Gunnersbury parkrun, the non-event: 18th August 2012

Non-event at Gunnersbury 18/08/2012
About 40 runners turned up regardless of the cancellation this week. I had a feeling this would happen as not everyone will think to check the news page for cancellations, and many of our runners do not use Facebook or Twitter. For those who did come along, the reason for the cancellation was pretty obvious as the preparations for the Mela were well underway. There were huge tents erected, barriers across the running route and a number of caravans and trucks in position over our start/finish straight. After explaining the situation, it seemed like everyone decided to run anyhow. The normal route wasn't really possible, so the collective decision was taken to try going in the opposite direction. At this point I heard a few whoops of excitement at the prospect of getting to run down, rather than up, the hill! Well done to all of those who ran today in the scorchng heat, whether it was around Gunnersbury park, the surrounding area or at another parkrun venue. See you all back at Gunnersbury next week.

Cancellation – 18/08/2012

It is with regret that I have to announce that this week's parkrun is cancelled.

This is due to the preparations for the London Mela, which is taking place on Sunday afternoon. We had hoped to still go ahead but since the Mela event team cannot guarantee it will be safe for runners, the Gunnersbury parkrun team feel this is the best option.

Please consider visiting another local parkrun at Richmond park, Wormwood Scrubs, Old Deer park, Wimbedon Common, Crane park or Bushy park.

I am sure you will be as disappointed as I am, but we will be back next week! Plus, it does mean that there is a festival in the park on Sunday afternoon! Let's support the team putting the event together by joining in - http://www.londonmela.org/

Again apologies, and hope to see you as normal on 25th August.

Arlene, Event Director
