Milestones:

We had lots of special achievements this week:

Dylan Mather celebrating his 10th junior parkrun. Ben Agar, Hannah Crowther, and Les Morton all celebrating their 50th parkrun and Graham Nield celebrating his 200th parkrun. Well done to all of you!
On a wider note there were some other special events over the past week. It was fantastic to come along to support Sheffield Half Marathon and see so many familiar faces running past from Graves parkrun. Well done to all of you who took part. A special mention to Jennifer Rich who also recently delivered an excellent club record time in the Rotterdam marathon. Well done! Good luck to any parkrunners taking part in London marathon next week.

We had some other special achievers attending today's parkrun. 3 ex Olympians were in attendance today; only the very best for our parkrun! We hope you all enjoyed it.

Just a reminder 16th May Roger will be taking on the challenge of completing a half marathon across 2 spin classes. This will be to raise funds for Developing Physio who help to teach physiotherapy skills to low income / developing countries and marks a year since he was knocked off his bike. To read more about Roger's challenge, the charity he's supporting, or to support him with the challenge you can find more details here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rogershivers

It's always worth keeping an eye on Graves parkrun Facebook page for any announcements. Hopefully all the snow and ice has gone now but you never know!

I had the privilege of meeting Oliver Hart recently. He is the very special man who set up Graves parkrun. We would all like to toast you on this special birthday and thank you for all the benefits Graves parkrun has bought to our lives. It's not just a run, it's bought physical and mental health benefits, happiness and friendships to so many. Here’s to you Oliver, thank you!

Wet, wet, wet!

20180310_094057

We arrived to rain running down the hill near the cafe following the overnight heavy rain. Jo soon bought a feeling a sunshine to the proceedings with her warm welcome to parkrun. Jo welcomed some first timers and visitors to Graves parkrun including James Norton's couch to 5km group. It was lovely to see you all encouraging  each other over the finish!

There were 11 people enjoying their parkrun debut! Well done!

There were also a couple of milestones; Jill Marston-Giroux celebrating her 50th and Paul Higginbottom celebrating his 100th! Well done to you both!

IMG_1243 (2)

Everyone joined in giving all the volunteers a big round of applause. Jo thanked people for coming forward at the last minute and reminded everyone of the importance of volunteering. She asked people to try to volunteer as early in the week as they could to avoid the Run Directors 'having kittens' on Friday night! As much as Jo adores cats, I'm sure she would like to avoid that feeling next Friday, so please email graveshelpers@parkrun.com to volunteer your services to your parkrun! It's a great experience and you will be supported in the role if you haven't done it before. Don't forget,  it may even gain you a piece a cake if you are partaking in parkrun bingo!! A feeling of contributing and cake, what's not to love? Special thanks Lorraine Jolly and Archie the boxer dog for volunteering today!

The full volunteer team were:

Daniel ALSTON, Emma BARKER, Magdalena BOO, Ray CARR, Paul CHAPMAN, Jo ECCLES, Alex FORREST, Dorothy Ross GRAY, Everything's Run GREEN, Marie HIPPEY, Charlie LAST, Sue MATTHEWS, Steve MATTHEWS, Gail MOSS, Lily SMITH, Liz SMITH, Becci TAYLOR, Rog WALTERS

20180310_094214

Jo reminded everyone they need to keep everyone under the age of 11 at arms length of their responsible adult. Apparently there have been some instances of children getting lost at other parkruns causing stress to both parent and child!

It's our 300th parkrun next week (weather permitting)! We look forward to celebrating this with our parkrun family and would welcome any new additions! You don't have to be be quick, the main thing is you come along and enjoy it! We are a friendly bunch and some of us stay to enjoy having a post run drink and chat in the cafe afterwards. So don't be shy come in and join us after, I'm sure you'll receive a warm welcome!

Happy running!

Event #296

It certainly was a bit nippy, with rain, sleet and even light covering of snow but a well-wrapped up 217 park runners turned up to run this morning, supported by our amazing, even more snuggly wrapped-up, volunteers. Thank you for all for braving the weather:

Alison KANE  •  Amelia SANDERSON  •  Christopher DYER  •  Claire TODD  •  Emma PORTUS  •  Jennie WOOD  •  Jo ECCLES  •  Lynn FINDLAY  •  Millie POLLARD  •  Neal PATES  •  Patricia MORRELL  •  Paul GILL  •  Paul HIGGINBOTTOM  •  Pippa WOOD  •  Ray CARR  •  Roger WALTERS  •  Sam WOOD  •  Sarah SANDERSON  •  Sue MATTHEWS

Roger was a happy run director this week, with a full roster of volunteers in place by Thursday and we appreciated the early check of the course and Facebook update; we were going ahead but to be mindful of a large patch of ice near the park keeper’s house. I walked past on my way to the start to find some of our more hardy park runners innovatively (car keys?) chipping away at it! (You can make yourselves known if you wish!). And with marshal, Ray, guiding us past, it certainly didn’t stop 27 people getting PB’s this week.  The briefing was brief this morning but included a milestone shout-out and a round of applause for Gillian RAY and Tom BACK running their 50th run today.

And the weather didn’t stop 16 park runners from running at Graves for the first time this morning. A wonderful Graves welcome to:

Neil STABBS Kate TURNER   John HADFIELD Vaughan WILLIAMSON Julie PATERSON Nicola ENNIS George JACKSON

And to: Scott THORNHILL Gillian ALLEN Christopher WILCOX Justin LEWIS Amanda WALTER Sarah PROCTER Ruth BARNES Heather GUILE Susan GUY    who ran their first ever park run. Well done everybody.

A bit of plug here for my running club, Strideout S8. Many of us are regular runners and volunteers at Graves and here we are still smiling after the run (Eleanor HALL, Cath DAVIES, Me, Chloe HENSHAW, plus Claire TODD tail walking {Roger can be an honorary member!}), plus we had Catherine NEEDHAM, Kerry MARSTON-GIROUX, Sarah HOWSON, Sara BINGHAM and Elaine BIRD running today.  We run every Wednesday evening at 7pm meeting at The Sportsman Pub, S8. There are groups for all abilities and please message us via our Facebook page to find out more.

WINTER MONTHS

We’re not out of bad weather yet, please keep your eye on the Facebook page or Twitter feed for any cancellations. These are few and far between but worth checking on those icy (dare I say snowy!) mornings.

Ice Marshals a plenty!

Event #293

293tree

There was a slightly nervous start to this morning’s run, Roger had been out nice an early to inspect the course and broadcast an early update to the Graves faithful.  Despite some ice being out on the course, we got the go-ahead and 218 brave souls took part in the event.  This was a great chance for Roger to remind everyone to keep an eye out on facebook and twitter early on Saturday mornings to check the event is going ahead, there were lots of cancellations around Sheffield this week.  As well as a safe course, we really need a good number of volunteers each week to ensure the event can take place safely, the number needed in bad weather is a little higher than normal, so please consider volunteering to ensure the event can take place.  It’s been a while since I’ve marshalled, but you may have spotted me at the cross roads after the pond, and you certainly reminded me how much fun it can be with lots of cheer people yelling “thank you” as they passed by!

In addition to Roger’s weather watching this week, he also had to send out a couple of requests for volunteers, this week’s heroes were the following:

Becky GREENWOOD, Catherine SYKES, Charlie LAST, Christopher DYER, David TAYLOR, Everything's Run GREEN, Jill VALENTINE, Jon HOWSON, Martin DOWNHAM, Michael JONES, Michael Peter ANYON, Mike JONES, Paul HIGGINBOTTOM, Robert NICOL, Roger WALTERS, Sarah SANDERSON, Stephen GILMER, Sue MATTHEWS, Susan GILLIE, Tom MUTTON, Tony BELL , Tony ELLIS

goodgym1

Several of the volunteers this week were from goodgym Sheffield, currently undertaking a January Challenge along with the other groups around the UK to complete 5000 good deeds and 50,000kms of running during January. You may have spotted out fetching red t-shirts (not to be confused with 50 club members), picked up a leaflet, heard from our trainer Tom during the briefing or heard one of us yelling “watch out for the ice” on your way round.  If you would like to learn any more about goodgym, have a read here… https://www.goodgym.org/areas/sheffield

250club

Shout outs for milestones this week; Harrison BROWN celebrated joining the Junior 10 club with a new PB, and Andrew MANSFIELD crossed the 50 barrier. Congratulations also to Bryan Bradwell on his 250th run, which he didn't register because he wanted to have a double celebration and run the 250 at his 100th different parkrun. Well done all!

HAPPY NEW YEAR PARKRUNNERS

Event #291

Oops forgot I wasn’t marshalling today but helping out with the run report….. Less shouting, more writing…. It was a cold, and very muddy, January morning which welcomed 227 parkrunners to the first official Graves parkrun of 2018.

peeps

Catherine was RD today and, with the help of William, started off with some exciting news about Graves parkrun Bingo.  Simply collect your Bingo card (or download off the Facebook page) and cross off 12 or more parkrun achievements on the card at any point over the next 12 weeks to win a prize! Yep, cake! What further incentive is needed! William was doing a fab job handing out the cards. Bingo cards will be available at every January parkrun or print your own from facebook - how many did you cross off this week?? And lastly on the Bingo front, the cafe are offering a free cuppa as part of the parkrun bingo. So bring your card to the cafe afterwards and they will cross off that one for you!

Picture1

Catherine reminded everyone of the parkrun rules and due to the mud, that the funnel would be located on the path this week.  The doggy detour was in force as usual in the mud, but I think everyone had left their pooches having a lie in today.

RD

Catherine gave a big shout out of thanks to our fantastic volunteer team this week; many of whom were unable to escape the mud, and this week were:

Brian ADAMS, Magdalena BOO, Bryan BRADWELL, Mark DAVIS, Martin DOWNHAM, Jo ECCLES, Sylvia ELLIS, Lynn FINDLAY, Paul GILL, Stephen GILMER, Everything's Run GREEN, Jon HOWSON, Charlie LAST, Sue MATTHEWS, Catherine NEEDHAM, Robert NICOL, Stuart ROOKER, Jimmy SHARMAN, Helen WAKEFIELD, Roger WALTERS

A round of applause then followed for the milestones this week; there was Lucy GRAY and Leo WARD doing their 50th run today, and Roger KNIGHTLEY and Zebedee VORTEX reaching the 150 milestone. Well done all!

A special mention also to Malcolm TAYLOR who ran his 100th run with each of those runs being completed at Graves. His friend Les e-mailed an interesting story: For the last 20 years or so, Malcolm and Les would meet up at the bottom gate at 9:00am every Saturday morning for a run. When they noticed lots of runners 'on their patch', they decided to join in. Another example of parkrun's fantastic community. Les also mentioned that Malcolm used to be a very good runner and included a photo (below) of Malcolm aged 14/15 at cross country in Graves park where he came in just behind someone who went on to become a World Record Holder, Olympic champion and politician...! We look forward to your next 100 Malcolm, well done!

And a very warm (in the friendly sense) Sheffield welcome to Emma and Harry, who visited from Brisbane (accompanying Dad and Grandad Ray; who managed to sneak in the picture too!). They are more used to a flat course along the seafront in 25deg heat but were wrapped up for cold and smiling all the way round.

Green was in charge of proceedings today and welcomed us with a novel approach to the briefing…

“So this is parkrun
And what have you done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun

And so this is parkrun
I hope you all have parkfun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very merry parkrun
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
With PBs a plenty

And so this is parkrun
For walkers, for runners, for buggies and dogs too
And especially for everyone

So this is parkrun

X”

As always the re was a big hand for this week’s volunteers

Angela JACKSON, Ann BREWSTER, Catherine NEEDHAM, Charlie LAST, Chris ELLIS, Everything's Run GREEN, Jennie WOOD, Jo ECCLES, Magdalena BOO, Martin DOWNHAM, Neil SCHOFIELD, Pippa WOOD, Robert ATKIN, Robert NICOL, Rosemary FERRILL, Rowena YATES, Sam ALLIN, Sam NEEDHAM, Sam WOOD, Sarah UTTLEY, Stephen GILMER, Sylvia ELLIS, Tony ELLIS

A special mention to Magda for managing to distribute finish tokens with no support, pretty impressive stuff in those temperatures! Also to Arif Ali who, although not an official volunteer, did give me a lift to Poolsbrook so I could do the double, see Run Stats for how many others did the same.

If your New Year’s Resolution is to help out with Parkrun, volunteer or maybe if you haven’t settled on one yet, why not think about volunteering at Graves? There are plenty of roles, you get all the training you need and you’ll never be asked to do something you aren’t happy with! Maybe you already volunteer but you fancy trying a different role, time keeping isn’t as bad as everyone thinks!  More details later in the report for how to get involved.

There appear to be no milestones this week, although this could have been caused by the double parkrun option, so if we’ve missed giving you a shout out, let us know!

Keep your eyes peeled for parkrun bingo coming next week, where you can check off different ways of taking part in parkrun with the possibility of being rewarded with cake later in the year.

Roger welcomed everyone to Graves on a chilly but pleasant morning having already been out to reccy the course and give us the all clear just after 7am (double pat on the back for you!).  There was a brief interruption while he received an ice alert call from one of the marshals out on the course, and then normal race briefing procedures were resumed.

Roger commented on how easy the week had been as the volunteer roster had been filled up nice and early, and t would be great if that continued! If you are thinking of volunteering, please do so early to spare our Run Directors any sleepless nights. Marshalling may not seem the most exciting thing to do on a Saturday morning but it can be fun and have a massive impact on those taking part, there were lots of comments this week on the enthusiasm of one Zoe Dickson at the top of killer hill!

A big hand for this week’s volunteers

Charlotte ELLIS, Gary ROCHE, Jo ECCLES, Kieran HICKEY, Libby HOWSON, Lucy LOCKETT, Nicole NIELD, Nigel ARDING, Patricia MORRELL, Peter GOODLIFFE, Robert NICOL, Roger WALTERS, Rosemary FERRILL, Sarah HOWSON, Stephen GILMER, Stephen John DAY, Sue MATTHEWS, Sylvia ELLIS, Zoe DICKINSON

This weeks milestones included Joseph Hearnshaw celebrating his 50th parkrun with a new PB of 20:33 and a very special mention to one of Graves parkrun founders Oliver Hart completing his 100th in tandem with Jasmine Hart reaching 50 as a junior, completing the course in 26:50, a PB for Jasmin and just pipping Oliver to the post on 26:51.

There was nearly another milestone (although unofficial) this week, but Andy Green decided a comedy fall at the start would be more appropriate so has put that off to next Saturday. I’m convinced it was so he could get another cheer for hitting 150 parkruns.

“The run that wasn’t” or “Winter Arrives”

WINTER ARRIVES AT GRAVES PARK!

Skating our way up to the cafe along with the 10 minutes of clearing ice
from the car gave me a strong indication today's event may be cancelled!
Green made the sensible decision to cancel today's parkrun. Many runners
who had braved the cold still decided to do their own 'freedom run'
around the park. It's great people were still able to do this at their
own risk, but I'm sure everyone appreciates the Race Directors have to
put the health and safety of parkrunners first.

Now winter is finally upon us, it is always worth checking Graves
Parkrun Facebook page for any updates. The Race Directors will endeavour
to do a course check before 8am on Saturdays. It's a good opportunity to
thank of our Race Directors for all the work they do. Roger, Jo and
Green were all on hand this am inspecting the course, informing
parkrunners the event was cancelled before they paid for parking. They
all do so much behind the scenes to provide us all with a fantastic
parkrun. I'm sure you will join me in thanking and applauding each and
everyone of them.

Hopefully, we will be back to normal next weekend for our parkrun and
also Percy Pud! In the meantime have a safe and enjoyable week.

Best wishes,

Marie

Roger was at the reigns for today and cordially welcomed everyone to Graves parkrun. As always the first to receive some warm applause were this week’s volunteers. Roger dropped out a chaser email for the last few required roles during the week, but there was a prompt response and he could sleep easy on Friday night.

Jo started off with a rousing welcome to all the first timers and parkrun tourists with her usual ‘joie de vivre'. She also gave a big thank you to all the volunteers, some of whom stepped up at the last minute. The ‘doggy detour’ remains in place for those running with their canine friends, for the rest of us, we permitted to run through the farm park taking in the sights of the donkeys, deer and pigs to name a few.

The fantastic volunteer team were:

Robert ATKIN, Tony BELL, Allison BROAD, Catherine COONEY, Jo ECCLES, Rosemary FERRILL, Peter GOODLIFFE, Paul HIGGINBOTTOM, Marie HIPPEY, Jon HOWSON, Scott HUSSEY, Catherine NEEDHAM, Gavin NEWHOUSE, Robert NICOL, Gillian RAY, Matt RIMMER, Geoffrey TWELVETREE

Parkrun UK was celebrating first time volunteers this week. Here is Scott Hussey on his debut! Hope you enjoyed yourself Scott!

It was good to see the return of some familiar faces including our parkrun Race Director Gavin. We all wish you a speedy recovery.

If you are reading this and contemplating if you should join us. Come along we are a friendly bunch. It doesn’t matter if you run, run/walk or walk all the way round. You will meet inspirational people and you will feel physically and mentally stimulated by taking part. There’s a nice cafe for a natter afterwards and you can even visit the animals in the farm park afterwards!
