Well nearly anyway…..! After asking you all to watch your footing at the run briefing at our 181st (3rd at Southwater) parkrun and starting you all on your merry way, your Run Director almost took a tumble as he jogged alongside you all!
Anyway disaster was averted and with a few witty comments and a lot of laughter we off on another parkrun adventure!
It was a rather dodgy start in the dim half-light of Southwater Country Park as the key I had been given didn’t seem to fit the lock of our storage area, seemed it was just the cold weather to blame and we were soon off to set the course up. The main concern was how icy the paths were and it seemed OK till we got to our lovely hill…….. a huge sheet of ice greeted us and my heart sank, would we have to cancel last minute? A quick bit of thinking and we decided to reroute along the lower path and take the start up to the very end of our Downs Link section. Worries of whether the course would still be of a true (ish) length were also averted as it measured a reasonable 3.08 miles (compared to a true 3.12) so which did you prefer, with or without the hill? No promises on a permanent change though!
322 of you assembled and we had a few milestones to celebrate! Paul Chantler turned up fashionably late for his 50 and then forgot his barcode, so I guess we will see you next week then Paul?! Then we had our 2 “baby on board” ladies…. Well done to Hannah Miller on her 100th run and my lovely Step Daughter Danielle Moore doing her 50th! I make no apology for giving her a special build up in the briefing as her journey from reluctant runner to fully fledged parkrunner/runner has been very special to me.
Today saw Adrian Faulty overhauling an early break from Richard Lee Wright to first finish in 17.56 followed by Matt Pateman (who has an exceptionally low Athlete number of A1414!) in 18.09 and afore mentioned Richard in 18.40. For the ladies Jessica Lee Wright made it a good day for the Lee Wright’s being first home in 21.17 followed by Emily Chadwick (22.05) and Niamh Donnelly (22.20) well done to you all. We had 15 first timers, welcome to the parkrun family and 24 personal bests, congratulations! Our 2 baby bumpers Danielle and Hannah ran together and finished in 36.53 and 36.54 respectively. If you can’t keep on running for much longer it would be great to see you volunteering and on that note…… We are having a bit of a grind some weeks filling our roster currently, I know the weather is a bit yukky at the mo and getting your run done and dusted so you are back in the warm asap sounds a good call, but we would really love to see some different faces out there making our run happen each week. If you want to help email firstname.lastname@example.org thanks! So with everyone back safely we retired to the café with some of Danielle and Hannah’s fabulous cakes…… hopefully no one did actually faceplant this week and we will see you all again next week at Horsham/Southwater parkrun.
