While Chippenham parkrun has been a constant amongst a few weeks of variation and cancellations in the meteorological and parkrun worlds, it was an absolute delight to meet in Monkton Park this Saturday with such a small chance of rain, almost no wind and a little bit of sunshine.

Our second field would still be best described as soft, offering more than 4% additional bounce, though fortunately without much in the way of surprise water features or wind tunnels this week.

It was our monthly pacer week – we had volunteers attempting to help out runners at 24mins, 25mins, 26mins, 27mins, 28mins, 29mins, 30mins and 37mins. This is one of those volunteer roles with so many plusses that when you’ve done it once you’re addicted!
You get:

  • A volunteer and a run credit.
  • A gentler run – or if that doesn’t take your fancy then you get a consistent run at your choice of pace!
  • An opportunity to help runners get a PB as they can use you as a target.
  • To meet runners in a different part of the field than you usually run in. Everyone’s really chatty – for the first field anyway!
  • A different challenge for yourself as you try to get as close to your pacer time as you can – which is a lot easier said than done!

While some of us are pleased at making it through the mud in one piece each week, one of our visitors from Salisbury arrived to run our parkrun dressed as a nut!

Why?

Gina is training to run the London Marathon, to set a Guinness World Record dressed as the Fastest Nut to run the London Marathon. At the same time, she is raising money for Rebuilding Sri Lanka: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ginanutrun

We also welcomed slightly less nutty runners from Clumber Park, Lancing Beach, Preston Park-Brighton, Tooting Common, Cardiff, Oxford and Rotterdam.

This week 196 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 19 were first timers and 28 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 21 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 30 volunteers:

Michael BRIGHT • Heather PERRY • Neil ADDISON • Andrew NICHOLSON • Richard M SMITH • Julie TRUDGEON • Daryl ARCHER • Travis ARCHER • Selby ARCHER • Julia MADDOCKS • Giles ARCHER • Daniel BEAN • Julie BEAN • Jules PEARSON • Glyn CRUICKSHANK • Ben CRUICKSHANK • Edward SATCHELL • Chris MAJOR • Rita LINDSAY • Angela POMFRET • Sarah ALDERSON • Philip AKERMAN • Peter FOX • Rob WOODS • John BELCHER • Phil BUNNEY • Imogen WILLGRESS • David WEALES • Suzanne MACDONALD • Lily WAINWRIGHT

The day dawned on another wet and windy Saturday, and as I approached the meeting point, I wasn’t sure we’d have many turn up. As I got closer, I could make out the figure of someone in costume, someone had come dressed as a Spartan soldier to mark his 300th parkrun, being none other than our volunteer coordinator Andrew (Leonidus) Nicholson, complete with spear and helmet. Not one for drawing attention to himself much, his achievement nearly went unannounced, had it not been for big mouth (me) drawing it to the attention of the run director. Andrew has possibly accumulated the largest number of kilometres in his parkrun travels, having completed many of them in his native Australia and having completed over 50 unique parkruns in the UK and Australia. Great achievement Beardy! Other milestones today were:

As always, the crowds gathered with minutes to spare, and there was a glimmer of blue sky as we set off and the rain didn’t return. The course today though was deliciously muddy on the meadow, with some large puddles on the gravel path to divert around or splash through, making it fairly hard going. As tailwalker, I didn’t achieve a bad time today though of 45:18, which is relatively speedy for the conditions. 191 braved the conditions today.

Other stats: 6 runners achieved a personal best. There were 9 first timers to parkrun and 24 visitors from other parkruns. Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who made this event happen.

Thank you for reading the report, my first foray into this particular role..

The One with the Numbers!

Chippenham parkrun
Event number 300
1st February 2020

2121 days since Chippenham parkrun’s 1st event on 12th April 2014, on 1st February 2020, we ran, walked and jogged our 300th!

Over the 299 events before this one, 8794 runners have returned to Chippenham parkrun an average of 5.7 times meaning we have timed 49,773 parkruns across our finish line.

Now there’s a statistic …. Could we celebrate our 50,000th coming over the line today?
Of course we could!

Maisie Lewendon who usually runs at Royal Tunbridge Wells parkrun was in fact our 50,000th finisher and was delighted to win the box of chocolates as she finished!

Congratulations to Sarah Barker who became our 3rd ‘home’ Chippenham parkrunner to run her 250th parkrun!
Since discovering parkrun tourism and with Melksham parkrun opening close to her in 2017, we still enjoy Sarah’s company at Chippenham on special occasions. She has completed 132 parkruns at Chippenham, volunteered 41 times and visited 39 different locations!

Congratulations too to Daniel Leithall and Sophia Hunt who both completed their 10th parkrun! Sophia has visited 4 different parkruns, completing 6 runs at Chippenham. Daniel has completed all of his at Chippenham. Both got a PB today – Brilliant!

Running his 760th parkrun at Chippenham parkrun was Darren Wood, this is the most parkruns run by anyone in the world …. Amazing!

From there to the firsts … we welcomed The Gough’s Gallopers who graduated their 10week Couch to 5k programme with us – they were some of the 31 First Timers, of which 13 were completing their first ever parkrun.

We welcomed tourists from Medina, IOW; Boston, Lincolnshire; Cheltenham; Birkenhead; Brueton; Chipping Sodbury; Wales; Devon; Andover.

Thankyou to the 35 volunteers today including our 11 fantastic pacers.

In another 2121 days, it will be Saturday November 22, 2025 – see you all on Chippenham parkrun #600!

New Years Day 2020

1st January 2020

Happy New Year! If you have been paying attention over the last 5 years you may remember that I deliver the New Years Day runners brief in rhyme. Steve Pomfret has continued with the prose and very kindly written the news report in rhyme;

It's January 1st, and its parkrun day.
So quite please, let Jules have her say.
Tourists came from far and near.
After seeing the map, their route was clear.
Today the briefing was given in rhyme.
The second field's muddy, a warning of grime.
We celebrated milestones, then welcomed first timers.
And enthusiastically applauded our lovely volunteers.
PBs were unlikely, although some would try.
Please stay to the left, let the fast runners by.
And so to the start.... And off we go.
Lots of parkrunners (437), it might be a bit slow.
So what's our story of the run?
Despite the mud it was great fun.
As I get older, I get slow.
Maybe Canicross is the way to go?
My wife was last,  bringing up the rear.
She was a Tailwalker, let's make that clear.
Two laps of the park and two of the mud,
You'll enjoy it more than you thought you could.
Into the funnel,  and collect your token.
Please get it scanned or the results will be broken.
Now wait for an email, or maybe a text.
And think about parkrun and where you'll go next
Thank you Steve. Now for some stats;
We had a not quite record-breaking but still a bumper 437 people hop, skipping and jumping round the course. We welcomed 21 first timers to the world of parkrun and 78 visitors from other parkruns. Despite the large numbers 43 people recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 42 different clubs took part.

Well done to all of the runners who completed the double (Melksham and Southwick)

It was cold and miserable this morning, the rain held off until the 40th minute, then the clouds burst and down came the rain! A troop of 141 enthusiastic people popped down to run, jog and walk the course. We welcomed 2 brand spanking new first timers to parkrun and we had 8 visitors from other parkruns (Killerton, Ashton Court, Bedfont Lakes,). The conditions were perfect for 17 runners who achieved new Personal Bests.

I was delighted to welcome the Claire Crook to Chippenham, she is the Event Director from Bedfont Lakes parkrun.  It is always nice to get visitors from other parkruns but even more special when it is the ED!

20181124 - ParkRun - 0295

Congratulations to Andrew Craven, who despite his best efforts to remain under the radar with his 50th parkrun milestone was dobbed in by his better half! She arrived just before the start forcing him to take the balloons and identifying him as the mysterious ‘Andy M’. Andrew began running parkrun in March 17 and has completed 32 of the 50 here at Chippenham.

We have a brand new and shiny Run Director – step forward Pete Campbell. Pete and his boys (Luke and Ollie) have been running here at Chippenham since April 2014. When our regular course setter-uppers Julia and Giles are defecting (I mean touring!) at other parkruns Pete, Luke and Ollie step in to set up the course for us. Pete did a marvellous job today in his first stint as RD, I am sure you will see more of him over the winter months.

Chippenham parkrun
Event number 233
3rd November 2018

20181103 - ParkRun - 0006

Today we held the uncancelled-cancelled parkrun! There are a few days every year when we are either unable to use the park or we have to share the park. We had originally planned to cancel, however the Rotary Club of Chippenham kindly allowed us to share the park with them whilst they were setting up for the Annual Chippenham Fireworks Display. In order for the Rotary Club to set up their stalls we had to move the start back to the original start position on the main path from the town.

We had expected a drop in numbers because a few regulars were taking the opportunity of a cancelled (uncancelled) parkrun to travel and do some tourism at other parkruns. However, 169 people turned up to run, jog and walk the course. We welcomed 6 first timers to world of parkrun and we welcomed 15 visitors from other parkruns such as Forest of Dean, Gloucester, Nonsuch, Plymouth, Worcester and Chipping Sodbury. 20 runners smashed their previous times and recorded new personal bests.

Congratulations to Ethan Amphlett for completing his 10th milestone parkrun. He has completed all 10 of the runs here at Chippenham.

Many thanks to all of the lovely 23 people who stepped forward to volunteer this week;

Vicky COOPER • Pete CAMPBELL • Dave SOWERBY-WILLIAMS • Ollie CAMPBELL • Neil ADDISON • Andrew NICHOLSON • Jeff KIRK • Joanne GWILLIAM • Richard CLACK • Daniel BEAN • Julie BEAN • Jules PEARSON • Darren COX • Heath GWILLIAM • Noah SMITH • Rita LINDSAY • Beau GWILLIAM • Nigel SHIRES • Stephanie BRAZIER • Lucy BRAZIER • Joseph COX • John BELCHER • Ben HARRIS
