What a beautiful August morning for parkrun – sunny, warm and a very light breeze. But wait, Ray Coward was not RD this morning so what was going on? All would be revealed….

I don’t know about you but the crowd for the First Timers Briefing seems to be getting bigger each week. Steve could have done with a megaphone to get the message to the throng that gathered at the start. We had visitors from Australia, South Africa, Cornwall, Northampton, Norwich, Leighton Buzzard, Itchen, Worcester, Bramley and many other places.

We had a total of 1,381 assorted runners and walkers supported by 57 superb volunteers including a team of top pacers. There were 145 PBs (11%), 71 first timers and 237 doing Bushy for the first time – 18% of the field. We had a host of milestones including four 250s, six 100s and five 50s.

Elisabeth had a friendly marshal this week to keep her company…There were plenty of cheers and thanks for both John & Elisabeth

Being the third week of an even month we had a crack team of even numbered pacers out in force - 20-34mins. We have a had a lot of positive feedback about the work and encouragement of the pacers which really are a highlight of Bushy parkrun each month. Congratulations to everyone who got a PB with their help and if not there is always next week or next month if you need that extra nudge.

Tourists and other First timers

We had 237 first timers this week of which 71 were doing their first ever parkrun which is a very healthy addition to the parkrun community.
Some of you may have noticed a number of coloured crayons running amongst us. This is a group of occasional parkrun tourists from Northampton parkrun. They often make a mark with fundraising events and certainly drew a lot of attention.

250 club
Four runners reached the magical 250 milestone this week – congratulations to John McKENZIE, Alexandra WATSON-USHER, Bob DEAN and Jason GOLDER. John and Alex had separately travelled to Bushy to do their 250. John normally runs at Netley Abbey near Southampton whilst Alex was making the pilgrimage from Roundhay near Leeds.
Alex’s husband Jason WATSON-USHER takes up the story:
“My wife is a massive parkrun "ambassador" who volunteers as the communications volunteer at our home run at Roundhay in Leeds. It was here that I used to be the Volunteer Coordinator, so I understand the amount of admin that goes into each and every event (I can only imagine how complex it is at your event!).
It's my wife's 250th parkrun this Saturday the 17th of August (one day before her birthday too) and she's chosen Bushy, the home of parkrun, to achieve this milestone.
She's so passionate about the whole parkrun ethos and promotes this at every opportunity. To the extent that she's convinced her two brothers to travel from parts of the UK and her sister and brother in law to head over from Ireland, just for this milestone event.”

So happy birthday Alex and hope you had a great day at Bushy. I bet you can’t wait for the green t shirt. Here is Alex with husband Jason and her brother and family:

Bob DEAN did his first parkrun on 14 July 2012 and has been a Bushy regular ever since, with 156 at the cradle of parkrun and a PB of 21:32. Bob and I often finish around the same time and is one of the guys I have met and chatted to in the funnel #parkrunbuddies. Bob told me he recently joined 26.2 Running Club to help focus his training so I may have to up my game to finish alongside. Here’s Bob after his triumphant 250th run:

500 club
No 500 clubbers this week. Next up looks to be between Jeremy PALMER on 498 and Nigel POOLE and David WORTH each on 497.
But there is news of another 500 clubber. The legendary uber tourist Roy REEDER achieved the incredible feat of doing his 250th different parkrun at Uckfield, East Sussex this weekend. Here is Roy suitably flagged alongside Bushy regulars and fellow 500 clubbers Carol DICKINSON and Becky THURTELL.

And strolling round the funnel I spotted our very own Ray “of sunshine” which explains the weather for the day! Ray has over 500 volunteer credits to his name. Here he is with “fellow” 500 clubber (on runs), Ramona.
