Crystal Palace parkrun 5th March 2016

Today I need to start my run report with an apology. As it is the first Saturday of the month Crystal Palace Fun Runners (CPFR) were acting as pacers. I agreed to pace at 33 mins. Despite being at book club last night (a 1:00am finish and far too much red wine) I felt quite chipper.

Last time I paced no one spoke to me and I crossed the finish line alone but only six seconds slower than I had intended. This time two people spoke to me almost immediately: Natalie Bedford and Hayley Ehrich.  They were both going to try and get a 33 min finish. We got off to a flying start, in fact so flying I was a bit worried and we slowed down, then sped up, then slowed down and so on for the whole route.  In the end instead of 33 mins we did it in 34:23. So apologies to anyone who was aiming for 33 mins.......

The lesson I have learned is I shall stop speaking to anyone when I'm trying to pace and concentrate on the task in hand, so much for multi tasking!

It may also have been just poor parkrun karma.  As I passed Tom Wilson I told him to make more of an effort - not at all in keeping with the encouraging spirit of parkrun. And Tom was running for the first time since running the Seville marathon two weeks ago, so my comment was particularly harsh.

Funnily enough when we were in the cafe afterwards lots of people said how hard they had found it today. It was so cold and although, true to form, it didn't rain, it felt as if it would start any minute.  But the cold didn't deter us as 205 of us lined up waiting for the monsters to start us off. For 29 people this was their first time at Crystal Palace parkrun. Eleven of them had never run a parkrun before - welcome to a fabulous addiction! Eighteen of our first timers were tourists, including the aforementioned Hayley Ehrich.

Thirty seven people achieved a PB today, well done to you all. One of them was Tom Boswell who was first finisher in an amazing 17:29. CPFR weren't pacing him and in fact he sprinted past Hayley, Natalie and me as we passed the finish line at the end of our first lap. Tom has run 17 of his 19 parkruns at Crystal Palace and in all but four of them been either first or second finisher.  Sadly, 23 people were logged as 'unknown'. So I can't tell you whether they were tourists, first timers and/or achieved PBs. #DFYB. Jackye Greenhill ran her 50th parkrun today. She ran her first parkrun in May 2012 and has a PB of 28:35.  We had no other milestone runners today.

Next week there will not be a parkrun at Crystal Palace, it's the Bromley Schools Cross Country instead, so do turn up if you're up for an incredibly fast 5K and you're a student at a Bromley school.  Otherwise there are, of course, plenty of opportunities for a bit of tourism. Dulwich is a flat three laps of the park, Brockwell Pk seems to have a lot of uphill with no down, Wimbledon is like a cross country, flat and through lots of woods.

Finally, tokens 85 and 141 appeared to continue to run and so if you've got them please do bring them back the week after next.
