Run Report Event 43

It was a really sunny morning for junior parkrun today although quite slippy from last night's down pour of rain. It was my first time as run director since I had started volunteering for DofE and I was very nervous going in to it, however the experienced volunteers guided me through it and I couldn't have done it without their help. There were many volunteers today to help out with over 80 junior runners, which was very helpful. We started with the volunteers brief which I thought went well, remembering to mention all of the milestones which our volunteers had met. We then moved on to the runner's brief, with a massive number of runners raring to take on the 2k course. After the warm up we moved on to the run which as Scott reminded me is not a "RACE". Lots of the runners today posted quick times and all gave a really good effort. Thanks again to all the volunteers for making this event and my first as run director possible.

Remembrance Sunday parkrun

It was a beautiful morning for Junior parkrun today. What a difference a week can make after last week’s downpour.
As it was Remembrance Sunday we were missing some of our regular runners who were involved with parades. Despite this, 36 runners turned up to take on the 2K course.
Even though the course was very wet and slippy, 10 runners posted personal best times – a great effort!
Thank you to the volunteers for braving the cold – and a special mention for volunteer heroine Janice for reaching her 50th volunteer milestone - a big Whoop! Whoop! from the core team as well as Whoop! Whoop! for Stuart (your RD for the day) for whom it was his 25th volunteer occasion.

Event 17 – The Rainy One!

Event 17 – the rainy one!

In a way I feel very lucky that we got to week 16 without rain but boy did we got it today! I need to say a massive, massive thank you to all the amazing volunteers who still came along (quite a few without their children) to ensure that the event went ahead. When I was walking the course to check it this morning I was wondering if we would get any volunteers or runners but I should never have doubted you all! We kept inside the pavilion for as long as possible doing pre-run brief and warm up in there before braving the weather to start the run. 28 brave runners went out and ran the course including 3 first timers. Despite the weather 14 children got PB’s and 3 more children joined the half marathon club – Niamh, Florence and Jonathan.

Event 16 – Your Core Team

16 weeks in and once again we were lucky with the weather as the sun was shining on a beautiful autumn morning. 73 youngsters completed the run today (with a further 3 completing one lap) including 10 first timers. I challenged all the children to give as many high fives as possible on their way round the marshals reported back that the children took on this challenge with their usual enthusiasm as our marshals got a lot of high fives!

We are yet to manage a week where we have the whole core team there but today I was lucky enough to have most of them there to volunteer and as our parkrun ambassadors were available as well we decided to take the opportunity to meet afterwards over cake (a staple as far as parkrun is concerned!), introduce our 2 newest team members to everyone and catch up on what has happened over the last 16 weeks (where has the time gone!) as well as make plans for the future.

With the support from the 86 people who have volunteered over the last 16 weeks the core team have transitioned from a set up team who drove the planning of the event to a very able team who run the event each week which means I even get the occasional Sunday off!

So what did we discuss over cake?
Christmas & New Year, far too early I know but we needed to confirm our intentions to parkrun HQ about events over the festive period (we are cancelling on 25th December and 1st January), a fancy dress event (coming soon on 30th October) and a foodbank collection in December (more on this later).

We also discussed how we can further get information out about junior parkrun in the local community including some work we are doing and have planned with local sports clubs, Scouting groups and schools – if you have any ideas of how we can link up with a local club/group you are involved with or spread the word of junior parkrun please let us know.

A very important part of the core teams’ job is safeguarding all the children that take part so we also discussed some of the latest policies and how we can best ensure these are applied at our event.

So who are your core team? In the team we have Sally, Stuart, Jill, Katie, Katharine, Stella, Lorienne, Scott, Alan and Beverley (Event Director) – the 2 missing from the photo are Lorienne and Scott. We are ably supported by our parkrun ambassadors – Julie and Mark (Julie is in the photo!)

If you want to join the core team, or even just volunteer please let us know, the more the merrier and we are happy to train you in any of the roles that we have available. If you want to know what the roles do you can get further information in this article (we don’t have all of them at Daventry Juniors) https://support.parkrun.com/hc/en-us/articles/200566523-What-do-the-volunteers-do- and the volunteer roster is http://www.parkrun.org.uk/daventry-juniors/futureroster/

Event Number 15

The dew was heavy and there was an autumn chill in the air but we had a beautiful morning for Daventry Junior parkrun number 15. We welcomed 5 first time runners and just as importantly several first time volunteers! A special thanks to Anita and Edward for turning up early and clearing the course of lots of litter – and getting wet feet and very cold hands in the process – before marshalling, and in Edwards case running (very fast)! You both get superhero status this week.
Trinity made it first over the line in a very good time followed by Cameron with a personal best – great running. So many runners are posting quicker times – your regular Sunday morning parkrun must be paying off!
We do need volunteers for next week so please let us know via our facebook page or via the volunteer roster tab on Daventry’s junior parkrun website. See you next week!

Event Number 13 (Lucky for us) – written by a guest run report writer (Isabel)

On the 18th September 2016 the 13th (unlucky for some!) Daventry junior parkrun took place; it was held at the Daventry Sports Park in glorious autumn sunshine. As always, the run was two laps round the fields.
We had some first timers today, they were: Joseph; Sophie; Kayden; Sam; Emily and  Jessica.
We also had some new PBs today. The total number broken was 25! Harriet got her blue wristband for completing 11 parkruns as well! Well done!

Also a very big well done to Trinity and Isabel for doing a swimming competition and then getting up to do the parkrun in the morning!

Event 12

Luckily yesterday's deluge didn't put off our runners, and we had a good turnout this morning. There were a few wet feet (10 hours later the trainers my sons were wearing still aren't dry!) but the bright sunny morning was perfect for a run and everyone was keen to get going - I was nearly trampled during the warmup and everyone was running for the start line before we had finished the countdown! The enthusiasm carried on through the run; our first 6 finishers and 27 of our runners in total all got PBs today, well done guys!
Big thanks this week to Katie, who spent some time before the run going backwards and forwards across the field to litter pick and cover up holes in the course. I am sure she must have done at least a mile before she started tail running!
I made an appeal during the briefing today for volunteers for the next couple of weeks, especially for the 25th as most of our core team are unable to be there. Thank you so much to everyone who approached me to put their names down; the rosters are now looking much healthier. We still have spaces for more though, so please let us know if you can help.

Event 8 – A week of firsts

Today was our eighth run of the Daventry Juniors parkrun, and our eighth week in a row of lovely dry weather and good running conditions. Despite it being the holiday season, we had another great turnout and almost a full volunteer roster.

We had a few firsts this week. Our first finisher Arthur was clearly recharged by a few weeks away from the event; he ran a new PB, a course record and was our first runner ever to complete the course in under 8 minutes. As well as this, our second and third finishers Lewis and Trinity also got PBs, and we also had another 15 runners who ran with us for the first time. Some of our volunteers were also with us for the first time this week, and we hope to see them again soon!

In less good news, we lost a finish token for the first time. After 7 weeks of getting all the tokens back (which we suspect is probably a parkrun record!) we did lose one today - if you had the number 24 finish token and took it home by mistake, we would be grateful if you could let us know via the Facebook page or email to daventry-juniorsoffice@parkrun.com, or bring the token to parkrun on your next visit.

Huge shout out this week goes to Katharine Rymell. I arrived first and set out to walk the course when I arrived, and there were unfortunately a few presents left behind for us by some of the local dog walkers. When I came back to the pavilion to get supplies to clean up the mess, Katharine had arrived early for her volunteer stint and she offered to help by going around half of the course for me. Thank you Katharine, it was hugely appreciated - although it may have put you off arriving early in future!

Event 7 – It’s all about the horn and the girls did quite well too!

Event 7 It’s all about the horn and the girls did quite well too!

Hello me again (Scott) another lovely day far a parkrun. Weather tick, young people tick, super awesome volunteers tick, starting horn tick tick tick tick boom!!

Before that start I again had the honour to hand out a half marathon wrist band to Calum, well done buddy well deserved, I felt a little bit like the queen handing out an MBE.

On to the run! I was wondering which of the boys would be our first finisher today as I honked the starting horn. I was in for a shock because…………………..

HERE COME THE GIRLS!!!!!!!

Possibly motivated by my excessive use of the motivational horn of loudness not only was our first finisher a girl but our second and third finishers were as well so well done to Emily, Trinity and Jemma.

First finisher for the boys was Aidan, a new name for the boys, and to be fair as a Villa fan this will be the highlight of his sporting year, good skills Aidan!

A new feature of my run reports will now be Scott’s shout out corner:
1. Big high five to Sophie who always puts in maximum effort and achieved a personal best today.
2. George, a Daventry junior parkrun veteran of 5 runs also got a new Personal Best HONK HONK!
3. Not to be outdone George’s brother also managed a new Personal best nice one Henry.
4. As I have said it’s not all about the runners so my volunteer shout out and High Fives go to George and Harry. For those that don’t know them they are the two young lads cheering you on every week!

Event 6 – The stats!

During set up today I decided that I should have a go at running the course to see how my time compared to the field – let’s just say there is a reason I volunteer rather than run as my time would have put me around 32nd!

Besides being a slow runner what you may not know me, Beverley, (Event Director and today’s Run Director) is that I love numbers and stats so todays’ report is all about the stats!

Today we had 49 runners, 7 newcomers and an amazing 30 PB’s. Shout out to little Amelia, a first timer who was amazing and crossed the line 48th in 18.52 to lots of applause from the volunteers.

We have now had six events and since the start we have had 180 different runners who have completed 443 runs covering a total distance of 886 km with a whopping 143 new Personal Bests being run over this time.

We had our 3rd different male first finisher today – Marley who ran an impressive 8.07, just slightly behind the course record of 8.04, Marley was chased the whole way round by last weeks’ first finisher Lewis (who has run a PB every time he has run the course!). I wonder whether it will be one of these 2 boys or our other male first finisher, Arthur that will get under the 8 minute time first?

For the girls there have been 2 first finishers – Abbie and Trinity. Trinity was running today having run Daventry parkrun yesterday (5km) in an impressive time and yet still managed to run a PB (an impressive 35 seconds better than the first time she ran the course)

Two children have completed all 6 runs so – Shane and Henry. Keep up the great work boys! Which of you will be first to collect your half marathon wristband with runs completed solely at Daventry Juniors? Calum today clocked up his 11th junior parkrun (5 with us) and so will collect his wristband next week.

A few other stats:
Average number of runners per week: 73.8
Average run time: 00:14:07
Average number of runs per runner: 2.5

And the stats for the volunteers are just as impressive:
59 different volunteers have clocked up 138 volunteering occasions and 11 different roles in the 6 events including 3 volunteers who have been at all 6 events so far (Jill Jelley & David Shaw plus myself) - if you want to try volunteering please just make yourself known to the run director or myself or email us at daventry-juniorshelpers@parkrun.com. Tristy Oliver today showed up and bravely agreed to barcode scan, having never volunteered before, and declared it great fun. Katie Brougham, another regular volunteer, has been converted to timekeeper extraordinaire after initially being nervous of trying it.

Male placings:
Marley BROUGHAM (JM11-14) (Unattached) was first over the line in 08:07 - first time in 4 appearances.
Lewis MIDDLETON (JM10) of Daventry AAC, was second over the line in 08:24 - was first to finish once before.
Louis JORDAN (JM10) (Unattached) was third (4th overall) over the line in 09:04.
