Run Report for Event #63

The sun continues to shine here at Chelmsford Central parkrun, meaning excellent PB conditions! Some great PB's at that AND a news Ladies course record!! LIZ DAVIES broke her previous course record knocking 13 seconds off, what an outstanding effort from Liz - well done to you!

A further 109 PBs were achieved this morning, including a remarkable 20:45 from junior Ryan Splarn - top effort from everyone!

A touch of parkrun royalty at this weeks event. We were joined by Paul Sinton-Hewitt, parkrun founder and his wife Jo Sinton-Hewitt. Paul started parkun in 2004 with just 13 runners in Bushy Park, Teddington. Since then, the Bushy parkrun has become a well established running event; open to everyone who happen to be near a parkrun venue on Saturday morning. Events now take place every week in Australia, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.

So for those of you who are interested in some stats, as a few of us are over here at Chelmsford Central HQ, here are a few interesting figures (courtesy of parkrun & wikipedia)

Global participation first exceeded 10,000 in April 2011 and 20,000 in August 2012. Neither participation nor event numbers show any sign of slowing with global participation first exceeding 30,000 in April 2013 (225 events), 40,000 in August 2013 (282 events), 50,000 in November 2013 (317 events) and 60,000 in January 2014 (340 events).

As at 31st December 2013, there were over 760,000 registered parkrunners across 10 countries. Just over 332,000 individuals did their first run with parkrun in 2013, taking the total number of individuals who have ever run with parkrun to 663,900. Just over 1.95 million runs were recorded in 2013 taking the total number of runs since it started in 2004 to 3.92 million runs. Making all this possible were the contributions of 42,800 unique volunteers who volunteered in excess of 180,000 times across 362 events or locations while delivering 14,015 events during the year. 153 new events were added in 2013.

As Garry Smith, one of regular runners, tweeted (@garrygen) 'what a awesome thing he has started' awesome is, perhaps, an understatement!

We were also joined by Paul Graham, founder of Junior parkrun, also at Bushy Park. They had come along to talk to myself and Gerry about the proposed Chelmsford Central Juniors parkrun, that we are hoping to launch early May. We welcomed them in true Chelmsford Central parkrun style as they joined the other 352 of you who ran the course. We received some great feedback on the course and the atmosphere, so thank you to all our runners and supporters for creating such a wonderful community to be a part of and making everyone feel welcome.

We also had one of regular runners and newest member of the core team, Simon Oswald, undertake his 50th parkrun. Well done to Simon! We are going to see our club 50 grow as the year progresses, meaning it wont be long until we welcome our first 'homegrown' club 100 runner!

Also worth a mention, Tim Woulfe, Tim ran the course in 17:25 mins and then jumped straight on to volunteer to scan barcodes! There are a few roles that we have available for post run, some dependent on your course time, although our token sorting slot is proving very popular! It has been lovely to see the last couple of weeks families sat down in the Cafe sorting tokens together! If you would like to volunteer, do drop us a line at chelmsfordcentralhelpers@parkrun.com Thank you to all our volunteers, without whom our events would not be possible! Run Report for Event #62

So, in true parkrun weather tradition we had a lovely sunny morning this week. 360 of you took advantage of the glorious sunshine and joined us this week. As the weather had been kind we were able to use our 'usual' route, and the course conditions were good.

We kicked off the proceedings with awarding Aurav KANYAL with his club 10 certificate. Aurav has done so well, as have all of youngsters, with his progress over the last 10 weeks, knocking almost 5mins off his time. Well done to you!

It is always lovely to see so many families join us and this week, and perhaps for the first time, we were joined by 3 generations from one family - so a shout out to the McCann family.

We had a number of tourists this week from Valentines park, Pontefract (these can be seen pictured below giving us 'the bolt'). Not forgetting also our special vistor from Porth Cawl, in South Wales (big up the Welsh massive ;)) Brain Rule who joined us on his 80th birthday to run the course with his son Richard (one of our regular runners). We showed him some Chelmsford parkrun love with 3 cheers for him on his special day, from all 360+ in attendance. We hope you enjoyed your time with us Brian and had a fabulous birthday - who wouldn't want to start their birthday with a parkrun ;)

'Penblwydd hapus i chi, Penblwydd hapus i chi, Penblwydd hapus i Brian, Penblwydd hapus i chi'

So who knew that shoes grew on trees? A rather fascinating sight on Saturday, on the tree as you turn off to the finishers funnel... pairs of shoes hanging from the branches! I bet they weren't Asics, Saucony or Brookes! ;)

Another great turnout for event #39 – 231 in total. Despite the damp and slightly muddy conditions there were 46 PB’s - awesome job!

Chester Tribley joined our other juniors in the club 10 category – well done Chester! It’s lovely to see this number continue to grow, as more and more juniors take part.

We also gave a shout out to one of our regular runners Joanne Knapek as it was her last run before getting married – so congratulations to her and her new husband, Pete , look forward to seeing you back as a ‘Parry’!

This week we had 27 new runners who we welcomed to Chelmsford central parkrun, along with some tourists and, of course, our regular runners.

You know one of the great things about parkrun? Everyone who comes along to parkrun is on their own journey, whether that is to progress, to get into running, for fitness, for weightloss or to give back. For some, their first time and even first few times can quite often be daunting; they don't want to be last or think they won't be very good. Parkrun is a place where nobody judges, whether you are fit, fast, overweight, slow, running or walking; it’s a place to ‘just be’ and continue on whatever journey or goal you are working towards. Everyone is so encouraging and the community atmosphere here at Chelmsford Central continues to grow, and has developed in such a short space of time since its inception back in January this year. So to all our parkrunners and volunteers, thank you for being involved, for encouraging others and for helping to build the community. Let's all aim to inspire each other :)

Lastly, and by no means least, the volunteer shout outs this week are: Abbie MCGOVERN, Greg POTTS, Heidi MILLS, Jane POMFRET, Leighton WILLIAMS, Lesley A TIPLER, Libby WATSON, Neil WILSON, Ronald Martin WILLIAMS, Sharon HALDANE and Simon OSWALD. Our events would not be possible without you, so a MASSIVE thank you for getting involved. If you would like to sign up to volunteer, if you haven't already, you can do so by dropping us an email - we would LOVE to hear from you!

If you need a little coaxing to volunteer you can find some here it may just inspire you to get involved and hopefully not put you off ;)

We’d like to thank you for your patience regarding the issues experienced with some of the results this week. Many have now been resolved. If you feel that your time or position number is incorrect, please email and we will endeavour to resolve it as quickly as possible.

As I hand back to Gerry for the next 2 weeks all that is left to say is, as always, you have been FABULOUS! :)

Run Report for Event #20

We had another attendance record this week with 207 people successfully completing the run. The numbers just keep going up and up so thank to you all for wanting to be part of the parkrun community and for being here each week. As a team of volunteers we love to see new people come to each event and to meet old friends and regulars, it give us great satisfaction and all the reward we need!

It was a great run with dry and sunny weather and we presented two juniors with a Club-10 award for completing 10 events, so well done to Holly Chandler and Marianne Aspbury.

Thank you also to the team as we had great volunteer support this week and if you would like to help out then let us know and dont forget you also get points added to your parkrun total for volunteering.

Before I mention the details of the results I have to mention something that is becoming a little bit of a problem. It may seem like a small thing at the time but the effect can be significant for other runners and the volunteers. Ok so what is it, well some people seem to like to keep the position tokens and whilst I can understand that you may want to have a 'souvenir' of the run, afterall it is such an awesome experience ;), these are needed for us to re-use each week. If we lose a token and it is not noticed then someone, maybe even you, will get an inaccurate time and we would not want that to happen so PLEASE please give back the position token once you have finished.

On a personal note from me, I shall shortly be taking a step back (not very far, mind you ;)) for a while, whilst we await the arrival of another little Davies - I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for their support, the runners, the volunteers and the rest of the Core Team. It has been an incredible journey to date and I look forward to seeing Chelmsford central parkrun continue to thrive!

Well, another great turn out for event #19 - 189 runners to be precise! The sun shone and other than a little surface water the conditions were extremely favorable.

We tried a different starting point this week, although kept with the other elements of the new start and finish. The new finish area has definitely made a huge difference. It is lovely to see parkrunners, who have already finished, encourage those who are coming across the finish line - so thank you for helping us build a real community spirit.

So, as I sign off for the rest of the bank holiday weekend I would just like to express our gratitude for the amazing support we have received over the last 19 events. When the core team met up for the first time back last autumn, we really had no idea of the kind of interest we would have. As the numbers continue at a consistent rate and the community grows, it makes every part of it worthwhile. So to our runners, volunteers and for the rest of the core team - we salute you!

Until next week - you have been OUTSTANDING :)

Run Report for Event #16

This is the run report for event number 16.

WOW! What can I say, what an amazing turnout this morning! There was definitely a warm fuzzy feeling watching all 202 of you set off this morning :) - what a privilege being involved in such a warm spirited community event. Each of the core team secretly aspires to be the one who holds the record course attendance on 'their' watch and this week, having set a new record last week of 143, it was completely smashed by today's numbers, and on MY watch!! So a MASSIVE thank you for everyone who came along and supported us today at Chelmsford Central parkrun - we are very honored :)

We had ideal conditions this morning, nice and sunny, not too hot and with a slight breeze, which meant there were no course changes and a good day to get a PB ;)

This morning, Gerry, started off by awarding Katie Brazier with her club 10 certificate - so a BIG well done to Katie!!

We were also joined by some lovely ladies who are taking part in the Moonwalk next week, along with more walkers. It was lovely to have more people join us from this category - so well done and thank you for coming along to support us.

A Few Run Highlights

We had 49 first timers this morning with 89 of the 202 achieving PB's.

Well done to our fastest male, Malcolm MUIR, first over the line in 16:32 - an amazing third time in 3 appearances!! Second over the line for the men was Ken HOYE, in 17:10 and placed third was Gary CHANDLER, in 17:44 - Gary has been first to finish on 2 previous occassions.

Our fastest lady, Jackie STRETTON, 10th overall, finished in 18:39 - 6th time in 12 appearances. Coming in second was Carys SUTTON, 25th overall, in 20:13 and placed third for the ladies was Siobhan COOK, 40th overall, in 21:19.

You can find the latest results for Chelmsford Central parkrun by going to the Latest Results page on the website, or by picking a specific week from the Event History table.

I would also like to thank everyone for their patience in the short wait in getting everyone's barcode scanned - that is the biggest queue we've ever had!! So, my first volunteer shout out goes to Catherine Davey and Therese Brabant, our 2 lovely ladies assigned scanning duty this morning. Given the high numbers, they processed everyone quickly and efficiently - thank you ladies you did an awesome job :)

The rest of the volunteer shout outs this week are: Anna Luff, Sue Smith, Leonie Brabant, Paul Brookes, Nicole Callaghan, Chris Davies, Mark Moughton and his daughter, James Smith, Gerry McGovern and Clare Chandler! We are most appreciative here at Chelmsford Central parkrun HQ; our events would not be possible without you. If you would like to sign up to volunteer, if you haven't already, you can do so here

Run Report for Event #10

This is the run report for event number 10.
So, having finally thawed out from this morning I bring you the run report. The first Chelmsford Central parkrun of spring and would you believe it? MORE SNOW!! I was laying in my nice warm bed at 7am, taking full advantage of my pregnancy privileges, knowing that both Gerry and Len were out checking the course and setting up in the freezing conditions, waiting anxiously for an update on whether we were on for today! It was, indeed, all systems GO!

We are not 'fair weather runners' here at Chelmsford Central parkrun, we are 'all conditions' kind of runners (and volunteers!) and it takes more than a little bit of snow and sub zero temperatures to stop this parkrun going ahead!!

We did, however, have to postpone the visit from Councillor Ride and the photo shoot from the Essex Chronicle and more disappointingly, for the runners and volunteers, we had to put off Marc from the 'Snack Shack' ;) - meaning no hot drinks!

A BIG well done to our 43 runners, 2 dogs and a buggy! Who, despite the snow, slush and minus temperatures, joined us this morning. Even with the inclement weather we only had a minor route adjustment out at Admirals Park by the playground. So, thank you to those runners, both our regulars and first timers, for coming along and supporting our parkrun.

Gerry also presented the Sweat Shop Monthly prize certificate to our worthy winner Clare St John-Coleman - we hope you have fun choosing your new trainers :)
A few words from Clare...

Hi,

I just wanted to send you a message to thank you for awarding me the monthly pakrun prize for February. I was very proud to be awarded with the certificate at the run this morning. Ever since the Parkrun started in Chelmsford, I have been determined to get up on a Saturday morning to either run or volunteer. It has been a challenge for me as I normally do long or triple jump and 5k is well out of my comfort zone! I am looking forward to choosing my new trainers as I have been using my best trainers for the Parkrun and, over the past few weeks, with the snow and the rain, they have got in quite a poor condition. I was looking to buy some new ones so this award has come just at the right time!

Looking forward now to the better weather and hopefully, some better times.

Thanks again,
Clare St John-Coleman

A Few Run Highlights

Well done to our fastest male, Timothy James BALLARD, over the line in 19:48, first time in his 2nd appearance too! Who, I bet, is now glad he was encouraged to go back to his car for his barcode, especially when holding the much coveted '0001' position token ;)! Our registration volunteers are very hot on enforcing the parkrun rule of 'No Barcode, No Time', so please make sure you bring it with you each week, to ensure you get your time.

Our fastest lady, Jackie STRETTON (5th overall) over the line in 20:42 - 4th time in 8 appearances!

The following runners recorded the best Age Grade scores:

Paul JEGGO - was graded 74.17 % for the time 20:12 (4th overall).
Leo COLE - was graded 71.66 % for the time 19:56 (second overall).
Jackie STRETTON - was graded 71.50 % for the time 20:42 (5th overall).

You can find the latest results for Chelmsford Central parkrun by going to the Latest Results page on the website, or by picking a specific week from the Event History table.
I know we give the volunteers a shout out each week, but, today was probably the coldest and harshest conditions out of our 10 events - there were A LOT of numb hands today. So firstly, MASSIVE thank you to Gerry and Len, who were out from 7am setting up and checking the course (and went through 2 pairs of gloves!) and to the rest of our volunteers Arren, Matt, Allison, Abbie, Sarah G, Sarah W, Simon, Kevin, Liz, Alistair and Ian - thank you for braving the cold! We are most appreciative here at Chelmsford Central parkrun HQ; our events would not be possible without you. If you would like to sign up to volunteer, if you haven't already, you can do so here

As well as checking on this site regularly for the latest information and updates, don't forget you can also find us on Twitter and Facebook.

So there ends my 2 weeks as Run Director as I hand the reins back to Gerry. Let's hope we see an improvement in the weather and a little boost for our numbers over the next coming weeks.

Have a great Easter all and until next time - you have been awesome! :)

Run Report for Event #9

This is the run report for event number 9.
So, a few degrees warmer this week, albeit still a little drizzly, not quite enough to cause a change of route though. My first week as Run Director and all was going well until I made a rookie mistake!! Yes, folks, it would help if I had actually said 'GO' after my '3 - 2 - 1' countdown! I have definitely made a mental note of that. I think next week I will take Gerry's advice of using the megaphone also, as I'm sure we will pass the elusive 100 mark!

Despite the rain and mud we had 72 runners who battled against the wind along our usual route. Thank you to all those who did turn up and took part.
Included in our 72 runners... a spiderman and our very own 'superhero' uh hmm, I mean Event Director, Gerry! Of the 72, 17 were first timers and 17 recorded new Personal Bests - it is great to see new faces amongst our regulars and seeing people continually improving on their PB's; the beauty of a weekly timed event ;).

Myself, Gerry, Tracy and Sue were also out promoting Chelmsford Central parkrun this morning at the Comic Relief mile organised by Chelmsford City Council, so we're hopeful that as the word continues to spread the greater the numbers will become! Also, as the weather continues to get warmer(!) we are expecting this to bring in more people, meaning more course records, and even more new PB's!
A Few Run Highlights

Well done to our fastest male, Jonny MIESNER, first over the line in 18:32, in his first appearance too. Ernie LERPINIERE, one of our regulars runners, is currently top of the Men's Points Table with 707 pts - well done Ernie. Our fastest lady, another of our regular runners, Jackie STRETTON (6th overall) over the line in 20:10 - third time in 7 appearances and remains 2nd in the Woman's Points Table with 693 - great consistent running Jackie.

MASSIVE thank you to our volunteers, Susie, Ernie, Becky, Jackie, Chris, Jon and Christine and of course to the rest of the core team, Len, Gerry, Tracy and Sue. These events would not be possible without our volunteers. For those of you who haven’t tried it yet please do consider giving it a go; it's also a good way to give your points a little boost ;)!

Next week, we will be welcoming Councillor Ride and the Essex Chronicle to our event. So to be part of a photo opportunity please get to our usual start point by 8:45am, where we intend to have a group photo for the Chronicle - it would be awesome if you could be there for this.

Looking forward to seeing you next week on 'parkrunday' and thank you for your continued support :)

Run Report for Event #6

So hopefully by now you're reading this in the nice warm confines of your living room with a nice hot cup of cocoa - it was rather chilly this morning. According to the official temperature recorded for the Chelmsford Central parkrun it was -1c and with the occasional icy blast of cold air this felt like -47c (Official Temperature as displayed on the dash of of my car!). There was also a light dusting of snow throughout the event but didn't cause any significant issues other than making our photos look a bit speckly ;-)

Gary Chandler & Tilly Despite the chilly weather the running conditions were good, the ground was dry and firm under foot (all that mud from the previous week has frozen) and we also managed to break our runners record with 93!

What was really notable about this event is that this event seemed really family orientated. We seemed to see lots of families out running and I also think we've seen the greatest number of runners out with their dogs too (we think four)!

Our first place runner was no exception, Gary Chandler who finished in 18:49. Whilst he didn't break the course record he did finish first with his dog Tilly. So Gary now holds the course record for fastest time with his dog (another category we've just invented!).

I'm not too sure but I also think Gary and his family now also hold the record for most family members (four) getting involved in a single Chelmsford Central parkrun event (drop us an e-mail if you think otherwise) with Jenny Chandler finishing in 66th position, Holly as a marshal and Clare as the tail runner also completing the course and beating her PB!

parkrun do have a Dog Policy which is well worth a read, but it looks like that you've already read it!
Of our 93 runners Wendy King was our fastest lady who completed the course in 19:59, whilst this was Wendy's first run at Chelmsford Central many of you may have recognised Wendy from Event 5 where she and her son volunteered.

There were 30 new PB's this week, which was superb. It's also worth noting that as this is our 6th event we should soon start to see our first Junior members entering the 10 Club. Parkrun awards T-Shirts for runners completing a landmark number of parkruns. For information about the parkrun Clubs or any other parkrun info, check out the parkrun Wiki

Family parkrunners. Don't forget that we'll laminate your precious barcode for you, just leave it in the little grey box and collect it next week. We've now got 497 registered parkrunners, and that little box is getting really crowded!

Many thanks to all of today's volunteers; Abbie and Sue who were on Registration, Sarah & Paul who were your Timers, Therese was on Numbers (the coldest job of all!), Holly, James, Wendy, Paul and Gerry were your Marshals and Clare was your Tail Runner - without you guys n' gals this parkrun event just wouldn't be possible!

So it's been an absolute blast (very nearly literally) being Run Director for Events 5 and 6, Sue will be taking over for events 7 and 8, please give her your support.

If you want to get involved, either with next week's run or any other run, get in touch through our volunteering page.

Run Report for Event #5

Whilst the week leading up to our fifth parkrun featured rain on several occasions, this was no where to be found on the day and we had some superb weather (it's nice to be able to say that and think back to some of the conditions you've had to run in the past month!). Running conditions were mostly dry, but a majority of our offroad "grassy" sections were a bit muddier than we would have liked.

Mark Woodley It was great to see some familiar faces from our previous runs as well as new faces - both experienced parkrunners from afar as well as those who chose Chelmsford Central parkrun for their first ever parkrun.

Well done to Mark Woodley (left) who completed the course first in 16:12. So whilst the course record stands* this still wasn't bad for Mark on his first ever parkrun! Our fastest lady was Sophie Riches who completed the course in 18:35 which is both a new PB for Sophie and a new course record.

Both Mark and Sophie run for Chelmsford Athletic Club.

* Paul Molyneux holds the course record of 15:52.
There were 91 runners in total (that includes our two tail runners) which is a new record for Chelmsford Central. There were 23 runners in all who were new to both parkrun and specifically our Chelmsford Central parkrun - so a big "Welcome to the Family" to you guys & gals!

A truly fantastic 36 of you achieved new Personal Bests, so a huge well done to you!

Sadly Alistair Gillan was just pipped to a new award I've decided to call, The "I didn't get a new PB but I got the closest" Award. Alistair missed his PB by 3 seconds and was beaten by Rosa Prideaux who crossed the line one whole second behind her PB! Sooooo close! Better luck next week to the both of you!

Julius the Tail Runner. So this was my first go at directing my own parkrun, under the watchful gaze of Gerry your Event Director, and enjoyed every minute of it. This, I believe, was largely in part to this weeks team of volunteers - they made it really easy! So a huge big thanks to Allison, Clare, Gerry, Karen, Matt, Maureen, Paul, Paula, Becky, Sarah, Sue, Wendy & Zach for helping out during today's run.

I'm really looking forward to running Chelmsford Central parkrun #6 next week and then I hand the reins over to Sue who will be your Run Director for events #7 and #8.

Volunteering is a really rewarding experience and I would strongly recommend you all have a go at it! This parkrun event, like all the other parkrun events that run across the country, really is only possible thanks to the volunteers that contribute to each and every event.

If you want to get involved, either with next week's run or any other run, get in touch through our volunteering page.

Next week we'll be setting up the registration tent a little closer to the Start/Finish lines - Mark, our caterer has decided to move his pitch and I tend to naturally gravitate towards the smell of cooking bacon ;-)
