Harrogate parkrun #379 Run Report

Another dry day on the Stray. Early set up was in atmospheric mist but that soon burned away and we ended the event in sunshine. A massive thanks to the brilliant team of volunteers this week who got up early and manned the various roles to make this week's parkrun happen for everyone. Some of the team were new to volunteering and said how much they'd enjoyed it, and those trying new roles also got a different perspective, including seeing the start and the rampage towards the bench. Your shouts of 'thank you' as you run/jog/walk past the volunteers also mean a lot so keep them coming :-)

We had lots of milestones achieved this week. Finlay, Ben and Thomas (10th 5km parkrun), Liam Mallow, Steve Newbould and Josh Wood (50 parkruns), Christine Smith (100 parkruns) and a parkruntastic 250 parkruns for Jeremy Scott. Hugh congratulations to you all and we hope you look forward to receiving your t-shirts. Remember, drop us an email or speak to the RD beforehand if you'd like a shout out, don't be shy!

Nice to see special leggings were worn for the occasion.

Lots of lovely chatter took place in the cafe. Croissants, bacon sarnies, granola and multiple coffees were all enjoyed and you know it's been a lovely post parkrun natter when you leave the cafe after midday. Please do come along and join us.

Harrogate parkrun #334 run report

Many thanks to Harrogate Harriers' Simon Moffatt for the Harrogate parkrun #334 run report.

Harrogate Harriers came along for a take over this week and it was all-the-fun-of-the-fair with the Stray fairground at the far end of the course. We had roundabout ten pacers leading the way as we threaded our way through the amusements. Thankfully everyone was able to dodgem. Our aim was to keep everyone on an even pace. Don’t just waltz-along, but don’t go strain yourself.

A total of 446 runners got into the swing of it this week and 57 clocked up a PB. They were pleased as Punch*. We had 49 runners coming to Harrogate parkrun for the first time. It was lovely to see you all. Don’t be shy – please come again.

Mike Burrett was the fastest runner this week, finishing in only 17:13. Like taking candyfloss from a baby. Speaking of babies, coasting along at the back of the pack was Rosalyn Moore with baby Poppy out for her first parkrun in the buggy. A real rollercoaster.

You know what they say: the miserable people go straight across the Stray. The merry go round it.

(*that isn’t a pun. They really were pleased as Punch)

Harrogate parkrun #185 run report

Saturday was another great parkrunday.

Sean and the amazing volunteer team were there setting up the course and funnel, whilst trying to keep a hold of everything, on what was a fairly windy morning. But then there really is nowhere to hide on the Stray, as you all well know! We were joined at parkrun #185 by 380 runners wanting nothing more on a Saturday than to jump out of bed, have a catch up with friends whilst flying round the 5K course. And that's exactly what you did.

Our first finishers this week were Emma Robinson and Stephen Ellison, brilliant running. And also to the 64 runners who ran a personal best on Saturday, many congratulations. There were also 35 first timers who decided that Saturday was the day to make their Harrogate parkrun debut, welcome to our parkrun.

This week we congratulate 3 runners who have reached parkrun milestones. Congratulations to Rosalyn Moore who joined the 100 club and Clare Taylor and Max Clark who both joined the 50 club on Saturday. Awesome running folks!

Harrogate parkrun #161 run report

With an awesome team of volunteers looking after proceedings for event #161, and a fantastic 267 runners we had another fabulous parkrun at Harrogate on Saturday. Albeit a very slushy, muddy run bringing back lots of memories of school cross country! Despite the conditions, 21 first timers joined in the fun and we had an impressive 9 personal bests - how do they do it?!?!? Great running especially at this time of year!

This week we see Paul Hynard reach the dizzy heights of 100 parkruns - congratulations Paul. Also join me in congratulating Lorna Maxwell, who as junior joins the 10 club. Fabulous running by both of you.

Harrogate parkrun #158 Run Report

Harrogate parkrun #158 Run Report

On Friday evening as the wind was howling outside it definitely crossed my mind that we would, unfortunately, have to cancel event #158 and our last of our 3rd year of Harrogate parkrun.

So early on Saturday morning a small determined army of dedicated individuals inspected the course and thankfully were able to decide on a suitable route. We than had the task of setting everything up, which was definitely a challenge with the Stray being so exposed and a number of us spent moments chasing bits of kit, finish tokens etc. across the grass at various points on Saturday morning. It was, as always, then fabulous for us to see at 9 am, 191 brave (or mad!) runners set off on their weekly 5K as usual. By 10 am all runners had been amazingly marshaled around the course, timed and scanned through the funnel and everything was packed away so we could pop over to Caffe Marconi to process the results and have a well deserved warm drink. Don't forget, everyone is welcome to join us at Caffe Marconi in Princes Square, for a catch up about all things parkrun and to see how the results are processed.

So this week we need to say a massive thank you to all of our volunteers who ventured out in the cold, rain and wind to make this week's run happen. I'm sure everyone is truly grateful!

Amazingly, we welcomed 14 first timers to Harrogate parkrun, 14 runners recorded PBs this week and we welcomed Mark Gibson into the 50 club as well. Brilliant running everyone! These milestones certainly deserve a round of applause!

Just a few more items for you.....

Harrogate parkrun #156 run report

What a brilliant couple of days... if you're like me, you might have felt a bit of deja vu this morning or completely lost track of which day it actually is! Not to worry, we can do it all again next week :D

Our Christmas Day special attracted a smashing 236 parkrunners... fancy dress was the order of the day with plenty of santas, a few elves, a crocodile (of course), Batman (yeah huh), a couple of angels and at least one Jack Frost! This was our best Christmas turnout ever and the Sun came out to celebrate with us... always a warm and tremendous spirit on this event every year. Our first finishers were Louis Maurice and Sharon Hardcastle and they were joined by 13 Personal Bests and an amazing 21 Harrogate first timers... 20 of whom were completing their very first parkrun ever! David Harrison, Emma Prentis, David Harris and Nick Smith completed their 50th parkruns and Tom Mitchell completed his 100th parkrun... what a day and great running by all!

Today, our #156 was a little quieter and we had a marvellous 157 parkrunners out and about in the sunshine... perhaps some were having a lie in, recovering from too much turkey or resting after the Chevin Chase! First finishers were Ian Bush and Hannah Oldroyd. 9 parkrunners grabbed a PB in the last run of 2014 and we had 17 steely first timers. David Nield saw this morning as the perfect time to complete his 50th parkrun and he wasn't wrong... well done David!

Phew... it's exhausting just thinking about the last 3 days. Looking to the future, we will NOT be holding a New Year's Day event at Harrogate.

With a bit of planning, you can complete 2 parkruns on New Year's Day as parkruns can locally adjust their start times. More details of events and start times can be found on the parkrun UK Christmas Compendium (click this link).  A number of Harrogate parkrunners are planning to take advantage of the wonderful hospitality of 2 other local parkruns... Leeds (9am start) and Temple Newsam (10am start) with a short 5-ish mile run or drive in between :D Whatever you decide to do, please plan ahead and above all do it safely.

Next week also sees the start of the fantastic Jantastic 2015, which is a brilliant way to keep you running motivated through the next few months and into Spring. Kati Tyler has set up a Harrogate parkrun team called HG PARKRUN PALS... everyone is welcome to join... let's show the world what we can do! Click the link to find out more and sign up...

That's all from me. Our next 'normal' Harrogate parkrun will be Saturday 3rd January 2015 with Ted Welton and Paula Prentis at the helm... they can't do it on their own, so please volunteer if you can. Enjoy your week, folks and we'll see you next year.

Harrogate parkrun #153 run report

It looked like it was going to be a very chilly one yesterday... the promised 'weather bomb' fizzled out and once the sun came up we had quite good conditions... bright, sunny, a little cool but fairly solid underfoot.

We had a full team of fantastic volunteers including 5 mighty juniors - thanks Isobel, Joseph, Louisa, Jonathan and Archie -  and it's days like yesterday when they really earn our gratitude and applause. If you think it's cold when running... how about standing on a corner in the shade for 40 minutes or so.... brrrrrr. Thanks team - we really could not do Harrogate parkrun each week without you.

We had a total of 209 parkrunners including 17 Harrogate first timers (hurry back now!). Our fantastic first finishers were Charles Casey and Sharon Hardcastle and they were joined by 27 marvelous parkrunners who decided that Saturday the 12th December was the day to bag themselves a pre-Christmas personal best. Well done to all of you.

Yesterday also saw Simon Moffatt break into the 100 Club and David Phelan into the 50 Club... great commitment guys and onwards to 250 and 100 respectively!

Couple of exciting announcements, before we go:

  • BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 takes place tonight and fellow parkrunner Jo Pavey is shortlisted with 9 other amazing athletes. Jo has had an incredible and inspirational year and “In 2014, less than 10 months after giving birth to her daughter, this lady smashed the world record over 5,000m for a female over 40 years of age and then won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games, finishing behind a pair of young Kenyans in a world-class race. Ten days later she headed to the European Championships and won her first major title, conquering a talented field a little more than a month before turning 41. In doing so, she became the oldest female (by three years) to win a gold medal in the history of the championships.”  You can read more at Gavin Megaw's blog RunHabit.com and if you agree; support Jo and be ready to cast your vote later...
  • It'll be Harrogate parkrun's 3rd birthday next month and we'll be planning a special post event celebration at Caffe Marconi's to recognise some of your amazing achievements during the last year.
  • Jantastic 2015 is also on it's way and Kati Tyler has set up a Harrogate parkrun team called HG PARKRUN PALS... everyone is welcome to join... let's show the world what we can do! Jantastic is a fantastic challenge starting 5th January and is a brilliant way to keep your running motivation high throughout winter. Click the link to find out more...

That's all from me. Next week you have the awesome Tracy Iles in the Run Director hot seat... the roster is currently looking a little light, so please help out and volunteer if you can... remember we ask everyone to volunteer at least 3 times a year... and Santa will be keeping count!  Have a brilliant week with whatever you are doing and we'll see you next Saturday.

Harrogate parkrun event #147 run report

Another fantastic morning on the Stray on Saturday, the sun was out and with very few clouds in the sky, there’s no better way to start your weekend than a lovely run with family and friends. This week we had the added obstacle of trying to avoid the set up of the Stray bonfire when selecting the running course, which made for an interesting start to the parkrun #147! Thank you to all of the volunteers for rallying round together on Saturday – you were all awesome! Despite the hectic start to the morning we set off this week’s 292 brilliant parkrunners and another great Harrogate event was enjoyed by all.

Harrogate parkrun run report #139

Harrogate parkrun run report #139

Having moved house just over a week ago, I thought we were all sorted, but apparently not! Opening the curtains on Saturday morning and seeing the pretty damp weather outside filled me that sense of dread when you realise you don’t know where your waterproof is! I then thought, what the heck, skin’s waterproof right. I wasn't the only one not to be put off by Saturday’s damp start. A fabulous 267 of you brightened up the Harrogate morning and joined us for Harrogate parkrun #139.

A big thank you has to go out to all of the volunteers this week, who despite the prospect of being out in the rain for what can be a couple of hours, turned up as enthusiastic as always and set up the course. Thank fully, just in time for the start, the rain eased and we were given a rest bite whilst we ran our 3 laps.

This week we have to say massive congratulations to Karen Dammone and David Hart for reaching 50 runs and Alex Johnson for completing 10 runs this week; tremendous running all of you!!!

It was also a great week to see lots of old faces back at Harrogate parkrun and to have a good old catch up in Caffe Marconi, you really should join us if you can! There’s nothing better than a brew and a catch up post run, plus you get to see the magic of parkrun at its best. Well normally you do, when the IT gremlins aren’t at work. We must thank this week’s Run Director Sean Brennan for persevering and eventually getting those results processed later that afternoon, thanks Sean!!!!

Well done to all those parkrunners who ran the many Half Marathons this week, from the Great North Run to the Cheltenham Half and the Vale of York to Edinburgh and all those in between!! Fantastic running everyone! Do let us know if you are flying the Harrogate flag at any events.
