Run Report for Event #77

This week we saw 299 runners join us for our 'Tour de France' event, braving the damp conditions. It was lovely seeing so many of you joining in with our 'wear something yellow' theme, with one of our regular volunteers, Sharon Haldane, taking the cover photo slot this week sporting her 'Tour de France' t-shirt! We even had our very own tour makers, Gerry and Tracy !

This week we also had a new runner who completed the course and raised £500 for the Bobby Moore Trust - unfortunately I have no further details, but if it was you, then please do write in so we can share your success! (Looking at the photos I believe it was Glen Smith - so well done to you!)

Also joining us this week was Richard Hammer from Basingstoke. Richard completed his 200th run with us on Saturday - thank you for choosing Chelmsford Central parkrun for this momentous occasion!

So, chase the pacer week! Always such a buzz after this event, seeing people achieve PBs - well done to everyone :). Although all our pacers deserve a shout out, our 20min pacer, Darren and 36min pacer, Chris, both went back out having completed the course in their chosen time, to help bring others in - Chris went back out twice! Such a great community spirit with everyone wanting everyone else to do well. So, not only to all our pacers, our runners and our volunteers - Thank you for contributing to the success of our weekly events and in helping build the community here at Chelmsford Central parkrun.

Pacers and their times:
Darren Sutton - 20 min pacer - 19:47
Paul Anderson - 21 min pacer - 20:48
Emily Smith - 22 min pacer - 21:52
Damian Barrett - 24 min pacer - 24:08
Claire Splarn - 26 min pacer - 26:05
Apryl Hammett - 28 min pacer - 27:55
Mark Davies - 30 min pacer - 29:49
Trevor Millard - 32 min pacer - 31:56
Simon Oswald - 33 min pacer - 32:56
Chris Pro - 36 min pacer - Chris did not cross the finish line as he went back out, he did however finish in just under 36 mins - so technically we actually had 300 runners!

Run Report for Event #63

The sun continues to shine here at Chelmsford Central parkrun, meaning excellent PB conditions! Some great PB's at that AND a news Ladies course record!! LIZ DAVIES broke her previous course record knocking 13 seconds off, what an outstanding effort from Liz - well done to you!

A further 109 PBs were achieved this morning, including a remarkable 20:45 from junior Ryan Splarn - top effort from everyone!

A touch of parkrun royalty at this weeks event. We were joined by Paul Sinton-Hewitt, parkrun founder and his wife Jo Sinton-Hewitt. Paul started parkun in 2004 with just 13 runners in Bushy Park, Teddington. Since then, the Bushy parkrun has become a well established running event; open to everyone who happen to be near a parkrun venue on Saturday morning. Events now take place every week in Australia, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.

So for those of you who are interested in some stats, as a few of us are over here at Chelmsford Central HQ, here are a few interesting figures (courtesy of parkrun & wikipedia)

Global participation first exceeded 10,000 in April 2011 and 20,000 in August 2012. Neither participation nor event numbers show any sign of slowing with global participation first exceeding 30,000 in April 2013 (225 events), 40,000 in August 2013 (282 events), 50,000 in November 2013 (317 events) and 60,000 in January 2014 (340 events).

As at 31st December 2013, there were over 760,000 registered parkrunners across 10 countries. Just over 332,000 individuals did their first run with parkrun in 2013, taking the total number of individuals who have ever run with parkrun to 663,900. Just over 1.95 million runs were recorded in 2013 taking the total number of runs since it started in 2004 to 3.92 million runs. Making all this possible were the contributions of 42,800 unique volunteers who volunteered in excess of 180,000 times across 362 events or locations while delivering 14,015 events during the year. 153 new events were added in 2013.

As Garry Smith, one of regular runners, tweeted (@garrygen) 'what a awesome thing he has started' awesome is, perhaps, an understatement!

We were also joined by Paul Graham, founder of Junior parkrun, also at Bushy Park. They had come along to talk to myself and Gerry about the proposed Chelmsford Central Juniors parkrun, that we are hoping to launch early May. We welcomed them in true Chelmsford Central parkrun style as they joined the other 352 of you who ran the course. We received some great feedback on the course and the atmosphere, so thank you to all our runners and supporters for creating such a wonderful community to be a part of and making everyone feel welcome.

We also had one of regular runners and newest member of the core team, Simon Oswald, undertake his 50th parkrun. Well done to Simon! We are going to see our club 50 grow as the year progresses, meaning it wont be long until we welcome our first 'homegrown' club 100 runner!

Also worth a mention, Tim Woulfe, Tim ran the course in 17:25 mins and then jumped straight on to volunteer to scan barcodes! It has been lovely to see the last couple of weeks families sat down in the Cafe sorting tokens together! If you would like to volunteer, do drop us a line at chelmsfordcentralhelpers@parkrun.com Thank you to all our volunteers, without whom our events would not be possible! Run Report for Event #62

So, in true parkrun weather tradition we had a lovely sunny morning this week. 360 of you took advantage of the glorious sunshine and joined us this week. As the weather had been kind we were able to use our 'usual' route, and the course conditions were good.

We kicked off the proceedings with awarding Aurav KANYAL with his club 10 certificate. Aurav has done so well, as have all of youngsters, with his progress over the last 10 weeks, knocking almost 5mins off his time. Well done to you!

It is always lovely to see so many families join us and this week, and perhaps for the first time, we were joined by 3 generations from one family - so a shout out to the McCann family.

We had a number of tourists this week from Valentines park, Pontefract (these can be seen pictured below giving us 'the bolt'). Not forgetting also our special vistor from Porth Cawl, in South Wales (big up the Welsh massive ;)) Brain Rule who joined us on his 80th birthday to run the course with his son Richard (one of our regular runners). We showed him some Chelmsford parkrun love with 3 cheers for him on his special day, from all 360+ in attendance. We hope you enjoyed your time with us Brian and had a fabulous birthday - who wouldn't want to start their birthday with a parkrun ;)

'Penblwydd hapus i chi, Penblwydd hapus i chi, Penblwydd hapus i Brian, Penblwydd hapus i chi'

So who knew that shoes grew on trees? A rather fascinating sight on Saturday, on the tree as you turn off to the finishers funnel... pairs of shoes hanging from the branches! I bet they weren't Asics, Saucony or Brookes! ;)

Run Report for Event #53

September 29th 2012, 5 random strangers met in Admirals park for a 5k run...

This is how Chelmsford Central parkrun story begins. Just 4 weeks later the funding had been agreed and it was all systems go for getting Chelmsford Central parkrun in action. By the end of that year, our launch date had been agreed, training was complete and our test run arranged. We had no idea how many people we would have turn up! January 19th 2013 event #1 we welcomed 82 runners.

Event #1 - who remembers the snow?

Fast forward one year and we had an amazing 409 runners join us for the anniversary event! WOW! We are grateful to each and every one of you for supporting us here at Chelmsford Central parkrun; it has grown to be such an amazing community.

Now, we don't normally touch on what goes on behind the scenes, this week I am making an exception. We say each week that without not only our runners but our volunteers that parkrun would not be possible. This week that is especially true! Early hours of Saturday morning (2am ish) Gerry, discovered that Admirals park was flooded, almost knee high! He worked through the night measuring a new route in order for the anniversary event to go ahead. It is at this point I want to echo the sentiments expressed on Saturday... without his commitment and dedication we wouldn't be where we are today. I know he will be the first one to say 'it's not about us and what we do, it's about the runners and the community', and he's right! Only this week, had he not stayed up all night, we wouldn't have had an anniversary event. So, Gerry, it is a real pleasure being part of your team. Thank you for everything you do - we salute you!

Gerry McGovern, Event Director, Chief and unsung hero!

If anyone would like to order a copy of the photo book that we presented Gerry with, you can do so here

Right, now on to this weeks event, event #53, our first anniversary event. The build-up was incredible, and we were blown away with the amount of volunteers and it was lovely to see everyone getting into the spirit with their fancy dress and of course the CAKE!!

We had superheroes, nuns, 118 118, thing 1 & thing 2, popeye, cruella devil, a smurf and, of course, a horse all participating this morning - it truly was a magnificent sight!

We were joined by Antony Bensley from Chelmsford City Council, Counsellor Ride (cabinet member for leisure and culture) and the Essex Chronicle. The awards presentation took place with Gerry and the rest of the core team giving out prizes to 15 runners, these are set out below.

So, to Anna Luff, who I understand masterminded the operation and also to Simon AKA professor parkrun, Sharon Bannister, Liz Irvine, Andy Hind, Nicky Hind, Cake at the Lake and to everyone who contributed - thank you we are all really grateful.

Today it was a 2 lap course. Conditions were dry, although, the grassy areas were muddy and slippery in places.

Gerry mentioned that all those who ran or volunteered would be entered into a prize draw for a running workshop. If your name does not appear on the results table, we are unable to include you in this. Please do get in touch if you did run and you are not showing on the results AND you would like to be entered into the prize draw. More details of the prize can be found here

This weeks volunteer roles were slightly more challenging, not only due to the number of runners, also because of the 2 lap course and the concentration of runners in a smaller area. I'm sure you'll agree that they all did an AMAZING job. Our volunteer shout outs go to: Amanda WATT, Ann NORRIS, Christian RAY, Clare CHANDLER, Danielle WILD , Darren FAZACKERLEY, Gordon HADDOW, Holly CHANDLER, John David HOSKYN, Kalli ISBORNE, Karen Laura BUTTRESS, Mark RAWLINSON, Maureen WILSON, Paul BROOKES, Rebecca MARTEN, Sarah ORLEY, Sharon HALDANE, Stephen EASLEY, Sue M SMITH and Toni TUNMER - Thank you!!

With that all that is left to say is that here is to another OUTSTANDING year, it has been an incredible journey to date here at Chelmsford Central parkrun HQ and we thank all 2,132 runners that have participated to date. Let's continue to build on the successes that we have already seen. I speak on behalf of the core team, Gerry, Len, Tracy, Matt, myself and Chris - it has been a pleasure and you have been AWESOME!

Run Report for Event #42

Despite the threat of rain this week we had 262 of you taking part. We were able to use route A this week, which I know would have thrilled many of you with the hill ;)

Maybe not the most ideal conditions this week; leaves on the ground, standing water, soft and muddy in places. Still, this did not deter 66 of you getting PB's - well done to you all.

We welcomed 41 first timers to the parkrun community. We hope you enjoyed your first run with us and look forward to you coming back!

Mack Jeffrey joined our club 10 category – well done Mack! Gerry presented him with a club 10 certificate. Also, well done to Kevin Brushett, this months sweatshop prize winner.

We also gave a birthday shout out to one of our regular runners and volunteers Micheal Splarn Happy Birthday from all of us here at Chelmsford Central parkrun. We hope you had a great day and what better way to start it than joining us for a quick 5k!!

This weeks volunteer shout outs: Brian COLLINS, Charlotte LAURENCE, Clare CHANDLER, Elaine TRIBLEY, Heidi MILLS, Jennifer SELF, Maureen WILSON, Paul BROOKES, Peter CHUBB and Sandy PETROCOCHINO. It would not be possible to put the events on week in week out if it wasn't for our volunteers giving up their time so that others can get enjoyment of taking part in the run - so a MASSIVE thank you for getting involved. If you would like to sign up to volunteer, if you haven't already, you can do so by dropping us an email - we would LOVE to hear from you!

As mentioned we have Essex University with us next week, so if you could arrive an extra 5 minutes earlier to fill out one of their questionnaires - they would be most appreciative!

Lastly, it was lovely to see so many poppies at this weeks run. As we take a moment to reflect on this day of remembrance I will end this report on that very thing...

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them."
