Burnham and Highbridge parkrun #245

International Women's Day #IWDparkrun
by Becci Reeves

For the first time in what seems like forever, there was minimal wind for our 490 runners this morning at Apex Park. As part of the parkrun celebrations today runners were encouraged to wear purple and our volunteers were mostly ladies :) Before everyone sprinted off the start, run director Tracey Benton gathered some of the volunteers for a photo.

Finally, I'd like to provide my stand out memory from today's event was one of runners today Sabrina Cecconi, who went above and beyond to provide thanks to our volunteers with some beautiful brightly coloured bags. You handed them out with a smile and I'm sure everyone who received one was grateful.

Burnham and Highbridge parkrun Event #243 22nd February 2020

The storm with no name…

Whilst thankfully the rain stayed away this week, the wind was definitely an unwelcome visitor to Burnham and Highbridge today making for some tricky running conditions.

Having battled the winds along the coast, there were a lot less smiles, waves and aeroplanes on the way back into the park than usual:

Burnham and Highbridge parkrun #242

Storm Dennis, you came, you saw, however you did not conquer!
by Becci Reeves

Those of you who are regulars to Burnham and Highbridge know all too well about the infamous breeze. This morning Storm Dennis had other ideas with his own 'breeze' which no doubt made it hard for our 15 pacers and 316 other runners!

The slight drizzle just before 9am cleared for what looked like a windy overcast run, however that was not the case! Heavy rain along with being blown sideways was on the cards for everyone along the estuary path and promenade.

The weather didn't dampen the mood with smiles and jumps from lots of you :)

Our first finisher today was Kurtis Gibson in 15:48 (PB) followed by Adam Holland in 16:38, who is currently our course record holder. Just behind them having a closely fought battle for 3rd and 4th were Toby Norman in 17:48 and Hannah Taunton in 17:52.

Along with Kurtis we had another 30 personal bests today. Thank you to all the pacers who helped today and congratulations to the two of you who managed to get within two seconds of your bib time.
Pacers Award

We were joined by 60 first timers which included visitors from Taunton, Worcester, Pymnes Park (London), Ripon, Manchester, Cheltenham and Bridgwater Albion Rugby Club. Hopefully next time you visit the weather will be a bit nicer!

For those of you who don't know already, on 29th February we are going to be doing something different ... reversing the course! Please come and join in the with fun, as if its a leap year special we won't be doing it again until 2048.

Saving the best news from today's parkrun until last, we were joined by Sarah Flourentzou and massive group of #NoExcuses friends and family. For those who don't know Sarah for the last 18 months she's been going through chemo with her final treatment over the weekend. During this time she's completed all but 4 parkruns and has said "it's helped her to focus and keep going." You're such an inspiration and along with everyone else, I hope we continue to see you every week (unless your touristing at another event)

The parkrun weather fairies had worked their magic to ensure we had great conditions and gave us a break from the rain. It was fabulous to see the sunshine – it looked especially beautiful shining on the new course ‘water feature’ as the lake overflowed onto the path!

As usual for the third Saturday of the month, the volunteer team was bolstered by our fantastic pacer team which no doubt supported 42 people to achieve a personal best. Here are some of them before we started:

Burnham and Highbridge parkrun # 199 – 20/04/2019

Phew - wot a scorcher!

We're truly in the full-swing of the Easter now and the glorious weather coupled with a bank-holiday long weekend all came together today to produce a record-smashing attendance here at Burnham & Highbridge of 589  - that's an amazing 173 more than our previous best!
Whilst we were prepared for the expected holiday boost, this was way beyond our expectations and as you can appreciate with additional numbers comes additional work. Processing the results took a little longer than normal and we thank you for your patience. We also thank our amazing volunteers who stayed behind well after everyone else had left to crunch the numbers and get those all-important results emails out.

start easter

The course looked absolutely stunning today with the gorgeous spring sunshine and high tide only adding to the naturally stunning views along the river bank section.

boats

Running conditions today were almost perfect, albeit a little warmer than of late but a little sweat always make you feel like you earned that post parkrun treat right?

It was good to welcome so many of newcomers and Parkrun tourists of which a special mention must go to two amazing families:
The Stevens, who were represented by 3 generations including Anne who celebrated her 50th Birthday and nanny She, who at 73 was taking part for the first time today!
We also had a staggering 21 members of the Smith/Griffin Family - spanning 3 generations and made it here today from as far away as Australia - well done guys hope to see you next week ;-)

21 family

Making a welcome return today (and probably adding to the boost in numbers) were our ever popular pacers, providing a little boost and helping those chasing an elusive PB or just looking to run at a steady pace. Whilst it can prove a little tricky for the first few hundred metres until some "free-space" is found, tagging along with these indicators of estimated finish time are a great way of helping you achieve that goal.

Burnham and Highbridge parkrun # 194 – 16/03/2019

Blown away!

If you ask any of the regulars if they could think of a characteristic for Burnham and Highbridge parkrun, some would say the varied route with stunning views, others would say the fabulous atmosphere and wonderfully friendly volunteers but for some it's what we call the "Burnham breeze" and for the second week on the trot we've certainly been blessed with our fair share of it!

Conditions today whilst certainly easier than last week were still a little challenging to say the least. That said, it didn't stop 288 runners, joggers or walkers from getting their heads down, pushing through the challenge and taking on the best start to the weekend that is Parkrun - well done everyone!

It was good to welcome so many of newcomers and Parkrun tourists of which a special shout-out is deserving to Karen & Richard Borril who stopped off specially en-route on their journey from Nottingham to Cornwall. Thanks for visiting and we hope you enjoyed the course.

As per usual, our small army of volunteers braved the elements and were out beavering away hours before, during and after 9am.
To give you an idea of what it takes to make it happen, today we had:
1 Run director
2 Results processors
3 time keepers
3 Barcode scanners
3 Number checkers
1 Funnel manager
1 Finish token person
5 Course marshalls
1 Tail-walker
1 Photographer
1 Communications person
1 Run Report writer
2 Pre-event setup persons
15 Pacers
