Inaugural Guernsey parkrun 9 April 2016

After months in the planning, Event Director Lorna O'Donnell and her team of volunteers were very excited to get the very first Guernsey parkrun underway. Our new home at Pembroke is a mix of coastal footpaths and tracks across common land and after a few dry days the route was in great condition.

We were thrilled to have parkrun Ambassadors Andrew Lawrence and Geoff Miles in attendance (Osterley parkrun) and after spending months helping us with the set up of our event, they both took the opportunity to run the course. With 453 parkrun runs between them, they were sporting the coveted parkrun milestone shirts......something for us to aim for!

We were also pleased to welcome several visitors from the UK, including friends from Wimbledon, Chippenham, Woodhouse Moor, Conkers, Great Lines, Milton Keynes, Darlington and Moors Valley parkruns. Thank you all for your most welcome support. We had no idea how many parkrunners to expect and so were delighted to see 102 on the start line at Pembroke. The weather was a little chilly and, with high tide coinciding with our start time, we had a bit of spray coming over the sea wall trying to catch out the unsuspecting!

We had a full compliment of marshals out on the course to make sure no-one got lost amongst the gorse. Nigel Hurford, local Director with parkrun sponsor Intersport, was on duty back at the finish line, having gallantly volunteered to scan the bar codes. He then surprised our finishers with a special gift of a "parkrun teddy" to mark our inaugural event; thank you Intersport!

The honour of first finisher spot went to Clayton Barrett from Great Lines parkrun, Medway with a time of 18.57 and of course he set a new course record. Clayton caused us a bit of consternation during results processing as he inadvertently presented us with his father's barcode giving Mr Barrett senior an amazing age grading percentage but we worked it out in the end!

First lady home was Lee Merrien Running group member Nicola Smith in a time of 24.54; well done Nicola!

It was lovely to see some juniors join us for the event including the Dunkley girls, Hannah and Louise from Milton Keynes and local brothers Ethan and Declan Gilman.

Well done too to our walkers who kept up a brisk pace to get home in well under 50 minutes, including tail runner Kerry, who was sporting a very fetching furry tail attached to the back of her high-viz bib!

Thank you everyone and hope to see some of you next week.
