Run Report – 6th Anniversary event Saturday 14th April 2018

Well what fun we had :)

Saturday 14th April was our 6th birthday. It all started on the same date in 2012 since when 11,000 people have completed 62,000 parkruns with us covering a mind-boggling total distance of 310,000 km (or 186,000 laps of the park). Quite an excuse for a party!

So at 8.30am groups of people could be spotted arriving in Dulwich Park with balloons, bunting, party hats, tables, prizes, cakes and more as well as our normal event kit. But perhaps what made it all the more special was that the sunshine arrived as well which along with hundreds of daffodils planted by Dulwich Park Friends volunteers made the perfect setting for event photos...

Our Event Director, Lucy, kicked off proceedings with a warm welcome to the assembled crowd - a record breaking attendance of 415 participants alongside 20 volunteers, spectators, friends and supporters. In particular we were delighted to welcome visitors from parkrun HQ with their Japanese guests and to hear Tom Williams (parkrun's COO) add his words of support to the briefing.

Naturally we also said a huge 'thankyou' to those of the 511 volunteers present who've helped stage our event over the past six years and acknowledged the many milestones achieved by individual participants with some achieving more today. Indeed we'd put out a request for people to wear their milestone T-shirts if they had one in order to take a mass photo before the start, this now making a nice new profile pic on our twitter feed :)

And then as normal around 9am every Saturday morning, hundreds of people (with a few dogs and buggies) ran, jogged or walked round our free 5k course, including 52 joining us for the first time and 80 who achieved 'PB' times. We had a collection of spot-prizes donated by our local Intersport shop in Herne Hill (thanks again Pete!) for a lucky number of finishers and we had cake. Lots and lots of cake!

Thank you to everyone who helped make Saturday's event #319 such a success. We look forward to many more years (and parties) to come. And whilst we are in celebratory mood, our core volunteer team is meeting for a drink at the Plough pub on Lordship Lane tomorrow evening (Wednesday 18th April) from 8pm and would welcome you joining us. No running gear required :)
