#269 29/02/2020 Wye Valley Runners Reign on Leap Day!

Episode 269: The one where everyone gets wet
178 runners and 26 volunteers braved the elements at Hereford racecourse for the first ever Leap Day parkrun. Although the early morning rain stopped shortly before the start, conditions were far from ideal for both runners and volunteers.
We are very grateful to Wye Valley Runners for providing the volunteers this week – thanks for a doing a great job, especially those who suffered hypothermia and frostbite. Big thanks to the pacers – pacing accurately is never easy but was especially difficult this week. We hope that they proved to be useful in helping people to achieve their time goals. Thanks also to Hereford Triathlon Club for the loan of their brand new pacing bibs – you’ll be seeing them again on 11 th April when they will be
worn by their rightful owners!
22 first timers took part of whom 6 were doing their very first parkrun – welcome to the parkrun family – we hope you enjoyed your run and will keep coming back. We welcomed visitors from Bridgend and Liverpool and I’m sure there were quite a few more from other places. Great to see you all – we hope you enjoyed your morning at Hereford.
11 runners achieved a PB – a fantastic effort in such difficult conditions – but only Kevin Baker enters the Hereford Hall of Fame, having achieved a PB with at least 10 runs completed.
A special mention for Fred Tyler who turned 10 this week and just missed out on a milestone run, this being his 99th parkrun. Happy Birthday, Fred. You’ll be 38 the next time parkrun happens on the 29th of February – I hope we are still around to help you celebrate your 1500 th parkrun!
We are very grateful to the volunteers who made this event happen: Becki ANSFIELD, Phil BUTLER, Anthony CHAMPKEN, Lynne COMPTON, Chris DAW, Jan EDWARDS, Adam HAYWOOD, Marc KENDRICK, Ralph LLOYD, Brent LOWSON, Kate LYKE, Adam MICHNIOK, Paddy NUGENT, Simon OLIVER, Jesse PERRIE, Nigel POWELL, Les PRICE, Ann PRITCHARD, Liz PRITCHARD, Jackie REYNOLDS, Billy SMALLWOOD, Peter SMITH, Barbara SPANJERS, Brian SYMONDS, Eva TYLER, Nikki TYLER.

Should anyone feel the urge to help out by volunteering (it’s a great way of keeping involved with the parkrun community if you are injured or saving your legs for a race) please do let us know by posting on our FB page “Hereford parkrun”; emailing herefordhelpers@parkun.com or speaking to the Run Director or any volunteer at our event on a Saturday morning.

#266 08/02/2020 Chris & Nigel Hit Milestones, Nikki Has a Milestone of Her Own and We All Dodge Storm Ciara

Twenty-two volunteers helped 246 walkers and runners complete Hereford parkrun in the best weather the weekend had to offer.  Big congratulations to Chris on his 100th run and Nigel on his 50th.  The cake was delicious!  Thank you.  Nikki T kicked off her birthday weekend with a run round our course with you.  Happy Birthday Nikki!

Thank you to everyone who has been stepping up to help out as a volunteer.  It is really great when we know the roster is covered and we can deliver a safe event.  Keep the offers coming please.  You can see the state of future rosters here https://www.parkrun.org.uk/hereford/futureroster/   Note that Wye Valley Runners are covering the roster on 29 Feb and will fill in the few spaces that are still empty.  Girl Guides are helping out and participating on 14 March, but will need some help to cover the more technical volunteer roles.

Thank you to the volunteers who donned the hi-viz at this event.  They are: Alex POWIS  •  Amy GILLIGAN  •  Andrew PANTLAND  •  Andrew TYLER  •  Anna SIMPKIN  •  Anthony CHAMPKEN  •  Barbara SPANJERS  •  Benjamin LEWIS  •  Brent LOWSON  •  Colette WILKS  •  David WILKS  •  Eva TYLER  •  Fred TYLER  •  Hollie THOMAS  •  Jane COOPER  •  Jane MATTHEWS  •  Lavinia EDWARDS  •  Les PRICE  •  Mark EDWARDS  •  Mike SHAW  •  Paul GILBERT  •  William COOPER

#264 25/01/2020 Welcome Nordic Walkers & 46 pb’s

A cool and damp day with little wind - just about perfect for running once you got warmed up.  It won't be a surprise that 46 of you recorded a new personal best - that's awesome!   I'm sure that the pacers (all members of Hereford Couriers) helped some of you achieve that elusive goal this week.

A huge thank you to the 24 volunteers that helped make the event possible.  They are: Adam MICHNIOK  •  Alan ROWLANDS  •  Amy GILLIGAN  •  Anthony CHAMPKEN  •  Antony WILLIAMS  •  Barbara SPANJERS  •  Ben SKINNER  •  Bethan MURGATROYD  •  Brent LOWSON  •  Gillian OMAR  •  Hollie THOMAS  •  Isabella SEAL  •  Jake CULLUM-HOLLINS  •  Jill CUNNINGHAM  •  Jonathan EDWARDS  •  Justyna MICHNIOK  •  Kyle DOVEY  •  Les PRICE  •  Mike PRIVETT  •  Nikki TYLER  •  Phil BUTLER  •  Rachel LATTEY  •  Sharon WOOD  •  Tom MOORE

We need at minimum of 12 volunteers each week to put on Hereford parkrun.  If you can help us out, please do get in touch to let us know a Saturday that would suit you.  There is a variety of roles that need doing - something for everyone.  You can speak to someone official looking at our event on Saturday, post a comment of our facebook page 'Hereford parkrun' or send an email to us at herefordhelpers@parkrun.com   You can see the state of future rosters on our Hereford parkrun website ...https://www.parkrun.org.uk/hereford/futureroster/ to get an idea of what needs doing.  We really appreciate all the support we've been getting.  If you are saving your legs for a special race, are having a rest day, recovering from an injury or just fancy being part of the support team instead of running, we would love your help.  It's always nice to know in advance that we've got the help we need, but don't let that put you off coming last minute.

There was a whopping 276 of you running and walking this week.  January is slipping away and you are smashing your resolutions to get more active!  It is our hope that you also look forward to coming, seeing friendly faces, making new friends and indeed turning resolutions into happy habits.

I have a few highlights to share.... Henry speeding through the finish, a pb for 1st finisher Sam, Felix's return (his smile and skippy run make it all worthwhile!), the debut of Nordic walkers at our event and trying to outbark a very energetic dog during the run brief.

There may be a gremlin hovering around positions 230-240 in the results this week.  It is possible that runners should be bumped one position lower from a point in that range, but I can't be certain.  I don't think it will make a huge difference.   If you think it has set a pb for you that will make your next pb too challenging, get in touch and we can adjust your result.  Email herefordhelpers@parkrun.com

We welcomed tourists from Walthamstow who made a point of letting us know they had a good visit and enjoyed running at Hereford.  Come back soon!

#263 18/01/2020 Runners Loving the Sunshine for Frosty parkrun

Well done to all 247 finishers who braved the frosty conditions and were compensated by the rare appearance of sunshine to help cheer the spirits and spur 22 runners onto PB’s with six runners achieving Hall of Fame status having achieved a PB after completing at least 10 park runs.
Oliver Clarke, Aoibh Clarke, Speedy Gonzales, Guy Jenkins, Richard Andrew, Hannah Campbell.
We were delighted to welcome 33 first timers to Hereford parkrun, we hope you enjoyed the experience and look forward to seeing you return very soon.
Many Congratulations to Chloe Strzadaza JW10 who completed her 10th parkrun.

#261 04/01/2020 An Epic Start for 2020

The decade got off to a cracking start at Hereford parkrun with a new course record of 15:19 run by Rhys Park (he beat his previous record of 15:27) .  Truly amazing!  That's not all the good news.  We had 32 new parkrunners register this week and I hope you all enjoyed the first of many runs this morning.

We had visitors from various places around the UK.  We hope you had an enjoyable run with us and a pleasant visit in Herefordshire.  Come back soon!

Many thanks to the volunteers who made it possible.  They are:

Andrew PANTLAND  •  Anthony CHAMPKEN  •  Antony WILLIAMS  •  Avrl SEFTEL  •  Barbara SPANJERS  •  Brent LOWSON  •  Eva TYLER  •  Gillian OMAR  •  Hollie THOMAS  •  James HULSE  •  Jane MATTHEWS  •  John HULSE  •  Les PRICE  •  Paul GILBERT  •  Phil BUTLER  •  Philip HART  •  Tom MOORE

We need at least a dozen volunteers each week.  Please consider taking a turn to help out.  If we all do a little, no one needs to do a lot.  It is not difficult and we'll show you the ropes.  You can choose a role that you prefer.  Check out the future roster here https://www.parkrun.org.uk/hereford/futureroster/ where you can see all the empty spaces that need filling.  It is much less work and less stressful for the Run Director if they know by Wednesday that the roster is covered.  So if at all possible, it would be great to know in advance.  We send reminder emails out to volunteers Thursdays or Fridays, so you won't forget.  Thanks very much for all your help.

We had a few gremlins in the works this morning and you may notice your final finish position is different from number on the finish token you received.  Positions 100-116 will be one number less and positions 117- 257 will be 2 numbers less.  For example, if you had token 240, it will show as 238 in the results.

Congratulations and well done to everyone who finished the course this morning.  Have you set a parkrun attendance goal for 2020?  Have a great week and see you next time!

#260 28/12/2019 Bye Bye Twenty-teens

A huge thank you to the volunteers who helped today and throughout the year to make our event possible.  You are awesome and your efforts are appreciated.   Notable volunteering milestones today and recently... Rachel did her 100th at Hereford today and Andrew did his 100th last week.  We had Tom join us today for his volunteering requirement on his way to completing his Bronze DofE Award.  Today you were helped around by :  Amy GILLIGAN  •  Andrew PANTLAND  •  Antony WILLIAMS  •  Barbara SPANJERS  •  Bronwen TYLER-JONES  •  Lavinia EDWARDS  •  Les PRICE  •  Liz PRITCHARD  •  Mark EDWARDS  •  Michelle BOWLEY  •  Neil BROOKS-JOHNSON  •  Nikki TYLER  •  Phil BUTLER  •  Philip THOMAS  •  Rachel LATTEY  •  Sophie EDWARDS  •  Tom MOORE

As it is customary to reflect on the past at the end of the year, here's a recap.....  Hereford parkrun started on 11th October 2014. Since then 6,905 participants have completed 40,533 parkruns covering a total distance of 202,665 km, including 6,987 new Personal Bests. A total of 427 individuals have volunteered 3,864 times.  Pretty amazing!

There were 214 runner/walkers today and 17 volunteers. 47 were first timers and 15 recorded a new pb.  The course was less wet than last week, but still quite muddy.  We had tourists from New York, Spain, London, Abergavenny, and a few other places I can't recall (sorry).  Volunteer Andrew was celebrating his birthday today - Happy Birthday Andrew!

Wishing you all health, happiness, fulfillment and a pb (or several) in 2020.

#256 16/11/2019 Mud, Mud and More Mud

Exactly 200 runners were helped around the course by the efforts of 15 volunteers.  We had visitors from Australia and Knighton.  Michelle celebrated her birthday marshalling at the 9 o'clock position - thank you Michelle and we hope you have a brilliant day!

The course was very muddy after weeks of wet weather.  The ground is saturated and any rain has trouble draining away.  It sure didn't slow you down much!  I'm looking forward to seeing photos later.  It would have been a great day for a certain parkrun sponsor   to pay us a visit with free samples.  Nudge, nudge, hint, hint!

A very big thank you to today's volunteers - Antony WILLIAMS  •  Barbara SPANJERS  •  Gillian OMAR  •  Hayley LOVATT  •  Helen GODSALL  •  Jane MATTHEWS  •  Mark JOHNSON  •  Martin FOGG  •  Michelle BOWLEY  •  Mike SHAW  •  Nikki TYLER  •  Phil BUTLER  •  Sharon WOOD  •  Stephen TURNER  •  Temi ODURINDE

And thank you to those who came forward to volunteer at future events.  It is much appreciated.  It isn't very nice for the Run Director to face a Saturday without a full complement of helpers and it is best when we know several days ahead of time to save us from frantic emails, posts and pleas for help.  You can see the future roster on our website, Hereford parkrun - https://www.parkrun.org.uk/hereford/futureroster/   Please do check it out and volunteer to help out on a date and for a role that suits you.  Get in touch via              - email at herefordhelpers@parkrun.com

- by commenting on our Facebook page - Hereford parkrun

- speaking to the Run Director any Saturday at our event.

The roster is in great shape for 23 November.  We can use a few more volunteers on 30 November and 7 December has plenty of vacancies.

Dates to note:

7 Dec. collection for Hereford Food Bank   https://herefordfoodbank.co.uk/   We'll have more details for you in the coming weeks.  Your response has been terrific in the past and is very appreciated.

14 Dec. Hereford parkrun cancelled for Horse Racing - Christmas Jumper Race Day

Hereford Hall of Fame (at least 10 runs and a pb)

Joseph Shirley

Keith Loudon

Isaac Culshaw

Jennifer Whitstance

Hope to see you all again next Saturday, with a special invitation extended to Mr. Sunshine!
