parkrun 339 8th February

The extreme weather stayed away on Saturday morning to allow parkrun No.339 to take place at the fantastic National Trust Clumber Park.

Amanda Lilliman spoke at the Run Director's briefing to tell us all about CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and the Bethany Mycroft Memorial Fund, a very strong and emotional story... They also brought some amazing cakes which were very well received and devoured by everyone...

parkrun 338 1st February

This morning 338 of you set off to complete our lovely route in Clumber Park, and 24 willing volunteers made sure you were safe and your times and positions were recorded and processed.

1-IMG_20200201_090412

Hopefully you were all taking part in the 'Five in February' and will be part of that elite group of people who will be the first to walk, jog, run or volunteer at five Clumber parkruns in February?  This has never been possible before, because there haven't been five Saturdays in February since 1992, and if you miss out, there won't be another opportunity until 2048!  We'll do something special on the fifth week, February 29th, so if you intend to complete the 'Five in February' at Clumber parkrun, watch this space!

Geoffrey CLARKE was the funnel manager today, and also the 'flag waver' at the gatepost near the start.  It takes nerves of steel to stand your ground as hundreds of people hurtle towards you.  For safety reasons, we always ask the flag waver to stand behind the post - be safe and look where you are going!

Lee SZYPUSZ was our first finisher today in a PB time of 18:46.  Lee has been running at Clumber on and off since our parkrun started in 2013, initially recording a time of 23:51.  Today was his 50th run at Clumber and his 89th overall.  Making her parkrun debut today and the first female to finish was Vicky HILL-JONES, who recorded a time of 20:59 - what a great start.

Today we had visitors from Norfolk, Darlington, Derby and Leeds - to name a few. Ian and Tracy STRONG and Paul and Michelle GREEN were visiting from Scunthorpe.  Ian was celebrating both his first ever run in Clumber and successfully completing 'dry January'.

4-IMG_20200201_093754

There are various running challenges that have been initiated by parkrunners around the country.  Today Samantha TINSDALE, Beverley MILLER, Hilary LUND and Michelle HANCOCKS from Leeds bagged a 'C' in the alphabet challenge, ticked a National Trust venue off their list and fulfilled their aim to run at a different parkrun, which they endeavour to do on the first Saturday of the month.  Well done ladies!

5-IMG_20200201_094307-001

Next week we will be joined by a small team from CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).  Regular Clumber parkrunner Jill BRANCH has close links with the 'Bethany Mycroft Memorial Fund' and we are very grateful to her for arranging for them to come along to inform everyone about heart screening locally for young people aged 14 to 35.  Even if you don't live in Derbyshire (we are very close to the Derbyshire border here), you can still benefit from the service they offer.  They will be bringing along information, dedicated and experienced people to chat with and .....cakes (for a small donation) so please go along and support their work and see how they may be able to benefit you or a family member or friend.

parkrun 337 25th January

Everyone helped in a mind reading exercise, we celebrated Sallys 250th parkrun volunteering, we had some really nice milestones and there was cake...........

What a busy morning, we started by reading Sallys mind to discover that this week was her 250th parkrun volunteering event! Now thats a lot of volunteering over the years. Heres a picture of when parkrun first started at Clumber, we were lucky to get into double figures and Sally was there from the start.

Sally was genuinely surprised and didn't know our cunning plan, here she is with her cake (which she shared with everyone) and a lovely orchid in parkrun colours.

We were so focussed on Sally that we don't have many photos of anything else this week!

It was Judith Satchells 250th parkrun which is amazing! She brought chocolates for everyone too. Thank you Judith!

It was a very special parkrun for Andrew Crossland this week. It was his 50th parkrun which he ran in memory of his father, Fred Crossland. His Dad ran his 50th parkrun last year but tragically died of Cancer before he had chance to wear his 50 shirt. Today Andrew ran in his Dads shirt.

Our first two home today were Ben Harris from Retford AC and Charlie Hanson from Lincoln Wellington AC, here they are looking very pleased with their times (or maybe they were pleased to be first back for Cake)

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_3d72

We had lots of first time parkrunners today and we gave them a big welcome, we also had visitors from Market Rasen, Burnley, Reading, Lincoln And Ireland!. Hope you all enjoyed Clumber parkrun.

Heres a picture of Sally with Tony Jenks, who was Clumbers first ever Event Director, lots of people made the effort to come along to celebrate Sallys Achievement.

I asked Sally if she had any advice for anyone who would like to achieve 250 volunteering events and get Cake and flowers and she said "It all starts with the first time and the more you do the more you enjoy it. The time flies and before you know it you have a cake!" (Sally didn't actually say that, I made it up but its what she would have said had I asked her that question I'm sure...)

If you would like to find out how much fun it is to volunteer then drop us an email and pop let us know you would like to join in the fun!

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_3d6c

I wasn't sure if we had enough pictures of Sally and the cake so heres one more!

Thats it for this week, have fun, go for a run and we'll see you bright and early next Saturday DFYB

Brought to you this week by the funny one!

parkrun 336 18th January

It was a pleasure to be in Clumber Park this Saturday, with blue skies and sunshine making a welcome change from the drab weather of recent weeks.  However, the low temperature did mean there were some icy puddles on parts of the course.  Numbers were over 400 for the fourth parkrun in a row and 22 brilliant volunteers ensured everything ran smoothly. The parking was very busy and the start was delayed by a few minutes to allow everyone time to get to the event field.  To avoid the last minute rush, please arrive earlier than normal so we can start on time.

Emily, one of our junior volunteers, was happy to take responsibility for timekeeping, which she did with 100% accuracy.3-IMG_20200118_093316

Mark & Christine handed out the finish tokens - all of which were returned (hurrah).

2-IMG_20200118_093244

Richard was also a timekeeper and Sam was the number checker.  You may have wondered why you sometimes get asked for your name as you stagger along the finish funnel gasping for breath.  This is because the number checker is responsible for making spot checks so that discrepancies that may arise between the timer and the tokens that are given out are recorded.

Jon FOX normally runs at Colwick, but this week he made his first visit to Clumber and lead everyone home in a time of 17:28.

1-IMG_20200118_092902

We had visitors from around the UK, including Ruth and Ryan Mewis.  Ruth is the Co-Event Director at Lancaster parkrun and she said how much she'd enjoyed her first visit to Clumber parkrun and was very envious that our volunteers had their own hut - complete with kettle and microwave!

6-IMG_20200118_093552

There was a lot of cake today to celebrate various milestones. Taking part at Clumber today, David MICHIE and Martha HAZLEHURST joined the 50 Club.  Donna FARMER, Gordon ATKINSON and Jane RIDDELL all joined the 100 Club and although not an official milestone,  Julian HILL completed his 200th parkrun. Proudly wearing her '100' sash, Donna completed the route as a tail walker today, along with Clare and Emily FEE.

8-IMG_20200118_100739

Indulging in a bit of parkrun tourism this week, one of our Run Directors Mark MANLEY celebrated his 100th run at Whinlatter Forest in the Lake District.  He said the views were stunning, but as Whinlatter is the UK parkrun with the most elevation and is rated in the top three most difficult, he'll be glad to get back to the flat course at Clumber!

The trolley was overflowing with discarded coats, jackets, tops, hats and gloves this week.  Please remember to collect your items before you go home. If you do leave anything, please get in touch as soon as possible so we can put your things to one side.

5-IMG_20200118_093341There are lots of volunteer opportunities through February, so if you're able to help out please check out the future roster and let us know which role you'd like to undertake.  Random fact - there are over 7000 runners registered to Clumber parkrun, yet less than 10% of these have ever volunteered.  That's a lot of people who are missing out on the most rewarding aspect of parkrun.
