Volunteering - get involved with your parkrun!

Your parkrun depends on you volunteering 3 times a year. If you'd like to be included on our volunteer mailing list, please drop us an email - Hackney-MarshesHelpers@parkrun.com. We are still looking for volunteers to fill vacant positions in December and we welcome hearing from you if you are able to help.

Remember - we don't want our regular runners to be penalised in the yearly points competition just because they volunteered, so every runner gets full points for volunteering on up to three occasions per year.

Race 47 – May 7th, 2011 – RACE REPORT

This week saw 30 runners brave the imminent downpours to try out the new course and new start/finish area. Thanks to the ever wonderful volunteers, we managed to get the new course pegged out and marshalled in plenty of time.

First off, apologies to those runners who gathered at the old start location - we managed to scoop up most of you before the start of the event and point you in the right direction towards the Hackney Marshes Centre. I know that a few of you who came close to 9am missed us, but good on you for running the old course anyway and we look forward to seeing you at the new start soon.

The low-down on the new course

The start consists of a 100m dash on grass, before popping through a gap in the hedge and on to the main marshes path. The route continues along a tree-lined, leafy (and sometimes very buggy!) tarmac path in an anticlockwise direction around the marshes. The course then opens up onto the main marsh, before passing the old changing sheds (and our old starting point), before joining the Lea Navigation Channel path towards the turnaround point, our friendly marshal Tim and the half way mark. Runners then complete a u-turn, some more efficiently than others, before following the same route back for 2.5km to the Hackney Marshes Centre and the finish line.

The results

The first face to peek around the hedges and bound towards the finish was the consistently impressive Bertie POWELL of Woodford Green AC who won in a time of 16:50. That makes a tidy dozen wins for Bertie at Hackney Marshes, so well done! In his first 5k of the season and first run at Hackney Marshes, Robin JONES took second by 30 seconds recording 17:20. Robin is also one of our local Sweatshop reps, so good job and thanks for the vouchers! Neil COOK of Victoria Park Harriers, who was also a first timer, placed third in a time of 17:46.

Elin SKAGERBERG stormed home as the first woman in a time of 18:57. This was her second win and due to the torrential downpour, her barcode did not read. So thanks for getting in touch after the event to claim your well deserved position! Linda INGRAM from Victoria Park Harriers was the second woman home in a time of 23:14, and she recorded a new PB in the process. Dorothea GARTLAND placed third in a time of 23:48.

The verdict?

Considering the downpour that unleashed its’ fury after about 10 minutes of running, 14 runners recorded PBs – the new course is proving to be fast and accurate, the only challenge is navigating the turnaround point at half way – we are working on how we can make this better for you. The feedback was great; considering there were lots of soggy runners: the new course cuts out the desolate east marshes, some runners prefer the certainty of a ‘there and back’ course, others commented that they preferred not knowing how far they had run, and people said that it was great to see others running on the course.

Until next Saturday, have a great week and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

This week there were 6 first timers.

4 runners recorded PBs, bringing the total number since the Hackney Marshes started to 346. In this time, 415 runners from 52 different clubs have completed the race 1327 times covering a distance of 6635 kilometers.

Event Number 39 – March 12th, 2011 – Report

A bright, fairly clear morning, with not much wind, certainly no rain, and even a little hint of warmth.  Could this be the reason we had a lot of PB's set today?  In all we had fourteen!!! and others were very close to their Best.  Special mention has to go to Michelle Baxter Wickham who bettered her PB by 2 minutes and 47 seconds, and Tom Chappell who improved his by 49 seconds.

We also had four new runners, so welcome to you guys.  We hope you enjoyed it and we will see you back again.

First finisher was Bertie Powell, in his ninth appearance (of which he has finished first, eight times!) with a very impressive of 15:38 - only eight seconds off his PB.  Bertie also topped the Age-Graded competition, with 82.52%.  Next was Simon Freeman in 16:42 - a time which smashed his previous best by 31 seconds.  Third home was Ben Wickham (who went the right way this time!) and finished in 17:28 - another one who took a chunk off his PB, by some 44 seconds (and not just because he decided not to add on another 400m!).

In her 21st appearance Linda Ingram was the first female past the post, for the second time, in a time of 23:27.  This beat her previous best by 2 seconds.  Michaela Glendinning was next in 23:58.  Stacey Dougherty, who was running a parkrun for the first time, came third with 24:46.

In the points competition Dave Mulvany has a lead of 350 points over second placed Peter Rains.  Linda Ingram leads Alison Hawkes by 232 in the women's competition.

A couple of other points:

1) We could always do with more volunteers - in the last month we have had one week with no volunteers at all, and another with just two.  As has been said many times before, parkrun only exists by the help of volunteers.  It is your parkrun, so please give some time up to enable others to enjoy the experience.

2) Could we please remind you to bring your barcodes, in paper form, as printed off the website.  Our scanners are unable to read the barcodes if they have been enlarged, minimalised, or are on your mobile phone.  It creates extra work, having to enter details in manually, so please remember to bring the paper codes, so that we can get your results out swiftly.

Until next week...and let us hope the weather is as kind as it was today.....

Race 29 – December 18th, 2010

Well, it was touch and go for a while however, thankfully, having inspected the course on the morning of the run it was decided that it would be safe to run, and this proved to be the case - and all before more snow bucketed down.

As to be expected, though, the number of runners was down on previous weeks, with eleven wrapping up warm and braving the elements.  Perhaps even more impressive was the number of people willing to stand around in the cold so that the run could happen; we had five volunteers (who all resisted the temptation to lob snowballs at the finishing runners!).  A big thanks to them.

Now for you stat lovers out there...the stats:

It was girl power as the first two finishers were of the fairer(!) sex; firstly Holly Gilbert in a time of 20:58, followed by fellow clubmate Emily Mosedale in 21:32.  Behind them was first male finisher Peter Rains, with 22:13; Jeremy Gill: 23:20; Nathan Copping: 23:24.  The third women, Wendy, finished in 24:18 - unfortunately without her barcode and not being able to find her name on the system, the time has not been recorded/registered against her.

Not surprisingly, due to the unfoot conditions, no PB's were recorded, though we did have one first-timer.  Holly Gilbert, as well as leading the finishers, also won the age-grading competition with 70.67.  In the points competition Dave Mulvanny still holds the lead with 269 points over second placed Peter Rains and Alison Hawkes still leads Linda INGRAM by 567 in the women's competition.

Till next time...
