Run Report Event 43

It was a really sunny morning for junior parkrun today although quite slippy from last night's down pour of rain. It was my first time as run director since I had started volunteering for DofE and I was very nervous going in to it, however the experienced volunteers guided me through it and I couldn't have done it without their help. There were many volunteers today to help out with over 80 junior runners, which was very helpful. We started with the volunteers brief which I thought went well, remembering to mention all of the milestones which our volunteers had met. We then moved on to the runner's brief, with a massive number of runners raring to take on the 2k course. After the warm up we moved on to the run which as Scott reminded me is not a "RACE". Lots of the runners today posted quick times and all gave a really good effort. Thanks again to all the volunteers for making this event and my first as run director possible.

Remembrance Sunday parkrun

It was a beautiful morning for Junior parkrun today. What a difference a week can make after last week’s downpour.
As it was Remembrance Sunday we were missing some of our regular runners who were involved with parades. Despite this, 36 runners turned up to take on the 2K course.
Even though the course was very wet and slippy, 10 runners posted personal best times – a great effort!
Thank you to the volunteers for braving the cold – and a special mention for volunteer heroine Janice for reaching her 50th volunteer milestone - a big Whoop! Whoop! from the core team as well as Whoop! Whoop! for Stuart (your RD for the day) for whom it was his 25th volunteer occasion.

Event 20 – The first frost!

I checked the thermometer this morning, and it was officially chilly. But did that deter the 51 runners who came to Daventry Junior Parkrun this morning - you know the answer to that! With a beautiful blue sky as the backdrop, 5 runners speeded their way through to a PB. A big shout out too to the 4 first timers - we hope to see you again soon.

A particular thanks to the volunteers, who struggled with numb fingers to scan your barcodes and cheer you on - the event couldn’t happen without you, so many thank you’s to all the volunteers. And a special mention to one volunteer - Simon Elliott, who managed to timetable in volunteering as a VI guide into his 50th birthday celebrations, well done to Scarlett for ensuring that he built up a sweat!

Finally, congratulations to George, Ethan and Nathan who all collected their half marathon wristbands today.

Event 17 – The Rainy One!

Event 17 – the rainy one!

In a way I feel very lucky that we got to week 16 without rain but boy did we got it today! I need to say a massive, massive thank you to all the amazing volunteers who still came along (quite a few without their children) to ensure that the event went ahead. When I was walking the course to check it this morning I was wondering if we would get any volunteers or runners but I should never have doubted you all! We kept inside the pavilion for as long as possible doing pre-run brief and warm up in there before braving the weather to start the run. 28 brave runners went out and ran the course including 3 first timers. Despite the weather 14 children got PB’s and 3 more children joined the half marathon club – Niamh, Florence and Jonathan.

Event 16 – Your Core Team

16 weeks in and once again we were lucky with the weather as the sun was shining on a beautiful autumn morning. 73 youngsters completed the run today (with a further 3 completing one lap) including 10 first timers. I challenged all the children to give as many high fives as possible on their way round the marshals reported back that the children took on this challenge with their usual enthusiasm as our marshals got a lot of high fives!

We are yet to manage a week where we have the whole core team there but today I was lucky enough to have most of them there to volunteer and as our parkrun ambassadors were available as well we decided to take the opportunity to meet afterwards over cake (a staple as far as parkrun is concerned!), introduce our 2 newest team members to everyone and catch up on what has happened over the last 16 weeks (where has the time gone!) as well as make plans for the future.

With the support from the 86 people who have volunteered over the last 16 weeks the core team have transitioned from a set up team who drove the planning of the event to a very able team who run the event each week which means I even get the occasional Sunday off!

So what did we discuss over cake?
Christmas & New Year, far too early I know but we needed to confirm our intentions to parkrun HQ about events over the festive period (we are cancelling on 25th December and 1st January), a fancy dress event (coming soon on 30th October) and a foodbank collection in December (more on this later).

We also discussed how we can further get information out about junior parkrun in the local community including some work we are doing and have planned with local sports clubs, Scouting groups and schools – if you have any ideas of how we can link up with a local club/group you are involved with or spread the word of junior parkrun please let us know.

A very important part of the core teams’ job is safeguarding all the children that take part so we also discussed some of the latest policies and how we can best ensure these are applied at our event.

So who are your core team? In the team we have Sally, Stuart, Jill, Katie, Katharine, Stella, Lorienne, Scott, Alan and Beverley (Event Director) – the 2 missing from the photo are Lorienne and Scott. We are ably supported by our parkrun ambassadors – Julie and Mark (Julie is in the photo!)

If you want to join the core team, or even just volunteer please let us know, the more the merrier and we are happy to train you in any of the roles that we have available. If you want to know what the roles do you can get further information in this article (we don’t have all of them at Daventry Juniors) https://support.parkrun.com/hc/en-us/articles/200566523-What-do-the-volunteers-do- and the volunteer roster is http://www.parkrun.org.uk/daventry-juniors/futureroster/

Event Number 15

The dew was heavy and there was an autumn chill in the air but we had a beautiful morning for Daventry Junior parkrun number 15. We welcomed 5 first time runners and just as importantly several first time volunteers! A special thanks to Anita and Edward for turning up early and clearing the course of lots of litter – and getting wet feet and very cold hands in the process – before marshalling, and in Edwards case running (very fast)! You both get superhero status this week.
Trinity made it first over the line in a very good time followed by Cameron with a personal best – great running. So many runners are posting quicker times – your regular Sunday morning parkrun must be paying off!
We do need volunteers for next week so please let us know via our facebook page or via the volunteer roster tab on Daventry’s junior parkrun website. See you next week!
