Congratulations to Graham WANG on reaching the 50 run milestone this week, 45 of which have been here at Homewood, and thanks for the celebratory chocolates.

20191012_093127

First across the line this week was Chris AXE on a speedy 19:09, only 8 seconds from his PB, and the first female this week was Emma MORETON of Shepperton Running Group who did so with a new Homewood PB of 24:04. Well done to everyone who made it round this week and avoided the chestnuts still littering the paths in the wood.

20191012_093238

Next week's run will be our 3rd birthday, so do come along and help us celebrate, please feel free to bring some cake!

20191012_084625

Homewood will be running on Christmas Day again this year, so if you fancy joining us please come along for a festive run, or, if you can help with some volunteering on the day, then please let us know, the more the merrier. We won't be running on New Years day here, but some nearby runs will be, so if you fancy a double look out for more details nearer the date.

Event #157 Saturday 5th October 2019

Here's a question for you. This Saturday, what did 149,395 people celebrate in 641 different locations? Dead easy right? They ran 5K on the 15th birthday of parkrun. It's a phenomenal number and one that just continues to grow. And let's not forget the 14,725 volunteers that made it all happen.

I was surprised to see that since I did my first one back in 2014 the weekly figure has risen from “just” 47,500 runners and 257 locations. I wonder what the numbers will be in five years time? Pretty soon there won't be any people left who aren't doing one!

All of which makes it a bit odd that we had one of our smaller fields this week; just 94 heroes walked, hopped, jogged or ran the course. (OK, I have no evidence that anyone was actually hopping, but it's not against the rules and I wasn't able to do extensive checks).

Where were the rest of you? I know there was a contingent who sloped off to the home of parkrun, Bushy Park. Shame on you! (although they did get to meet the founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt apparently)

WhatsApp Image 2019-10-05 at 08.37.20

Meanwhile, back at base we had our own treat with the talented Lucy serenading runners at Marshal Point Two. (Any suggestions for a parkrun themed playlist for the next time? “Keep On Running”, obviously. “Come On Eileen”, maybe. “Walking Back To Happiness” and so on....)

image1

As ever this weeks' run would not have taken place without our wonderful team of volunteers, led by Run Director Ali James. They were: Leo Basi, Alastair Benbow, Cynthia Boardman, Steve Dye, Dee Harper, Ian Harper, Kate Hicken, Jennifer Holmes, Keith Hopkins, Jill Hopkins, Lucy Hopkins, Kathy Miller, James Owen, Samantha Pennell, Phil Stocker, Libby Turner, Jes Turner and Sam Wang.

WhatsApp Image 2019-03-23 at 11.57.24

Despite the recent rain, the condition of the course seems to holding up well with no significant muddy patches appearing yet although great care was needed to negotiate the slippery roots which are such a feature of the route.

We were pleased to welcome many tourists this week as well as a number of runners joining Homewood for the first time. Hello to Tom Glancy, Jonathan Major, Dave Aitken, Adam Leary, Tony J Mansfield, Paul Bean, Lucy Low, Kathryn Harrison, Jane Fulbrook, Chloe Brewer, Peter Humphries, Andrene Williamson, Ramla Ali, Krystina Lockett and Hayden Bloomfield. Of these, Kathryn, Chloe, Peter, Ramala, Krystina and Hayden were taking part in their first ever parkrun. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to seeing you again.

As for the results, congratulations go to one of those first timers Tom Glancy, first home in a time of 18 minutes and 19 seconds. He was closely followed by Richard Gayton (19m, 04s) and William Hartley (19m 14s). For the ladies Paula Holmes was first back in 23m 55s followed by Zoe Wood in 25m 11s and Anna Smith in 25m 18s.

But parkrun isn't just about who is the quickest back. 14 runners achieved new PB's this week, so huge congratulations are also due to William Hartley, Colin Dow, Robert Sochon, Matt Bird, Alan Richardson, Adrian Doe, Jo Graham, Benjamin Turner, Andy Woods, Denise Gauntlett, Diana Basi, Clare Tiller, Cheryl Smith-Wright and Mariann Henshall

We had a couple of milestone runners with us: Dave Aitkin reached the unofficial but nonetheless very impressive figure of 200 runs whilst Homewood regular Andy Gifford notched up his 50th run.

When looking at the percentage scores 60 of the 94 finishers above 50% which shows what a lot of high achievers we have at Homewood!

And if you haven't fallen into any of the categories I've mentioned above, the great thing about parkrun is that it doesn't matter in the slightest. Maybe you had your own target to beat and maybe you made it or maybe you didn't. Whatever! The important thing is that you got out there and made it round and in doing so were part of what must have been one of the biggest birthday parties ever!

I hope to see you all again soon! We welcome you all (even those who defected to Bushy Park for the day!).

Phil

20190831_094659(0)

This week was the last day of summer as 190 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 55 were first timers and 27 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 27 different clubs took part including Comet Triathlon Club and Horsham Joggers. Today we set a new course record attendance beating the previous one of 189 by 1, a total that was set way back on our 4th Homewood parkrun on 5th November 2016, our numbers being swelled in part by Brooklands being off for the day and lovely group of Vegan Runners making Homewood their home for the day.

Congratulations and many thanks to Lisa MCLAREN on reaching the 100 volunteering milestone today, alongside myself!, we were both presented with the highest award Homewood can offer, the prestigious miniature wheelie bin by Kathy. Why a small bin? Well it pays homage to the big one we keep all the parkrun equipment in and wheel out for setup and close down each week. If you would like to join the volunteer list then please let anyone in high viz know, and we will welcome you to the team, we have many rolls that need doing from setup, marshalling, briefings, tail walking, timekeeping, token scanning and sorting and close down to name a few.

20190831_093720

First across the line this week was an unknown runner (#DFYB!), so the first person with a barcode was Richard GAYTON of Fulham RC on 19:48, first female was Vanessa BLACKBURN on her first time to Homewood on 21:28. Congratulations to everyone who walked, ran or jogged round the course today, there were a lot of people who had forgotten their barcodes, so please do try and remember yours if you want your name recorded, if you have lost it, or you need a spare then you can print out more from your profile page. Please note we can't scan from a phone, they have to be printed or on a wrist band, key fob etc.

Event #151 Saturday 24th August 2019

Event number 151 saw me visit Homewood as a tourist for the first time, having recently returned home to Glasgow. Taking in other parkruns near Homewood and also those around Glasgow has shown me how unique Homewood really is. 15 first-timers discovered the special Homewood course this week, part of the 100 cohort of runners this Saturday.

Runners

A couple points of contrast with other parkruns we have completed recently:

1. Hills and Roots. Flat might be good for your PB efforts, however, it can become monotonous. No such issues at Homewood. With the mixed terrain, undulating landscapes and the delight of the Achilles Hill summit (particularly on your third lap!) there is no danger of boredom. Oh yes, Achilles Hill, a challenge ‘enjoyed’ by some of our visitors from Cambridgeshire this week (the flattest county) for sure. Don’t get too distracted though by the surroundings, because you can bet the tree roots will be happy to bring you down to earth with a bump!

Kneee

2. Early Bird Catches the Worm. Shock to the system to make the 9am start, having acclimatised to the much more relaxed/civilised 9:30am kick-off for parkrun north of the border. Good for those needing the extra time in bed, but Homewood parkrunners are too hardcore for that slouching!

Setting

One thing is consistent whichever parkrun you attend and that is the positive encouragement offered to slow-coaches like myself from our course marshals and those gallopers who lap you at impressive speed. Homewood can be proud of its crowd. A very welcoming bunch, so why not join the team as a volunteer one week and become part of the core team?!

Volunteer

Shout out to the 20 volunteers this week who made the event possible:
Sarah ABBOTT • Samantha PENNELL • Kate HICKEN • Jacob THOMAS • Vicky BURR • Ainslie BOUSFIELD • Robert SOCHON • Phil GARTY • Phil STOCKER • Ralph STADIE • Steve DYE • Jill HOPKINS • Laura MILES • Maia HOPKINS • Lucy HOPKINS • Dee HARPER • Keith HOPKINS • David MACPHEE • Calvin MANNING • Cynthia BOARDMAN
