Event #62 – New Course Record

Saturday dawned with a beautiful, autumnal feel. The leaves are changing but it was dry underfoot and by 9am it was feeling positively sultry at the start of the 62nd parkrun at California Country Park. There was clearly something in the air, because of the 151 finishers, 41 set a new PB. And I heard several people say they had just missed a best time. I can even confirm that my own time was the fastest since our return in August.

Among these new Personal Bests were the first female home, Sarah McDade and one of our co-Event Directors, Chris Manton. One new PB was an incredible 8 minutes faster than last week's time. Every new PB, regardless of time and position, is an outstanding effort and achievement from the individual.  The event is a run; the race is only ever against ourselves.  It's one of the reasons we get addicted!

We do however need to trumpet one more PB. Daniel Brookling ran 15:57, setting a new course record in the process! The old record of 16:11 was set on Christmas Day, 2019, by … Daniel Brookling! Massive congratulations to Daniel, and a thank you to him as well, as California Country can now claim to be a sub-16 minute course.

No parkrun can take place without the unstinting support of the volunteers. Whether they are marshalling, timing, scanning or setting up, their value is immense. So if you’ve just set a PB, and maybe recently reached a milestone Tee, why not add volunteering to your parkrun roll of achievements?  According to a recent survey, 84% of parkrun volunteers feel happier as a result of volunteering.

Event #61 The Number Checker

If you are a regular parkrunner, you will recognise this experience.  You’ve just slogged around a 5k course, with an incredible sprint for the last 25 metres, you’re gasping for breath with a little token in your hand, and someone comes up to you and asks, “Can I have your name, please?”  Who is this person?  And why are they doing this?
This person is the Number Checker, and they are a vital part of the weekly parkrun team, making sure that those oh so precious results are correct when they are published a few hours later.  Roughly every 10 finishers, the Number Checker gets their time and position from the Timekeeper.  They then follow that finisher and once they have taken their finishing token, the Number Checker asks for their name and for the number on the token.  If everything is running smoothly, the token will match the position given by the TimeKeeper.  If the numbers don’t match, there is an issue which is reported to the Run Director.
At certain times of the event, there can be multiple finishers within a short space of time, so the gap can stretch to 15 to 20 people, but at least the work of the Number Checker ensures multiple check points along the way.  They may not be actually doing the event, but the Number Checker still racks up the metres, walking up and down the funnel. There are multiple reasons why the results become distorted and there is rarely time to fix the issue at the time, so it is corrected when the results are processed.
Last week saw 177 finishers on a beautiful autumnal day at California Country parkrun, of which 59 were First Timers.  9 people were doing parkrun for the first time.  There were 49 new Personal Best times.  The first finisher was Stuart Roberts in a time of 19:08 and the first female finisher was Sarah McDade in a new PB of 19:47.
Congratulations to everyone who took part and, as ever, a massive thank you to all the volunteers.  The event cannot take place without these wonderful Hi-Viz Heroes.

Event #59 The First of a New Term

The start of a new school year brings the turning of the colour of the leaves and slightly chillier mornings.... or so it should!

187 of you completed the course on Saturday with 15 who were brand new to parkrun - well done and we hope to see you again soon. We had 46 other parkrunners who were running Cali parkrun for the first time - we hope you enjoyed our course.

A further 42 PBs this week - what are you all having for breakfast?? You are smashing these out.

This week we had one milestone run with Chris Connor reaching the red Tshirt status by completing his 50th run.

From the looks of it there are quite a few milestones coming up too.

It goes without saying a huge thank you to our volunteers who we could do this without - thank you to each and everyone of you.

See you again on Saturday for more of the same

Event #58 – We are back

And.... we're back with a bang

By Gill Manton, Co-Event Director

I was like a kid in the run up to Christmas last week, lots of preparation and anticipation of what Saturday would bring, how many would attend, would we have enough volunteers, would our neighbours and other park users be pleased to see us?

Saturday dawned bright and early and I was awake before 5am - what had I forgotten, would people realise we were back what with the website still showing us as cancelled until Wednesday - well I need not have worried at all. When we arrived in the park the welcome from the early dog walkers was just delightful so many pleased to see us back and wishing us well.

Paul Jenkins mentioned to me before the briefing that we had been away from parkrun for longer than California parkrun had been going which isn't something that I'd considered but boy was it good to be back and it felt like a comfy pair of slippers - lots of familiar faces.

175 of you rocked up to show how much you had missed California Country parkrun of which 43 of  you were visiting us for the first time, we hope you visit again soon, we also had 8 joining us for their very first parkrun and we'd love to see you back at Cali soon.

Now for the rest of you clearly you have been running lots in the weeks we have been gone as 42 of you achieved PBs - well done!

We had five milestones achieved on Saturday: Paul Aberson, Hannah Cole, Laura Shambrook, John Mitcham all achieving their 50th parkrun achievement - we look forward to seeing those red tshirts soon! Nathan also achieved Junior 10 - that white tshirt will look incredible when you get it

We couldn't have held the event on Saturday without our fabulous volunteers - thank you to each and everyone of you and well done for embracing the new technology too - if you'd like to join the merry band of volunteers do let us know by emailing in to californiacountry@parkrun.com
