Guernsey parkrun welcomes new GP practice partner

We are very pleased to announce that Island Health has been certified by the Royal College of General Practitioners and parkrun UK as a certified partner with Guernsey parkrun.

This groundbreaking initiative which launched last year aims to improve the health and wellbeing of healthcare staff, patients and carers and encourages GP’s to “prescribe” outdoor physical activity where appropriate rather than medication.

GP’s and staff from Island Health took part in GP Pledge Day on 1 June, along with over 800 practices across the UK which helped raise awareness of parkrun across the health sector and help promote sustained participation by those who are least active or have health conditions.

Inactivity is a leading cause of premature illness and death in the UK, and GPs and their teams play a key role in empowering their patients to get more active and improve their health.

Dr Zoe Williams, RCGP Clinical Champion for Physical Activity & Lifestyle and TV Doctor said: “The parkrun practice initiative has been a huge success so far, with over 800 practices signing up in the first year. We’ve heard incredible stories from patients, their relatives and GP staff.

From getting their smile back, to improving their physical health, to feeling a part of their community again, the benefits are wide and varied, and absolutely everyone is welcome.”

Professor Helen Stokes Lampard, GP and Chair of RCGP said: “The RCGP partnership with parkrun has captured the imagination of GPs and their teams. The walk or run approach makes exercise accessible and inclusive”.

Guernsey parkrun is a free timed 5km run or walk which takes place every Saturday morning at 9am at Pembroke. All ages from 4 years up can take part and all abilities are welcome. Organised entirely by volunteers we are there to encourage you to improve your health and well being and to connect with your community. We meet up in the Beach House Cafe after the event and chat to new friends and old over a cup of tea or coffee. Come and join us, it’s fun!

We look forward to meeting GP’s, practice staff and Island Health patients over the coming weeks. All participants and those wishing to volunteer must first register with parkrun at
