parkrun report – 15th February 2020 by Tom Willson

Brueton parkrun
Event number 499
15th February 2020

Report
Dennis the Menace came, but wasn’t too much of a menace! Well, no to us, anyway. There were lots of other cancellations locally, but thanks to the early pre-run course inspection, we were GO! Thanks always go to the volunteers for making the event possible, but today, they really showed their dedication by turning out, even when a storm is battering us!

402 brave souls (or stupid…) turned out to run, walk or jog around the course, which was in surprisingly good shape, given the amount of rain we have had!

My Saturday morning consisted of trying to re-attach the connecting rods back on to the wheel cranks of steam loco 7820 Dinmore Manor. I volunteer at Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, and we are currently in the throes of finishing our winter maintenance programme, before we re-open in March.

In other news, Andy and I are working on a date for this year’s parkrun quiz night. More details to follow, so watch this space!

parkrun report – 4th January 2020 by Katie PRICE

Brueton parkrun
Event number 494
4th January 2020

Report

This week Brueton parkrun reached its 494th week, only 6 left until we reach the 500 event. We are still looking for ideas on how to celebrate this and open to your suggestions.
Well this was the first Saturday of the new decade and the volunteers were all prepared for the New Year resolutions rush. And they were right as 605 people came out to gain a new or continue with a fitness regime.

65 people chose to run Brueton for the first time this week, some runners recording a PB
including my running friend Janice LISIECKI who ran an amazing 25.44 and is now too fast to
run with me.
46 volunteers contributed to ensuring todays event took place, including myself. I’m currently injured and New Years Day I had major FOMO as I couldn’t join in, so decided this week I couldn’t miss out again so decided to volunteer. Don’t worry if you decide last minute, there’s usually room for an extra helper. For me volunteering is just as rewarding as running, especially while I cannot run. I often do a range of roles including Run Director to ensure you all get to run safely, some weeks I take the kit home (replace all the tokens that
have gone on their holidays, ensure the hi-vis are clean and that the kit is all in place for the following week) and some weeks I like to put my writing skills to the test and write the report. There are many roles which you can do whether before or after you run, instead of running, or even in the following week. Without the volunteers parkrun cannot exist and what else would we do on our Saturday mornings.

23 Running clubs were represented today. There are many in Solihull that are open to anyone that loves to run or wants to get better at running. The main clubs that are represented at Brueton include Knowle and Dorridge; This Girl Runs, Mums on the Run; Centurions, Solihull and Small Heath.
I am a member of K&D, and I just want to say running in a club is the best thing I ever did. Running with friends makes it so much more enjoyable, it motivates you more, and there’s always someone to have tea and cake with after parkrun.
If you feel you want want a bit more than the weekly parkrun don’t be afraid to ask a club member on a Saturday morning. You will usually see a club top before, during or after. If you’re not sure ask Andy the event Director as he knows most of them and can point you in the right direction.

parkrun report – 23rd November 2019 by Sandra BOOT

Brueton parkrun
Event number 487
23rd November 2019

Report

Well, I thought I’d be reporting from Sefton Park, Liverpool, this week from the England
Athletics Cross Challenge & European trials but my son, Louie, picked up an injury & had to withdraw.

So, apologies, you will have to hear about my attempt at cross country instead.
Now in my 10th year of supporting Louie at cross country, you would think I’d know a thing or two about what it entails. After a few trail runs & splashing though some muddy puddles with gay abandon, I thought I did & my running club’s evocative ‘marketing’ of cross-country, including the promise that I’d become ‘strong like an ox’, lured me into finally giving it a go this year. I managed to resurrect an ancient pair of running spikes & trotted off to cross country training at Elmdon Park on a glorious sunny, frosty morning where, despite the hills & hard work, fun & laughter was much in evidence. That was it, I was bitten by the bug & ventured to sign up to the Midlands Women’s cross country league.

Fast forward to the 1st fixture: division 1 at Burton Dassett Hills, torrential rain, the forecastpromising, & probably delivering, a ‘feels like -3C wind chill’, & when they said hills, theyweren’t lying! According to Strava at one point the gradient was 24%! Even the downhill bitsfelt like they were uphill, with a camber so steep that I ended up having to jab my footsideways in the mud to try & stop myself hurtling down the incline! Add in a liberal dose of the bloomin’ lurgy lungs, who’d thoughtfully decided to rock on up for the mud bath party, along with so much rain in my eyes that I actually couldn’t see & suddenly my rose-tintedspectacled view of cross country was dead in one of the many large muddy puddles.
What on earth was I thinking?????
But….despite me hating 41 & ¾ minutes of my 42 minute run, being so cold I had to wear 3 coats & a hat to travel home in the car, being drenched to the skin & plastered with mud, vowing that I would ‘never, EVER, do that again’, I think I might actually do it again.
The team spirit was amazing, the post-run cakes delicious, newly-promoted K&D is currently sitting at a satisfying 7th/17 in division 1 & although I had to walk at times (probably quite a lot of the time), I felt that I had actually achieved something. I have the utmost respect for anyone who does cross country. It is really tough; rain rarely stops play & hills & mud are viewed as a good thing! But it is also really exhilarating & although there was way more hill than I was happy with, there was something quite liberating about plundering through the mud & puddles without a care with such stunning scenery as a backdrop.
And, amazingly, the ‘strong like an ox’ promise actually delivered & somehow, just a week after my baptism of fire, I achieved a 33 sec PB at parkrun. My romantic notion of cantering across sun-warmed fields was a far cry from the reality of mud-spattered slithering across tempest-lashed slopes but it was certainly an interesting, though not entirely pleasurable, experience, much improved by the rose-tinted spectacles of hindsight.

parkrun report – 26th October 2019 by Pippin

Report
Mum says we’re going to do parkrun this morning. No idea what that is but with the words, “Park” and “Run” in the title, it has to be good, right?

The park is unusually busy for such a soggy morning and the ratio of humans to dogs is highly irregular, so forgive me if I’m feeling a little bit sceptical right now. Although there’s a tall handsome looking fellow sporting a shiny red collar over by the tennis courts, must try a sneaky sniff of that butt if I can get close enough.

Ok, so we’re all gathered here, what happens now? Wow! Who knew humans could move so fast! Maybe this is going to be fun after all.

This is so cool! Thirty minutes later and mum’s still running with me, I’ll remember this next time she asks me to fetch the tennis ball, she’s perfectly capable of doing it herself.

It’s finished and everyone is telling me what a “good girl” I am, and making a fuss of me. Could this get any better! I can’t wait until next week, when apparently I get to do it all again. I’ll have to remind mum to keep me on my short lead though, as I spotted a couple of tasty looking squirrels along the way, which could easily have distracted me and I’d hate to trip anyone up.

Anyway, I’m off to introduce myself Mr Shiny Red Collar, hope to see you all soon.

19th October 2019

Report

This Saturday, 428 people (including 24 first timers ) ran, walked and jogged the Brueton parkrun course. It was ideal “exercise weather” resulting in 64 recorded PB’s.
The numbers were slightly down, probably due to it clashing with England playing Australia in the Rugby World Cup quarter finals. Of course, England beat Australia 40-16! This coming Saturday England’s semi finals match with New Zealand also clashes with parkrun!
This parkrun was 12 days before Britain attempts to leave the EU again!
Saturday was a good day for running because the weather was chilly, but dry. On the Sunday, I was played a badminton match for my club, and I won all 3 games I played. Unfortunately, that morning I was playing a rugby match against Tamworth, and my team lost.

5 Random numbers

England won 40-16 and the closest to 40:16 was Joan IBLE with a time of 40:44.
With 12 days till Brexit, in 12th was Paul BENTLEY with 19:57.
It was the legendary Margaret SMITH’s 335th run and in 335th was Sally WALTON with 33:40
There were 2 vegan runners and in 2nd was Habib FARAZMAND with 18:40
In 184th place was Chris WAKE with 27:59

Event number 473 and my first one as a Run Report Writer; my second one at Dolgellau parkrun, a flat course along the Mawddach river, on a disused railway, in the heart of Snowdonia which today, was shared with some ultra runners running a 50 miler. Fantastic views of Cadair Idris except I saw nothing as it was pouring down with strong gales. Despite miserable weather, there was a decent attendance; I finished 102 (ok, the Tail Walker was 103! But don’t tell anyone!) so if you are a slow runner like me and want a low position number, don’t hesitate to tour in smaller parkruns!
Event number 473 brought 506 walkers, joggers and runners enjoying 2 laps in our fine Brueton Park. I hope the weather was better for you! It was great to welcome 47 First Timers, hopefully, we will see you soon again. At position 473, Sophia Alexandra Harrison finished in 40’02.
Volunteering is a great way to enjoy parkrun from a different angle; with some roles allowing you to still run, jog or walk. So, why not support Brueton parkrun in the next few weeks?

parkrun report – 20th July 2019 by Tom Willson

Brueton parkrun
Event number 470
20th July 2019

Report
So, my 8 year old son has started at parkrun. He has currently done 7 runs, and has been getting quicker and quicker (apart from the day he ran with me!), so I asked him what he thought about parkrun, and what he thought about when he was running it. Here’s what he said!
“I like parkrun because it gives me exercise, and I like to beat my Dad! When I am doing parkrun, my legs hurt, but my mum keeps me going, and won’t let me walk! My Nanny is quicker than me, but not for long, as I am getting quicker every time I do it. I like to say thank you to the people who stand on the corners, but sometimes I am too out of breath to shout it! Every week, I ask for a cup of tea and a piece of cake after the run, from the café, because I think I deserve it! “
There were 518 folk who ran, jogged or walked round our two laps at Brueton, on a very warm and sticky morning! There were 32 first timers, and 58 PB’s! Even though it was hot, it was clearly a good running morning!

parkrun report – 29th June by David Hayes

Brueton parkrun
Event number 467
29th June 2019

Report
573 sun-hungry worshippers leapt out of bed to make the most of the hottest day of the year so far. When the run started the temperature was already 21 degrees centigrade. Surely this weather can’t last for the Wimbledon fortnight!

The heat did not perturb Omer AHMED from breaking the Brueton Park Male record with a cheeky time of 14:26; knocking 13 seconds off the record. Well done Omer - just think what time you could have achieved had it been a tad cooler!

Just to put into context how impressive this time was, Mo Farah ran 13:33:22 at the 2017 World Championships in London, just before he retired from track racing.

5 Random numbers
Today was run #467. In position 467 was Heather BENTLEY with a time of 34:33.

In 34th place was Chris BROCKBANK who ran his 72nd parkrun

In 72nd position was Jamie ROBERTS with an impressive time of 22:39.

Today at Brueton there were 49 recorded new Personal Bests. In 49th was Michael DACOMBE

Last Sunday was the Wythall 10K. In 8th position today was Dylan MURPHY who ran the 10K last weekend with a time of 37:32 (25 minutes faster than me) ... well done Dylan.
