Ferry Meadows parkrun Run Report – 7th March 2020

A fellow local parkrunner posted in the week in a Facebook group that he and a friend were heading to Ferry Meadows parkrun and had a couple of spare seats in their car, if anyone was interested in joining them. Knowing that I needed a letter ‘F’ for my alphabet challenge, I jumped at the chance.

It was an early start for a parkrun day, leaving Market Harborough at 7am, but it was well worth it. We arrived in plenty of time, but when Kenny, Brian and Abigail said they were heading off for a warm-up run, I did wonder what I’d let myself in for! Their idea of a warm-up was 4km. Thankfully, I needn’t have worried, as Kenny suggested if I didn’t want to join them, I could wait in the café – phew. That would have worn me out before we’d even started the parkrun otherwise!

They all returned, we listened to the first timers briefing and then the main briefing, before moving forwards towards the start line.

Once we were off, we followed the lovely course – all on tarmac paths, and reasonably flat. There is a nice 1km loop around a small lake at the start before heading out following the path around Overton Lake, with a small loop to return the way we came out.

There were plenty of friendly marshals out on the course and an efficient funnel at the end with three orderly queues for barcode scanning. The café was lovely and there was lots of on-site parking.

630 people took park in today’s event to either run, jog or walk the course – well done to everyone. There were over 100 PBs today, including the first finisher in an amazing, new course record time of 14:44.

There were also 64 first timers, 41 of whom were female; 38 of the total first timers are completely new to parkrun and 28 of these were female – I would imagine a lot of these came to parkrun to celebrate International Women’s Day – we hope you return soon – well done to everyone. Of the 630 parkrunners, many dressed in purple, 298 were female, 306 were male (the remainder were unknown runners), so a fairly even split to celebrate IWD.

I would definitely recommend this parkrun to anyone who hasn’t yet done it – thank you everyone.
