Cannon Hill parkrun, Birmingham
Event number 500
20th November 2021
Early Saturday morning and Cannon Hill Park is peaceful and beautiful with Autumn colours on the leaves. Good temperature for November and dry. The bandstand area fills with high vis heroes briefed by regular Volunteer Co-ordinator Geoff Hughes. Early arrivals question the quiet at 8:40, wait…
Arriving early, I locked my bike to the coveted early cyclist position on the benches around the bandstand. Later arrivals line all the railings with their bikes and not to forget all those who have run, walked or jogged to parkrun. “Running here and doing parkrun is fine. It’s the running home afterwards that’s tough” I am told.
The next twenty minutes sees parkrunners arrival from every direction from car parks, streets and paths converging on the bandstand. Running club flags are erected; Sparkhill Harriers, Kings Heath Running Club, BRAT and Swifts. Bournville Harriers, my club, was well represented in pink (volunteering) and teal (our club colours) but our flag was on a day trip to Cross Country Races. All the clubs welcomed and chatted to potential interested new members.
Quiet please for the run brief and Run Director Mary Ross announces Cannon Hill parkrun’s 500th event there is a huge cheer and applause. Cheers for individual milestones and the volunteers are enthusiastically thanked. Mary tells us that she and Helen have been here since the start and are keen to welcome new Run Directors. Volunteering is a great way to be involved with parkrun, helping the events to happen and there really is a role for everyone. The event was made possible by 53 volunteers:
Martin FOSTER • Clare MULLIN • Helen BLOOMER • Mary ROSS • Andrew WHEELER • Lesley LUCAS • Daniel WILSON • Philomena Rose WILLIAMSON • Simon NEWMAN • David CHAPMAN • Barbara PARTRIDGE • Sarah TANCRED • Joanne RIBCHESTER • Helen WARD • David Duncan WILLIAMS • Steve DOSWELL • John CHEEL • Keith EVANS • Derick Thomas YATES • Emma HOPKINS • Linda SODERLUND • John SUFFIELD • Sylvia HUGHES • Chrissie BOYER • Geoffrey HUGHES • Sameen FAROUK • Andrew TANCRED • Ian BUSH • Janet MOIR • Annette NAUDIN • Peter HICKMAN • Aaron LLOYD-MCARTHUR • Ron CATTLE • Aimee WHITE • Surinder KAUR • Rachel SIMMONITE • Keith TRACY • Robert SAUNDERS • Andrea EHGARTNER • Ciaran TURNBULL • Lauren MONTGOMERY • Muzafer SALIF • Thomas RIBCHESTER • Eleanor RIBCHESTER • Allan POPE • Sinead CROSS • Adam VINCENT • Michael RAVENHILL • Oliver KIERNAN • Alexa WADE • Ben SMITH • Tian FELTON • Quincy LEUNG
The wide path is then filled with everyone lining up to start and the sound of hellos and enjoy as we set off. Milestone T shirts, running club tops, parkrun apricot a rainbow of parkrunners apparel as the tide of starters sweeps around the corner and down the first hill. Past the Mac “I think I started too far back” “Oh I think I started too far forward” around the lake, over the bridge and up the hill for the first lap passing the bandstand and the volunteers brilliant support. Autumn sun, lake again, keep right, over the bridge and the out and back providing a chance to support and spot friends crossing. Well done, keep going. A special mention for the loudest volunteer support up the final hill I look a bit pained in the last photo and sure it was following the instructions to push on to the end, power up the hill!
So, to the tearoom (as well as every local café- there are lots of us!) and parkrun is all about community. I asked Mary and Helen for final words and they thanked all the wonderful volunteers and summed up the day as “fabulous”. Absolutely.
This week 650 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 55 were first timers and 92 recorded new Personal Bests. Well Done all! Representatives of 54 different clubs took part.
