Chelmsford Central parkrun is cancelled on 11 July 2020: COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

News & Run Report for Event #382

As we are all aware, parkruns are officially cancelled up to the end of March, there will be a further review based on Government advice at that time.

You can read the latest news from parkrun at the top of this web page on the red banner.

We have seen a few comments/posts on social media about people getting out and running the parkrun course at 9am on Saturday morning.

As tempting as this would be, parkruns wish is that you do not arrange group gatherings at parkrun venues whilst events are suspended.

There are plenty of other hours in the day when you can run and other places too.
We really don't want outdoor activities being curtailed like other countries.
Running is a low risk activity for the virus and exercise is still encouraged but a collective group activity is not, please be sensible.

You can read a message from Paul Sinton-Hewitt, founder of parkrun HERE

Run Report for Event #382

After last weeks (7th March) enforced absence for the event due to flooding in the park we were glad to put the event on for the 14th March but little did we know then, what was to come.

This week 535 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 28 were first timers and 52 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 38 different clubs took part.
The event was made possible by 42 volunteers:

This is what happened on the day in parkrun world:
"We were delighted to see more than 150,000 women and girls walking, jogging or running at parkruns all over the world and we welcomed an astonishing 15,000 additional women and girls to IWD parkrun.
An inspirational 3,000 female first timers joined us to complete their very first 5k and IWD parkrun saw the biggest number of female volunteers ever recorded at parkrun - an incredible 15,630 women and girls donned the hi-vis and 400 women and girls volunteered for the very first time!"

Run Report for Event #381

Well we might have had Wet Wet Wet in the past but this time it was definitely Mud and having `Tiger Feet` would not of helped much on Saturday as conditions were atrocious but that did not stop 509 of you being `Crazy` enough to enjoy your free timed 5k run, walk and jog around the parks.

WK #381 (576)

WK #381 (6)

A big well done to the 22 first timers who looked out the window in the morning and thought `Oh Boy`(yes 9 weeks at No 1 in 1974) this is going to be fun but still got down for the 8.50 first timers run brief.
Rest assured it`s not normally like this.

With this being a leap year and Saturday falling on the 29th you are going to have to wait another 28 years until 2048 to have this much fun again at Parkrun on the 29th Feb.

There are certain myths and old wives tales about what happens on the 29th Feb but it is actually a day that is added in leap years as a corrective measure to keep our calendar in alignment with the earth`s revolutions around the sun.
Although it makes people do some strange things.

WK #381 (13)

But no matter how wet and cold it was there were still plenty of smiles around to lighten up the morning.

Running Inspiration
We have seen a lot of runners at Chelmsford Central parkrun over the last 7+ years and most have a parkrun story they could tell us about, how they started, where it lead them on their running journey, what parkrun each week means to them. In his own words here is Rob Duncombe story of the effect parkrun has had on his running:

"Having just completed another ultra marathon I wanted to drop a note of thanks to everyone associated with Chelmsford parkrun. In 2015 I completed my first parkrun as preparation for my first marathon in 2016, at the age of 48. Since that first parkrun and marathon my legs have barely stopped moving, and last week I competed in, and finished, one of the toughest races going, a 250km run through the jungles of Costa Rica. (Snakes, crocodiles, 40'C and 80% humidity).
I never in my wildest dreams imagined that in my 50's I'd be running not only marathons but ultra marathons in amazing places.... I really don't believe I'd be doing this if it wasn't for parkrun and the amazing community of runners, volunteers and organisers associated with it... So thank you all... I'm always happy to talk about running, particularly if you are thinking about running a marathon - or that bit further. Do stop me for a chat, I'm usually shouting at a cockerpoo called Dougal and telling him to slow down."

You can see what Rob got up to at Costal Challenge Costa Rica.

VI Runners and Guides
As most of you know, we have a number of Visually Impaired (VI) runners attending each week and one of our regulars recently published an article on Essex Live website about his sight loss which you can read HERE.

Alex Innes is doing a number of events for Charity and there is an interesting one that takes away your sight while you eat a meal. We see the food we are going to eat so we have preconceptions of what it will taste like such as brussel sprouts (everyones favourite!) but try to imagine if you can't see what you are eating, your taste buds need to go into overdrive to work out what it is.
If you are interested you can book a place at A Canteen HERE.

I would like to give credit and thanks to Sue Mapes who is an unsung volunteer who pulls together all of the guides for their runners each weeks and took it upon herself to do this from the first enquiry we had about providing VI guides. Thanks Sue!

International Womens Day
On the 7th March we will be supporting this event.
In England the IWD parkrun celebration is being supported by This Girl Can, a campaign created by our partner Sport England.
Our research shows us that, across the world, women are less likely than men to take part in parkrun. Despite the fact that females make 54% of registrations, they are less likely than men to take part in parkrun and to continue participating. IWD parkrun is a fantastic opportunity to encourage more women and girls to participate in parkrun events all over the world.

Run Report for Event #379

Hot on the weather news this week following Storm Ciara was the impending Storm Dennis!
As we do most weeks, we keep a beady eye on the weather and Storm Dennis was highlighted to be a menace on Saturday!

s3-news-tmp-77017-dennis-and-gnasher_onward_journey_image_bid--2x1--640

Now, Dennis the Menace is a much loved character from the Beano Comics (you can read all about him HERE), those of you born after 1985 will probably have no idea what a comic is!
Comics were the "mobile phones" of the past, they entertained, enthralled, informed, gave us heroes and provided escapism which is pretty much what mobile phones do these days (the first mobile phone call in the UK was made in 1985 by Ernie Wise)!
(You can get it on your phone now!)

A course check Friday night showed no problems although we were hearing of cancellations of local events but mainly the Essex Country Park ones, they do have specific controls about high winds so the rangers closed the parks and unfortunately the parkruns were affected as well.
We have no such restrictions, but of course take your safety as paramount, a further check took place at 7:30am by the set-up team of Curly, Pieface, Rubidium von Screwtop and Toadface McGurty known as the menaces.

29ce35e4cb2ab7f2e8df629767843b421ed7d9e8811d0b88b636b194b766

It was decided to do the Viaduct start/finish as that gave a degree of cover from the predicted high winds and rain.

Dennis wasn't as naughty as he usually is, his wide range of pranks and weaponry in order to cause chaos and mayhem to those around him (you read the Wikipedia link, didn't you!) but the park was relatively calm and in fact rather mild.

I have digressed a bit! This week 734 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 34 were first timers and 35 recorded new Personal Bests.

Here are some reminders on what we need YOU to do each week!
1. If you enter the funnel you need to STAY in it, it doesn't matter that you have forgotten your barcode, it matters that you have been recorded to have finished the run by the Timekeepers, collecting a token at the end of the funnel and dropping it in the bucket.
That way, the stopwatch times match the token number given out and we can provide a clean set of results.
2. There were a lot of Gnashers with their owners today and it is really important that the owners are on short leads as they have a tendency to wander across the path and trip up other park users and runners. Keep the leads tight and close to you.

Please help us to help you have a great run each week and speedy and accurate results!

Dennis will be most happy!
