This week 101 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 20 were first timers and 8 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 21 different clubs took part. Terrible conditions meant there was the first significant dip in our numbers since the turn of the year. Notwithstanding the rain and the cold, our tram of volunteers braved the elements and made it possible for those mad enough to turn up to get their weekly parkrun fix. For those who travelled to London and enjoyed the experience of being a tourist at Wimbledon Common, conditions were much more benign, though there certainly was a nip in the air.
Well done to our first finishers, Owen Carleton (17:36 in his first visit to Castlewellan – this was Owen’s 30th parkrun, completed at 24 different venues!) and Ruby McNiff (22:50 and her fifth time as first female finisher) who battled the winds and driving rain.
Massive congratulations to Sean McCashin (see other posts on this page) on completing his 50th parkrun. The vast majority (41) of these were completed at Castlewellan with the odd ‘away day’ thrown into the mix. Sean is a great example of the benefits that can accrue from regular and consistent attendance at parkrun and the positive impact that exercise can have on health and lifestyle. No doubt he, like many others, will be striving to reach 100 in the next year. Well done also to our regular volunteers Lorna Cunningham and Nicola Mathers who completed the London marathon in 3:34 and 3:39 respectively. Good luck to everyone associated with parkrun participating in the Belfast Marathon on Sunday.
We had a number of visitors this week including the Ward family from Bangor, Sue Taylor from Wales and four lads from the Polish Runners Club – Wojciech, Bernard, Rafal and Slawomir who travelled up from Dublin on the morning of the event to take part and add Castlewellan to their ‘have done’ list.
The event was made possible by 19 volunteers, led by RD Danny O'Boyle:
Bill CASH • Danny O'BOYLE • Jerome MCCRICKARD • Monica MCCRICKARD • Rebecca MCCANN • Lauren MCCANN • Michelle GRAHAM • Philomena MORGAN • Justin MORGAN • Robin MITCHELL • Dan MITCHELL • Anne DORAN • Mary GORMAN • Clara ROGAN • Aisling Louise MCCANN • Donal WARD • Robert GRAHAM • David HAWTHORNE • Alan GRANT
A huge thanks, as always, to our volunteers, especially on such an inclement morning when other options including running or staying in bed seemed preferable. However they were stoic in their efforts and were rewarded with a proper soaking! The Prophet demonstrated his status as a new age domesticated man by taking the bibs home, washing them and lovingly folding them up neatly for use next week. The volunteers will smell like summer meadows!!!
