parkrun pause #56 (10th Apr 2021)

Spring is in the air and the green shoots of “group running” are popping out! :-) This week I put my Leader in Running Fitness qualification to use and lead an interval session at my running club, Springfield Striders. My group were absolutely lovely and reported that they enjoyed the session and were happy to be back! I know lots of other running clubs have been able to make a comeback, following the UKA safety guidance.

People have also been able to run in a small group now the rule of six is back :-)

The wonderful junior parkrun has made a comeback in many locations. For example, this week Chelmsford junior parkrun was back. There were 146 young runners there including 50 first timers! They look like they’re having a good time

This part of the return of parkrun looks wonderful and the children are being so good about the safety guidelines.

If so many juniors have discovered the joys of running in lockdown, I wonder how many new running chums we will have when Saturday parkruns are back? :-)

Treasure Hunt
I did a spring-themed treasure hunt this week, and all the treasure hunters did their usual wonderful job. You are a very creative and adventurous group, and I always want to give your submissions 25/25 for being brilliant. I felt very guilty that my bonus items were a bit tricky this week but everyone found at least 1.

Treasure Hunt Bonus Items
You had to find a village or town sign...with a crest/coat of arms on it. A birdhouse or bird feeder...with a bird (I was quite impressed somebody got this one!). A flower...a bluebell. A piece of garden furniture...made of wood. And a selfie...wearing spring yellow or green.

# Treasure Item Bonus Item Bonus Points
VGSGN1 A Village Sign or Sign Post …with a crest/coat of arms +4
BRDHS2 A Birdhouse or Bird Table …with a bird on it +5
GDNFN1 Garden Furniture ...made of wood. +3
FLOWR5 A Flower …which is a bluebell +5
SELFB3 A Selfie …wearing spring green or yellow +3

This week's Treasure Hunt Scores
I feel very bad as a lot of my bonuses turned out to be tricky to track down, but everyone found at least one bonus.

(This contains lots of tables, photos and the like - you may want to paste the link into a grown up browser like Chrome as it'll look better)

Easter weekend - Well, that was certainly a weekend of four seasons...... and depending on when you ran you either needed sun cream, shorts and glasses or a woolly hat, gloves and thermals!

However, 61 of you layered up or down ;-) and completed a 5k walk, jog or run giving yourselves a pretty good excuse to tuck into copious amounts of chocolate and hot cross buns :-)

Results

The following submitted FIVE or more (not)parkrun results this week!
Completing five or more (not) parkruns is quite a challenge - I've only ever managed it once so a very big well done to the eleven folks below - think we need to up the female numbers a little though only 3 compared to the 8 males.... I wonder what next week will bring?

Woo hoo! Ed D got himself a new PB along with 9 other (not) parkrunners. That's pretty awesome - go on give yourselves a huge pat on the back! Special mentions to Amalie 23.20 John Warne 25.47 and Mrs 'Big Dave' Brenda Howard 40.26 who is steadily chipping away at those seconds week after week!

PB 'Near Misses'
A handful of near misses too! No-one in single digits - that's quite a frustrating number to see when you were literally a breath away! But Carolyn at just 10 seconds away was tantalisingly close - maybe next week.

Annnnnd another week of treasure hunting, 22 of you this week and it is getting increasingly challenging to think of new clues and bonus items (although, we know what we've done in previous weeks because, unsurprisingly Len has a spreadsheet ;-) ) - we may throw it open to you folks in the coming weeks to send us your suggestions ( I may week regret saying this, but we do like to keep things interesting!)

Treasure Hunt Bonus Items
The bonus items this week caused some discussion in our house... for example; who says when a tree is big enough to climb? If a squirrel can climb it does that count? Is there an optimum height to be climbed? Oh dear, you know when you wish you just hadn't started something! We did have some truly gorgeous blossom covered trees submitted but they didn't all meet the 'climbability' criteria!
As for the animal - one that lives outside, easy you might think! So do farm cats live in or out - does a barn count as in? or out? Pet rabbits, wild rabbits - a hutch is outside but are they as 'out out' as a wild rabbit?

This week's Treasure Hunt Scores

Vanessa, Yay! You got points for a horse
Vanessa
Annabel has a gorgeous foster horse called Mickey! Bonus points for you too
Annabel
Now Len, they are how you take a picture of a horse... your picture, well....
Len
That egg does look rather scrummy Malc - hope you got one for Denise too!
Malc
Jason going for the cute factor - think the goat and grandchildren can pull it off, not sure about you though Jason ;-)
Jason
I'm not convinced that the tree would be suitable for climbing Emma but boy, look at that selection of eggs and how cute is that fluffy bunny
Healy
A chocolate Hedwig! Who'd have thought it! Now I need to know if it was solid or hollow ;-)
Martin
Amanda going for the 2 items in one photo - nice try!
Amanda
Talking of super cute fluffy bunnies, it appears that Team Hawkins has a new addition - ahh!
Hawkins

And just to finish off our treasure hunting photos, I'm not quite sure what Michelle was trying to say about her family members!
Michelle

Overall Treasure Hunt Leaderboard
Not a huge amount of movement in the leader board... are you there? In fact the top 24 places remain unchanged. Who's your money on for the last few weeks? But with only 9 points between the top three spots there's everthing to play for! And the burning question will Len be able to make all of the prize winners from previous months their bespoke prizes??

Thank you all for continuing to support us and each other whilst we're paused and yes, there is a glimmer of light at the end of this tunnel. Over the next weekend I believe 52 junior parkrun events will be dusting off their finish funnels and powering up the new volunteer apps - we wish them all well and look forward to seeing real results appear once more! To keep up to date with all that happening in the wider parkrun world do keep checking out the parkrun website an facebook page, there's also podcasts to listen to so you can be kept fully informed of the progress which is being made. :-)

Until next time parkie tribe, take care and stay safe.

parkrun pause #53 (20th Mar 2021)

So this is what you've been waiting since the weekend for.
A little glimpse into the sparkly run director's mind, the bonus items for the treasure hunt!

But before you look through that so that you know how you all scored; I'd like to welcome Aileen to parkrun!
Hopefully you'll be getting to enjoy the full experience not before long, we all look forward to meeting you.

It looks like I was a bit too cryptic with one of the items and even more fiendish with the bonus item. Route art in my mind was art made with the route you took, the bonus was the parkrun logo, which no one got. As it was so ambiguous and we got so many good submissions, art spotted on the route has been accepted.

# Treasure Item Bonus Item Bonus Points
COLPK1 Pink …that’s a House +3
RTART1 Route Art …that’s the parkrun Logo +8
FRUIT1 Fruit …that’s a Banana +4
4SIDE1 Four Sided …that’s not a Square +2
SELFA9 Selfie …that has a Tree in the background +3

This week we had 70 participants, which is more than the amount we had for five of our physical events.

7 participants achieved PBs, from the look of how close some of you were, I think we are going to have a few more soon.

As previously mentioned, we welcomed one first timer this week.

parkrun pause #52 (13th Mar 2021)

This is a sad but momentous occasion :-( - 1 year of parkrun pause. Roughly this time last year, I seem to remember I was timekeeping and Chris Sewell was RD at the last regular parkrun before the start of the "pause". I am sure everyone else is looking forward and keeping their fingers crossed for parkrun being "unpaused" this summer :-)

Of course, many things have changed during the pause including some volunteer stalwarts becoming (not)parkrun champions! This week, Tony Perkins (of Tony's Corner fame!) has entered the (not)parkrun 250 club - having logged 252 (not)parkruns since its launch! Very well done on your amazing work, Mr Perkins :-)

Treasure Hunt
Our 22 treasure hunters braved the wind and cold to track down this week's items. Very well done to everyone. I always want to give everyone 25 points for their perseverance and imagination :-)

Treasure Hunt Bonus Items
This week's bonuses were a "W" made of wood, a round sign, a tree that's a sapling, a pub with an animal in the name (excluding a human!) and a windswept selfie.

(This contains lots of tables, photos and the like - you may want to paste the link into a grown up browser like Chrome as it'll look better)

Where's all the usual wordy words? The clever quips? The long rambling passages of gibbering nonsense, interspersed with facts, numbers, history and a smattering of humour?

Well fear ye not my fine furry friends. I recorded all of that in a similarly rambling, gibbering nonsense of a narrated YouTube video where I essentially read this entire run report out for you.

GNpr pp49 Report Report

(Yes, yes, I know, I've got both microphones on so it all sounds very echoey and in my rush I didn't properly set the scene so it's all slightly shifted to the right! All fixable next time!)

Sandra wrote, "Hi Parkies, What a beautiful day for treasure hunting! Here's my haul walked it today as saving my legs for long run tomorrow. I think everything is taller than me :-) so that's an easy one."
Collage 2021-02-20 15_00_23

It's great to see Martin back to running fitness and Treasure Hunting again! Nice smiley face but you went waaaay too tall! ;-)

Victoria wrote, "Toby and I have loved being out enjoying this lovely weather today. Finally much warmer and back in shorts and T-shirts for running!!! :-) The flowers are snowdrops (well it has to be..... there’s so many out and about)!!! Enjoy your weekend."

Malcolm and Edward!

LOL, Doritos and Red Wine Mr Bedlow! Clearly you have very high hopes for the Great Notley Country Park cafe when it re-opens ;-)

So far it looks like Michelle has the largest puddle I've seen so far, alas no bonus points :-(
Great socially distanced post run cuppa with Mum photo though!
2021_02_21_12_28_13_804

We can't see your sleeves Guy but we know full well which top you're wearing! Lovely to see a V25 out there! Hopefully it won't be too long before we can all start volunteering again and we can all wear our V25 shirts!
parkrun Treasure Hunt February 20 2021

Team Hawkins! Only scored points for their puddle and their selfies! I wonder what this will do to the February scores? Next week is the last week of the February 2021 league!

I've yet to try this mystical food that is Marmite and Cheese, alas no bonus points for this - even though it was in a groovy wholemeal pitta!
20210220_131350

Oooh no Emma, Hannah and Jacob! Weren't you too warm in that?
They wrote, "So here’s our stash... That is a giant puddle that we found between Pebmarsh and Colne Engaine...
Post park run snack was daddy’s birthday cake!!
" ... Happy Birthday Dad!
So far, this is the first Footpath Sign we've come across from the Treasure Hunters we've scored so far!

I was so tempted to change the backdrop of your photo Tony to "your corner". All being well, you'll be at your corner soon enough!

Whilst your post (not)parkrun snack didn't earn you any bonus points, it was my favourite!

A scarf Paula!? I'm wondering if you live near Emma, Hannah and Jacob in some sort of chilly bubble ;-)
_20210221_141617

Vanessa! Cool Hedgehog! Good to see the little fella is out and about!
image0 (30)

Jane wasn't wearing a scarf! She wrote, "Puddle in a pothole- strangely enough I didn't have to look too far to find one! The sun was shining so much there's even a reflection of me and my little toes are peeking in at the bottom! Post run snack was some [carrot cake emoji] muffins - straight from the Darraline show! Beautiful spring flowers of which there are snowdrops and primroses because I forgot about the 'taller than me' thing so I had to dash outside and take a picture of the telegraph pole in the dark - we have no streetlights The selfie is definitely a daytime shot with get this - bare arms in February, it really was that warm! ~Jane~"
Sadly no bonus points for your dazzling array of baked goods! (I'm off to compare if I've scored you more points in past weeks than you did...!)

And finally, Wifey Paula, who doesn't get any bonus points for sending in her Treasure Haul LAST! I mean really, there's no excuse - she's sat TWO FEET away on the other sofa! Hold on a sec', is that a photo of me in the background embracing the lovely surrounding countryside!?...

When will parkrun be starting?
There were announcements this week with regards to the end of social distancing, the lockdown and something that's approaching a return to "normality".

Click here to jump to that bit of the video to hear me talking about how to find about parkrun's roadmap and return to normality.

I really enjoyed making the little run report slide deck and talking through it with you. There was a lot of chuckling to myself as I made it. Don't be expecting a groovy video every week! Click here to jump to my closing bit in the video.

Take care out there chums and hang in there. Stick to the rules and we'll be coming out the other side and we'll be back in the park before you know it!

Twit twoo ;-) Well - that was your Valentines (non) parkrun event. Under normal circumstances (remember those!) there would have been a bit of dressing up to be had; in previous years we've had the MRG gang out in full force and I think that one year Michelle dressed up as black cat and we've had folks dressed in all sorts - I'm off to see if I can find some photos to slot in here!

I found this!! From February 2015! - and no the park wasn't empty! We were all in front of her :-D

This week the weather was maybe a degree or two warmer! But basically still around the freezing your bits off temperature. It didn't however stop 55 of you getting out there to get a least one 5k logged onto the parkrun system - well done you lot!

As Laura Leah Unas with barcode number A6928058 was the last person in the World to register for parkrun (don't ask how we know this stuff!) we're going to take a guess that Hayley Caunt, with barcode A6924051 just some 4,007 registrations earlier decided to register for parkrun, popped on her running shoes and went out for her first (not)parkrun on Saturday with a "feels like" temperature of -8c.

Now I don't know about you, but we think that's pretty cool. Well done you Hayley, you rock.

Annnnnd just a few more interesting Great Notley parkunner totals for you...

495 PB's have been achieved in the (not)parkrun/parkrun paused events
243 of you have taken part in at least one (not)parkrun/parkrun paused event*.
60 of you have taken part in the Great Notley parkrun Treasure Hunt!
59 of you have only ever taken part in just the one (not)parkrun/parkrun paused event :-(
32 of you who have finished MORE (not)parkrun events than "real" parkruns.
17 is the number of you who have NEVER taken part in a "real" parkrun before!
9 of you have taken part in EVERY (not)parkrun/parkrun paused event since we started*.

* First virtual "parkrun paused" event was held in the second week of parkrun being paused, 28th March 2021.

How many of those totals do you fall into?

PB 'Near Misses'
Just the one PB from Ed this week but Matthew Birch was a mere 7 seconds away and take a peek at Acacia's time - just 10 seconds off and big sister Saffy 21 seconds - wonder if there's some sibling rivalry going on there! Keep a close eye on the results over the next few weeks folks things could be hotting up in the Hawkins household ;-)

Treasure Hunt

The treasure hunters are still out in force, 19 of you this week and incredibly no one has yet been escorted off a property, been told off for loitering or asked why they are taking photos of themselves in questionable poses - Yes Len, Jason and Guy I am of course referring to you three in particular this week.

We didn't have an entry from one of our regular contributors this week - poor Martin Gypps has a bad back and it's prevented him from doing very much at all. The Core Team have sent their well wishes and I know that everyone one else will join us when we say we hope that he makes a speedy recovery :-)

Treasure Hunt Bonus Items

**Note to Self** Think very, VERY carefully about your choice of words for future treasure hunts!

So, the word of the week was 'sultry' - Never, did I think it would get the response it did. And as for Jason and his big chopper - well! All I can say is that you lot are incorrigible ;-)

Top scoring went to Michelle :-)

# Treasure Item Bonus Item Bonus Points
SELFA4 A Sultry Selfie ...blowing a kiss or looking romantic (or needing a poo!) +4

parkrun pause #47 (6th Feb 2021)

(This contains lots of tables, photos and the like - you may want to paste the link into a grown up browser like Chrome as it'll look better)

Crikey heck that was an interesting few days of running thanks to some rather chilly and challenging weather! Well done to everyone who braved it – the Saturday crew definitely had it a little easier before the white stuff settled. And as for those who went out on Sunday – especially those who went across muddy trails and through gigantic, deep and partially frozen puddles in road trainers – well no words! (Jane in the Mud!)

Hands up who has been out in the last couple of days too? Keep ‘em up if you’ve had a bit of a bambi moment! It can be such a heart in mouth moment when you really think you’re going to go….Please stay upright and safe you lot.

I know that many of you will know John Warne and will have seen lots of his exploits through Facebook or Strava but… Great Notley’s very own John ’52 halves in a year’ Warne has not just been busy clocking up the half marathons over the past year he’s also been an integral part of ... NRG (am I the only one who thinks it’s so cool that that sounds like energy? Yes – oh, best I be quiet then!) Anyway- Notley Running Group... John has written the following all about them:

84848928_2635580226554760_8830219711355551744_n (1)

This (unofficial) group of runners was formed just over a year ago when the Great Notley parkrun was cancelled one week due to the weather and course conditions. We all met that day at The Booking Hall Cafe and did our first unofficial ‘not’ parkrun. Following on from this during the first lockdown last year we still met up via video link after we had all done our solo individual ‘not’ parkruns (the official (not)parkrun had not started but Great Notley created a virtual parkrun as early as April). (How on the ball were we?!)

During the year we ran together when possible abiding by the rules and still meet up via video link in this current lockdown. Also last year we decided that we wanted our own T shirt with our group known as NRG (or “Energy” – geddit? Well, we like it!). Sorry, MRG we are not trying to copy you.

147368677_4087275714618580_5104821721138326942_n

Group members and what they got up to:

Ashman (Ashwin) - 2020/2021 continued to produce fast (not)parkrun times, brought his sanity into question by running a back garden marathon and is doing RED February
Chris 2020/2021 maintains his regular exercise by going out 3 to 4 times a week

Christine 2020/2021 continues to run but now regularly also joins PT Sharon Alexander (Witness The Fitness)
John - 2020 52 Half Marathons in 52 weeks. Parkrun award winner 2020.

Phil - 2020/2021 turned 80, was a 2020 parkrun award winner for 320 miles of walking during the summer and despite having covid in December, recently went for his first run with Steve after over a year of not running

Roger - 2020 carried on running but is also doing a lot more cycling these days

Steve - 2020 Regularly pounding the streets (or Flitch) with John and achieved Lands End to John O Groats virtual run

Stacey - 2020/2021 running streak of over 400 days and still going.
And ANOTHER parkrun award winner last year Steph - 2020 moved to Cumbria, the hills were not big enough in Essex!"

Thanks John - You're all a very busy and active bunch and lovely Steph we miss you!

Results
A whole plethora of results this week and this first lot always make me feel really lazy and wondering to myself just how many hours they have in their days! So well done to the Fantastic Four who have completed 7 5k's this week! Top, top effort!

Len Marten 7
Paula Jarvis 7

62 not parkrunners completed at least one 5k this week with four of you achieving a PB - that's pretty impressive and I'm guessing that Sunday wasn't the day you did it - but let me know if I'm wrong...

Treasure Hunt
So.. for those of you who didn’t know it’s my birthday this week and yes, I’m planning a big bash – you know sending out all the invites, preparing the sausage rolls making piles of sandwiches and stocking up on the bottles of fizz! Oh… well, maybe I’m not… another lockdown birthday it is then! But hey, that means more cake for me so not all bad then.
The treasure hunt had a bit of a ‘What do you know about Jane’ theme to it …

Treasure Hunt Bonus Items
The number (and I was a bit generous here) was either a 2 (for February) or 11 (my birthday date) or my age of 21- stop laughing you lot, it’s true – well if you add on 30+ years of experience it is! The closest was Paula M with her lovely clear number 10, but not quite close enough. The other Paula, Paula J submitted a whole bus timetable but it was just tooooo tricky to read so I’m afraid I couldn’t give her any bonus points for that.

If you were wearing my favourite colour in your selfie, then bonus points are coming your way! Paula J’s coat earnt her a bonus but unfortunately not for Martin – least said about his coat the better!

The quest for parallel lines resulted in a whole load of double yellows!! Michelle looked as though she’d discovered some freshly painted ones and Martin’s were going round the bend! Bonus points went to those folks who found parallel lines which were above the ground!

Steps – cue a whole host of comments about a ‘tragedy’ well it certainly wasn’t an issue for anyone who founds sets of steps which weren’t wooden! We also discovered that Len’s cat Jaci is pretty nimble venturing up the loft ladder and Edward (Denise and Malc’s dog) was performing his best catalogue pose mid-way up a flight! Vanessa’s dog also posed beautifully at the top of some point worthy brick steps.

Not a single one of you managed to nab the bonus points for the sign this week! We had roundabout signs, huge signs, street signs, fire hydrants, speed limits, road closed signs and danger of death signs (eek, treasure hunting is not supposed to be that extreme!) What I was hoping for was a sign with a fraction on it – well you know how much I love maths!

# Treasure Item Bonus Item Bonus Points
RDSGN7 A Road Sign ...with fractions, as I love maths ;-)  +4
SELFA3 A Selfie …wearing my fave colour, purple. +4
STEPS1 Steps ...that were not wooden. +4
PRLNS1 Parallel Lines ...that were not on the ground … and a soundtrack to my youth! +4
NUMBR1 A Number …either 2 (the month) or 11 (the day) or I would have accepted 21 +4

Overall Treasure Hunt Leaderboard
… almost the last bit of the treasure hunt news... Simon H has retained his hold on the top spot by the very tips of his fingers… 1 teeny, tiny point is all that's keeping him there! Will it last for much longer?? Oh, the excitement - I could crush a grape ;-)

Before I finish I must just mention the fact that one parkrunner submitted two lots of treasure hunts because she believed she'd spotted a theme in my clues - a musical clue at that. I was so impressed that I wanted to give her some extra points and prizes but I was overruled by Len, he said we'd given away our quota of speedboats...so in case you didn't see it here's Vanessa's treasure hunt musical montage and I think it's fantastic :-D

I’m not passing the RD reigns or treasure hunting box on to anyone else this week you have me setting the clues again! However, given that it’s going to be Valentine’s Day on Sunday I promise, from the bottom of my heart (see quick link there) that the bonuses will not be too tricky!

See you at the weekend parkies
