Falkirk parkrun defeats the weather yet again

We always say "it never rains at Falkirk parkrun" and once again we we were proven right. Despite the weather bullies trying to insist we would be ravaged by lightning and washed away by torrential rain, once again the run proceeded in full sunshine.

Jennifer Poyner ran her 145th parkrun today on her first time at Falkirk and her last before she moves to deepest, darkest England.
Laura Tooey stepped in to give a mother and sone from Inverness to Grangemouth stadium so they could watch their daughter/sister in action at the national championships. #loveparkrun
Congratulations to Tamsyn Sloan on running her 50th parkrun today.

Thank you to everyone involved in today's event, especially the volunteers.

Don't forget our paced event on 7th September where we are hoping to get 400 runners to celebrate the 400th Falkirk parkrun. Get the date in your diary and tell everyone you know.

Keep running, keep smiling and don't forget your barcode.

Falkirk parkrun #385 – Run Report

As I suggested on Friday night, we had near perfect conditions for running on Saturday and, given the 58 PBs that were recorded, I believe I was correct. We celebrated two runners reaching their parkrun centenary and one reaching their double centenary which meant there was a lot of cake going around. Let's be honest, cake is why most of us run, right? (Healthy alternatives are available but really dull).

In a couple of months Falkirk parkrun will turn 8. I thought I'd look back to where we were in our first May (2012). On that day 124 people ran which means we've nearly tripled in size in the intervening years. While there were a lot of familiar names in the results and volunteer list who still attend, there are also some we never see anymore. It's great that our little community evolves and that we're able to sustain such a popular parkrun.

On that note, have a great week and we'll see you in the park on Saturday for more PB hunting. Here's the stats:

Falkirk parkrun, event number 385 - 11th May 2019

Run report event #378

After last weeks event was cancelled the core team were monitoring the park conditions and then the weather throughout the week. Thankfully we were able to go ahead and I am very grateful to our resilient band of hi-viz heroes who left their warm homes to stand / walk in the miserable conditions thus enabling 147 parkrun participants to run or walk in our beautiful Callendar park. We were delighted to welcome Anne Cox from Sedgefield parkrun who was visiting family locally and insisted that she had to do some volunteer tourism, she will be back at 'Anne's corner' next week at Sedgefield. We were able to celebrate some milestones today too, congratulations to Roslyn Miller on her 50th parkrun (44 at Falkirk); Alan Paton on his 100th parkrun (87 at Falkirk); and Kenny Gray on his 250th parkrun (223 at Falkirk).

147 participants today. 7 recorded personal bests. We welcomed 7 first timers.

Thank you to everybody who participated in today's parkrun and your continued support of Falkirk parkrun.
See you again soon #DFYB

Run report – event #372 – 26/01/2019

I am sure some of you will have seen the lovely words that Lissie Faulks posted on the Falkirk parkrun Facebook page yesterday. People like Lissie are a great inspiration to others and it was a priviliege to be able to announce her 50th parkrun. Perhaps a greater privilge though is that her parkrun friend, Ron Gray, made some brownies to help the celebrations. So I would like to say well done to Ron (and I suppose to Lissie too).

There was another milestone to be celebrated today. It was not an official parkrun milestone however was still significant. Yes, Lesley McGuire turned up with ample time to spare before the race start. She is notorious for turning up late and I think holds the Falkirk parkrun record of having crossed the start line on one occasion a full 11 minutes after the run has been set off. Perhaps I should also mention that Lesley ran her 300th parkrun today. An impressive 274 of these have been at Falkirk and given today was just out 372nd event she has a darn good strike rate.

Rhona and Bill from Arrow Valley parkrun in Redditch came to say hello today and then afterwards to say thank you as they had enjoyed the Falkirk parkrun experience very much. They got chatting to a variety of people and greatly contributed to the friendly atmosphere. Rhona and Bill, you will be welcome back any time.

We also had visitors from Broughty Ferry, Aberdeen, Plean (*waves to Vicky), Edinburgh, Pollock, Kirkcaldy, Linwood, Springburn and Perth. Thanks for coming guys!

All this contributed to a field of 344 runners, walkers and joggers - the third highest in our history - all of whom enjoyed some pretty balmy weather - in contrast to what the nation had experienced midweek. It was, as usual, great to see all the smiles as people crossed the line and also observing so many lining up along the finish straight to encourage their parkrun pals.

Today was a great day. Today was a Falkirk parkrun day.

Today also saw the number of individuals who have volunteered at Falkirk parkrun creep up to 985 so it won't be long until we reach 1,000, which will be an amazing achievement. If you haven't previously volunteered at Falkirk you now have the chance of the honour of being our thousandth volunteer!

Keep running, keep smiling and don't forget your parkrun.

Without them, there is no event

Run Report - Event 353 - 22/09/2018

After the damage caused by Storm Ali during the week it was debatable whether it would be possible to host an event today. We therefore have to give thanks to the Forestry Commission for their efforts in removing a fallen tree and clearing other debris from the paths in Callendar Wood. The lower part of the route is covered by Falkirk Community Trust who came out to make sure the tarmac paths were safe for us to run on too.

Falkirk parkrun is indebted also to both organisations for allowing us to operate each week under permit from each. The support they give us is second to none.

Fiona Kirkaldy from the core team went out on her own on Friday to do an early recce so that if we did have to cancel we would provide as much notice as possible. Fiona is a very committed member of the Core Team and we are fortunate to have her by our side.

Twenty five volunteers came out this morning to help put on event 353 of Falkirk parkrun.

Thank you Forestry Commission. Thank you Falkirk Community Trust. Thank you Fiona Kirkaldy. Thank you to today's 25 volunteers.

Without you the show would not go on.

Thank you to all the runners too.

Keep running, keep smiling and don't forget your barcode.

Falkirk parkrun – Event #338 Run Report

What a great day for running in the park with light winds and coolish conditions through the woods. I think we broke a few records:

  • Most first timers at a briefing - there were 60 this week.
  • Most unknown runners in an event - 32!
  • Longest time from 1st run to 50th (at Falkirk) - Andrew Moodie.

Brilliant to have so many visitors, one of whom described our course as the most beautiful of the 30 or so he's done so far. Also great to see so many newbies with us which suggests that you did indeed bring an NHS buddy with you.

Thanks to all of our 24 volunteers and 304 runners for a great start to Saturday.

Just a quick reminder that if you cross the finish line we need you to take a token and return it to the scanning point even if you've not got a barcode. It just helps the machine work better and means we get the results processed before our blackpudding and egg roll congeals into a cold lump of stodge.

It's been 4 years since I last was Run Director. I thought I'd retired for good but as someone a lot more literate than me once said, "Never Say Never". I enjoyed being back and all the lovely volunteers made my first time back go quite smoothly. Thank you.

Event 196

I've always said we have the best of the parkrun community at Falkirk and this was demonstrated today once again. Not only did we have Aron Spence stepping up at the 11th hour to cover a vacant volunteer position but we also had a number of runners looking out for others who were struggling.

Great to meet some of the parkrun tourists up from London today. I walked through their local park last weekend and did think it'd be a great place for a parkrun. Obviously others thought the same thing and set up one in Southwark park. They've just celebrated 100 runs in that park, we're just about to celebrate Falkirk's 200th parkrun.

Finally, on a personal note, this was my last weekend on the core team. After 3 and a half years on the team and with the ice hockey season upon us again it's time to step back. I love our team in Falkirk, we've got some brilliant new additions to join the existing brilliant bunch who make sure we can run the event 52 weeks of the year. You'll still see me in the park but hopefully running more than volunteering.
