Mandy Coxon

It is with deepest sadness that we have to report the passing of Mandy.

Mandy had been battling cancer and regretfully, it finally caught up with her, she passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning 17th December.

Those of you who have been with us over the last four years will have at some point come across Mandy either through her email communication with you for volunteering or on the day of the event covering a multitude of volunteering roles.

wk #133 (21)

She has been an absolute stalwart of the core team for the last few years, forever smiling and sharing her infectious and happy demeanour with us and all parkrunners that crossed her path.
Mandy did a lot behind the scenes during the week and on each parkrunday to make the event happen for the enjoyment of others.

WK #235 (224)

Mandy started her parkrun journey in June 2015 with her first volunteering role and had completed 178 volunteer events covering 269 different tasks.
She had only completed 4 actual parkruns, with the last being on the 19th October, when she wanted to actually do the course and it was partly in a wheelchair assisted by Alan and Sam Chambers, this was unbeknown to her husband Clive who was away at the time.

WK #361 (101)

She showed incredible spirit and determination to walk across the finish line.

WK #361 (631)

Mandy absolutely loved coming to parkrun each week and made so many new friends and I know they will be deeply saddened of the loss of a dear friend to them and parkrun. Parkrun is too many of us, not just a run in the park for an hour on a Saturday morning. It means many things to many different people and however you take part we hope it enriches your life as it did for Mandy.

Our very deepest condolences to Clive who has lost a wife and companion of over 30 years and all her family and friends.

We will be taking a few moments at Saturdays run to remember Mandy with an applause, we hope you will join us in this.
If you have a "purple" 25 tee, please wear it in recognition of Mandy and it was a favourite colour of hers.

15 years of parkrun

This week parkrun celebrates the 15th birthday from when it started, you can read all about the beginnings HERE and if you want to know more about how Chelmsford parkrun fits in with the history of parkrun you can read our parkrun profile HERE

To celebrate the 15 years on Saturday, it would be fantastic to see everyone that has one, to wear a milestone tee or an apricot one.

An arbitrary milestone for Event #328

For those of you that love a good stat, we have an arbitrary milestone coming up this week.

If we get 690 runners (more than likely!) we will have achieved the milestone of 150,000 5k runs since the event started in 2013.

Collectively that’s 750,000kms run, that’s a heck of a lot of trainers pounding the parks! No wonder it had to be re-tarmacked!

The equatorial circumference of Earth is about 40,075kms and we have been around it more than eighteen times!
You have even nearly been to the moon and back as its about 384,400kms to get there!

In our usual fashion of celebrating anything we will give a momento to the person who finishes in 690th position on Saturday.

Last week that was about a 35 min finish time.

This graph shows how many runners each year we have had at this event each year since 2013.

Billericay & #chasethepacer day 3rd November 2018

This week is the return of our very popular #chasethepacerday and this coincides with one of our nearest neighbours not having an event on due to Fireworks in their park.
Therefore, we are expecting a number of Billericay parkrunners to visit our event for their parkrun fix.

Billericay parkrun core team have twinned themselves with Barry Island parkrun with a fantastic connection for the classic tv comedy "Gavin & Stacey".
They are visiting Barry Island parkrun on Saturday and we would wish them a safe trip and a great parkrun.

To celebrate their trip we are giving away a boxed set of all episodes of "Gavin & Stacey", you can only see these repeated on Amazon Prime or Netflix at the moment so well worth winning!
Last week Billericay had 276 finishers, whovever finishes in 277th place on Saturday will be given this box set as a prize. Based on last weeks results at Chelmsford that would be around a finish time of 26:35.......Our 26 & 27 min pacers should be popular!!

Co-op Food visit to parkrun.

At Co-op, we do things a little differently. We operate over 2,500 stores across the UK and are one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives – owned by millions of members. We exist to meet members’ needs and stand up for the things they believe in. A partnership with parkrun was a natural development for Co-op, as our brands enjoy a lot of synergy. Both parkrun and Co-op are avid supporters of the local community and we share many values in relation to our communities and also around the importance of good quality, ethically sourced healthy food.

The parkrun code and guidelines.

Please take time to read the parkrun code. All of these are important and help you to help us to give you a free, weekly, timed, 5k run.

Getting on with your neighbours.

Some of our neighbours have complained about the parking on a Saturday morning around the Virgin Active area, it is important that we get on with our neighbours and cause the least disruption to their Saturday mornings as possible.

We would remind you to park responsibly and respect others property if you have to drive to the event, there are plenty of car parks in the town.

Above all, we would encourage you to walk, jog, run, cycle or bus to the event. Do it the healthy way, after all that's why you are attending parkrun?

We hold the event in Central park so that it is easy for people in the city to get to.

Your cooperation is much appreciated.
