Run Report Event No 825 – 11 January 2020

The Young Ones

Today a Bushy Park regular ran her 250th parkrun. Not too remarkable these days; today there were 188 people at Bushy parkrun who have run 250+ parkruns. However, what does make this particular young lady remarkable is that she is only 9 years old!! Isabel you are a star.

Isabel's achievement is the inspiration for this week's report - the young people who turn up on a Saturday and trundle round 5K in all weathers. It has to be said, some are happier about it than others, but the fact they are there at all is to be commended.

The first youngster I met this morning was Eva, only 8 years old, and at parkrun as a volunteer. Today Eva was tailwalking - thank you so much Eva, your support is much appreciated.

IMG_4405

The next two were Sophie age 9 and Alice, just 4. They were visiting Bushy parkrun with their running group - Burgess Hill Runners

IMG_4410

Here are the rest of the group which includes the Brighton and Hove parkrun core team.

IMG_4408

Walking down to the start I met Eva aged 8 on her third parkrun and Jack aged 10 on his fourth.

IMG_4416

Sophie and Alice were both listening intently at the First Timer's briefing ably given by Mike Tivnen

IMG_4417

I came across teenager, Isla 13, at the briefing doing her first parkrun today......

IMG_4419

........ and at the start found Leah, another 13 year old, who has done over 200 parkruns.

IMG_4423

Counting down to the start now, and on the line I found regulars Seth age 7, and Kit age 5. Seth has done an amazing 124 parkruns. Kit ran parkrun number 56 today and got a new PB. Well done both of you.

IMG_4430

Georgie age 8 was waiting to start her 14th parkrun.

IMG_4432

Now back to Isabel who was with her family and waiting to run parkrun number 250

Off we all go again for Bushy parkrun number 825. We had a field of 1663 runners - 152 less than last week, have they all fallen off the New Year's Resolution Band Wagon already?!!

IMG_4438

I spoke to a number of youngsters on the way round. I caught up with Ralph who was running as part of a group celebrating a 40th birthday. Ralph had not done parkrun before and had intended to stop at the 'Butterfly' where their cheer group was waiting. However, he decided to push on to the end, and beat me on a sprint to the line. Well done Ralph, hope to see you back again.

Sporting a very fetching Spiderman top was 6 year old Tyler completing his 26th parkrun. Tyler has also completed 41 Junior Parkruns - well done Tyler.

IMG_4459

Daniel age 9 has done over 50 parkruns. Great action picture with excellent 'photobombing' by Joy!

Daniel age 9

8 year old Molly was completing her first parkrun today and did really well.

IMG_4463

And so to the finish, as we walked, pushed, stumbled, jogged or sprinted our way across. The welcome sight of the funnel and the orange finish signs spurs us all on.

Thank you funnel team

So another parkrun is over, and as we mill about under the famous tree, chatting and basking in the post run glow, I find Matthew and James, the 9 year old twins who run at Bushy parkrun week in, and week out. Matthew has completed 213 runs and 168 Junior parkruns, James has completed 210 runs and 171 Junior parkruns - how amazing is that?!

Some interesting stats about youngsters completing today's run

Totally useless fact:

Most popular female name for 17 and under was Sophie, followed by Ella
Most popular male name for 17 and under was Matthew, followed by Oliver/Olly

More interesting fact

We had 22 Junior men 10 years old and under (JM10)
These ranged from first time runners, second time runners (well done for coming back), to James and Matthew who have run over 200. One young man is two runs off his 50th, three have recently achieved their 50th and two are on the way to 100. Oliver and Seth are well over 100 now having completed 147 and 124 respectively.

There were 28 Junior women 10 years old and under (JW10)
There were eight first time runners, two on their 2nd and three on their 3rd. Two girls are not far off their 50th parkrun, one has just achieved hers and another half way between milestones on 70 runs. Then there is a massive gap to Isabel on her 250th.

What amazing statistics for children only 10 and under.

In the JM (11-14) we had 21 runners and in the JM (15-17) we had 19 young men.
In the JW (11-14) we had 20 runners and in the JW (15-17) we had 15 young women

Who says you can't get teenagers out of bed in the morning?! Well done to all of you and to the wonderful young volunteers who come out to help parkrun flow like a well oiled machine.
