Parkrun Report / Saturday 8th September

Well you can tell summer is over as this week as we had a bumper turnout of 313 parkrunners, which included a large contingent from the local RAF regiment in addition to 45 first timers!  The weather on Saturday was decidedly autumnal, bringing with it a much lower temperature than experienced over the summer; no doubt a welcome relief to all.

George Wickers completed his 100th parkrun this week, joining that exclusive 100 club. This week also saw the introduction of a new Run Director at Bury. Zachary Strickland has been a regular volunteer over the past months and has agreed to become the sixth member of the RD team, which is fantastic news. So we are very fortunate to have such a strong RD team but sometimes struggle to fill volunteer roles, so please do look out for volunteer appeals and help when you can.

The event was made possible by 18 volunteers:

Maureen MCCARTHY • Martin LITTLE • Claire HOBLYN • Monica BOSWORTH • Martin ALLUM • Jasmin RAJA • Matthew BULLOCK • Kirsty WEAVERS • Sharon PLACE • Jonathan GORMAN • Bill HILL • Asia DAVIES • Rachel MARSH • Rachel TERRY • Zachary STRICKLAND • Daniel COOK • Imogen BLACK • Samuel WEBBER

Event Number 262 Run Report / 18th August 2018

This week saw 252 people run, jog or walk parkrun of whom 32 were first timers and 39 recorded new Personal Bests. We also noted an increase in volunteers from previous weeks which must mean we are approaching the end of summer holidays.

We had two Tail Walkers this week as, following on from the success of #teamparkrun last August, parkrun have teamed up again with The National Lottery and UK Sport and invited Britain's top athletes to volunteer as Tail Walkers across the country over the next few weekends. We of course have our own local top athlete in the shape of Callum Wilkinson who very kindly agreed to Tail Walk on Saturday, despite having only just returned from the European Championships. Callum is a Race Walker and currently ranked 2nd in the UK and 50th in the world. He also holds the U23 UK record at all distances. Callum teamed up with Jamie Raja, one of our DofE volunteers, and managed to refrain from walking at his usual pace! It was observed Callum can race walk faster than the majority of parkrunners can run!

We also had Kelvin (who gets a regular mention in these reports) run parkrun blindfolded, ably assisted by Alison.  This was to celebrate his 200th official parkrun, although that figure rises to 314 when combined with the unofficial runs. It was on one of these unofficial runs that Alison observed he could probably complete the course blindfolded ...

So lots happened this week and all made possible by the following 16 volunteers:

Linda Jane HANDCOCK • Frank MOGGAN • Sarah ASBURY • Claire HOBLYN • Steve MURTON • Jan MURTON • Odette ROBSON • Ruth EBERHARDT • Callum WILKINSON • Jamie RAJA • Asia DAVIES • Justin FLETCHER • Zachary STRICKLAND • Daniel COOK • Andrew GRANT • Samuel WEBBER

Bury St Edmunds parkrun Event 253, 2nd June 2018

Wasn't it nice to be back running in Nowton Park on Saturday! This week 231 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 30 were first timers and 35 recorded new Personal Bests.

Don't forget, we now have yet another two week break, with our next run on 23rd June and then on 30th it will be our 5th Anniversary (and if all goes to plan, my 100th run!) We will then be running every week through the summer months.

This week, we marked National Volunteer Week - with quite a few of us wearing the fabulous 25 volunteering occassions purple teeshirt - see updated Facebook cover photo.

The event was made possible by 10 volunteers:

Linda Jane HANDCOCK • Stephen PRETTY • Claire HOBLYN • Jenny MORGAN • Brice EASDOWN • Asia DAVIES • Philip BROWN • Zachary STRICKLAND • Alastair YOUNG • Imogen BLACK

For our next run on 23rd, Susan Dunne takes over as RD. We have a good few volunteers on the roster already - but we do need two timekeepers, someone to help sort the tokens and some marshals. If you would like to help (and work toward that fabulous imperial purple teeshirt) contact us at

This week we welcomed the following runners into our parkrun teeshirt clubs:

10 Club (Juniors): Molly Howell

50 Club: Paul Dockerill (managing a new PB in all the excitement!) and Tim Lodge

100 Club: Heidi Berry

Well done to you all.

Bury St Edmunds parkrun, Event number 246, 31st March 2018

This week 205 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 29 were first timers and 12 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 24 different clubs took part.
The event was made possible by 13 volunteers:

Maureen MCCARTHY • Linda Jane HANDCOCK • Claire HOBLYN • Matt EASDOWN • Ruth EBERHARDT • Cathy LAMBERT • Kelly PEPPER • Susan DUNNE • Sharon PLACE • Janet HARDIKER • Asia DAVIES • Zachary STRICKLAND • Daniel COOK

A week of rain meant the course today was back to its muddy best, although no one seemed to mind. Kelvin was dressed up as ... the Easter bunny and looked very fetching in a pair of rabbit ears; we rarely see Kelvin dressed as Kelvin these days!

Tracie Emerson and Ashley Simpson both completed their 50th parkrun today, and a tub of chocolates was donated to mark the occasion. There were only a handful left at the end which I have generously given a home to!

It was good to welcome Simon Ellice to his first Bury parkrun. He is Run Director from Castle Park parkrun in Bishop's Stortford and was staying locally for the weekend. It was lovely to catch up and swap ideas; he was particularly interested in Steve's token sorting board which has proved to be a big hit with all the Bury RDs and means "Token Sorter" is now an essential volunteer role on the roster.

In my briefing today I mentioned there are a few Bury parkrun cancellations over the summer which you may like to note and are confirmed as follows:

19 May
26 May
9 June
16 June
29 September

Nowton Park hosts a number of events throughout the summer which sometimes means we are unable to have our usual Saturday morning slot; but of course there are other local parkruns for those who need their weekly 5k fix!

Happy Easter to everyone from the Bury parkrun team!

Bury St Edmunds parkrun Event 245, 24th March 2018

This week 219 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 16 were first timers and 27 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 17 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 18 volunteers:

Maureen MCCARTHY • Sarah ASBURY • Stephen PRETTY • Nigel SCHOFIELD • Claire HOBLYN • Steve MURTON • Jan MURTON • Zohra ARMITAGE • Dawn MARSHALL • Ollie ARMITAGE • Sharon PLACE • Asia DAVIES • Clare KEEFE • Vivienne HOUGHTON • Zachary STRICKLAND • Daniel COOK • Jacob COOK • Imogen BLACK

Loads to celebrate this week with a number of anniversary runs; Dan Mead achieving his 50th, Adrian Place his 100th and John Cashen his 150th! We also celebrated the arrival of the daffodils along The Avenue and the departure of the mud, making the course so much easier to navigate, even with the fallen down tree still in situ.

Kelvin was dressed as himself, rather than a leprechaun, this week and we were very happy to announce that the youth group from Southgate Church he brought along to parkrun last Saturday had reached their fund raising target of £500. This will be donated to Sport Relief and is a tremendous effort.

Finally we said goodbye to Jacob Cook who as a Duke of Edinburgh student has been volunteering with us for the past three months. Thank you Jacob for all his help and we hope he continues to join us on Saturday mornings.

Bury St Edmunds parkrun Event 244, 17th March 2018

This week 155 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 17 were first timers and 4 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 17 different clubs took part. Well done to all of you who braved the mini beast from the east. Fortunately, our course was pretty clear of snow this time around, so we were able to run. Don't know about you, but I certainly found the cold conditions and sticky ground a challenge - but none the less, very enjoyable! I noticed the daffodils are coming into flower - I'm sure they will be looking quite spendid by next Saturday. Hope to see you all then.

Congratulations to David Hicks and Rich Renson who joined the 100 club this week!

Thanks to Kelvin and his group from Southgate Church for joining us this week and providing tasty finishers "medals". Hope the Sports Relief fund raising worked well. Don't you think Kelvin looked a treat in his leprechaun costume? A nice touch for St Patrick's day.

The event was made possible by 12 volunteers:

Christine ANTHONY • Maureen MCCARTHY • Claire HOBLYN • Mark DUNN • Sharon PLACE • Asia DAVIES • Richard SMITH • Vernon YULE • Zachary STRICKLAND • Daniel COOK • Jacob COOK • Imogen BLACK

Many thanks to Mark who has finished his stint as RD. Claire is now taking over for the next two weeks. This week, she needs someone to hand out finish tokens, a scanner and plenty of marshals. I've already volunteered for the tail walker spot (big 20 mile race planned for Sunday!) If you would like to volunteer, visit for more details.

See you Saturday, Steve

Bury St Edmunds parkrun Event 243, 10th March 2018

This week 153 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 13 were first timers and 1 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 16 different clubs took part.

I understand conditions were very wet at Bury St Edmunds - so well done to those of you who braved the course. I was at Haverhill to inaugurate their event - also rather soggy! It will be great to have another event nearby - Haverhill offers a flat grass course with good prospects for some fast times, so I am looking forward to my future visits there.

Congratulations to Mark Davies who completed his 100th run this week! I can see several of you are on 49 or 99, so looking forward to some more celebration this Saturday!

The event was made possible by 16 volunteers:

Maureen MCCARTHY • Caroline TUCK • Graham PAGE • Martin LITTLE • Sarah ASBURY • Richard GRIMSDELL • Martin Charles TILLEY • Mark DUNN • Steve MURTON • Jan MURTON • Jenny MORGAN • Asia DAVIES • Zachary STRICKLAND • Daniel COOK • Jacob COOK • Imogen BLACK

Mark is RD again this week and is looking for someone to hand out finish tokens, a tail walker and lots of lovely marshals!

Thanks to all who have contributed to our 250th Event / 5th Anniversary appeal - 20 supporters so far have raised £273. Of course with the snow cancellation, our 250th will now occur on Saturday 28th April. Find out more about the appeal at

Bury St Edmunds parkrun Event 242 24th February 2018

Congratulations to everyone who scraped the ice off their cars and braved the roads to turn out for the run. Even more respect to those who walked, ran or cycled to the park. On a freezing cold beautifully sunny morning the mud was frozen and the course was faster than it has been recently. Everyone managed not to trip on the rutted areas and our marshals were warmly wrapped up and avoided freezing! We were glad to welcome several first-timers and visitors from other runs who sought me out at the end of the run to say how much they liked our course. This week 214 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 19 were first timers and 37 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 27 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 15 volunteers:
Stephen PRETTY • Frank EALES • Iain HUNTER • John CULLUM • Kate BEER • Olly BEER • Adam CLARKE • Susan DUNNE • Sharon PLACE • Lucia BERRY • Asia DAVIES • Richard LEEDER • Eleanor WALLIS • Zachary STRICKLAND • Daniel COOK - special thanks to Kate Beer, who took photos which have been published on our Facebook page.

Do consider volunteering - it is good fun and the roles are straightforward. Often people volunteer if they are unable to participate because of minor injuries, resting prior to an event, or accompanying a participant. You can still enjoy the spirit of the parkrun with a glow from being part of the team that make it possible.

Well done to William Terry who completed his 50th run in great style.

As we have been telling you Bury St Edmunds parkrun is approaching its 250th event. To recognise this we are raising money for the My Heart Matters appeal to raise funds for cardiology services at our local West Suffolk Hospital - details of how to donate can be found on the Facebook page. So far we have had 14 kind donations raising £191 for "Every Heart Matters". We are hoping to welcome a take over team from the cardiac unit, who will volunteer and run on the 14th April. They also plan to be at our 250th event - more news to follow.

See you next Saturday!

Bury St Edmunds parkrun Event 241, 17th February 2018

What a beautiful sunny morning it was in the park! I really enjoyed setting up the event and RDing it for you all. This week 226 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 27 were first timers and 32 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 21 different clubs took part. Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Bury St Edmunds parkrun Results Page.

Plenty of celebrations today - Richard Grimsdell and Rakesh Raja were both celebrating their 50th Birthday (thanks for the chocolates Rakesh!). Martin Tilley was celebrating his 79th Birthday.

Nathaniel Lowis, who is doing his DofE physical activity with us, joined the 10 club (juniors only) - well done!

We had a wonderful team of 15 volunteers this week - so many willing hands really do make parkrun light work for the RD, and really enjoyable for the runners. Thanks to:

Christine ANTHONY • Maureen MCCARTHY • Stephen PRETTY • Claire HOBLYN • Jenny MORGAN • Steve ROBINSON • Rod MANSEL • David MARTIN • Dawn MARSHALL • Martin COOK • Sharon PLACE • Asia DAVIES • Zachary STRICKLAND • Jacob COOK • Imogen BLACK

I've finished my two weeks as RD now and have handed over to Susan. I hope to be running with you next Saturday and then I'll be away for a couple of weeks helping to launch Haverhill parkrun! This week, Susan needs volunteers to help with timekeeping, finish tokens and marshalling. Please get in touch if you can help.

Our 250th event / 5 year anniversary appeal is starting to gain some momentum. We have had 12 donations, totalling £161. If you would like to give, visit.

I'm sure you will also be aware that the BBC Sport Relief campaign is now well underway. If you like to support this charity, please consider doing so at parkrun. Kelvin Johnson, one of our regular runners and volunteers is a youth leader, and will be bringing some of his group to run at our event. They are getting themselves sponsored for Sport Relief and we have decided to allow them to collect at the event if you would like to give. We won't be doing that often at our event, but it seemed right to do something for Sport Relief, as parkrun is focussed on creating a happier and healthier planet through our sport.

See you Saturday

This week 169 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 14 were first timers and 21 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 13 different clubs took part.

It was well cold out there on the course, so really well done to those of you who took on the challenge!

Congratulations to Elliot Mead and Caitlin McKay who completed their 10th runs to earn the white teeshirt (juniors only).

The event was made possible by 16 volunteers:

Stephen PRETTY • Martin Charles TILLEY • Kelvin JOHNSON • Steven BIGGS • Siobhan HOLCOMBE • Laura DAVIES • Susan DUNNE • Isabel BEER • Sharon PLACE • Asia DAVIES • Jo RACKHAM • Zachary STRICKLAND • Daniel COOK • Abby FREELEY • Jacob COOK • Imogen BLACK

Next Saturday, we have volunteer vacancies for a timekeeper, finish tokens support and marshals. Please get in touch via our parkrun web page future volunteer tab.

This Saturday, we launched our 250th Event / 5th Anniversary appeal. We are raising money to improve cardiac care at our local hospital, through the My Wish "Every Heart Matters". Very many thanks to the 7 of you that have already contributed £71 (plus gift aid) to the appeal. Hopefully many more of you will contribute before our 250th event on April 21st. I've set the target to £250 now, and I'll personally make sure we donate at least that symbolic amount! Ideally, If we hit £250, I'll increase the target in £250 steps.

See you Saturday
