Heslington parkrun #104 – International Women’s Day

Heslington parkrun no. 104: International Women's Day with #ThisGirlCan

International Women's Day is not only about celebrating the achievements of women, but also looking at what we can do personally to help improve gender balance at work, in sport, everywhere. Why not invite your female friends and colleagues to join in the next parkrun?

The current holder of the 268 Mile Montane Spine Race record is 35-year-old Jasmin Paris, and at the other end of the distance spectrum this year in February Charlotte Arter broke the female parkrun record (which she held) at Cardiff, setting the new record of 15:49.

This week 205 women ran, jogged, and walked Heslington parkrun. At least 12 of the pacers were women this week covering 20-35minutes. Our run director Clare Stones was volunteering for the 25th time and Emily Baines was the first female home with a time of 18:22.

As well as all the great things women were doing today, we were also joined by 265 men in the chilly March sunshine, including James Chiverton who achieved his 50th Parkrun, and a special guest appearance from Andrew Lane, a tourist from Norwich who was one of the first parkrunners at the original parkrun in Bushy Park. Jack Eggington was our first male home with a PB of 16.24.

Thanks are due to all of the volunteers of all genders, without whom parkrun couldn't happen, and extra thanks for the cake which helped fuel my cycle ride home!

Would like to give a special mention to Amanda Cooper who was our first ever Sign Language support volunteer at Heslington, she did an amazing job of showing how our parkrun encourages everyone to take part. Thank you Amanda.

This week 470 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 68 were first timers and 100 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 34 different clubs took part.
The event was made possible by 49 volunteers:

Emma SIMMONS • Geoff MARCHMENT • Hollis LANSFORD • Georgina WESTON • Eleanor EASTWOOD • Rob HUNT • Amanda COOPER • Chris COOPER • Celia MAUGHAN • Paul EASTWOOD • James CARTER • Hayley JACKSON • Clare CHAPPELL • Graham ROBERTSON • Rob WHITE • Ian HARGREAVES • William HARGREAVES • Nick BOYD • Kate BOYD • Sally POLKEY • Nick SHIPLEY • Shona GILLEGHAN • Abigail EASTWOOD • Jordan HOWE • Emily BAINES • Louise BARCLAY JOHNSON • Helen GRAINGER • Jackie MITCHELL • Leigh SHIPLEY • Jonny WISE • Amy IREDALE-MITCHELL • Clare STONES • Hayley DUMONT • Spike CHAPPELL • Helena SENIOR • Angela EKERS • Kevin THOMAS • Emma GILMORE • Debbie FALGATE • Julie LINLEY • Lesley KNEVITT • Sarah GALLAGHER • Jon DAKEYNE • Valda BARNETT • Daniel BUTCHER • Joseph DAVIES • Tasmin SARAI • Amy CARTON • Lucas SHIPLEY

Run Report #103 – The Mad One

It’s a leap year - and today was the ‘extra’ day! Saturday 29th February - and another wet and windy weekend in York begins. But does anything deter our redoubtable parkrunners? It does not! And as a throng of people along with assorted dogs gathered at the Heslington start line for the 103rd Heslington parkrun, our reward was a blue sky and sunshine.

Today there was an exceptional turn out, with visitors from Leicester, Lewes and Lancaster (to name a few) running alongside fugitives from New Earswick (currently doubling as a mud spa) and York Knavesmire where the high tide had come in, catering for a range of water birds and aquatic species. No fins and flippers, no run. Although our participant from the Great Britain Underwater Hockey Team might have enjoyed the experience.

With cheers for our trusty volunteers, a lengthier than usual description of the route and rounds of applause for milestone achievers, we were off; an augmented crowd of 518 eager people to run, walk, and jog the five circuits of the track that made today’s ‘Plan B’ parkrun.

Parkrunners are always a friendly, chatty bunch but today was made exceptional by sheer numbers, many meeting long lost friends from far climes (Arbroath, Newark, Boston Spa and Acomb) and due to the compact nature of the course. And the rain held off until (almost) the end!

A huge vote of thanks is due to all of the volunteers who worked this week to set up the course, marshal, cheer us on, scan bar codes and all the other jobs that ensure that we are able to run. Without your help, runs would not take place. We really do appreciate what you do for us!

This week our volunteers included the following amazing people:
Abbey DRIFFIELD, Adrian GUNN, Amy IREDALE-MITCHELL, Andrew MCMORRIS, Ashley SMITH, Catherine MEZZETTI, Celia MAUGHAN, Daniel BUTCHER, Don GUNN, Ed MEZZETTI, Eleanor EASTWOOD, Frank MC LOUGHLIN, Gabriel UTTLEY, Geoff MARCHMENT, Helen GRAINGER, Hollis LANSFORD, Jack SLOCOMBE, Jamie INCH, Jeffrey WOOLHOUSE, Jonny WISE, Jordan HOWE, Joseph DAVIES, Kate MILLS, Kevin THOMAS, Liz PIPER, Louise STRINGER, Matthew PAGE, Paul EASTWOOD, Pepe THE ROMANIAN RESCUE DOG, Peter ATKINSON, Phil RADDALL, Rob HUNT, Ruth ROBSON, Sharon LYNN, Ste ROBSON, Valda BARNETT and William HARGREAVES

And a special mention to our tail walker this week: Pepe (with his owner Gabriel), all the way from Romania who was enthusiastic all of the way round his first ever parkrun. I wonder if there is a special T shirt for Romanian Rescue Dogs?

If you would like to join our band of happy volunteers - there are plenty of opportunities to help out and we are always pleased to see new recruits. Just take a look at our park run web page and send us an email at heslington@parkrun.com if you would like to take part as a volunteer. See you next Saturday!

Celebrations:
• Cheers today were in order for Garry Doubtfire celebrating his 250th run and for Hayley Dumont celebrating her 50th.
• Cheers also to the 54 runners who gained a new PB. Congratulations and well done!
• A round of applause too to the 13 people celebrating their very first parkrun, you know who you are and should be proud of your achievement. Hope to see you all again next week!

Random stats: today was the 29th and, in 29th place was Jordan Howe with a time of 19mins 56. And in 2nd place on the 2nd month of the year came Jasper Baker from Lewes in 17mins 20 whilst Katie Wise was second woman in. Well done.

For full results, see the results page at: https://www.parkrun.org.uk/heslington/results/latestresults/.

A word of encouragement - please don’t think you have to be another Roger Bannister or Kelly Holmes to join us. Whatever your speed or ability, you are welcome to join us. You will never be the last person in - we have a tail walker who takes that position - and there is usually the cafe at the end for a warming drink.

Whether you walk, run or jog, you deserve a round of applause for taking part and finishing this 5k course. Because for mast of us parkrun is not so much about racing and winning but a warm and welcoming social event with a run or walk thrown in for good measure. So come along and try us out! We look forward to seeing you again next Saturday.

International Women’s Day special – Saturday 7th March 2020

Heslington parkrun is delighted to be one of the many parkruns around the world celebrating International Women’s Day on Saturday 7th March 2020. In England, #IWDparkrun is supported by This Girl Can, a campaign created by Sport England.
These days there are many barriers that hold people back from participating in social events like parkrun.
For some reason women are less likely than men to take part and to continue participating in parkrun, this is despite women making up 54% of overall registrations.
parkrun are taking the opportunity that International Women’s Day (#IWD) presents to encourage more women and girls to participate.

We would love you to join in the celebrations by bringing along a female friend, colleague or family member and walking, jogging, running or volunteering. You could even just come along to watch or cheer.

Don't panic guys, everyone is welcome at parkrun on International Women’s Day. Please come along and support Women's day whether it is running, walking or volunteering.

Heslington would love to support this event with a suggested purple dress code and would love to encourage a female team of pacers just for the day.

Heslington Run Report Event #102

If 23mph winds are your thing then Saturday was a real treat as 330 runners, joggers and walkers were propelled, blasted and wafted all over Lakeside Way.
The rain did stay away though - perhaps to the disappointment of Heslington first-timer Albie Gray, representing Great Britain Underwater Hockey (I'm intrigued!).

The squally conditions did not stop James White as he breezed home in 16:59, 54 seconds ahead of the second finisher, while Georgina Weston was first lady.

Georgina was 'taking it easy' by pacing 20 minutes, and she used that reserve of energy to go out and win the Snake Lane 10 mile race in Pocklington in one hour and two minutes on Sunday.

Very well done Georgina, and congratulations to everyone who wound their way around Snake Lane from everyone at Hes.

Back to parkrun and the mind boggles at the combined figure of 1,016 parkruns that Chris Jones and Liz Jones of Hyde Park Harriers have completed after finishing on Saturday.

There were also milestones for Kevin Thomas, reaching his 50th parkrun, while Tom Kingscott clocked his 200th.

Finally, as I write this, the forecast for next weekend is snow joke so don't forget your ice skates, or your barcode.

Heslington parkrun #101

Saturday February 15th - lovely weather for ducks.

“Why does it always rain on me? Is it because I parkran when I was seventeen?” - Travis

Saturday morning, and guess what? Another storm brewing. Must be time for parkrun! But instead of blaming it on the weatherman, or even singing in the rain, the committed were out at Heslington, running in the rain.

Forget the dark clouds looming on the horizon, ignore the storm-shaped weather forecast, what could be better than joining 418 other people to run, canter, trot or jog around Heslington’s 101st parkrun? What could be better? Well, I am sure that you may be able to think of a few things. But to the dedicated parkrunner and eager first timers alike, the thought of running around Heslington’s paved course amongst a friendly and chatty throng with the promise of cake at the end (thanks to Kim and friends) was enough to get us out in lycra, a brisk breeze and the fresh air. Some even came in shorts!!!! I suppose they do dry quicker than leggings...

Heslington is a paved course (or brick-lined river, depending on the weather), running around the athletics track then out along beside the lake, before returning for another loop- and-a-bit of the track/river. It is suitable for all weathers, unlike many grass-based parkruns. But this morning it had the added interest of ‘A wet bit’ and a ‘Muddy bit’ (to quote our amazing run director), and an attendant gaggle of geese watching in bewilderment as we ran past in the steadily gathering breeze.

Proving that there is someone up there who loves parkrunners (apart from the run director!) the rain held off until the very last lap of the track! Although I am sure that the fast bods were already home, showered, breakfasted and going about their daily tasks before some of us got to that bit. Just think, the rest of us had a free shower that was totally carbon-neutral! Many thanks to the amazing marshals who stood in the rain until the last runners were in and kept on smiling and cheering. We really appreciate you standing there in the rain and wind to encourage us. #RoundOfApplause.

Random stats:
• Congratulations to Don Formhals doing his 250th parkrun today, to Ian Fairlamb and Kim Middleton doing their 100th and to Elizabeth Foley, Luke Richardson, Susan Lang and Nicola Stojkovic who were running their 50th parkruns. Well done!
• Today there were 50 first timers - nice to see you all! And a special mention for the 10 runners who were doing their first ever parkruns. Congratulations for completing the course. We hope to see you again next week.
• February is the second month of the year – so we’re hailing the number 2’s… James White was 2nd male runner in and Catrin Donnelly was 2nd female.
• Today was also the 15th of the month – so, keeping with the numerical pattern, well done to Richard Carrick who came in 15th place.
• And – because this is an outstanding achievement – well done to the 55 people who achieved a new personal best… a round of applause and well done to you all!

Abbey DRIFFIELD, Adam THOMAS, Adrian GUNN, Amy CARTON, Amy IREDALE-MITCHELL, Angela GRAHAM, Celia MAUGHAN, Claire INCH, Clare STONES, Don GUNN, Harry WYKES, Helen GRAINGER, Hem RANA, Ian FAIRLAMB, Jack SLOCOMBE, James WILLIAMSON, Jamie INCH, Jane CUNNINGHAM, Jane MORBY, Jeffrey WOOLHOUSE, Joni SOUTHALL, Jonny WISE, Jordan HOWE, Kate BOYD, Kevin HIND, Kevin THOMAS, Leigh SHIPLEY, Lucas SHIPLEY, Luke HARBORD, Nick BOYD, Nick SHIPLEY, Nicola CLEMENTS, Nicola STOJKOVIC, Olivia BOWLING, Richard WALKER, Richard WYKES, Rob HUNT, Sara HARBORD, Sebastian LAWRENCE, Tasmin SARAI, Tristan FEATHERBY, Valda BARNETT, Viki Bee CLARKE and William HARGREAVES

Thanks to all of you who turned up, set up the run, scanned barcodes, cheered us on and the myriad of other jobs that you do - parkrun could not take place without your help. You are amazing people and deserve a huge vote of thanks for all you do!

If you would like to join our band of happy volunteers - there are plenty of opportunities to help out and we are always pleased to see new recruits. Just take a look at our parkrun web page and send us an email at heslingtonhelpers@parkrun.com if you would like to take part as a volunteer.

A word of encouragement - please don’t think you have to be another Mo Farrah or Kelly Holmes to join us. Or even as good at running as that colleague who’s always popping off down the gym! Whatever your speed or ability, you are welcome to join us. You will never be the last person in - we have a tail walker who takes that position.

Whether you walk, run or jog, you deserve a round of applause for taking part and finishing this 5k course. Because for most of us parkrun is not so much about racing and winning, but a warm and welcoming social event with a run or walk thrown in for good measure. So come along and try us out! We look forward to seeing you again next Saturday at York Sport Village, Lakeside Way, Heslington, York YO10 5FG.

Heslington parkrun the big 100

Saturday 8th February 2020 dawned, the sun was shinning, the wind was but a gentle breeze - the calm before the storm - & 478 runners, joggers and walkers assembled at the start line. It was an extra special day at Heslington as it was the 100th Parkrun. There was lots of excitement as everyone waited for Paul, the Run Director, to set us on our way. As usual there were pushchairs and prams and some very excited dogs, all eager to get going.
Of the 478, 45 were first timers, 117 recorded new Personal Bests and 36 different clubs were represented.

Today we also had a number of records set and dynamic duo Amy and Jen Bennison both ran their 100th parkrun. They are regulars at Heslington and it was great to see them both achieve this momentous event today; what is even more amazing is that Amy is just 8 years old & has already clocked up over 300 miles at parkruns - well done Amy

Also hitting milestones today were Jonathan Fox who ran his 100th, Chris Morris who ran his 50th and Melissa Adams and George Burt both ran their 10th parkruns; brilliant work all round.

First male home today was Heslington regular & fans favourite Jordan Howe who also set a new course record of 15mins and 30seconds. So many of us were thrilled that the course record now sits with a regular & local runner. Jordan was also the 7th fastest male in the UK on the 8th February.
First Female home today was Georgina Weston another regular at Heslington.
Of course none of us would have been able to get out there and strut our stuff today, whether that is running, jogging or walking, without the fabulous hi-viz heroes who give us their time for us. Todays 47 volunteers were:

Andrew MCMORRIS • Stephen WILSON • Ste ROBSON • Emma SIMMONS • Ruth ROBSON • John FOTHERGILL • Kevin HIND • Joseph ROBSON • Jane MORBY • Eleanor EASTWOOD • Rob HUNT • Chris COOPER • Matthew WILCOCK • James OLLERENSHAW • Paul EASTWOOD • Abbie EASTWOOD • Dan EASTWOOD • Josh MCMORRIS • Adrian GUNN • Graham ROBERTSON • William HARGREAVES • Stephen CLARKE • Kate BOYD • David SPILLETT • Nick SHIPLEY • Paul LISTER • Don GUNN • Jordan HOWE • Jake STEPHENS • Leigh SHIPLEY • Jonny WISE • Gareth BOWKER • Lucy HART • Claire WILSON • Dean STARKEY • Jack SLOCOMBE • Ashley SMITH • Jamie INCH • Olivia BOWLING • Emma GILMORE • Valda BARNETT • Daniel BUTCHER • Joseph DAVIES • Ceri WYBORN • Tasmin SARAI • Amy CARTON
And let’s not forget Woody who had a central role at the turn about point, barking us on
Also a huge thanks to Ruth Robson for the flapjack, it was absolutely delicious and also to Ste Robson for undertaking rigorous quality control checks.

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Heslington parkrun Results Page.

The female record is held by Emma WAUDBY who recorded a time of 16:51 on 17th November 2018 (event number 40).

Run report #99

On a day only a sailor would look forward to 475 intrepid souls abandoned the warmth and comfort of the house to battle through 20mph winds (gusting up to 40mph at times) to take part in perhaps the best thing you can do on a Saturday morning with your clothes on.

However, these hardy folks are not the heroes of the day, that accolade goes to the even more intrepid 38 Volunteers who not only took on mother nature but for many were rooted to their posts for over an hour in the grips of the wind. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, he’s and she’s, them or they I give you our volunteers (pauses for rapturous but spontaneous applause).

Jeffrey WOOLHOUSE • Andrew MCMORRIS • Stephen WILSON • Luke HARBORD • Sharon LYNN • Tim GIBSON • Georgina WESTON • Andrew GREEN • Kevin HIND • Nicola CLEMENTS • Matt RYLATT • Celia MAUGHAN • William HARGREAVES • Nick BOYD • Kate BOYD • Nick SHIPLEY • Jordan HOWE • Teresa HUNTLEY • Jonny WISE • Amy IREDALE-MITCHELL • Clare STONES • Gareth BOWKER • Claire WILSON • Jen BENNISON • Amy BENNISON • Jim MCCAMBRIDGE • Dean STARKEY • Abbey DRIFFIELD • Jack SLOCOMBE • Sarah WHITEHOUSE • Jamie INCH • Olivia BOWLING • Emma GILMORE • Julie LINLEY • Lesley KNEVITT • Valda BARNETT • Daniel BUTCHER • Joseph DAVIES

Without volunteers every week parkrun would not happen, if you have not yet offered your services, I can heartily recommend it, not only do you get to get out of the house but you can help make someone’s day and wear a natty hi-viz jacket. Contact your local friendly run director to sign up, there are loads of roles, from pacer to tail walker, from photographer to report writer, on course marshal to bar code scanner, event set up to event close down or bar code sorting (you can do this one with a brew too). You will be made to feel welcome, taught what to do and you will be contributing to the fun and enjoyment for all those who run, jog or walk.

Across the whole of York today there were 84 phenomenal volunteers allowing 1140 people to run, walk or jog their way around the 3 parkrun events. Over 1200 people in our little town out on a Saturday morning in wind you wouldn’t turn your dog out in. Well done everyone.

Today at YO10 we said hello for the first time to 55 newbies, welcome to parkrun and before long you will wonder why you hadn’t done it years ago. Despite the wind 62 people set new personal best times, which, when you consider the out run along the bumpy brick road was headlong into the gale, is a great effort. Jordan Howe was the first male home (no real surprise there), Georgina Weston the first female home and William Chalk had the honour of being the first junior home in a smidge over 20 minutes.

Whether you came 1st or 475th the joy of parkrun is the taking part.

Bravo to you all and see you all again next week for the big one when Heslington hits 100. Bring a friend, bring two, bring cake spread the love and let everyone know how good Heslington parkrun is.

Heslington parkrun report #98 by Clare Stones

Friday night and the nerves were kicking in......

Tomorrow was parkrun !!! But no ordinary parkrun for me.

Saturday 25th January 2020 and the 98th Heslington parkrun.

Everything was ready and charged, weather checked, roster checked, volunteer instructions sent out, facebook message sent and the important vest ready to wear… tomorrow was my FIRST ever day as “Run Director” all by myself … gulp!

Double alarms set.. I didn’t want to lie in and let anyone down.

By 8.30am all was calm and set up with the help of Jordan Howe, and we were on the cycle track ready for the masses, course checked by the lovely Kate Boyd, Rob Hunt ready on car park duty and volunteers starting to arrive.

Do you know what … I didn’t need to be so nervous as the Heslington parkrun family were there to help and everyone down at Heslington is so supportive.

It was a bit on the cold side for volunteers but perfect running conditions and the adrenaline of the event kept me warm.

Then onto reading my run director report and setting off the runners, joggers and walkers… wow what a feeling, watching everyone on their merry way! Absolutely loved it.

Loved every minute of the being run director and looking forward to my next time, next week I will enjoy being one of the runners for a change.

This week 474 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 52 were first timers and 102 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 40 different clubs took part.

First male home was James McCall bagging himself a PB, first female home was course regular Georgina Weston and first junior home was Jack Slocombe.

A very happy 16th birthday to Ben Gilroy who celebrated by getting himself a PB.

Congratulations to David Galsworthy for his 100th parkrun and also to Glenn Atkinson and Amy Iredale-Mitchell on their 50th parkrun.

The event was made possible by 40 fabulous volunteers who helped make it possible for parkrun to go ahead, a huge thank you to you all for giving up your time and supporting me through the event. Each and every one of you play such an important role in giving the best parkrun experience and you are all awesome.

The one with all the cake for our 2nd birthday (by Dawn Broom)

Today Heslington celebrated its second birthday with 486 eager runners who ran, jogged or walked the course in rather blustery conditions. Although no blustery weather stands in the way of parkrunners! It was supported by 39 volunteers whobraved the windy weather, with their normal friendly demeanor. First to cross the finish in a of time of 16:44 was Jake Stephens of Vegan Runners. First female to finish was Emily Baines in a time of 18:38 from York Knavesmire Harriers. Top age grading todaywent to Tim Franklin V60-64 whose 20:16 earned him 81.99%.

As a tourist this was my second time at Heslington. It has plentiful parking and very good facilities. Today the course was a little different to the first time I did it, but still with some of the out and back section that makes it quite specialas you can cheer others along as you pass on opposite sides. A fast course for those looking for a PB or season's best time. Very friendly and as tourist some lovely areas to explore within close proximity to York.

This week 486 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 58 were first timers and 77 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 41 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 39 volunteers:
