Run Report for Event #117

This week we were joined by 341 runners, of whom 26 were first timers - welcome to Chelmsford Central parkrun, we hope you enjoyed your run and look forward to you joining us again in the future!

Course conditions were good, so good that 57 of you achieved PBs, well done to you all.

Ok, last week a note about 'funnel duckers' and 'double crossers' this week a little reminder about cyclists and parkrun... with the growing number of runners and due to health & safety reasons we are unable to allow cyclists to follow/keep up with runners during the event. This includes children on bikes who may be accompanying adults who are running. You will need to make alternative arrangements in this instance. The paths are narrow in parts and bikes weaving in and out ot the runners pose a risk at the best of times, without them trying to follow a runner. We do appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Ok, so back to this week event:

Run Report for Event #116

Well, thats another event done and dusted! Event #116 to be precise!

This week there were 386 runners, of whom 33 were first timers - welcome to all our first timers, we hope you had a good run with us!

We again managed to start exactly at 9am, so thank you for your co-operation in remaining quiet during the run brief and gathering at the start line on the right side of the cones!! Also, great job on avoiding the daffodils ;) the City Council, will be most pleased :)

Conditions were good, albeit unexpectedly chilly! Despite that, 82 recorded new Personal Bests - so well done to you!

We suspect we may have had either some 'funnel duckers' or 'double crossers' this week! Please only cross the finish line once and when you cross the line, please do take a finish token. Each click of the stopwatch corresponds to a finish position token number, so if you want an accurate time, you will need to abide by this rule. Otherwise all the positions and times after you will be out should you either duck out of the tunnel or cross the finish twice and not take a token! Oh and don't forget your barcode ;)

Apryl Hammett

Apryl Hammett is one of our regular runners here at Chelmsford Central parkrun. Read on to find out a little more about her and what parkrun and running means to her...

Name: Apryl Hammett

Club: Unattached

Age: 42

Occupation: Children's Librarian

Number of runs: 46

Favourite volunteer role:
Cheering people on. I love the fact that at parkrun even if you are not volunteering you can still support people when you have finished. You don’t have to get in the long queue to get your barcode scanned, you can go and cheer people in! Also I love pacing people. It’s great to see people achieve their goals.

What do you like about park run:
It’s a community full of lovely people. Everyone is really friendly and there is always someone to talk to even if you are on your own. It is inclusive and everybody can join in regardless of your age or your ability. It is absolutely wonderful..

Most memorable parkrun moment:
My most memorable parkrun was when my daughter ran for the first time. She was so nervous and worried. She met Chris and Anna and they ran with her supporting her all the way round. (Including doing aeroplanes down the hill!) She had cheers from Simon Oswald and Trevor Millard and she hasn’t stopped coming since. She said that it was her own ‘pacing team’

Do you run naked or with tech? - why?
At parkrun I have started running without a watch (Obviously when I am not pacing!) Amazingly the freedom of not looking at your watch has done wonders for me and my times have started to improve. Long may it continue!

What is your running ambition?
To carry on running for as long as I am able I have had a really good ‘running year’ throughout 2014. I have been able to really enjoy running, as opposed to focusing on times and races.

What's your favourite run?
Probably the Writtle Run – I live in central Chelmsford, so I go through town, and Bell Meadow, through Central park and then out to Writtle, over to Hylands Park, past the House and over the A414. Up the unmade road to Galleywood and home via Army and Navy. It really makes me appreciate the beauty of Chelmsford and nature throughout the changing seasons.

Thank you Apryl for sharing and supporting, and, of course, for being part of Chelmsford Central parkrun! As always, you have been AMAZING!

Run Report for Event #97

This week 358 of you braved the wet and muddy conditions and we welcomed 29 first timers to Chelmsford Central parkrun! I think for the first time we did have some rain during the run, but this quickly cleared up!

Course conditions were wet and muddy, so much so, we had to make a small course alteration just outside of death valley.

Despite the conditions 56 of you recorded PBs this week so well done to you!

Our new PA equipment made it's debut this week and I had to really restrain myself from bursting into song - even despite a challenge that had been laid down by fellow core team member Simon - maybe next time ;) We hope you will all now be able to hear us loud and clear during the run brief and remain quiet during this and the health and safety announcements!

We had a few certificates to give out this week and a special mention to Liz Davies who picked up her club 50 certificate, but not only that went on to be the first lady in the Chelmsford 10k the following day and take the County Championship! She also qualified for the Essex Team in the Essex League cross-county, representing Essex in Southern inter-counties (I hope I got that right!)!!! Well done to you Liz, a fantastic achievement, what an inspiration you are to us all.

We had a number of parkrunners join in with the 'bring your bling week' and it was lovely to see everyones achievements outside of parkrun - thanks to everyone who took part!

Paul WYATT (VM40-44) of Havering Athletic Club, was first over the line in 17:49 - second time in 7 appearances.

Run Report for Event #96

Event #96 only 3 more to go until our 100!! Hard to believe that in that time we have seen 3,771 different runners take part in our event, that have totalled a whooping 124,275km in a total of 24,855 runs!!

Anyway, moving on to this weeks event... we saw 367 runners cross the finish line, 22 of which were first timers!

Our one and only tourist (or the only person who raised their hand when asked!) was the Event Director from Southend parkrun, Alex Thornton, a big thank you for making him feel welcome as well as all our first timers. We hope you enjoyed your run with us!

We also had some of the Brentwood parkrun core team join us this week, to do some training and learn new skills. So a big thanks to them for filling some of our key volunteer roles.

We had one runner join our 50 club this week and that was none other than one of our juniors, Katie Brazier! She ran her first run with us back at event #4 and was one of our first junior runners to participate here at Chelmsford Central. What an achievement Katie, and welcome to club 50.

We reverted back to route A this week, so we saw the return of the 'hill' out at Admirals Park. Course conditions in general were good, although it was quite muddy in death valley and the other grassy areas of the course. This didn't stop 66 of you recording PBs this week - well done to you all.

Run Report for Event #86

Event #86, chase the pacer week!! Another glorious morning here at Chelmsford Central parkrun, where we were joined by 387 of you. We used our primary route and other than it being slightly slippery on the grassy areas the course conditions were good.

We welcomed 46 first timers to our community, and whilst I forgot to give them a shout-out in the run brief (note to self!), I am sure our regular runners and rest of our community made them feel very welcome :)

I also forgot to welcome any tourists and give anybody doing their 50th run a mention!! We hope you enjoyed your run with us and well done to those completing their 50th run! Also, noted for this week! You just cannot get the staff ;)

So, tree cutting vans! Who would have thought they would just appear and park themselves on the route just as I said '3-2-1 GO'! Certainly not I! Anyway, thanks to quick thinking volunteer Paul and his daughter who hot footed it over there and expertly marshalled all our runners safely around both vehicles, we adverted any crisis! Our events really would not be possible without our volunteers!

Which leads me on to the narrow metal bridge... Now I know that you lot are all lovely people, but when you are in a pack of runners hurtling through the park, you can actually, unintentionally, be quite intimidating and daunting to other park users. Especially at this point, we are asking you to cross the bridge in single file, keeping to the left and if you need to give way or stop, then please do, there is always another run and another PB. We have no priority over other park users and if other park users do stop for the runners, then please show them some love. If there are angry words, please just smile and thank them. We would not want to be in a position whereby the Council are receiving complaints and we are no longer able to put on the event. We ask for your understanding and cooperation in this area :)

So our pacers, helped 98 of you achieve PBs this week, so well done to you and massive thanks to our pacers!

Pacers and their times:
Gary CHANDLER - 17:42
Ken HOYE - 18:47
Robert Andrew MILLS - 19:50

Mark CALLAN - 22:43
Stuart HARKNETT - 23:47
Claire SPLARN - 24:49
Apryl HAMMETT - 26:47
Anna LUFF - 27:49
Christine CALLAN - 28:44
Therese BRABANT - 30:02

Massive shout out to our volunteers! Pip who doubled up as marshall and funnel manager, Anthony who was not my volunteer gone AWOL just the one I'd sent out to Admirals with Christopher! Heidi and Rob Mills, for doubling up by taking photos as well as timekeeping and pacing. Janet, Apryl, Chris and Simon who expertly assisted pre-event. My scanning team Janet, Michael and Daisy, all the remaining marshal's Clementina, Gordon, Hilda, Holly, Lizzie, timekeeper Michael, finish tokens by Paul and his daughter, and my post event support crew Matt, Chris, Anna, Janet, Simon and Nikki. Lastly, and by no means least our tailrunner Darren - I hope I have captured everyone!! Thank you for helping the event run smoothly!

Did you know that we have volunteer slots that will also enable you to run? If you run sub 22 then you can barcode scan, be our scanning manager or funnel manager. We also have pre and post event set-up volunteer opportunities which will also allow you to volunteer and run, and of course there is also chase the pacer each month! If any of our volunteer roles sound appealing, which obviously they do ;), then please drop us an email at chelmsfordcentralhelpers@parkrun.com we would love to hear from you and get you on the roster!

Here are some of Derek's stats and a 60 second interview about him, running and parkrun...

Name: Derek Banks

Club: Unattached

Age: 39

Number of runs: 13

Occupation:
Investment Banker

Favourite volunteer role:
I am yet to volunteer as I am currently focusing on breaking the 30min barrier! However both my wife and son enjoyed the volunteering experience particularly the marshalling. All the volunteers do a tremendous job which help manage the event so successfully.

What is your motivation to run:
Weight loss is my motivation. My plan for 2014 was to lose 40 pounds before my 40th birthday! So far since March I have lost 42 pounds!! A whopping 3 stone!! I ran the London Marathon in my 30th year and am planning to run in my 40th year.

How has parkrun changed your running:
I look forward to Parkrun every weekend with my focus on my times and fitness. I am desperate to break 30 mins and look forward to receiving my emails on Saturday post the run to see if my times have improved. Parkrun provides me with the motivation and desire to run and not stop! A competitive race in a great atmosphere.

What do you like about parkrun:
I love the atmosphere every Saturday morning and the support from everyone. I particularly like the support on the final lap from the other runners who have already finished and the support that they give.

Most memorable or funniest parkrun moment:
I do a sprint finish every week which is a highlight for me! Always look forward to the photos which my wife then likes to blast on social media to the amusement of my friends and family!

Do you run naked or with tech? - why?
Strictly a naked runner! No tech for me…I just focus on the person in front of me and try to keep up!

What is your favourite running ‘fuel’:
Water for me…not a fan of all these Sports drinks! The old Del would have a bacon roll after the race..however the new slimline Del has a banana!

Where have you been a parkrun tourist?
Not yet been a tourist! Have been advised that Notley has a big hill!!

Have you/ do you run barefoot - why?
I am definitely no Zola Budd...shoes and socks for me.

What's your running ambition?
My short term ambition is to break 30mins...however I want to complete the London Marathon in my 40th year

If you had a running playlist, what would it look like:
Bubbles...as I am a massive West Ham fan!!

Thank you Derek for sharing and supporting, and, of course, for being part of Chelmsford Central parkrun! As always, you have been AMAZING!
