Christmas and New Year at Durham parkrun

Please note that our last parkrun before Christmas will be on Saturday 17th December 2016. We will not be holding parkruns on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve or New Year's Day due to the sports centre being either closed or on limited opening hours. Our first parkrun back at Durham after Christmas will be on Saturday 7th January 2017. I expect many of you will enjoy some parkrun tourism over the festive period; if you want to see which parkruns are on on Christmas Day and New Year's Day (when you can get a double parkrun fitted in!), see http://www.parkrun.org.uk/christmas-compendium/

Last ever Sweatshop monthly prize winner – October 2015

We're delighted to announce that Nick Calver was the October 2015 recipient of our monthly prize, generously but for the last time supported by Sweatshop.

We'd like to thank Sweatshop for all their monthly prizes, but also for the help especially of one of their former Metrocentre managers, Craig Herkes, a founding member of our core volunteer team here in Durham, and whose dad Stewart once just a parkrun spectator (and babysitter for Craig's small daughter) is now part of our core volunteer team.

Jim wrote a few words and sent some pictures for us

"I would like to thank Durham parkrun for giving me this award, I am not sure it is fully deserved. For those of you that don’t know me I was unfortunate to damage my knee whilst participating in the Northumberland Coast Run. It has taken me nearly eighteen month to get back into the habit of running and enjoying running.

Sweatshop prize Jim Nicholson August 2015

I have found the parkruns perfect because it is the ideal distance and I am able to judge how well or poorly I am improving each week. This year I had two challenges, the first being the Blaydon Race and the second the Great North Run. I have met these challenges so next year I will need to add a further two challenges.

Sweatshop prize Jim Nicholson August 2015

I made the most of my award, visiting the Sweatshop at the Metro centre and choosing the most suitable (and expensive) pair of shoes for my (unusual) running gait. The staff were very helpful ensuring that I had chosen wisely – see photographs.

Once again many thank for this award.
