The one where lots of us ran an extra bit

Event #306

This week 263 people were welcomed to Graves Park by Run Director Cat who expertly navigated the tongue-twisting phrases of “it’s a run, not a race” and “no funnel duckers please”.  As has become expected, William contributed to the race briefing too and anyone there early enough was treated to him yelling “pigeon!” at a crow in our favourite tree! It was as fairly cool and slightly overcast morning as we all listened in to the essential instructions, welcomed new participants and thanked this week’s volunteers.

Last Sunday was the London Marathon and with it came the tragic death of Matt Campbell. Matt collapsed 22.5 miles into the marathon and during the week there was a wave of support for the Brathay Trust fundraiser behind the hashtag #FinishForMatt, the idea being to cover the 3.7 miles he had left to complete his marathon.  Graves parkrun received several queries about the possibility of marking out the extra distance and, having been out earlier in the week to complete a 3.7 mile run with one of those who successfully completed the marathon, it was clear how much this meant to our participants and particularly those who had taken part in the event last week.  Like lots of other parkruns across the country, we measured out the additional, optional distance, and Cat did a fantastic job of explaining that those wishing to take part could finish their 5k as normal and then complete the additional distance.  We had a special marshal in Millie Pollard who ensured everyone knew where they needed to head to at the end of the event.  Of particular note for me, was Roger Knightley who turned 77 this week and after completing his 164thparkrun, covered the extra distance with myself and two London Marathon runners, Sarah King and Jane Evans. Thank you to all who took part.

You could even get involved with what's needed after the event, token sorting, results processing or report writing and as an added bonus you get to admire Green's legs, if you want to.

We had a visiting Run Director with us this week, Chris Tucker of Walsall parkrun, who complimented us on our wonderful course. It’s always nice to meet those involved in other parkruns and to hear that they share our thoughts on how great our own event is.

There were 5 new parkrunners today, we hope you enjoyed your first event and look forward to seeing you again soon.

There was nothing but tumbleweed this week when it came to the shout outs for milestones, there must have been a rush on last week as we had two 51struns, two 101struns and one 251struns this week! The resident Graves Stat-Hunters have spotted a few coming up, so I’m sure normal milestone services will be resumed soon.

As usual, the event would not run anywhere near as well without the wonderful group of volunteers that Graves parkrun attracts. Please remember it’s easy to volunteer, just leave a message on the Graves parkrun Facebook page or e-mail the Graves team on: graveshelpers@parkrun.com or See our volunteer page for details on getting involved in making Graves parkrun happen.
