Run Report for Event# 374

It must be that time of year as you can see from the numbers below that the popularity of Parkrun continues to grow with all the usual suspects experiencing large turnouts.

Biggest UK parkruns: Bushy Park (1663), Southampton (1436), Clapham Common (1310), Tooting Common (1092), Heaton Park (1080), Cardiff (1050), Poole (1000), Finsbury Park (969), Cannon Hill (966), Chelmsford Central(921)

There is the outside chance that word had spread of Paul`s oratory skills looking at the first timers who had ventured down to Central Park for the first time. There were in fact 74 making their first venture into Chelmsford parkrun.

WK #374 (4)

In amongst the throng of 921 runners, walkers and joggers 78 of you achieved a PB.

WK #374 (10)

Whether its chasing that PB, meeting up with or making new friends or just getting out there and giving it a go
Parkrun certainly seems to tick all the boxes.

WK #374 (613) WK #374 (681) WK #374 (400) WK #374 (209)

Well done to all this weeks milestone achievers, especially those brave enough to step out the front.
You can even bring your own trophy.

WK #374 (7)

Once again a big thank you to the 40 volunteers who made this all happen this week.

WK #374 (679)

WK #374 (583)

and here they are.

Gerry MCGOVERN • Paul BROOKES • Anita COCKRELL • Holly CHANDLER • Michael RICHTER • Sarah BOWERMAN • Apryl HAMMETT • Robin Edward MCCOY • David JEFFREY • Robert HALDANE • Christopher BROWN • Sharon HALDANE • Rebecca SMITH • Patrick STURCH • Amelia ADLEM PROBERT • Linda DOSSET • Jeffrey DOSSET • Dc FURY • Alison RAYNER • Elizabeth LAUGHLIN • Henry BELL • Giles ADAMS • Nick MILLS • Paul COCKRELL • Charlie THACKERAY • Judith BROWNE • Lisa DYER • Carole BEESTON • Peta LAGER • Toby HELLEN • Fiona GRIFFITHS • Shirley EMPTAGE • Don COCKRELL • Darren BODDY • Hazel GADSDEN • Nathan MCKEOGH • Anthony KIELY • Amy RASSELL • Laura CHITTENDEN • Angela WOODWARD

With the large numbers that we are getting at the moment there are a number of things you can do to make the volunteers life a little easier.

1. Don't forget your barcode, remember no barcode no time. Please don't put the volunteers in an awkward position by asking.
2.If you don't want a time don't run into the funnel or past the time keepers.
3.Once in the funnel please stay in position and be patient waiting for your token as jumping out of line causes havoc with everyone`s time and position.

These little things will help everything to run smoothly.

WK #374 (529)

WK #374 (564)

Well that's it for this week just a reminder that we turn 7 years old next week so its time to get baking and dust down those fancy dress outfits.

You might be surprised what sort of characters turn up in the park on a Saturday morning.

WK #322(15)

Hot off the Press!

Run Report for Event #373

So with something approaching normality resumed it was Parkrun at 9am on a Saturday morning and with the added bonus of pacer day and whilst not hitting the heights of last week there was still a bumper turnout of 915 runners, joggers and walkers enjoying their free 5k trip around Chelmsford`s parks.

Everyone likes to get back to the old routine.

WK #373 (16)

This week with the hint of new year resolutions in the air we welcomed 73 first timers and the odd dog.

WK #373 (20)

We also had a healthy array of tourists visiting Chelmsford this week although not many travelled as far asTrev and Janine Bowdidge whose home Parkrun is The Entrance poarkrun which is just outside Sydney.

WK #373 (377)

To carry on the Aussie theme a couple of our regular runners had an unplanned meeting in a land down under on the 28th December at Margaret River parkrun, they didn't really know each other but Rob Knight and Ivan Newman recognised that they both ran at Chelmsford Central.
"Margaret River parkrun" is on the other side of Australia to "The Entrance parkrun" about 3,000 miles away by road!
Amazing that two Chelmsford runners were at that particular event on the same day 9,000 miles away from here!!
Parkrun can be a small world sometimes!

IMG_2954[4115]

With such large numbers we rely even more heavily on our volunteers so a big thank you to those who stepped up to the mark this week.

WK #373 (34)

915 is an awful lot of clicking on the stop watch and having eyes in the back of your head also helps.
Luckily Laura and John were more than up to the task.

WK #373 (23)

It also takes a bit of dexterity to hand out that many tokens to keep everyone moving along so a big thank you to Jo and Claire who was on debut at the end of the funnel.

WK #373 (102)

A special mention to Nadine Collins who picked up the stopwatch for the very first time, also to the scanning team Sara Moore, Speranza Holloway, Lucy Roper who also were doing this for the first time with Elizabeth Surrey who stepped in to help out scanning after running. They all did such a great job it made the results processing a doddle.
Thanks so much for volunteering.

The New Year Day run is the only day in the parkrun UK calendar that allows you to do TWO parkruns in ONE DAY. This really is at the largesse of the actual event teams being prepared to do an Event on a Bank Holiday and at different times as they are not obligatory for teams to put on.

It is also an opportunity for a number of runners do "parkrun2parkrun" which in our case is mainly from either Great Notley or Billericay as they are the closest to run between.
Of course, others travel between other events, like Maldon Prom or further afield if they start at 9am.

Who came to Chelmsford after doing a 9am event?
Billericay - 127
Great Notley - 122
Maldon Prom - 69 (150 went to South Woodham Ferrers)
Raphael (Romford) - 2
Burnham on Crouych - 1

In the UK there were 390 (645 usually) parkruns and 158,866 parkrunners.

Biggest UK parkruns: 1. Southampton (1331) 2. Bushy Park (1285) 3. Huddersfield (1008) 4. Chelmsford Central (991) 5. Lee-on-the-Solent (987) 6. Conkers (977), Bournemouth (967) 7. Stretford (962) 8. Scunthorpe (919) 9. Richmond Park (913) 10. Leamington (905)

Run Report for Event #371

This week 672 people ran and jogged the course in grey, damp conditions but that didn't stop you smiling all the way round.

DSC_0328 DSC_0276 DSC_0189

with many people off work this week, it's a good time to travel around being a parkrun tourist and we had 40+ tourists this week including Sabrina Buurmann...

DSC_0362

...whose home parkrun is Aachener Weiher in Cologne which, alphabetically, is the first parkrun worldwide, and one that I thought Chelmsford's own parkrun tourist legend Gary Chandler wouldn't have done but unsurprisingly it is one he's ticked off.

Another tourist who gets a special mention is Joshua Smith, Joshua from Beverley Westwood was a parkrun tourist volunteer, volunteering yesterday and on Christmas Day - thank you Joshua.

Our other Hi-Vis heroes this week were

Alexandria BESSENT • Alison COOK • Amelia ADLEM PROBERT • Andrew VICKERS • Angela DAY • Chris BEAZELEY • Christine RHODES • Christopher BROWN • Clive COXON • Dc FURY • Don COCKRELL • Gavin TILLING • Holly CHANDLER • Jeffrey DOSSET • Joshua SMITH • Laura CHITTENDEN • Lisa DYER • Mary COWL • Matt KNIGHT • Michael RICHTER • Nathan MCKEOGH • Nichola NORMAN • Nigel COCKRELL • Paul BROOKES • Paul MORGAN • Peta LAGER • Rebecca BENTLEY • Rich WALKER • Sandra LEVEY • Sophie SCOTT • Steve CLEAVER • Sue JOHNSON • Sue TATTERSALL

Here is Robert Salmon who completed his 50th Milestone this week, well done.

Finally, you've only got 3 days to wait until the next opportunity to run a free, timed 5k parkrun, and it's the time every year that there's the opportunity to run two parkruns on the same day and do the 'double'. To facilitate this our neighbouring parkruns at Great Notley, Billericay and Maldon are starting at 9am and Chelmsford Central parkrun will be starting at 10.30am. If you're doing the double please travel safely between events.

Gerry will be looking after you on New Year's Day.

See you on Wednesday.

Run Report for Event #370 (Christmas Day)

Having to cancel last Saturdays event due to the flooding in Admirals Park, our extra event on Christmas Day was greeted with blue skies and sunshine.

WK #370 (3)

Perfect running conditions and even the last of the flood waters had dispersed off the path, there was just a little mud to deal with!

I opened the run brief by talking about Mandy (you can read a tribute HERE) thank you all for the warm applause in appreciation of Mandy's life and her involvement in parkrun.

Mandy Coxon

It is with deepest sadness that we have to report the passing of Mandy.

Mandy had been battling cancer and regretfully, it finally caught up with her, she passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning 17th December.

Those of you who have been with us over the last four years will have at some point come across Mandy either through her email communication with you for volunteering or on the day of the event covering a multitude of volunteering roles.

wk #133 (21)

She has been an absolute stalwart of the core team for the last few years, forever smiling and sharing her infectious and happy demeanour with us and all parkrunners that crossed her path.
Mandy did a lot behind the scenes during the week and on each parkrunday to make the event happen for the enjoyment of others.

WK #235 (224)

Mandy started her parkrun journey in June 2015 with her first volunteering role and had completed 178 volunteer events covering 269 different tasks.
She had only completed 4 actual parkruns, with the last being on the 19th October, when she wanted to actually do the course and it was partly in a wheelchair assisted by Alan and Sam Chambers, this was unbeknown to her husband Clive who was away at the time.

WK #361 (101)

She showed incredible spirit and determination to walk across the finish line.

WK #361 (631)

Mandy absolutely loved coming to parkrun each week and made so many new friends and I know they will be deeply saddened of the loss of a dear friend to them and parkrun. Parkrun is too many of us, not just a run in the park for an hour on a Saturday morning. It means many things to many different people and however you take part we hope it enriches your life as it did for Mandy.

Our very deepest condolences to Clive who has lost a wife and companion of over 30 years and all her family and friends.

We will be taking a few moments at Saturdays run to remember Mandy with an applause, we hope you will join us in this.
If you have a "purple" 25 tee, please wear it in recognition of Mandy and it was a favourite colour of hers.

The parkrun core team.

Run Report for Event #369

This week Chelmsford parkrun could best be described as wet and soggy but that didn't stop 523 people running, jogging and walking the course, of whom 13 were first timers and 28 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 45 different clubs took part.

IMG_20191214_120414

WK #369 (9)

The event was made possible by 36 volunteers without whom this event would not be possible:

Geoffrey John FARROW • Ann THOMAS • Gerry MCGOVERN • Paul BROOKES • Clare CHANDLER • Holly CHANDLER • Michael RICHTER • Damian BARRETT • John MCCAYNA • David JEFFREY • Matt COUGHLAN • Robert HALDANE • Sharon HALDANE • Rebecca SMITH • Nichola NORMAN • Nigel COCKRELL • David COCKRELL • Patrick STURCH • Rich WALKER • Amelia ADLEM PROBERT • Linda DOSSET • Jeffrey DOSSET • Alison RAYNER • Elizabeth LAUGHLIN • John SPILLANE • Susan HEWING • Lisa DYER • Peta LAGER • Caroline DUNNING • Iain ROE • Don COCKRELL • Nathan MCKEOGH • Harry CANNON • Amy RASSELL • Laura CHITTENDEN • Christine RHODES

WK #369 (3)

Just a little reminder that if you run with a dog you need to have it on a short lead, if you do this you have more control and your dog is less likely to cause disruption to our other lovely parkrunners!

WK #369 (260)

On Saturday we have a festive treat for you! Some of our regular parkrunners, who when not wearing lycra, dabble with brass instruments, will be playing Christmas carols before and during the run. They are raising money for the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity, based in Hatfield Peverel- for whom one of the musicians David Howell, is running the London Marathon in April.

Helen Rollason Cancer Charity is dedicated to supporting people whose lives are touched by cancer. Their support centres in Essex, London and Hertfordshire are vital in helping people living with cancer. Founded in 1999, the charity is the legacy of BBC broadcaster and sports woman Helen Rollason, whose vision was: “Good quality of life while coping with cancer is the most important gift a sick person can receive. It should be available to everyone.” Providing support for cancer patients’ emotional well-being alongside their medical treatment continues to be at the core of the charity’s mission.

We know that runners don't carry cash, so donations can be made direct to David's fundraising page: www.justgiving.com/davidruns2020

Gerry will be full of festive fun this Saturday and on Christmas Day - who will be joining us?

See you Saturday

Run Report for Event #368

This week 618 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 10 were first timers and 77 recorded new Personal Bests, including one of you recording Chelmsford Central parkrun's 27,000th personal best. We were back to our normal start and finish although it was still slippy underfoot which makes the personal bests even more impressive.

WK #368 Jack BallJPG (9) WK #368 Neil Churchill (113) WK #368 Jack BallJPG (300) WK #368 Jack BallJPG (524)

But parkrun is much more than about personal bests especially when you've got your own supporter posse to cheer you on

WK #368 Neil Churchill (69) WK #368 Jack BallJPG (60)
Massive thanks to all of you volunteering well ahead of the run it certainly makes life easier for the core team. Please email in if you can volunteer over the Christmas period as some of our regular volunteers are away and we're running 4 parkruns over 11 days so plenty of volunteer slots to fill.

WK #368 Neil Churchill (9)

The pacers are constantly checking the time to make sure their pace is spot on..

WK #368 Neil Churchill (154)

...and then spend 30 seconds bouncing about by the finish hoping we don't notice, 23 mins next month for you Mr Barr!!

WK #368 Neil Churchill (160)

Run Report for Event #367

Crumbs! Well done to the 583 hardy runners who felt the knead to leave their comparatively oven-like homes on a cold and frosty morning.
WK #367 (18)Central Park had all the ingredients of a beautiful cake with a dusting of icing sugar sprinkled over it. WK #367 (3)
The ‘usual’ start retained a rather soggy bottom, for the third week in a row, and it was decided that, rather than getting caked in mud, the viaduct start was the place to bake it happen. After all, we all loaf a viaduct start/finish!
WK #367 (26)
The runners gave it all or muffin and negotiated some icy stretches.
WK #367 (37)
The set up team had likened 'Death Valley' to a meringue, an icy crust with a soft centre.
WK #367 (38)
30 show stopping volunteers gave up their early morning to provide the perfect mix of a sprinkle of direction and a huge dollop encouragement. A big thank you to:

Gerry MCGOVERN • Jackie STRETTON • Paul BROOKES • Holly CHANDLER • Michael RICHTER • Jon SPRULES • David JEFFREY • Sharon HALDANE • Rebecca SMITH • Sue ARMSTRONG • Nichola NORMAN • Nigel COCKRELL • Matthew WILLIAMS • Susan HAMPSHIRE • Anne MACLEOD • Malcolm MACLEOD • Rich WALKER • Amelia ADLEM PROBERT • Jeffrey DOSSET • Neil CHURCHILL • Sue MAPES • Clive COXON • Gavin TILLING • Carole BEESTON • Toby HELLEN • Don COCKRELL • Nathan MCKEOGH • Amy RASSELL • Laura CHITTENDEN • Christine RHODES

By the end, clouds of steam were rising from exhausted finishers all, no doubt, filling more toastie and cooked than when they began.
WK #367 (145)
The results were double chocced and 44 of you achieved a pb!

You are all in for a treat next week when Paul - more Cobbler than Hollywood - is Run Director!

Donut forget your barcode!

Run Report for Event #366

Wet Wet Wet , no not the soft rock band from the 80`s but the course conditions for event no 366 at Chelmsford Central.

WK #366 (21)

WK #366 (18)

It might of been a bit heavy going in places but that did not seem to stop everyone enjoying their free 5K  jaunt around the parks to get the weekend off to the perfect start.

WK #366 (513)

parkrun "Love is all around"

Country wide there were 11,266 new Parkrunners and we were joined by 22 first timers who got their first taste of the friendly atmosphere to be found in Central Park every Saturday morning.

A lot of that is down to our volunteers who week in week out make this event so enjoyable for everyone .

WK #366 (3)

WK #366 (15)

Although maybe it took a bit of time to get the balloons out of the front door in time to make the run brief.

WK #366 (493)

Also well done to the 20 of you who notched a PB on a very soggy course including Max Jones who skipped round in an impressive 16m 14s
