wish to.

So, we are currently looking into the feasibility of hosting Christmas and New Years Day parkruns. parkrun HQ advises that there is no obligation to host them and volunteering requirements are the same for these two ‘special’ days as they are for any other parkrun day.

Therefore, as in previous years, we are asking for the following parkrun volunteer days to be filled by the parkrun festive deadline day of 12th December 2018. Primarily to ensure very little last minute rushing around finding cover, but also for the Brueton parkrun organisers to also enjoy some downtime as well on the run up to and during the festive period.

So, please let us know of any availability you may have for the following dates;

15th, 22nd, 25th and 29th December 2018 plus 1st and 5th January 2019

On average, we are likely to need half a dozen extra volunteers for the usual Saturday events and to host additional events we will be looking in the region of around 20 during the run volunteers.

So contact us at bruetonoffice@parkrun.com if you think you can help.

Volunteer Run Leaders/Activators request from Solihull Council

Lead a jogging/running group in your area – book your place on our course!

RUN BIRMINGHAM, in partnership with Solihull Council’s Solihull Active Team, are on the lookout for Volunteer Run Leaders/Activators.

We particularly need leaders for the following areas Smiths Wood, Kingshurst and Fordbridge, & Chelmsley Wood but wouldn’t turn away any volunteers wishing to lead some activity anywhere in Solihull.

If you are passionate about getting people more active through walking/jogging/running, and you don’t need to be able to run a half marathon, please do get in touch!

We are running a Leadership in Running Fitness course on SUN 21 OCT 9-5pm North Solihull Sports Centre. Access this FREE training and support to help start a group, all we ask in return is you deliver/lead/support free and inclusive sessions supporting beginner runners/joggers in the area for a minimum period of 12 weeks.

Join our growing movement to get our city and surrounding areas active.

Mail sadiewalker@solihull.gov.uk for more info or to apply. Spaces are limited so get a jog on! Deadline for bookings is Wednesday 10th October so get your code and book on for FREE now!

We are keen to develop social jogging for beginners in the area that are led by residents and possibly club/running group members, giving clear exit pathways for those who wish to move on i.e. clubs/groups. This model forms part of a wider project on engaging the ‘unusual suspects’ into physical activity by providing the in-between platform.

I’d be more than happy to come and speak to your club/group if needed on this and the wider physical activity project we are working on or if you can help in a different way with a different idea. I look forward to hearing from you.

Event cancellation

Hi Brueton parkrunners/tourists,

Just an update for you.

Following discussions with both Solihull Council and parkrun HQ, the decision has been taken to cancel tomorrow's event due to travellers in the park.

Although there was scope to find an alternative route as a one off, due to their numbers and location, at this late stage(and with no guarantee that there will not be additional travellers) the decision was taken to cancel early and allow people the opportunity to take part at another event if they wish and make earlier plans, rather than cancel at 8am tomorrow.

We fully expect to resume normal service next week and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Have a great weekend.

Introducing you to some of your Brueton parkrunners (9)

Introducing you to some of your Brueton parkrunners

Here is a new feature to help you get to know some other parkrunners at Brueton. In the next instalment we ask Deanna PIGGOTT (A2896902)

WHO are you? (Name, age/age category if preferred)

Hello, I’m Deanna Piggott. I’m 20 years old, so just fall into the SW20-24 category.

WHEN did you take up running/parkrunning?

I started running in August 2016, like many of us, I wanted to become fitter and boost my weight loss. I’m lucky enough to have the moors on the doorstep of my hometown so could often be found running up there as it made running more enjoyable.

I had heard of parkrun but I didn’t see myself as a runner and could never find the confidence to pop along. It wasn’t until I met my partner, Jamie Harper, that I was convinced to join on 5th November 2016 and I’ve never looked back. He continues to be my biggest inspiration.

WHERE have you done parkrun that's not Brueton?

I’ve done four of my runs at Huddersfield parkrun. It’s my hometown so naturally I always look forward to running that course (even with its many hills!) and seeing a few familiar faces. I also took part in the New Year’s Day run at Kingsbury and look forward to running the course again.

WHICH parkrun would you like to do that you haven't yet?

I’d love to run a parkrun a little further afield. I love travelling and the Gold Coast is somewhere I could only dream of running. Australia’s Main Beach parkrun would be perfect for me.

WHAT would you to say to anyone thinking of taking part in a parkrun, that hasn't yet?

Just do it! As daunting as it can seem. The parkrun community is so welcoming, as cliché as it sounds, it really is one big family.  One of the best things about parkrun is its energy and positivity, you’ll leave feeling fantastic. It’s even given me to confidence to run the Great North Run in September, something I’d always dreamed of.

No matter whether you walk, run or volunteer, parkrun is such a great community to be a part of and I’m really proud to be involved. I’d recommend it to anyone.

WHAT's your forthcoming plans in and outside of parkrun?

In terms of parkrun, my main aim is to keep working towards that sub 35 PB (I’ll get there one day!) and to do a little bit more parkrun tourism.

Outside of parkrun, I’m keeping busy away from studying. I have a few busy months lined up- a trip to Paris and starting to prepare for the Great North Run.
