Cleethorpes Athletic Club Takeover

DSC_1125

.

Today was the turn of the local athletic club to participate in a parkrun "takeover", so welcome to all members of Cleethorpes Athletic Club. This takeover was organised by Paul Griffiths (Pud) with members filling all the volunteer positions and many ran the course in club colours.  Not that any of them are strangers to the Country Park with the club topping the leader board with 200 individual members clocking 3660 parkruns!

.

The Cleethorpes AC members volunteering today were: Arthur JUSTICE  •  Ben EDWARDS  •  Charlotte GRIFFITHS  •  Chris TWEEDY  •  Craig EDWARDS  •  Daniel GELDER  •  Darren ROWE  •  Dave SMITH  •  David COLEMAN  •  Evie GELDER  •  Evie GRIFFITHS  •  Frank COLEMAN  •  Hannah SMITH  •  Helen KNIGHTS  •  Jacob EDWARDS  •  Jo BARNSLEY  •  Maisie GRIFFITHS  •  Mark BARNSLEY  •  Max GARTON  •  Melanie PORTLOCK  •  Natalie JUSTICE  •  Nicola SMITH  •  Paul GRIFFITHS  •  Ronnie GIBSON  •  Samantha JENSEN-MARTIN  •  Sarah COLEMAN  •  Sarah EDWARDS  •  Sophie BROWN  •  Tabitha JUSTICE.

Today also proved that the members are not bad at baking with some delicious cakes on offer for lucky parkrunners at the end.  Charlotte Griffiths, Helen Knights, Natalie Justice, Nicola, Lucy and Hannah Smith were just a few of the members showcasing their signature bakes.

.

No rest for Jane Hill and Fiona Jex after coming 2nd and 3rd lady finishers, it was straight to cake duties.

.

Cleethorpes AC caters for all age groups from seven years old and they also run a successful Momentum course for complete beginners from zero distance to 5k … perfect for parkrun!

The club runs a beginners and improvers night for road runners.  This takes place at the Cleethorpes Leisure Centre on Tuesday and Friday nights at 6pm. This group is open to anyone who is looking to start running or to improve on their running and club members are on hand to provide new runners with support and advice on training.

SPLISH SPLASH AT THE CLEETHORPES DASH

With over 60 parkruns countrywide being cancelled because of waterlogged ground surface, including our sister parkrun at Market Rasen, and the Peter Pan in Hull, it was up to Cleethorpes to fly the parkrun flag; though with a trace of ice on the bridges it was still touch and go whether ours's was on or not. After a course check by Lesley Parry and a double-check from, Rob Atkinson - his 50th stint as Run Director - the course was declared safe and the 280th Cleethorpes parkrun was ready for parkrunners.

Though the attendance was up on the corresponding event in 2018 there were less than 200 at the Country Park, when perhaps because of cancellations more runners would have been expected; never mind, the 192 participants certainly enjoyed themselves, well judging by the shrieks of delight (I think it was delight) at the water feature - 200m into the course!

parkrun stalwart, Rob Atkinson, on his 50th stint as Run Director, only the second RD after Steven Green to reach 50. Rob has also volunteered in so many other parkrun positions that I can say in all sincerity that without him the Cleethorpes parkrun would not be the successful parkrun that it is today.

With the England World Cup final match in Japan due to start at 9am all pre-run talk was on how many would run this morning's Cleethorpes parkrun, which as we all know starts at 9 am; well the answer was 134, about 30 down on our average but about 100 down on what we usually attract to the Country Park at this time of the year.

Thirteen of you were pleased you ran as you came away with a personal best for the distance with Rhonnida Challinor in her 27th parkrun knocking a massive 84 seconds off her previous time to record 29.45. Penny Dixon, in the JW10 category, ran yet another PB, her 10th in only 17 outings, and this includes a consecutive sequence of seven! Penny stopped the watch this morning in 32.18 - well-done Penny!

A big parkrun congratulations this morning to Maureen Hunter (above) and Kristin Hoset (below) on achieving their 100th and 50th parkrun respectively.

As ever parkrunner knows this is not just about accumulating runs but also contributing to the event by volunteering - no volunteers no event - Maureen with 100 runs has volunteered 13 times and Kristin, with 50 runs, has volunteered seven times.

The new water feature added to the Country Park this week. Rumour has it that the barriers should be installed for next week ready for the new parkrun steeplechase!

.

With a number of events around the country being cancelled due to the weather, it was a soggy start to the weekend for 109 intrepid parkrunners at Cleethorpes.  This was the lowest turnout of runners we've had at Cleethorpes since 72 ran on 17 March 2018.  However, a bit of rain was not enough to dampen spirits and the park was full of smiles and laughter as runners, joggers and walkers splashed their way around the course, particularly enjoying the new water feature!

.

DSC_0976

A little bit of rain won't put these parkrunners off their weekly fix!

.

An extra big thank you must go to all the super volunteers who stood out in the pouring rain so that this week's event could take place!  I hope you've now all dried off and warmed up.  Overseeing the event was Run Director, Sean Clark, who notched up his 15th stint in the role today!

 .

DSC_0914

Run Director, Sean Clark, doing his best not to slip off the rock during his speech!

.

Remember that parkrun only takes place because of the volunteers who help to run the event.  We are lucky in Cleethorpes to have a lot of fantastic regular volunteers but lets not just rely on them.  There are weeks they cannot make it and the event struggles for helpers.  If you run regularly at Cleethorpes, please consider helping out every now and then.  All the roles are easy to pick up and full training is given by the Volunteer Co-ordinator.  Email cleethorpeshelpers@parkrun.com to get involved.

Milestones

Two parkrunners celebrated their 100th runs at Cleethorpes today.  Regular Cleethorpes runner Brynnen Massey has completed 76 of his parkruns at the Country Park.  He has also run 3 of his parkruns in Australia.   Brynnen first ran in Cleethorpes in 2015 and his PB of 20:46 is from that year.  His highest age grade score of 74.40% was recorded in 2016 and he has volunteered on 4 occasions.

.

.

Georgina Rhodes also celebrated her 100th parkrun today.  She usually runs at Scunthorpe but chose to visit Cleethorpes to achieve her milestone.  Georgina has run at Cleethorpes 5 times and has completed other parkruns up and down the country.  Georgina has also volunteered on 4 occasions.

Paul Marchant after his 150th parkrun!

.

Paul Marchant completed his 150th parkrun today.  Although not an official parkrun milestone, it's a great achievement and deserves a mention.  Paul has been a regular at Cleethorpes since 2016.  He has helped out on 12 occasions and has a PB of 22:17 which he ran in 2018.  Paul has done 147 of his runs at Cleethorpes and also completed Peterborough and Peckham Rye parkruns.

.

There were 16 first timers to Cleethorpes today.  8 of these ran their first ever parkrun!  There was a sea of people in orange Run4Fun t-shirts and some of these were running their first 5k following the couch to 5k programme.  We also had tourists from Sheffield, Kendal and Kettering.  Well done to you all and we hope to see you at Cleethorpes parkrun again soon.

Park Lane closed on Saturday

We've been told that it's very unlikely that the car park will be available on Saturday, and that the main access road, Park Lane will be closed all day for resurfacing.

Can we take this opportunity to encourage you to walk or ride, or use Public transport, the park is a short distance from stops for the 7 and 8 buses, and also not far from the Premier Inn, where buses 9 and 10 stop.

There is plenty of parking around the Premier Inn and it's only a short walk down the Beck from there, or park for free at Tesco and enjoy about a mile's warm-up jog or walk to the start.

Alternatively, if you're early enough, you might find some on-street parking at Bedford Road (off North Sea Lane) or Links Road (off Chichester Road)

See the satellite maps below for more information.
