The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at Bushy parkrun, and third time lucky for us!
The Woodland Gardens in Bushy
Today, as well as it being the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee parkrun event, it was also our third time lucky attempt at joining you at Bushy Park. We were all set to join you with friends from York and South Africa on Saturday 21st March 2020, but we all know that the Covid-19 lockdown meant that was the first week parkruns were cancelled.
Undeterred, we rebooked for 2nd April this year, only to test positive with Covid a few days earlier meaning we had to stay at home and receive photos of your course from our friends!
So, today we finally made it. Walking up from Teddington in the rain, we reached Bushy Park by 8.20am and couldn’t believe the number of people already there! It was a very well coordinated event, from the volunteer coordinators’ registration desk, through to the large course map for the first timers’ briefing, and the friendly marshals on the course. We’ve never experienced cycling marshals before, nor such large numbers of participants (New Earswick, our home parkrun, usually gets around 80 runners, and it’s a busy week if there’s 100+)
Quite a few people were sporting red, white and blue to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee, as well as a long list of people celebrating milestones. Sorry we didn’t get chance to take photos of everyone, but we did get one of Ruth Perkins and her friend, Amy Foxton. Ruth, from Manchester, was at Bushy as part of her birthday celebrations and Amy and Ruth’s partner, Chris Whitehead, were doing their first ever parkrun. Happy birthday, Ruth, hope you had a good day.
One of those celebrating her 100th parkrun was Sophie Elsworth from Australia. Congratulations.
Joe, our 13 year old grandson, decided to ‘go for it’ today and ended up with a PB.
Here are his comments about his first visit to Bushy parkrun:
Today there were really good conditions for running. It was mild and drizzling so it wasn’t too warm, and it’s a nice flat course with only one small incline. We saw deer on the course too. Perfect conditions for a PB and I’m really pleased I got one (22:17).
Rob is still regaining fitness after Covid and was delighted that he ran his fastest time for a few months. I ran/walked with our 11 year old granddaughter and it felt like a nature spotting trip - we saw squirrels, ducks, and a large herd of deer.
We also chatted to Maria, from Canberra in Australia and we will be looking out for her when she visits Yorkshire later in the month.
Thanks to all of the volunteers and well done to everyone for getting out and taking part this morning, especially those getting PBs, reaching milestones or doing their first parkrun.

Incidentally, one of the friends we were supposed to visit with earlier in the year completed his 100th parkrun this morning at Millfield parkrun in Easingwold, North Yorkshire. We missed seeing him run around the course dressed like this!!!
We had a great time at Bushy parkrun and hope to join you again before too long!
