Cleethorpes parkrun 294

DSC_0009

This week's parkrun was brought to you by Run Director Steve Green and 26 other volunteers!

.

The threat of Storm Dennis wasn't enough to stop 151 keen parkrunners from coming down to the Country Park for their weekly run/jog/walk.  Although blustery, the conditions were not as bad as it was feared they might be and unlike lots of other events around the country, we were able to go ahead.

Some of this week's Hi-Viz Heroes!

.

The event was, of course, only able to go ahead due to the fabulous volunteers who gave up just over an hour of their time to make sure others could enjoy their run.  So a big thank you to Barbara BELL  •  Ben EDWARDS  •  Brian HOSTAD  •  Chris ECCLESTONE  •  Cynthia COMMONS  •  Daniel GELDER  •  Emily SMITH  •  Fiona SHADLOCK  •  Frank RIMMER  •  Hania OBAID  •  Helen ROWE  •  Hugo WEBSTER  •  Jacob DISHMAN  •  James HUTSON  •  Jason NEILSON  •  John BAILEY  •  Joshua ECCLESTONE  •  Louise DISHMAN  •  Maureen HUNTER  •  Max GARTON  •  Pam BENDLE  •  Rita LINFORD  •  Sanaya KURUKULAARACHCHI  •  Sarah EDWARDS  •  Steven GREEN  •  Steven HOLMES  •  Susan GREEN.

First timers briefing being delivered by James Hutson. This is a volunteering role that can be done as well as running if you really can't bear to miss your parkrun.

 .

Volunteering at parkrun is rewarding and fun.  It's great to be able to give something back to the event that we all enjoy every week.  Please consider helping out if you regularly take part in parkrun.  All the roles are easy to do and you will be shown what to do by the Volunteer Co-ordinator.  There are also some roles you can do and still run!  Email cleethorpeshelpers@parkrun.com to get involved.

Milestones

DSC_0254

Evie Griffiths, first female finisher on her 50th parkrun!

A few parkrunners achieved milestones this week.  Evie Griffiths not only ran her 50th parkrun but was also first female finisher!  Evie started parkrun in 2015 when she ran 37:19.  This week she ran 21:52!  She has a PB of 21:20 which she ran last week.  Evie is a member of Cleethorpes Athletics Club and is improving massively since being coached by Jo Evans.  Evie will soon be representing Humberside in the Inter Counties Cross Country  Championships and Humberside Schools at the English Schools Cross Country Championships in Liverpool!  Evie has also volunteered at parkrun on 9 occasions which is a great run to volunteer ratio.  She has taken part in 8 different parkruns including Devon, the Isle of Wight and Florida!  Well done Evie!

.

DSC_0247

Lee Smith after his 100th parkrun!

.

Another milestone achieved today was 100 parkruns by Lee Smith.  Lee started to run parkrun in October 2014 and has completed all of his runs at Cleethorpes.  He has a PB of 19:07 which he ran in August 2019.  Lee says he has been concentrating on achieving his 100 milestone and now he has done this he plans to volunteer more.  It's great to hear that someone wants to put something back into the event they love.  No volunteers = no parkrun.

Other milestones this week were Oliver Wardman who completed his 50th run.  Oliver has only started running at Cleethorpes this year and his other 46 runs have been at Whitstable.  Jack Pearson achieved the junior milestone of 10 parkruns.  Well done to all of our milerstoners!

.

PB Corner

Despite the blustery conditions 19 of you beat the beginnings of Storm Dennis to achieve a Personal Best today!  Well done to you all!

New to the park

Only 8 first timers joined us this week which is lower than usual.  Maybe the weather forecast put some people off?  For some, this was their first ever parkrun and for others they were visitors from other events.  This week we had parkrun tourists from Sunderland, Hertfordshire and North Wales.  Welcome to Cleethorpes parkrun!  We hope you enjoyed the event and hope to see you with us again soon.

When looking at these results I noticed an age category record that was broken a few weeks ago.  Krystyna Shepherd runs in the VW 75-79 age category and on 25 January 2020 set a new record by running 41:27!  Well done Krystyna!

Country Park parkrun 292

A very cold Cleethorpes Country Park on the first day of February was certainly not the place to be if anyone was after a parkrun PB, what with a 45 mph gale blowing across the lake; but that is just what happened and an amazing 24 of you recorded a personal best! A full list is shown in this report but perhaps a quick mention of Sam Colbeck and Angela Smith, both on their 29th parkrun, who recorded a PB, as did Stephanie Capindale on her 23rd. Well done one and all.

P1590864.

The event was made possible by 30 volunteers: Steven HOLMES • Sarah EDWARDS • Colin WRIGHT • Bridget BENTON • Andy BOYD • Ben EDWARDS • Charles ANDERSON • Chris ECCLESTONE • Mark HINKLEY • Stacey NEEDHAM • John BIRCH • James HUTSON • Maureen HUNTER • Lawrence WOULFE-FLANAGAN • Joshua ECCLESTONE • Edward TREACHER • William TREACHER • Cynthia COMMONS • Barbara BELL • Helen ROWE • Paul CHATTERTON • Hugo WEBSTER • Keith FLINT • Kaye BORRELL • Alan CHAPMAN • Max GARTON • Saffat HOSSAIN • Sanaya KURUKULAARACHCHI • Hania OBAID • Emily SMITH

Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award Scheme.

This week we have seven volunteers from the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award scheme putting their time and effort into supporting Cleethorpes parkrun. So perhaps now is the time to give Emily Smith, Max Garton, Saffat Hossain, Sanaya Kurukulaarachchi, Hania Obaio, Hugo Webster and parkrun regular Ben Edwards a name check. In fact, today is Ben's 22nd time at parkrun as a volunteer but his first as a DoE volunteer: oh, he has also run the event 42 times!

Emily and Max are working towards the gold award, Saffat, the silver, Sanaya, Hugo and Ben bronze. So on behalf of all at parkrun can I say a big thank you to the lads and lasses that are participating in this award with a special mention to Max who has supported the event in wind, rain, frost and a little bit of sun!

The youth charity the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award gives young people aged 14-24 the chance to develop skills, fulfill their potential and have a brighter future. The Award has four sections - Volunteering, Physical, Skills and an Expedition. There are three progressive levels of DofE programmes which, when completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

The DofE partnership with parkrun is of great mutual benefit whereby parkrun events get regular helpers for many weeks at a time, and the DofE participants get to develop skills and contribute towards their local community.

Wickens family day out. Chase, 12 today, was asked where he would like to go on his special day and he said CLEETHORPES! Correct answer! And as you can see Chase along with his sister, Chloe-Faith, Mum, Karen and dad Christian are mighty happy to be in CLEETHORPES!

Ben Edwards on his Duke of Edinburgh parkrun debut - he has run parkrun 42 times - with run reporter mum Sarah, on this her 80th volunteer stint, she has also run 67 times!

Since Sarah is usually reporting on other parkrunners achievements perhaps it would be nice to mention one of her athletic achievements: she is the current Humberside County Champion at 10.000m and since we are on the subject perhaps we should also mention that Ben was the 2019 Humberside XC U13 County Champion.

The run only happened today because of 29 fantastic volunteers who gave up an hour of their time to support the event.  We are lucky at Cleethorpes that we have a lot of people who volunteer and never run and we have a great group of runners who regularly volunteer.  However, there are lots of spaces left on the volunteer rota for the next few weeks.  If you run regularly please give volunteering a go occasionally.  All the roles are easy and you will be shown what to do by the Volunteer Co-ordinator.  It's rewarding to put something back into parkrun and see the event from a different perspective.  Email cleethorpeshelpers@parkrun.com to let us know when you can help.

There were a few people achieving milestone runs today including 50, 100, 150 and 200!  Those who ran the official parkrun milestones of 50 and 100 will now be able to claim their free t-shirt!  Don't forget that there is also a volunteering milestone t-shirt for those who have helped out 25 times!

Stacey Needham is a familiar face to Cleethorpes parkrun.  Although not an official parkrun milestone, Stacey today ran her 150th run and deserves a mention because of the input she has into the event.  Stacey first ran at Cleethorpes in May 2016 and since then has not only run 150 times but helped out on more than 40 occasions, taking on every role including Run Director.  Well done Stacey!

Cleethorpes parkrun 288

.
Well, I hope you all enjoyed the first parkrun of the new decade and pray you will all be with us at the start of the next decade!

RUNNING BOOM!

I was just looking back to an old race report of mine in the Grimsby Telegraph in 1998 in which I was bemoaning the fact that numbers in local races had dwindled to such a point that it might not be viable to put them on anymore; yet here we are in 2020 in the middle of a running boom, with a 650 race entry for Wednesday's New Year Day 10K; nearly 300 at the Country Park the previous Saturday and an amazing turn out of 267 runners on Christmas Day! Tomorrow will see the Humberside Cross Country Championships in Weelsby Woods and the Cleethorpes Prom 5K on Tuesday night: a running boom indeed!

To my mind this has all happened because of parkrun, and speaking local this has happened gradual, with the first six months of Cleethorpes parkrun attracting an average attendance of 80 and here we are in 2020 with our average doubling that!

So many thanks to the team that had the foresight to start up the Cleethorpes parkrun back in May 2014; because of this foresight there are now many that have now taken up this activity, with an improvement to their health and well being, something that might not have happened without that first parkrun at the Country Park.

Just a few of today's parkrunners wearing the Cleethorpes New Year Day 10K T-Shirt. Eagle-eyed parkrunners might just spot it is our very own parkrun reporter, Sarah Edwards, doing the re-enactment of the iconic album cover, London Calling, recorded by the punk band The Clash. Sarah is the parkrun reporter next week and if you bring a biro I'm sure she will sign your T-Shirt.

In sunny but bitterly cold conditions this week's Run Director, Darren Rowe, set off the intrepid 234 parkrunners on their weekly circuit of the Lake and despite the strong wind blowing 22 managed to record a parkrun PB!

RUN REPORT & PHOTO SNAPS:

COLIN WRIGHT.

SARAH EDWARDS WILL BE YOUR REPORTER NEXT WEEK.

P1580740

Ready for 4th January?

We've not got an abundance of marshalls, but we've got as many as we need. Positions are below.

2020-01-03_15-08-35

If you're one of the 18 high-vis heroes who have volunteered tomorrow so we can all have a run, then if you can be at the park by about 8.30 for training and instruction, then that would be awesome.

If you're visiting our parkrun for the first time tomorrow, Michael has kindly offered to explain everything to you. Briefing for first-timers and tourists will be at 8.50.

Remember, we have a toilet, but only one and it can get busy right before the off, so we'd suggest you do your doings before you leave home.

See you tomorrow for more fun in the park, for the first parkrun of the decade.
