Run Report for Event #117

This week we were joined by 341 runners, of whom 26 were first timers - welcome to Chelmsford Central parkrun, we hope you enjoyed your run and look forward to you joining us again in the future!

Course conditions were good, so good that 57 of you achieved PBs, well done to you all.

Ok, last week a note about 'funnel duckers' and 'double crossers' this week a little reminder about cyclists and parkrun... with the growing number of runners and due to health & safety reasons we are unable to allow cyclists to follow/keep up with runners during the event. This includes children on bikes who may be accompanying adults who are running. You will need to make alternative arrangements in this instance. The paths are narrow in parts and bikes weaving in and out ot the runners pose a risk at the best of times, without them trying to follow a runner. We do appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Ok, so back to this week event:

Run Report for Event #116

Well, thats another event done and dusted! Event #116 to be precise!

This week there were 386 runners, of whom 33 were first timers - welcome to all our first timers, we hope you had a good run with us!

We again managed to start exactly at 9am, so thank you for your co-operation in remaining quiet during the run brief and gathering at the start line on the right side of the cones!! Also, great job on avoiding the daffodils ;) the City Council, will be most pleased :)

Conditions were good, albeit unexpectedly chilly! Despite that, 82 recorded new Personal Bests - so well done to you!

We suspect we may have had either some 'funnel duckers' or 'double crossers' this week! Please only cross the finish line once and when you cross the line, please do take a finish token. Each click of the stopwatch corresponds to a finish position token number, so if you want an accurate time, you will need to abide by this rule. Otherwise all the positions and times after you will be out should you either duck out of the tunnel or cross the finish twice and not take a token! Oh and don't forget your barcode ;)

Run Report for Event #109

Event #109 - the event that almost wasn't!!

Friday came and the weather was not looking hopeful for running the event safely, snow, slush. ice and water were present throughout thenparks we use. So, it was weather watch for the next 24 hours here at Chelmsford Central HQ - you can only imagine how much excitement this brings for all of us ;). However, an early Saturday morning course inspection showed that most of the course was fit to run on. Large patches of ice were identified, mostly in Central Park, and coned off. The decision was made to go ahead with the event as we felt the paths, in general, were in a better condition than the week before.

The decision to run the event was not taken lightly, as the safety of 400+ runners and that of other park users is our top priority and not always as straight forward as it appears! It is the Run Director for that event who makes the call on the safety of the course.

So apologies that the event this week started 11 minutes late, we do endeavour to start the event at 9am, but as we are all volunteers and sometimes there are things to consider that are not perhaps obvious, it is inevitable that this may, at times, happen.

Ok, moving swiftly on! 329 of you joined us this week. Whilst I had declared the course safe to run, I did urge anyone who didn't feel confident running in the conditions to not run and that all runners to trust their training and go easy if necessary, as the conditions were not ideal - there is always next time for that PB! Having said that, 61 of you recorded PBs - so well done to you!

Our first lady finisher forgot her barcode this week (I believe her to be pictured below) so is not recorded as such, finishing almost a minute quicker than displayed in the results. So just a reminder to everyone, no barcode, no time, no exception!!

Chris WATSON (JM15-17) of Chelmsford AC, was third over the line in 18:17.

Women's placings:
Jessica PILGRIM (SW30-34) (Unattached) was first (34th overall) over the line in 20:46 - second time in 8 appearances.

Run Report for Event #97

This week 358 of you braved the wet and muddy conditions and we welcomed 29 first timers to Chelmsford Central parkrun! I think for the first time we did have some rain during the run, but this quickly cleared up!

Course conditions were wet and muddy, so much so, we had to make a small course alteration just outside of death valley.

Despite the conditions 56 of you recorded PBs this week so well done to you!

Our new PA equipment made it's debut this week and I had to really restrain myself from bursting into song - even despite a challenge that had been laid down by fellow core team member Simon - maybe next time ;) We hope you will all now be able to hear us loud and clear during the run brief and remain quiet during this and the health and safety announcements!

We had a few certificates to give out this week and a special mention to Liz Davies who picked up her club 50 certificate, but not only that went on to be the first lady in the Chelmsford 10k the following day and take the County Championship! She also qualified for the Essex Team in the Essex League cross-county, representing Essex in Southern inter-counties (I hope I got that right!)!!! Well done to you Liz, a fantastic achievement, what an inspiration you are to us all.

We had a number of parkrunners join in with the 'bring your bling week' and it was lovely to see everyones achievements outside of parkrun - thanks to everyone who took part!

Run Report for Event #96

Event #96 only 3 more to go until our 100!! Hard to believe that in that time we have seen 3,771 different runners take part in our event, that have totalled a whooping 124,275km in a total of 24,855 runs!!

Anyway, moving on to this weeks event... we saw 367 runners cross the finish line, 22 of which were first timers!

Our one and only tourist (or the only person who raised their hand when asked!) was the Event Director from Southend parkrun, Alex Thornton, a big thank you for making him feel welcome as well as all our first timers. We hope you enjoyed your run with us!

We also had some of the Brentwood parkrun core team join us this week, to do some training and learn new skills. So a big thanks to them for filling some of our key volunteer roles.

We had one runner join our 50 club this week and that was none other than one of our juniors, Katie Brazier! She ran her first run with us back at event #4 and was one of our first junior runners to participate here at Chelmsford Central. What an achievement Katie, and welcome to club 50.

We reverted back to route A this week, so we saw the return of the 'hill' out at Admirals Park. Course conditions in general were good, although it was quite muddy in death valley and the other grassy areas of the course. This didn't stop 66 of you recording PBs this week - well done to you all.

Run Report for Event #86

Event #86, chase the pacer week!! Another glorious morning here at Chelmsford Central parkrun, where we were joined by 387 of you. We used our primary route and other than it being slightly slippery on the grassy areas the course conditions were good.

We welcomed 46 first timers to our community, and whilst I forgot to give them a shout-out in the run brief (note to self!), I am sure our regular runners and rest of our community made them feel very welcome :)

I also forgot to welcome any tourists and give anybody doing their 50th run a mention!! We hope you enjoyed your run with us and well done to those completing their 50th run! Also, noted for this week! You just cannot get the staff ;)

So, tree cutting vans! Who would have thought they would just appear and park themselves on the route just as I said '3-2-1 GO'! Certainly not I! Anyway, thanks to quick thinking volunteer Paul and his daughter who hot footed it over there and expertly marshalled all our runners safely around both vehicles, we adverted any crisis! Our events really would not be possible without our volunteers!

Which leads me on to the narrow metal bridge... Now I know that you lot are all lovely people, but when you are in a pack of runners hurtling through the park, you can actually, unintentionally, be quite intimidating and daunting to other park users. Especially at this point, we are asking you to cross the bridge in single file, keeping to the left and if you need to give way or stop, then please do, there is always another run and another PB. We have no priority over other park users and if other park users do stop for the runners, then please show them some love. If there are angry words, please just smile and thank them. We would not want to be in a position whereby the Council are receiving complaints and we are no longer able to put on the event. We ask for your understanding and cooperation in this area :)

So our pacers, helped 98 of you achieve PBs this week, so well done to you and massive thanks to our pacers!

Heidi and Rob Mills, for doubling up by taking photos as well as timekeeping and pacing. Janet, Apryl, Chris and Simon who expertly assisted pre-event. My scanning team Janet, Michael and Daisy, all the remaining marshal's Clementina, Gordon, Hilda, Holly, Lizzie, timekeeper Michael, finish tokens by Paul and his daughter, and my post event support crew Matt, Chris, Anna, Janet, Simon and Nikki. Run Report for Event #77

This week we saw 299 runners join us for our 'Tour de France' event, braving the damp conditions. It was lovely seeing so many of you joining in with our 'wear something yellow' theme, with one of our regular volunteers, Sharon Haldane, taking the cover photo slot this week sporting her 'Tour de France' t-shirt! We even had our very own tour makers, Gerry and Tracy !

This week we also had a new runner who completed the course and raised £500 for the Bobby Moore Trust - unfortunately I have no further details, but if it was you, then please do write in so we can share your success! (Looking at the photos I believe it was Glen Smith - so well done to you!)

Also joining us this week was Richard Hammer from Basingstoke. Richard completed his 200th run with us on Saturday - thank you for choosing Chelmsford Central parkrun for this momentous occasion!

So, chase the pacer week! Always such a buzz after this event, seeing people achieve PBs - well done to everyone :). Although all our pacers deserve a shout out, our 20min pacer, Darren and 36min pacer, Chris, both went back out having completed the course in their chosen time, to help bring others in - Chris went back out twice! Such a great community spirit with everyone wanting everyone else to do well. So, not only to all our pacers, our runners and our volunteers - Thank you for contributing to the success of our weekly events and in helping build the community here at Chelmsford Central parkrun.

Run Report for Event #76

What a lovely day for a parkrun! We had 340 runners this week, although this dropped to 339 when we realised that someone joined the run with less than 1km to go and went through the finishing funnel, received a time and a position token! So if you were in 'postion 26' (which has now been deleted!), please could we have our finish token back! He was out done though by the casual runner who just drifted through the funnel at around 14mins, initially, who we thought was our first finisher with an outstanding new male course record! The situation was resolved and we quickly converted him into to joining us for future runs, afterall, we can all relate to the draw of the finishers funnel ;) !!

Moving swiftly on! We had Richard Nation join us this week handing out flyers for the running session organised by Chelmsford City Council, more information can be found here

A birthday shout-out for Diana Baker, who was starting her weekend of celebrations with a parkrun! Happy Birthday for today Diana :)

Course conditions were good this week. A change of route increased the amount of grassy areas and made the hill 'slightly' longer, however, that did not stop 84 of you achieving PBs this week - great work all round!

All joking aside with regards the finishing funnel, it is crucial that all our runners stick to the guidance that is given them.

- Once you have crossed the 'line' at the start of the funnel, you must stay in the order that you crossed the line as you proceed to collect your finishing token.
- No overtaking in the funnel.
- If you cross the line, you must take a finish token and not 'duck' out of the funnel.
- You must not cross the finish line twice.
- Only those who have completed the entire course should enter the funnel and collect a finishing token, ie if you carry a child for the last bit of the course and cross the finish line, only the person on foot will get a time and a finish position.

We do appreciate your help in these matters as not only do we, as a Core Team, have to follow certain parkrun rules, by not following the instructions it can also make the results processing lengthy and at times wrong.

We will also be enforcing the 'no barcode, no time' parkrun rule - so please Don't Forget Your Barcode! If you would like to order either a credit card size or key ring size barcode, you can do so via this link http://www.parkrun-barcode.org.uk/

As always a mahoosive shout out to all our volunteers!! They were:

Ann THOMAS • Arren DAVEY • Benjamin SPLARN • Claire SPLARN • Clare CHANDLER • Clementina ELEADY-COLE • Corinna CRANCH • Daisy ELEADY-COLE • David STANLEY • Gerry MCGOVERN • Heidi MILLS • Holly CHANDLER • Lizzie HUGHES • Matt BURDGE • Paul BROOKES • Paul GOSS • Paul NORRIS • Rory THOMAS • Rosalind MCKENNA • Ryan SPLARN • Sarah DAVIES • Sarah PRENTICE

A very special mention to 'Nanny' who came along with one of our regular families, the Chandlers, expecting to go off and do a spot of shopping, only to find herself barcode scanning! Thank you to Gloria and the rest of the volunteer crew - without you our events are not possible!

So, I'll be your Run Director again this week. It's pacer week and also, to celebrate the Tour de France we are encouraging all our runners and volunteers to wear something yellow. It would be great to have as many of you as possible joining in with this. If you would like to pace or be paced at a particular time, or you would like to volunteer, do drop me a message to chelmsfordcentraloffice@parkrun.com

Run Report for Event #63

The sun continues to shine here at Chelmsford Central parkrun, meaning excellent PB conditions! Some great PB's at that AND a news Ladies course record!! LIZ DAVIES broke her previous course record knocking 13 seconds off, what an outstanding effort from Liz - well done to you!

A further 109 PBs were achieved this morning, including a remarkable 20:45 from junior Ryan Splarn - top effort from everyone!

A touch of parkrun royalty at this weeks event. We were joined by Paul Sinton-Hewitt, parkrun founder and his wife Jo Sinton-Hewitt. Paul started parkun in 2004 with just 13 runners in Bushy Park, Teddington. Since then, the Bushy parkrun has become a well established running event; open to everyone who happen to be near a parkrun venue on Saturday morning. Events now take place every week in Australia, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.

So for those of you who are interested in some stats, as a few of us are over here at Chelmsford Central HQ, here are a few interesting figures (courtesy of parkrun & wikipedia)

Global participation first exceeded 10,000 in April 2011 and 20,000 in August 2012. Neither participation nor event numbers show any sign of slowing with global participation first exceeding 30,000 in April 2013 (225 events), 40,000 in August 2013 (282 events), 50,000 in November 2013 (317 events) and 60,000 in January 2014 (340 events).

As at 31st December 2013, there were over 760,000 registered parkrunners across 10 countries. Just over 332,000 individuals did their first run with parkrun in 2013, taking the total number of individuals who have ever run with parkrun to 663,900. Just over 1.95 million runs were recorded in 2013 taking the total number of runs since it started in 2004 to 3.92 million runs. Making all this possible were the contributions of 42,800 unique volunteers who volunteered in excess of 180,000 times across 362 events or locations while delivering 14,015 events during the year. 153 new events were added in 2013.

As Garry Smith, one of regular runners, tweeted (@garrygen) 'what a awesome thing he has started' awesome is, perhaps, an understatement!

We were also joined by Paul Graham, founder of Junior parkrun, also at Bushy Park. They had come along to talk to myself and Gerry about the proposed Chelmsford Central Juniors parkrun, that we are hoping to launch early May. We welcomed them in true Chelmsford Central parkrun style as they joined the other 352 of you who ran the course. We received some great feedback on the course and the atmosphere, so thank you to all our runners and supporters for creating such a wonderful community to be a part of and making everyone feel welcome.

We also had one of regular runners and newest member of the core team, Simon Oswald, undertake his 50th parkrun. Well done to Simon! We are going to see our club 50 grow as the year progresses, meaning it wont be long until we welcome our first 'homegrown' club 100 runner!

Also worth a mention, Tim Woulfe, Tim ran the course in 17:25 mins and then jumped straight on to volunteer to scan barcodes! There are a few roles that we have available for post run, some dependent on your course time, although our token sorting slot is proving very popular! It has been lovely to see the last couple of weeks families sat down in the Cafe sorting tokens together! If you would like to volunteer, do drop us a line at chelmsfordcentralhelpers@parkrun.com Thank you to all our volunteers, without whom our events would not be possible!
