Castle Park parkrun 14/03/2020 #130

Although we didn't know it at the time, last Saturday's parkrun turned out to be the last for a little while. Until we get through the current difficulties with COVID-19 (Coronavirus) all parkrun's are cancelled. On Saturday the weather was better than it could have been, and certainly better than earlier that morning. In total 307 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 21 were first timers and 43 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 16 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 32 HiViz heros:

Philippa WATSON • Victoria MADDOX • Kevin WATSON • Melanie WATSON • Bryan RUSSELL • Matthew IRONSIDE • Joanne COLEBOURNE • Jane MANSFIELD • Harry MANSFIELD • Claire CADZOW • Patrick CHAPPEL • Sam YOUNG • Rosemary NUGENT • Brian SULLIVAN • Scott NUGENT • Andrew ARNOLD • Clare ARNOLD • Debbi COLLINS • Raulin SURUJBALLY • Jess ARNOLD • Simon JUDKINS • Anthony KIRBY • Paula WALKER • Charlie CARRICK • Andrew MOSTARI • Henry WARD • Darren WILLIAMS • Alfie MCKENZIE • William THOMPSON • Gavin GARDNER • Peter CHRYSOSTOMOU • Luca CHANDLER

Congratulations to Mick Webb who completed his 100th parkrun, and Pauline Tingley who completed her 50th!

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Castle Park parkrun Results Page.

While parkrun is cancelled please keep running, but remember not to try and organise your own group run, and please do not the run parkrun route at 9am on a Saturday, as this will defeat the whole intention of parkrun.

Please be safe, and look after each other and hopefully see you very soon.

Kind Regards,

Kevin

Castle Park parkrun #129

This week we celebrated International Women's Day with 352 people who ran, jogged and walked the course.

We had an all female team of pacers who helped 50 of you record new Personal Bests. that's one in seven of you, hopefully this is a sign of spring and the ground starting to dry out and there will be more to follow (I must make sure I run at the next pacer event as I've RD'd 2 or 3 now!)

We also had 33 first time participants and we hope you enjoyed it and will come back soon.

The event was made possible by the following awesome volunteers:

Sarah MACKAY • Julie WITCHALLS • John ETHERDEN • Melanie WATSON • Jennifer BURKE • Lara WHEELDON • Ellen BROOKS • Graham MULLY • Jane MANSFIELD • Harry MANSFIELD • Denise ALLSOPP • Eleanor RODGERS • Rosemary NUGENT • Francesca PALMER • Helen BRUNTON • Elliott WARRINGTON • Amanda BROWN • Chloe HALLETT • Scott NUGENT • Angie BROCKBANK • Elizabeth PHILLIPS • Joanna JURD • Tory FOOT • Laura MELLING • Kathy DAY • Paul ANDREW • Robin RICKARD • Claire ARNOLD • Alfie MCKENZIE • William THOMPSON • Gavin GARDNER • Peter CHRYSOSTOMOU • Luca CHANDLER

If you can offer to help this week or in a future week please let us know.  I'm handing over to Kevin as who is RD on Saturday.

Details about Castle Park parkrun:

The male record is held by Ian KIMPTON who recorded a time of 15:37 on 7th October 2017 (event number 2).
The female record is held by Annabel GUMMOW who recorded a time of 17:20 on 1st June 2019 (event number 89).
The Age Grade course record is held by Deborah RUSHMAN who recorded 92.16% (19:08) on 30th November 2019 (event number 114).

Castle Park parkrun started on 30th September 2017. Since then 5,665 participants have completed 40,247 parkruns covering a total distance of 201,235 km, including 6,623 new Personal Bests. A total of 648 individuals have volunteered 3,612 times.

Castle Park parkrun #126

So as it turned out, despite some of the more apocalyptic weather forecasts, Storm Dennis stayed away long enough that we went ahead in fairly unremarkable conditions (i.e. windy, drizzly, muddy...). Numbers were always going to be down after last week's record turnout, and with the expectation of bad weather, but we still welcomed 288 participants to Castle Park including 27 first timers. And remarkably 33 recorded personal bests!

The event was made possible by 25 volunteers:

Oliver LAST • Chris CHEW • Matthieu MILITON • Scott CADZOW • Jane MANSFIELD • Harry MANSFIELD • Claire CADZOW • Nicholas YEADON • Scott NUGENT • Neil BERRY • Claire LAYER • Debbi COLLINS • Andrew KAY • Bran RADUKIC • Seamus POWER • Jemimah COLLINS • Andrew WHITTAKER • Paul ANDREW • Linda TAYLOR • Emma MURPHY • Margaret JOHNSTON • Alfie MCKENZIE • William THOMPSON • Gavin GARDNER • Peter CHRYSOSTOMOU

The volunteer roster is looking a bit threadbare for the next few weeks so if you are able to help out it would be much appreciated.

That's all from me this week; Kevin is your RD next week.

Chris.

Castle Park parkrun (Bishop’s Stortford) #125 (overrun by parkrun world tourists today)

One of the most wonderful things about parkrun is that once signed up to parkrun anyone can participate in any parkrun anywhere, including overseas. I love being part of my home parkrun in Finland  but it’s loads of fun to visit new parkruns!

It’s always interesting coming from a small parkrun (in my case Tampere in Finland ) to a much bigger one. I’m not used to crowds, or funnels after passing the finish line or needing a whole host of token scanners (using mobile phones) and token sorters, and it was a real pleasure to experience just how well organised Castle Park parkrun was today!

EE2242AA-A724-4E52-8787-7BB985442866

The weather in England is much warmer than in Finland right now though I’m not sure exchanging snow and ice for grass and mud was an ideal swap for me. Mud, in my experience, is much more slippery than compact snow and I was glad to get round both laps without falling today! We were also jolly lucky to avoid storm Ciara today though it arrived -with expected gusto- later.

A HUGE thank you to Castle Park parkrun for extending your hospitality to approximately a hundred parkrun world tourists today (each of whom have run in at least four different countries) ... CONGRATULATIONS for handling a record attendance (515 participants!) beautifully: the funnel worked really well and the team were very well prepared for a run on the tokens and ingeniously used raffle tickets for those who were placed 501-515. WELL DONE!

B5DA0666-19C3-4DE9-83E9-70D5644F16DD

I’m very mindful that without the local volunteer teams forgoing their own run parkrun, none of us would be able to participate at any parkrun anywhere (no matter how many of us take on support roles - like writing this report)  and it was really wonderful that you were able and willing to accommodate such a large crowd of enthusiastic tourists today.

I travelled up from London with some other tourists and on the way back fellow parkrun world tourist Mark crunched some numbers for me:

Today was Castle Park’s largest attendance! 515 of us made it round the course ...including two from Newcastle who arrived late (because of traffic) but who managed to catch up with the tail walker and record a finish time. Phew!

There were 9 real first timers ... Welcome to the parkrun family! I really hope you enjoyed participating today and a parkrun somewhere will see you again next week!

There were 153 participants who ran Castle Park parkrun for the first time altogether; this included both world tourists, family and friends accompanying world tourists and of course some who chanced upon Castle Park this week.

Together we walked, ran or hop, skipped and jumped around the two laps - all at our own pace and in own preferred style! (Mine isn’t fast or elegant but I love having achieved running the whole 5km, every parkrun a personal victory)

I loved it that so many ran with their dog at Castle Park parkrun, (the run brief was accompanied by exciting barking from every possible point near the bandstand - so much so that I overheard one participant renaming the event as BARK RUN,) and I was gobsmacked at the fast finisher who lapped me pushing a child in a buggy! There were several children participating too ... some of whom covered the 5km (3.1 miles) in very good times (always with a well-behaved adult in tow!). It’s really fantastic how parkrun is getting whole families out exercising on a Saturday morning.

Parkrun wouldn’t be parkrun without cake!

I loved that there was a cafe truck at the parkrun (great idea especially for those volunteers who arrive super early to set up the course) and there was plenty of cake today too: special cookies and cupcakes with the world tourist logo and also cake for someone’s 250th parkrun. Thank you. congratulations too to MARK WILDS who ran his 50th parkrun today and gave each of us a chocolate bar. The curly wurly brought back childhood memories for me.

One of the nice things about parkrun is making new friends.

I only started parkrun (in Finland) two years ago when I started running to combat SAD (seasonal depression) and it’s been a life changer! A few parkrunners at the parkrun today had participated in parkrun in Finland (either at my ‘home’ parkrun of Tampere or my ‘backup’ home parkrun of Tokoinranta (Helsinki) and it was a joy to meet them again today ... thanks for coming to say ‘hello’ and reminding me of your names and where/when we met. Several world tourists helped me celebrate my 60th birthday last November with my Bushy pilgrimage ... and I got to see almost all of you again today too. But I also talked to many new parkrunners today and also made a new friend Mary (from Reading) who saved me from getting lost and chose to run the second lap with me so that I got across the finish line in under 40minutes!  Go us!

Post parkrun we met in the local pub - not for coffee and cake today - but for a full English breakfast before we all headed home, satisfied and very glad we’d made the effort to get up early and participate today!

This report was prepared by Lorna Koskela from Turku Finland.

(One day we will have a parkrun of our own!)

Castle Park Parkrun Event #124

After a chilly, damp start to 2020 it was great to have a sunny morning in Bishop's Stortford for Parkrun this week.

Although still muddy out on the course, the better conditions encouraged over 400 people to take part including 28 first timers.

This week we welcomed tourists from Liverpool, Clitheroe and Ukraine - I hope you all enjoyed your first trip to Castle Park.

In total 406 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 28 were first timers and 56 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 21 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 26 volunteers:

Samantha HOOD • Alcus ERASMUS • Edd HOOD • Philippa WATSON • Matthieu MILITON • Martin MOULTON • Phil MANSFIELD • Patrick CHAPPEL • Wayne GREET • Debbie LE GALLIENNE • Stuart MCCALLUM • Annabel KANE • Alex WARRINGTON • John ZIEPE • Brett LANCASTER • Angie BROCKBANK • Simon DEWHURST • Kathy DAY • Rosie LAUGHLIN • Malcolm DEWHURST • Paul ANDREW • Henry WARD • Rebecca KNIGHT • Alfie MCKENZIE • William THOMPSON • Gavin GARDNER

A special shout out to Sam Hood who not only completed her 50th Parkrun but also brought up her 25th volunteer credit. Oh and I almost forgot to mention she is also seven months pregnant - amazing work Sam!

There were also some other milestones to celebrate this week - well done to Isaac Otomewo and Andrew Kitchen on reaching 50 runs, Anne Hall for getting to 100 and Keith Phillips for completing his 150th!

That's it from me - I'll now hand over to Francesca for next week which is set to be a very special day at Castle Park Parkrun as the World Tourist Group will be joining us!

See you all soon!

Castle Park parkrun, event number 121 11th January 2020

This week the weather was a little kinder and it was wasn't too wet underfoot, although there were the normal muddy bits. This was appreciated by our tourists from Bairnsdale parkrun New South Wales Australia who had their first opporunity to run in mud! We had 478 runners who ventured out this week, very close to our course record. We had 48 first timers and 42 recorded new Personal Bests.

Although we struggled for volunteers at the beginning of the week, we eventually managed to recruit 31 kind individuals who allowed the event to take place. We even managed to get a photographer (Andrew Thomson) this week who produced a great record of the event! Our full list of volunteers were:

Samantha HOOD • Andrea EDWARDS • Kevin WATSON • Melanie WATSON • Bryan RUSSELL • Hollie MATHISON • Andrew THOMSON • Nicholas YEADON • Emma HALFORD • Helen ALMOND • Luke SHEPHERD • Jenny BRAYSHAW • Rosemary NUGENT • Gary SMITH • Paula FRENZEL • Andy HOLLOWAY • Vivienne EMMETT • Graham SMITH • Brett LANCASTER • Mia SMITH • Scott NUGENT • Debbi COLLINS • Kathy DAY • Chris LOVATT • Andrew MOSTARI • Tom CAPEWELL • Samuel CAPEWELL • Becky BANKS • Rebecca KNIGHT • Alfie MCKENZIE • William THOMPSON

Castle Park parkrun Event #120

The New Year always brings a surge of participation at parkrun - all those resolutions to get fitter and be more active! That was true at Castle Park on Saturday when 430 people chose to run, jog or walk 5k with us - our 3rd highest attendance. Across the UK just over 199,000 took part in a parkrun which was a new record.

We gave shout outs to Lara Wheeldon, running her 50th parkrun, and to Ben Pickford, running his 100th.

These events don't happen by magic, they can only go ahead with the help and support of the volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers and tend to rely on the same people each week: why don't you make a New Year's Resolution to help out once in a while? This week's stars were:

Lucinda RHODES • Samantha HOOD • Samantha PICKFORD • Edd HOOD • Mark LAWRENCE • Chris CHEW • Bekah CRANCH • Chris BROLLY • Clare GALLAGHER • Zoë PICKFORD • Christopher CONNELL • Harry MANSFIELD • Mairi MALCOLM • Nicholas YEADON • Denise ALLSOPP • Alison MALCOLM • Martin COLEBOURNE • Emmy PICKFORD • Annabel KANE • Scott NUGENT • Andrew FARMERY • Claire BOYLAN • Kathy DAY • Judith ERICKSEN • Paul ANDREW • Angus EVANS • Keith ADAMS • Ian PALMER

Enjoy the rest of your week and hope to see you again next week, when Kevin will be holding the reins.

Cheers!

Chris.

Castle Park parkrun event #119 – New Year’s Day!

A new year and a new decade welcomed Parkrunners at Castle Park on 1st January.

If it already felt a bit odd having a Parkrun on a Wednesday it was even weirder when the start time was moved to 10.30am to accommodate those doing the Double at Panshanger or Great Notley.

In total 366 people ran, jogged and walked the course, with 30 recording new Personal Bests. Representatives of 16 different clubs took part.

There were also a whopping 71 first timers either giving Parkrun a go for the first time as a New Year's Resolution or tourists keen to try it out.

Of course the event could not have gone ahead without the following 26 hi-viz heroes:

Jon STEADMAN • Samantha HOOD • Kevin WATSON • Hollie MATHISON • Grace CADZOW • Scott CADZOW • Joanne COLEBOURNE • Michelle JOLLEY • Jane MANSFIELD • Phil MANSFIELD • Harry MANSFIELD • Claire CADZOW • Nicholas YEADON • Patricia POOLE • Karen LAMB • Isobel LAMB • David LAMB • Eve WARRINGTON • Angie BROCKBANK • Debbi COLLINS • Simon DEWHURST • Claire BOYLAN • Jenny PENNELL • Seamus POWER • Judith ERICKSEN • Paul ANDREW

Thank you one and all! It was great to welcome so many visitors (including some from Bushy, Exeter, Southampton and Southend) - it is always lovely to hear feedback so please do leave us a review on Facebook if you enjoyed your run!

A huge congratulations to people who achieved milestones on NYD:

50th - Maureen Last, Julia Statham, Linda Burton and Steve Warren

100th - Jason Pite, Dominic Herrington, Harry Mansfield and Thomas Anderson (thanks Thomas for the the cake!)

150th - Paul Schroder

That's it from me - I'll have to wait until Saturday to complete my first run of 2020 when Chris is at the helm.

See you all on the start line!

Simon

Castle Park parkrun event #118

We had 347 people run, jog or walk the course, amazingly 59 of these were first timers and 13 recorded new Personal Bests. We had representatives of 27 different clubs.

We were only able to host this event because of our kind volunteers many of whom gave up their run to allow you guys to run. The 29 volunteers who made today possible were:

Sarah MACKAY • Philippa WATSON • Kevin WATSON • Melanie WATSON • Matthieu MILITON • Scott CADZOW • Jane MANSFIELD • Phil MANSFIELD • Harry MANSFIELD • Amanda EDWARDS • Patrick CHAPPEL • Francesca PALMER • William PALMER • Kevin GILLESPIE • Eve WARRINGTON • Alex WARRINGTON • Graham SMITH • Debbie FERGUSON • Rebecca SMITH • Sophie SMITH • Jan BISSCHOFF • Scott NUGENT • Graeme BOWERMAN • Andrew TURVEY • Claire BOYLAN • Adie HART • Kathy DAY • Paul ANDREW • Fergus SHINNICK

If you would like to help in future weeks then please email castlepark@parkrun.com

Well done Harry Brunt who completed his 50th parkrun today.

Sadly there was an incident today with a member of the public, please can I remind all parkrunners that we do not have priority on the course, and need to be aware of other park users and give way where necessary.

For those who are interested we will be holding a parkrun on New Year's day at the later time of 10.30 am.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the festive period, see you on New Year's day!

Kind Regards

Kevin
