Here we are, the '20s have begun and the first Saturday parkrun has been completed at Ferry Meadows. Left home a little earlier than normal as I had volunteered to do the First Timer Brief as well as Report Writing. This was the first time I had completed the Brief and whilst a little nerve wrecking to start with but it’s a role I may well look to complete again.
I have reached 48 parkruns now and have 6 volunteer credits, my aim this year is to volunteer once a month in various roles to gain a greater understanding of what goes on behind the scenes. Four report writing, one car park marshal (Crowland) and now First Timer Brief.
I will soon be hitting my 50th parkrun and that will be in London somewhere and it will be the 18th different course I have ran. parkrun started for me in May 2018 when I went to Norwich for the first time. Since then 25 visits to Ferry Meadows (formerly Peterborough) along with various other places including Berlin (Hasenheide) and Cieszyn and Zielona Gora in Poland. Its been a journey that I’m glad I started and look forward to visiting many other places in the time to come.
For me, parkrun is a great thing community wise and really gets the weekend started for me. 2019 saw me complete 38 times, hopefully I will achieve a figure similar to this in 2020. Saturday saw me complete in 24.42 and it was Groundhog day for me as it was the same time as Saturday 28th December.
Enough about my parkrun journey so far and on to this weeks event, the attendance was 699 which is a great start to the year. Its worth noting that the first Saturday in 2019 had the same amount of runners. The current record for the event is 762, could this be broken in 2020?
First person home was Isaac Ellard with a time of 17.13 and first female was Sam Cullen with a time of 18.48. Well done to you both.
Landmark achievements at this event include Kay Gibson who completed her 200th run - even though this is not an official parkrun milestone it's worth giving credit where it's due.
We had two people joining the 100th parkrun club, congratulations to Franco Genovese and a good friend of mine, Will Hardie.
We also had four people joining the 50th parkrun club, James Leeman, Ruth Towell, Ray Wilson and Jean Hamilton. Congratulations to you all and hopefully see some more milestone shirts on display in the coming weeks.
This event welcomed 56 first timers to Ferry Meadows, of which 40 were using their barcodes for the very first time. You are all welcome at parkrun and we hope to see you again in the near future.
67 new PBs were achieved this week so well done to you all on your achievements.
Unfortunately there were 27 unknown runners today. Has to be said “Don’t forget your barcode” as no barcode = no official recognition of your run.
Todays volunteering heroes include Ausra BAJORINAITE • Barbara JOHNSON • Brian CAINE • Brian CORLEYS • Caitlin ROOKYARD • Caroline VOWLES • Elise COLLIE • Freddie HOUSE • Jacqueline SLATER • James BURTON • James SELLS • Jayne PELL • Jennifer POWELL • Karen WILLIAMS • Kiera ATKINSON • Lee JONES • Lorna YOUNG • Louise RICHARDSON • Mandy POWELL • Martin SHELBOURNE • Nathan RICHARDSON • Nicola MARTIN • Paul MCVEY • Paul NICHOLLS • Paul WILKS • Peter BRANTOM • Peter BROWN • Peter RIDLEY • Raeanne ELLIOTT • Roy YOUNG • Steve MEGSON • Sue RIDLEY • Tim SLATER without these people we wouldn’t have a parkrun. Take a look at the future roster and lets help the core team.
All the best for 2020 in the parkrun world and keep smiling, also remember to thank the marshals for giving up their time so we can complete our runs.
