Gibside parkrun Event number 153 1st July 2017

Didn't the parkrun weather fairy do us proud? Optimum conditions for 14 of you to manage a PB this morning.

Great to see the ladies from This Girl Can at Gibside today. Keep an eye for them doing a volunteer take over with us in September. Also congratulations to Tracy Bowers on completing her 100th parkrun with us this morning. She had the timekeepers a little worried with her entourage crossing the finish line!

Tail Walking

From parkrun's Chief Operating Officer, Tom Williams

"By now you are likely to be aware that we recently changed the title of one of our volunteer roles, as Tail Runner became Tail Walker. You’ll also be aware that over the last year or so we have begun proactively encouraging less-active people to engage with our events, in line with our mission statement: “A healthier, happier planet.”

Our own insight shows us that by far the most common reason for someone registering and not participating is that they don't feel capable of running 5k. However, since the earliest days of parkrun we have encouraged walkers at all our events and aimed to make them feel welcome.

For example, when we started Woodhouse Moor parkrun in October 2007, my friend Tess walked round the course in 58 minutes, supported by another friend of mine who walked with her as a volunteer that day. We also created the strap-line “Walk it, jog it, run it”.

In recent times we felt that not only was the term “tail runner” becoming less accurate, as more participants were walking at our events, it was also discouraging the least confident people from registering. This was discussed in depth with Chrissie Wellington (as our Global Lead for Health & Wellbeing) and the participation team, as well as Ambassadors and EDs. Those discussions led to the change of title.

It is our hope that this change will encourage some of those who would benefit most from increased socially-focused physical activity to take part in our events. We also hope that it will amplify the message across all of parkrun that walkers are always welcome.

Importantly, the role is unchanged. As previously the tail runners walked where appropriate, tail walkers are of course permitted to run where appropriate. We do expect a slight upturn in walking participants, however we do not foresee any significant impact on volunteer teams."

Gibside parkrun Event number 149 3rd June 2017

Yesterday saw our local running club - DVRC undertake all of the volunteer roles. They try to do this at least once a month as it provides an excellent opportunity for the club to show their appreciation of parkrun and give something back to the local running community, demonstrating to non-club runners that running clubs are both welcoming and inclusive places for runners of all abilities. Derwent Valley Running Club pride themselves on being a small, friendly club of mixed abilities and ages, joined together by their love of running. With their distinctive red and white vests they are regularly seen at road, trail and fell races across the region.
