Harrow parkrun #235

The weather forecast for this morning was not promising, with the temperature predicted to be close to freezing. That turned out to be true, and with the added hazard of fog we wondered how many people would have bothered to get out of bed. However, we were surprised to have one of our largest turnouts of 274 runners, and the sun had even started to come out before we had finished.

Our first finisher this week was Harry Turner, and the first lady was Harrow first-timer Harriet Williamson.

We had a number of tourists, with visitors from Yorkshire, Essex, Birmingham and Horsham, and we hope that you enjoyed your run at Harrow.

Well done to the 47 runners who achieved a pb, welcome to the 37 first-timers who we hope will become regular parkrunners.

Today we said goodbye and a big thank-you to Clive Gee who has been a regular volunteer, run director and runner at Harrow parkrun since it started.  He is moving to Edinburgh to start a new career and we wish him all the best.  He tells us that there is a parkrun five minutes from his new house so I am sure that he will be a regular participant there as well.

As usual, a big thank you to all the volunteers, and a reminder that if you want to help out, have a look at the roster for the next few weeks and send an email to harrowhelpers@parkrun.com saying when you would like to volunteer and if you prefer any particular task.  Please also include your parkrun number in the email.

Denis Foxley, harrow parkrun director

We have been really lucky with the Saturday morning weather during this very mixed Summer and today was no exception.  Perfect running weather, not too warm and with a pleasant gentle breeze. This produced 35 pbs from a large turnout of 231 participants.

There were only a few visitors, from Long Eaton in Nottingham, and Leeds, and I hope you enjoyed your run at Harrow.

We also welcomed 23 first timers hope you had a good enough time to return next week.

Special mentions this week go to:

Malcolm Smith for completing his 50th parkrun, (and thanks for the delicious fruit.)

Stephen Goldsack for his 200th run.

Tony Scott for winning 4 silver medals in his age group in the World Transplant Games.

Stuart McGowan for winning his age group in the British Sprint Triathlon Championships.

Our first man today was Jim Cooper in 18.14, with Lucy Ashe first lady, and 4th overall in 18.46.

Don't forget it is only two weeks to the Harrow Half Marathon so if you want to register either as a runner or volunteer you can still do it via this website: http://harrowhalfmarathon.co.uk/

There were quite a few runners today who forgot their barcodes, so they come up as "Unknown" in the results.  Please remember to bring your barcode with you every week!

A big thank you to all the volunteers at parkrun today, and please consider volunteering in future events, especially if you have not done so before. Either write your name on the sheet on Saturday morning, or email harrowhelpers@parkrun.com. You can see more details about volunteering here: https://www.parkrun.org.uk/harrow/volunteer/

Hope to see you next week,

Well, what a contrast to the glorious weather we had last week. This morning was cold, wet and windy, which evidently put some people off as numbers were well down from previous weeks.  However, the rain had stopped before the start and conditions were actually good for running once we got going, as demonstrated by the 29 PBs achieved.

We had visitors from Ashford, Greenwich, Derby and Hemel Hempstead and several people said how much they enjoyed the course and friendly atmosphere at Harrow.

Well done to our first finishers this week, Kevin Mackin for the men in a new pb, and Kayla Saunders for the ladies, with Olivia Matharu not far behind her in the battle of the 11-14 year-olds.

We had a few anniversaries this week: David Harrington and Nicholas Marchant on their 50th runs, and Neil Court on his 200th.

A special mention also to our chief marshal Joe Turner for his 200th volunteering role, he has scarcely missed a week since Harrow Parkrun began.

On the subject of volunteers, if you run regularly please consider helping out occasionally. You can either write your name on the sheet on the desk, or send an email to harrowhelpers@parkrun.com.

Have a good week,

Denis Foxley,

Welcome to the run report for the 210th Harrow parkrun. Another perfect morning for running was reflected in the 51 PBs achieved amongst our 230 runners, a very high proportion.

The first finisher was Harry Turner in 18:28 followed by Anthony Lewis in 18:51. The first lady was Jo Brookes in a new pb off 23:00 followed by Shilpa Narayan in 23:20 which was also a pb.

We welcomed a number of visitors from places as diverse a Yorkshire, Belfast and Kenya. Apologies if I missed some others!

Quite a few runners also took part in the Hatch End Triathlon last week so well done to all of you and I hope you enjoyed the experience.

One of our regular runners, Mehul Patel, raised £250 for the St. Lukes Hospice last week running in a 10K race at Sudbury so very well done for both running and fund raising.

To end on a serious matter, it was reported to us today that there had been a break-in at the pavilion last week, and some money was stolen. We were asked to encourage anyone who lives close to the park to report anything suspicious that they see or hear in the park at any time.

Have a good week and h

Harrow Parkrun number 195

After a very cold week with some very icy mornings, the weather was kinder for us today so we had great conditions for our parkrun. There was another good turnout of 231 runners, with visitors from Northampton and Perth (in Australia!).  There were three milestones this week, with Daniel Singham, Hemini Parmar and Worrell Cork all completing their 50th run.  Hemini narrowly missed out on a pb on her 50th, but 41 people did achieve a pb, which is a very high proportion of the total number of runners.

Our first finisher was Sam Adcock in a new pb of 17:07, and the first lady home was Rache Porter in 21:41.

Please spare a thought for our regular band of volunteers, and consider joining us if you haven't already done so.  There are spaces available for all the coming weeks.  To find out more, go to www.parkrun.org.uk/harrow/futureroster/ where you can see what positions are available and follow the links to register.

Hope to see you all next week,

Harrow parkrun number 188

A very cold morning this Saturday, but conditions were good as the path had dried out and we were able to move the finish back onto the grass as surprisingly the mud had also largely gone. Despite the cold there were 159 finishers, of whom 13 were first timers and 30 recorded new Personal Bests.

First home today was Sam Adcock in an excellent new PB of of 17:34, and he was closely followed by Janusz Rakza in 17:54.  First lady home was Victoria Upton in 21-00, with Rache Porter close behind in 21:07.

Notable among the PBs were Olivia Matharu (JW 11-14) in 22.50 and, just behind her, Annabelle Suffield (JW 10) in 23.01.  We also had Zaearia Atek (JW 11-14) just ahead of Olivia in 23:31, so it is great to see the youngsters doing so well.  Also praise for Beth Nelson who achieved another PB on her 207th run.

Well done also to the anniversary runners this week: Helen D'Amico, Sarah Wood and Dina Loon on 50, and Kevin Concannon on 100.

Not many tourists put their hands up this week, but welcome to Katie McRoberts from Yeovil.  I hope you enjoyed your visit to Harrow, and you said afterwards that you didn't find it too hilly, resulting in your parkrun PB.

Finally, a mention of Red January

Mind in Harrow is partnering with RED January - Run Every Day January -  a national initiative motivating people to get active every day in January to support their mental health and wellbeing.

Harrow parkrun number 156

Hi All,

What a beautiful day we had today, perfect running weather for some but perhaps a little too hot for others.  The sun certainly brought out the crowds, as we had 212 finishers, well above our usual 150-180, so let's hope the 26 first timers will make it a regular event.

Overall, the heat didn't seem to slow people down as there were an amazing 50 personal bests recorded, which equates to almost 25% of the runners doing a pb.

Only one anniversary this week, so congratulations to Hayley Lepps for completing her 50th parkrun, 49 of them at Harrow.

Only a few visitors made themselves known today, ranging from local Cassiobury to further afield Dublin and Cambridge, I hope you enjoyed your run at Harrow and will make a return visit.

See you next week,

Denis Foxley

Harrow parkrun number 149

Welcome to Harrow Parkrun number 149.  Amazingly we were back to freezing conditions with snow again, after last week's Spring-like respite.  Hopefully it won't last too long and we will be back to more normal conditions next week.  The cold didn't deter many of you, though, as we had a decent turnout of 147 participants.  The numbers were boosted by a large contingent from the Metros, who were there to celebrate the 70th birthday of Dave Brown.  Thanks for the lovely cakes, Dave, and congratulations on your birthday and for completing the run.

Considering the conditions, it was quite surprising to see 17 first timers to Harrow, seven of whom were doing their first ever parkrun.  We hope to see you all again.  Also shrugging off the inclement weather were the 17 people who managed a pb this morning, so well done to all of you.

The first finisher, as he usually is when he runs here, was Nigel Rackham, in the excellent time of 18.21, followed by Paul Keating and John Norris. The first lady home was Rache Porter in 21.33, with Joanne Payne and Louise Lepps almost together in 2nd and 3rd.

We also had four runners completing their 50th parkrun, so congratulations to Judy Rackham, Zita Bertalan, Michael Morris and Isavella Kontaxopoulou.

Hope to see you all next week,

Denis Foxley, Run Director
