Dennis the Menace

Chippenham parkrun
Event number 302
15th February 2020

Storm Ciara arrived to late to disrupt us last week, however, Storm Dennis threatened to be a menace. As a run director it is down to me to decide whether or not I should cancel. Like most people in the UK I spent Friday night glued to my Met Office app (other apps are available!), whilst listening to the wind howling against the windows hoping that the wind would die down and not leave a trail of devastation in its wake.

We arrived early to set up and check the course as we always do and I was delighted when Pete returned from the Muddy Meadow to say that the paths were clear and that it was business as usual.

In the first timers briefing I welcomed 25 visitors from other parkruns such as Ashton Court, Maidstone, Bromley, Melksham and Bath Skyline. I also welcomed 2 first timers to parkrun (though I suspect there was more!)

I did the usual brief, noting that everyone was reluctant to stand in the mud - I reminded them that there was no avoiding the mud.....in fact there was a lovely batch of wet and sticky mud waiting for them on the second field! I also warned that if a branch were to fall during the run it would be game over and everyone needs to return to the start line, get scanned and everyone would get a time of 59:59. Fortunately it didnt come to that and the 178 runners that turned up enjoyed a safe but somewhat windy run!

Many thanks to the 21 marvelous volunteers who braved the weather to marshal, scan, funnel manage and timekeep for us: Heather PERRY • Pete CAMPBELL • Victoria ALLISON • Ollie CAMPBELL • Neil ADDISON • Andrew NICHOLSON • Julie TRUDGEON • Ian MOORE • Jim PEARSON • Daniel BEAN • Jules PEARSON • Edward SATCHELL • Alan JONES • Rita LINDSAY • Charlotte NORMAN • Leslie Paul LADLE • Celia STEVENS • Marie FOX • Kate STEWART • David WEALES • Suzanne MACDONALD

Once the last runner was in we packed up and went home dancing with glee that Storm Dennis had not ruined our day! Little did I know that pesky Dennis has indeed been a menace! When I got home I started to process the results, something that I have done many, many times before I could almost do it blindfolded....I did say almost! The times uploaded and then one of the scanners uploaded......then disaster.....the other scanning app kept crashing. I tried everything I could to get the data out of the scanning app but to no avail, even the tech support was unable to explain what has happened. I put out a plea on Facebook asking for people to get in touch....and they did! Thank goodness for the funnel managers notes...we don't often need them but they are really useful when things go wrong.  So my Saturday afternoon and Sunday was spent forensically piecing the results back together. Not sure it was a perfect job, but hey-ho we are all volunteers and we do the best we can!

Have a great week of running see you all next week.

Jules

The One with the Numbers!

Chippenham parkrun
Event number 300
1st February 2020

2121 days since Chippenham parkrun’s 1st event on 12th April 2014, on 1st February 2020, we ran, walked and jogged our 300th!

Over the 299 events before this one, 8794 runners have returned to Chippenham parkrun an average of 5.7 times meaning we have timed 49,773 parkruns across our finish line.

Now there’s a statistic …. Could we celebrate our 50,000th coming over the line today?
Of course we could!

Maisie Lewendon who usually runs at Royal Tunbridge Wells parkrun was in fact our 50,000th finisher and was delighted to win the box of chocolates as she finished!

Congratulations to Sarah Barker who became our 3rd ‘home’ Chippenham parkrunner to run her 250th parkrun!
Since discovering parkrun tourism and with Melksham parkrun opening close to her in 2017, we still enjoy Sarah’s company at Chippenham on special occasions. She has completed 132 parkruns at Chippenham, volunteered 41 times and visited 39 different locations!

Running his 760th parkrun at Chippenham parkrun was Darren Wood, this is the most parkruns run by anyone in the world …. Amazing!

From there to the firsts … we welcomed The Gough’s Gallopers who graduated their 10week Couch to 5k programme with us – they were some of the 31 First Timers, of which 13 were completing their first ever parkrun.

We welcomed tourists from Medina, IOW; Boston, Lincolnshire; Cheltenham; Birkenhead; Brueton; Chipping Sodbury; Wales; Devon; Andover.

Thankyou to the 35 volunteers today including our 11 fantastic pacers.

Todays tutu parkrun is dedicated to the memory of Helen Stevens. We welcomed Helens friends and family who were taking part today. Helen began running here in September 2014 but in 2017 she was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. In May of 2018 she contacted me because she felt guilty for not being able to volunteer for a while. She told me that the reason for this was because  she had set herself a goal to achieve 60 parkruns by her 60th birthday. At that point she had only completed 29 parkruns, she told me that she knew it would be a challenge and would leave little room for movement and certainly would not allow for any cancellations due to bad weather! She executed her plan to perfection, she was driven and determined to achieve her goal and so on her 60th birthday (19th January 2019) she completed her 60th parkrun and celebrated her achievement in true runners style - with plenty of cake. Sadly Helen passed away a few weeks later.

The rain finally gave up the ghost and we had a beautiful cold, crisp, bright and sunny winters day. By 08:50 the park was already starting to look full, by the time the brief was complete there was no space on the grass. Wherever you looked there was a sea of Santas, flanked by Elves, a Fairy, Rudolph, a penguin, the nativity and a load of other characters.

Christmas is a time for family and it was wonderful to spend the morning with our parkrun family. It was a breathtakingly fabulous record breaking turnout with 492 leaving their Christmas dinner to cook itself whilst they came into the park to run, jog and walk the course. There were 21 brand spanking new first timers to parkrun and 93 tourists from other parkruns. Well done to the 35 people who recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 63 different clubs took part.

It feels like eveyone has saved up their milestone credits to spend today! Congratulations to each and every one of the following who achieved official milestones:
100 - Isaac Adamczuk
100 - Neil Cutler
100 - Eleanor Vesey-Thompson
100 - Rachel Duffett
50 - India Ibbotson
50 - Lindsey Neale
50 - Julia Louise Glencross
50 - Ben Cruickshank
50 - Suzanne Thompson

The day parkrun had a Water Feature!

In the 5 and a half years that we have been holding Chippenham parkrun we have never had a water feature - a few puddles? Yes, but a water feature? No! With all of the rain we have had and the high rolling river it was only a matter of time until a little bit of water started to spill out onto the path. Today was that day! This week I was volunteering as a marshal at a new marshal point....yes you have guessed it the water feature! The water was ankle deep for me and my job was to warn people about it and point them in the direction of a detour if they didn't want to get their tootsies wet! I saw a range of techniques being deployed, most people wanted to avoid the water altogether, there were high knees, long jumps, piggy backs but the most efficient method to me seemed to be the head held high and just run through! I had more fun watching than I really should have done! Here are some of my favourite pictures from today. If you want to have a real chuckle, click on the link to the photos below;

This week 198 people ran, jogged and walked the course. We welcomed another 13 people to the world of parkrun and we welcomed 16 visitors from other parkruns (Didcot, Melksham, Skipton, Felixstowe and Clare Park). Again the terrain was poor with only 3 runners recording new Personal Bests. Representatives of 26 different clubs took part.

Congratulations to Steph Brazier for achieving her 50th parkrun milestone. Steph started running here in December 2016 and has completed 29 of the 50 here at Chippenham.

It feels like it has been raining non-stop for weeks, the river is running high but a few(!) drops of rain did not deter 155 from getting out of their beds and tumbling into the park to run, jog and walk the course. Rather unusually we had no visitors from other parkruns but we did have 13 brand spanking new first timers to parkrun. The muddy meadow being slightly waterlogged was responsible for only 4 runners recording a new Personal Best. Representatives of 21 different clubs took part.

This weeks report comes to you courtesy of Steve Pomfret who was a pacer this week.

78918407_2686761968028686_8399321684250722304_n

A very pleasant, mild and dry, winter’s morning saw 183 runners join us. Chris Hunt welcomed 3 people running their first ever parkrun, and 17 visitors taking part in their first Chippenham parkrun. On tourist came from  Australia. Runners were made aware of some mud in the second field, but overall the course was looking good, and it was a great morning for a parkrun.

This being the first Saturday of the month meant pacers were running to assist other parkrunners, maybe looking for a PB. Thanks to Julia Maddocks who organises the pacers each month, and thanks to all the volunteers who gave it a go and filled the majority of the blue pacer’s bibs.

Pacing isn’t as daunting as it sounds – although to me it’s still a bit more ‘art than science’. But it is great fun, and there is a real feel good about helping other parkrunners. If you want to get even more involved in the ‘family’ that is Chippenham parkrun, why not give pacing a go. You don’t need to be an elite athlete, just choose a time you can comfortably achieve, keep one eye on the time, and the other on the pacer in front who is running one minute faster than you!

This week 19 people achieved a Personal Best.

Congratulations to this week's milestone, Sebastian COPPING  who celebrated his 10th parkrun.
