Christmas & New Year parkrun arrangements

On Saturday 24th December, Christmas Eve, we will be holding our pre-Christmas "party" parkrun when you are invited to dress up or down in whatever festive costume takes your fancy. Afterwards there will be Mulled Wine and Mince Pies (and soft drinks). St Helena Hospice Volunteers will also be present to relief you of any spare cash you might have, and any donations you make will be very gratefully received by them for the Hospice.
On Christmas Day we will be running our parkrun at the normal time of 09:00 - parkrun "light" - that is there will be minimal signage out and only a couple of marshals so make sure you know the route (especially if you might be at the front of the field!!).
On New Years Eve - 31st December we will be running our normal Saturday parkrun at 0900.
New Year's Day is the only day when you are allowed to run two parkruns - so to accommodate those who would like to try this, parkun on New Year's Day will be at 10:30 and will again be parkrun "light" as on Christmas Day.
For your information, we know that Ipswich will be doing their New Years day parkrun at 08:30 which will give you plenty of time to get back for ours at 1030.

We are especially grateful to all the volunteers who will be helping over the festive period - without them we wouldn't have a parkrun on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

27th August parkrun – #IAMTEAMGB

This coming Saturday (27th August) we are taking part in the Join In, ‪#‎IAMTEAMGB‬, ITV and National Lottery funded day of Sport to celebrate the success of our Olympics - Britain's best ever result.

Please do all you can to encourage someone who has not been to parkrun before to come along and try it (remember to get them to register and print off their barcode (www.parkrun.org.uk/register) and be there by 0845 for first timers briefing.

It will also be a pacer run as Running Colchester will be providing the Volunteers and pacers for the day.

There will be cakes and drinks available afterwards, so if you'd like to bring some cakes along, I am sure the runners would be very grateful!!

We will also be raising money towards parkrun's official charity - Alzheimer's Research UK (ARUK). John, our Event Director is running in the ARUK parkrun team at the Great North Run on 11th September and it would be great to help him towards raising his target of £1,000 for this very worthwhile charity - so don't forget to bring some money.....please!

Let's have a really big turnout for this special day and celebrate with #IAMTEAMGB

Saturday 11th June parkrun -IMPORTANT

Next Saturday 11th June 2016 we are at Mill Road Sports Ground and Rugby Club and NOT at Castle Park. A nice flat course (what a change!) all on grass - your only chance this year. Don't forget and turn up at Castle Park!!! Parking is free too. See you there.............we hope!

Post code is  CO4 5JF  for your Sat Nav, if visiting.

Drinking water at our parkrun

Now that numbers at our parkrun are regularly exceeding 300, it is becoming increasingly expensive and environmentally unfriendly to be offering disposable plastic cups and drinking water at parkrun. We also regularly have to clear up some 20 - 30 used cups each week. There are also Health and Safety Issues involved in providing drinking water out of large containers.
We have therefore decided that in future we will not be providing water at parkrun. Please therefore bring your own from now on. Alternatively drinks are available in the adjacent café immediately after your run.

Stoke Gifford parkrun

You may like to see the press release issued by Tom WIlliams, worldwide Operating Officer for parkrun about the dreadful decision of Stoke Gifford Parish Council to impose a charge on parkrun (by a majority of 5 to 4 with 2 abstentions). http://www.parkrun.org.uk/news/2016/04/12/parkrun-reaction-to-stoke-gifford-parish-council-decision/

Our 3rd birthday – 2nd April

It'll soon be 2nd April and our 3rd birthday- and our 157th parkrun! Let's make it really special - encourage as many of your friends to come along - especially if they have been to our parkrun before! A huge turnout is what we want!!

Also, we'd like lots and lots of cakes (and if anyone would like to make us a birthday cake we'd be delighted - just let us know in advance about that one - otherwise just bring along your cakes on the day). We'll have coffee, tea and squash as well.

All money raised will go towards our defibrillator - and if you want to donate - please go to our web page - "more" tab, then "about us" and click on the donate button. Remember to add a comment "a 100% for defibrillator" - though it won't show as that on the website we have been assured we will get it all back!

FANCY DRESS - if you want - comedy, april fool, clown, circus type themes.

AND a surprise to the route itself - wait and see- but come along or you'll miss this "one-off" special.

Raising funds for a defibrillator

As announced at last week's parkrun, we are commencing fund raising to purchase a defibrillator. We consider it is essential for us to obtain this potentially life saving piece of equipment so as we have it available in case of a medical emergency. At present, there is no AED close or available enough for us to have access to on a Saturday morning.
The intention is that if we can raise sufficient funds, then it will be permanently located in the Park Warden's office so available for use throughout the week in the event of an emergency, but during parkrun would be held at the Bandstand. So we will be doing our bit for the general community as well.
The cost of a suitable AED will probably be in the region of £800 - £1100 and a secure lockable cabinet to house it in will cost about £250.
Many parkruns have now raised the money and purchased defibrillators.
So if you would like to donate, please follow the instructions below.
Go www.parkrun.org.uk/colchestercastle and click the tab at the top right hand side marked "more". Click "about us". Scroll down the page, and you will see "Donate to parkrun". Click on this and follow the instructions. If you state that "100% for CCp defibrillator" parkrun HQ will not deduct their usual 15% (which normally goes to supporting the start up costs of new parkruns) so we will get the full amount of your donation.
Thank you all!

Colchester junior parkrun

Plans for a Colchester junior parkrun are progressing and a meeting of all interested volunteers will be held immediately after the completion of Saturday's (16th) parkrun In the Warden's meeting room (meet at the Bandstand). It is very important that if you wish a junior parkrun to go ahead, you attend this meeting which hopefully will only last approximately 30 minutes. We have the finance to start the run, we just now need to build a Core Volunteer team. All will be explained on Saturday.
